and that they're very appreciative of. a young girl from maryland who was allegedly reprimanded for kneeling in the class during the national anthem has won the support of hillary clinton the former presidential candidate tweeted that it takes courage to express disagreement with injustice eleven year old ameri ana taylor hopes more people will join her it's important to stand up. to us where they can disagree but if you look at it people are just making really. mariano's that she was inspired by an american football quarterback who knelt during the national anthem before a game in twenty sixteen to protest against racial inequality and police brutality is fine and protests spread among other athletes with this provoked a fiery political debate raging all the way to the white house but you love to see one of these in a form. when somebody disrespects your for work to say get that sort of

a up of the old right out style that was not against our anthem or our flag that was actually leila as a reference position or responding to the girl's move the american civil rights union has urged all maryland schools to guarantee students freedom of speech without punishment meanwhile the girl's school has issued a statement saying it's not aware of any students being disciplined for such behavior but mariano says her teacher shouted at her and she reportedly left the classroom in tears on my colleague andrew farmer discussed the issue with john loudon a former missouri republican and richard good dean a former adviser to hillary clinton presidential campaign. football is about football schools about school and if you have a protest protest in a constructive way this girl can write letters to the editor she can arrange

a little march but protesting in your classroom to irritate your classmate mates and virtue signal and that's what she's being taught mom's teaching her mom is so proud that her daughter is virtue signaling that she cares more than anybody else and i actually find that to make no sense when you get arrested disproportionately when you get shot disproportionately when you get put in jail just proportionally that's not just annoying that's totally ruining your life so the fact you're taking to the streets is not merely disruptive you're trying to make a point in less you have a goal and something that you actually have a path to accomplish then you're just disrupting you're just being an antagonist to your fellow athletes or the fans or in this case to her classmates what does she want what's going to make her stand peace on earth and you know will we ever get to the point where there's no discrimination no there are bigoted people let's stipulate that there are people who are bigoted they will be bigoted forever donald

trump is giving them a voice but the fact of the matter is it's not to say it's wrong for them to basically stand up for what they believe in that's what this little girl was doing that's all one of the politicians getting involved in this walk and we just and i. asked them perhaps n.f.l. people to protest if they want to why is it such a big deal politically the democratic party in the united states gets their power on dividing people and separating us versus them there's class warfare gender warfare they want to show that everybody's got a reason for injustice and they need to vote democrat to war in order to fix it and that's all this is it's just it's pure politics. and hillary hillary clinton got millions more votes than donald trump did and her campaign theme was being together not dividing people she wasn't. marking here the care people she wasn't telling punch him in the drawer at all pay your legal bills that's not what her fear was thirteen was about bringing people together and she got millions or those that john i'm sorry is the voters actually disagree with you. a palestinian

spent in russia wasn't just about football. it was so much more than just sort of attending the matches it was it was really this experience of a month of making on believable amount of friends whether they be russian or foreigners i mean there was the whole project was meant to prove this idea that football is this extremely powerful tool in creating human connection and can really cut beyond the sort of divisive political narrative that we are experience in the media and really through this tool of football we actually had this passport in actual tournaments to meet people from all over the world and actually distinct credible things was most interesting was the fact that russians themselves the average citizen you know the normal football fan was really galvanized by this idea and the sort of negative press that occurred around the hooliganism situation and so that became an instance of people sort of you know stopping me on the street of my shoe she was untied if i was lost somewhere they would give me a ride to the place that wouldn't accept any money for it it was there was there was almost a sort of national fervor to actually be as welcoming is humanly possible this

tournament only gave us access to thirteen of the eleven of the cities and one third of the country you know i'm still very curious to see blood levels dog or novosibirsk or a ton of the regions across the country that sort of still remain a mystery to me it wasn't necessarily the cities like st petersburg or moscow or sochi that really surprised me it was it was more my experiences and some are ye caetera burg cities that have never likely gone to if it wasn't for this tournament that actually i discovered were incredibly interesting and unique in their own ways we can get in touch and share your thoughts on all of our stories by following us on social media we'll be back in about thirty minutes with the latest headlines for phasing.
1:46 pm
please. when a loved one is murder it's natural to seek the death penalty for the murder i would prefer it be in the death penalty just because i think that's the fair thing the right thing research shows that for every nine executions one convict is found innocent the idea that we were executing innocent people was terrifying there was
1:47 pm
just no way that doesn't mean that we will even many of the times families want the death penalty to be abolished the reason we have to keep the death penalty here is because that's what murder victims' families what that's going to give them peace that's going to give them justice and we come in and say. not quite you know we've been through this this isn't the way. reading and salutation i know it's hard to believe but the united states of america didn't invent economic sanctions the athenian empire introduced the concept of the year for thirty two b.c. and perfectly sponsored the mcgarry and decree against the trade port magara between athens and sparta the people of our work accused of planting crops on land
1:48 pm
that was consecrated to the god. this dammit or the ancient greek goddess of farming they were accused of sheltering escapes slaves from athens but the sanction were against merchants not farmers because just like modern sanctions they didn't make magara that did me it actually helped trigger a low little bitty test known as the peloponnesian war the united states sanctioning russia's nothing new either in fact the united states has been imposing economic sanctions against russia almost continually since one thousand nine hundred eighteen and for a century a century it has been next to impossible to see the value in it the latest sanctions are again for russia's alleged attack on democracy but as stephen cohen professor and americas of russian studies and politics and n.y.u. and prince says that in the nation in reality there was no attack no pearl harbor no nine eleven no russian parachuters the spending on washington only the kind of meddling and interference in other is the message politics that both countries have practiced almost ritualistically for nearly one hundred years and that kind of
1:49 pm
meddling in interference is just like what was revealed again this week when documents provided by whistleblower edward snowden to the intercepts revealed the documents showing that the n.s.a. hacked into encrypted network of news organization al jazeera why well in the words of the n.s.a. the documents recently the n.s.a. has decrypted a number of interesting targets deemed a by product lines to have high potential as sources of intelligence the u.s. targeting al jazeera again is nothing new and whether it's with sanctions or bombs it does nothing to protect democracy so let's say action the nonsense and start watching the hawks. the. real the real. liars at the bottom. like you are going to.
1:50 pm
love them everybody watching not on top of the wall this is joining me today to talk about sanctions the n.s.a. al-jazeera is former cia analyst philip giraldi thank you for joining me today thank you for having me. so u.s. secretary of the treasury stephen munch and stated that the sanctions against china singapore and russia those were related to assistance provided or trades made with north korea and in an official statement he said the tactics that these entities based in china singapore and russia are using to attempt to evade the sanctions are prohibited under u.s. law and all facets of the shipping industry have a responsibility to abide by them or expose themselves to serious risks can you
1:51 pm
help my myself as well as our viewers at home kind of understand the logic behind the tactic of imposing economic sanctions on foreign sovereign nations for not following us saw and how that makes sense and also what does this work better than diplomacy. well it depends on how you look at it and which side of the fence you're looking from. i think the united states at this point has basically given up on diplomacy. we've seen this very much over the past year plus in terms of how the state department has essentially been playing a inferior role in terms of u.s. foreign policy which is unprecedented so what the government has decided to do is essentially use the only significant leverage that it retains apart from a military invasion and that that basically is is sanctions which are
1:52 pm
a financial measure and the the issue then becomes the ability of the united states to make other countries comply with u.s. financial regulations so pretty much if you sort of tell everyone that they have to follow your rules and they won't let you play in our marketplace once economic that attach that correct. you know that's basically it i mean that the the the the the big one that's coming up of course is november fourth when the united states has decided unilaterally that iran will not be allowed to sell its oil to anyone and anyone who tries to buy iranian oil will be sanctioned by the united states and this is ridiculous i mean this this is unprecedented in terms of of foreign policy and in terms of interaction between sovereign states the united states is creating a mandate which is based on nothing because the iranians are in compliance with the
1:53 pm
nuclear agreement that they signed which the united states also signed another saying essentially we've decided that they're not in compliance without providing any evidence and they're essentially going to say to other countries you cannot have business dealings with iran this is ridiculous and yet and what how far does that end up going because you know it's a lot of burden of proof you know united states our judicial system you know i go around the world and people tell me like how important it is that we have this burden of proof and that innocent before proven guilty and how what would a bedrock of our democracy that is seen from immigrants around the world and yet in this case you know with either the north korea sanctions or the sanctions to the scruple poisoning which i haven't seen anything it makes me wonder is there a burden of proof that needs to be met when sanctions are put in place and what effect does it have if if eventually we can't prove that any of these things were
1:54 pm
a problem. you know this is this is the issue isn't there really i mean the united states has basically said we don't need any proof in the case of this cripples we've had two bouts of sanctions we've also had a whole lot of diplomats declared persona non grata from various countries over the issue and yet the british government hasn't produced on the evidence of anything actually happened and we're seeing the same thing playing out now in turkey where the united states is pressuring the nato ally and saying that you have to release this american pastor who who is in turkey and has been arrested and yet they're not even allowing the turks to present whatever evidence there is that something may have happened. one of the one of the things that one of the things that came out this week along with all of these these sort of what seem like sort of wild
1:55 pm
sanctions that just sanction everybody who doesn't agree with us which feel scary does this kind of it feels like temper tantrums and i'm getting a lot of people who are saying it seems like temper tantrums what do these temper tantrums what kind of blowback could not have economically on the united states on people of the united states because we know the sanctions you know castro never went without a meal because of sanctions you know clinton is not going to be without a meal these aren't things that hit the people at the top they have the people at the bottom so what what hurts us by doing this both to ourselves and to those people around the world. correct to say the theory involved here is that the united states believes that by putting and of financial pressure economic pressure on various countries the people will rise up and get rid of their governments or make their governments change their policies i think that's
1:56 pm
clearly what we're seeing in the case of iran the threat that the united states is going to put pressure on the iranian people and force them to rise up and get rid of their government we're seeing something like that in turkey a nato ally we've seen this played out over and over again the only thing that's unfortunate about this theory is that doesn't seem to work ready if you if if if you start attacking someone the government and you're an outsider the people in that country are going to rally around the government so it's actually a counterproductive policy but yet it seems to be the only thing that they think will work because the apart from a straight out military threat the only thing that seems to be effective at getting a response from some countries who are fed up with the united states saying do what i tell you is is to apply these economic pressures that the u.s. can indeed come up with because it controls such
1:57 pm
a large part of the financial system the global financial system. it's sort of wild because well on the one hand this week we're looking at all of these a sanctions and watching diplomacy just be i guess put into the garbage disposal and sort of walk away we also report as i talked about earlier this week that in two thousand and six while george w. bush was criticizing al jazeera for criticizing his decisions about the war when they were very vocally criticizing the west. they we find out now that during that exact same time that al jazeera was being targeted and that the n.s.a. was was sort of hacking i guess you call it or running surveillance on the news organization i find it terrifying because i think everyone from c.n.n. to our t. this is a dangerous precedent to set and i understand there are security concerns but where or. how do we how do we how do we make sense of. but thousands there well it's
1:58 pm
actually pretty it's pretty simple the works for the government work for the president the president decided and the white house decided basically that al jazeera was collaborating with the enemies of the united states in afghanistan and iraq and so they want to head with this scheme i would basically i'm not surprised by it at all they had they they considered them the enemy they wanted to crack into their secure communications system and find out what they were up to so i'm not terribly surprised by this see the u.s. government is. is basically still obsessed with the idea that everyone out there is a potential enemy and acts accordingly this is one of the tragedy of our times i mean the while they were doing this of course they were also tapping into the private communications of vo of millions and millions of american citizens illegally right and what's so interesting to me is that this al-jazeera story
1:59 pm
despite the fact that it shows a grave threat to journalists and journalism and news organizations here in the united states as well as abroad because of these things never just say with international stations these are things that are always going to be used for somewhere another and i wonder what what you think about the fact that the mainstream media is completely ignoring us like that and ignoring something so bag and while they obsess about you know the guy who created the you know the architect of the kill list john brennan losing security clearance why do you think they're so obsessed with it what is really a non-story like the john brennan losing his security clearance when there is a there's an actual threat to democracy and free speach. yeah i agree with you have saluki but see the the irony is that the john brennan story is is a big story except that the media is choosing to look at it in a in an odd way they're choosing to say oh this is the president attacking this
2:00 pm
poor man john brennan who did nothing but the fact is this that this gentleman was colluding with other foreign intelligence services to get dirt on on donald trump and his associates and he was also involved with a british an expert intelligence officer again obtaining information derogatory about the president elect donald trump so this guy is a is a major criminal there is a lot on this guy but the media is reporting it as if it were oh poor john brennan so this is this is exactly what's wrong with the media and they should be focusing on the fact that all right the n.s.a. has has broken the beauty cations of al jazeera and i'm sure it's broken the communications if you have secure communications of our t. and you know this this is a tragedy because. it wasn't even hillary clinton who said at one point she said gee if you really want to find out was cause.
