from saying sions to syria russia's security chief meets his american counterpart for talks in geneva but one topic interested journalists more than others whether you ever concerns that iran's president is a security risk of course not i mean a silly question. the u.s. democratic party cries fall over another suspected hacker but the answer turns out to have been much closer to home. also this our facebook fans hundreds of pages groups and the counseling to iran and russia for alleged political meddling also this hour. video of a british policeman slapping a teenage girl during an arrest causes outrage and triggers to bait about what
2:01 pm
constitutes reasonable force to grown police officers can find a way of restraining a fourteen year old go back to them i'll tell you what he's a soulless fourteen year old girls just like anybody else. this is our to international bring you your live news update this hour welcome to the program. the u.s. national security adviser and his russian counterpart have held more than five hours of talks in geneva but john bolton didn't give much away to reporters a short news briefing afterwards. i think we made a lot of progress we identified certain areas where lines of communication could be restored there were some where the areas of disagreement remain we didn't see. much utility in resuming discussions there are going to be
2:02 pm
some things where we're going to consider inside the united states government consider more fully what our position is and then decide to proceed from there well this meeting of national security advisors was well the groundwork was laid for it when the president met in helsinki last month today they cover the whole range of pretty much what had been touched upon a in helsinki they talked about nuclear nonproliferation they talked about cyber attacks they talked about the situation in syria in afghanistan and in ukraine as well and this meeting of course comes when relations between moscow and washington are at a particularly low ebb with sanctions from the united states against russia looming over the poisoning of said in the united kingdom earlier this year russia denies any role in the attempts on missed this could have piles of life when it came to the iranian sanctions and the iran nuclear deal john bolton unequivocal he was
2:03 pm
saying that the will be sanctions put in place against iran on doing business with iran and that the sanctions are coming in november and he's and that's the russian side didn't ask for any exemptions during the meeting today and that the u.s. side on expecting to gave many exemptions at all they also talked about a rainy and troops in syria mr bolton saying that he wanted to see both as he put it regular and irregular rainy and troops removed from syria pulled back from syria the russian side going into this it already said that they were sabine support of this book that this wasn't something that was going to be poppin. immediately as with any of these meetings when it comes to senior figures within the the trump white house and within the trump of the trumpet ministration there were questions about russian meddling and this quote this time well it was no different whether you ever concerned that iran's president is
2:04 pm
a security risk of course not i mean that's a silly question. and i just spoke to a morally a few minutes ago and. we have performed here in exactly the way i think the two leaders would have expected us to and you know i honestly have a little faith in the american people who elected him president thank you very much we waited hours in hours for mr bolton to cold but speak to us it was very short not so sweet at the end there following that question for my colleague from the b.b.c. it's worth noting that after that one of mr bolton stuff came along pulled her to one side and told her the. question was ridiculous and that they wouldn't be working with their organization in the future that shocked quite a few of the geneva diplomatic press corps. but this me thing between the two national security advisers that it didn't result in any major breakthroughs we weren't really expecting not but where they agreed they still agree where there's
2:05 pm
disagreement well there's certainly still discord between washington and moscow as it stands at the moment. a live reaction now we cross to security analyst and former u.k. army officer charles shoebridge welcome to the program now john bolton there didn't give much detail about what the two discussed but what were you able to read about how the meeting went overall. i think for many the important thing here isn't what was discussed in detail and indeed we may not learn the full details of that we probably won't but that this meeting has taken place at all it shows that despite the incessant campaign within the united states domestic environment and of course overseas that. u.s. policy still doesn't preclude hasn't percolated actually meeting with russians actually taking progress making progress on substantive issues between them it's interesting of course with john bolton his if you like he's of course very anti
2:06 pm
iran he's constantly trying to ratchet up tensions with iran and this was no exception he took the opportunity to make those comments at a press conference of course and especially so in israel yesterday but there must be a concern for some i think because of course bolton has also made it quite clear that he intends to that the u.s. will strike at syria if as he put it yesterday chemical weapons are used by the assad government in the battle for live what the effect of that may be is that it places u.s. policy if you like as the hostage of those very islamist rebels holding occupied it at the moment because of course if they were if they were to stage an attack after all this statement by bolton gives them an incentive to do that to provoke a u.s. strike on a sudden it's one of the last chances to do so of course with the winding down hopefully of the syria war of course that will absolutely destroy at least temporarily u.s. and russian relations because of course there will be
2:07 pm
a danger of conflict with russia if. u.s. and its allies strikes again into syria and for example where russian personnel to be killed so there are many unknown factors in this equation and by his own statements yesterday especially with regards to syria john bolton hasn't helped that future those future dealings with russia that today may have actually for. saluted you mention iran and bolton did say that russian the u.s. agree that their troops remain in troops should leave syria and he said that they had discussed a variety of ways that might happen how do you what do you make of how he answered that question was it invasive or diplomatic. yeah of course people would say that actually they're both the same he's being diplomatic and divisive he doesn't want to discuss in detail what was said even less what was agreed even if anything was agreed but certainly i think putin and hopefully there will be a meeting between
2:08 pm
a summit between protein and trump themselves in a small in the very near future based on this meeting that there is some scope for maneuver on both sides of course russia has made it clear that it wants and of course syria and iran would make clear to you that of course they want american troops illegally occupying them some two thousand or more troops british troops and other allies of the u.s. have got forces actually on the sovereign territory of syria which of course will need to be withdrawn as part of any final peace deal and so clearly i think and of course trump himself has said he wants a sweet tone and so maybe you've got the movement of some iranian units. at least openly can help to facilitate that but clearly the important thing as i said at the start is that these meetings are taking place despite the efforts of many within the u.s. security and foreign policy establishment to make these kind of meetings difficult if not impossible well and yes while this meeting did take place a joint statement was planned but didn't happen because apparently the u.s.
2:09 pm
wanted to bring up alleged russian meddling again how long is that going to be a sticking point between the two countries. it will absolutely continue to be a sticking point and that's particularly the case as we've seen in the last couple of days whereas the investigation that's going into this alleged russian meddling repeatedly consistently fails to bring up produce any evidence of it actually happening even though we've got guilty pleas in linked cases none of those of course or guilty findings i should say none of those actually relate directly to the central allegation of this investigation which is alleged russian meddling in the election so intil of that investigation ends one way or another of course it's going to continue to be a sore point and one that is going to be continually brought up by mr trump's very many enemies not only within the democrats producer in his own party and of course his enemies and even some of his allies abroad that he can't be trusted enough of
2:10 pm
course there's no actual incentive for this investigation to end anytime soon simply because apart from from trunks perspective simply because even though it's not producing any evidence so long as a possibility that it may do in the future notwithstanding its record to date of course that can be used as a stick with which to damage ongoing russian american relations good relations what needs to be done or is there anything that can be done to finally resolve the meddling. but really the investigation has to come to an end but as i say the motives isn't there for that to happen there either has to be for example if it's true that it took place then of course it could end by russia admitting its guilt and saying it won't happen again but why would they do that if indeed it's not true or even if it is true that there's no danger of it being found and one would have expected with this kind of very high profile investigation full of resources full
2:11 pm
of legal powers intense investigation in the us that by now it would have found some vested found some evidence it will run by law and it will be continued to be used by trump's particular domestic enemies to give the suggestion that he can't be trusted with american his affairs and particularly the allegation of course that he's a traitor and somehow approved of putin notwithstanding that again and again he seems to show in his policies that he isn't is that meddling overshadowing other important discussions that would normally take place at discussions like this. yeah they're designed to do so if you think about the fact that trump was elected on a mandate of improving relations with russia he's largely been unable to fill up the election pledge because of the allegations of meddling those allegations themselves are worth looking at of course in terms of where those allegations come from and it's interesting the degree to which i want to give him that we're talking
2:12 pm
about allegations of russian meddling that actually it was the united kingdom and its intelligence services are the q or former. former m i six officers such as christopher steele who put together the claims i was going to say evidence but certainly the allegations largely i'm substantiated allegations that have been used to smear and discredit trump none of that what i'm saying is to support trump either way it's simply to say that actually in terms of pure hard evidence as in terms of in respect of so many of the allegations we hear against russia or against iran or even against career that are coming out from the us government and repeated in the western media without question the evidence simply hasn't been produced even if it's there and of course that applies no better of course in any case to what the case you mentioned earlier which of course the case of crippling his daughter poisoned in the u.k.
2:13 pm
again allegations made repeated largely uncritically by a compliant media and no evidence yet produced even it seems to the u.k. so european allies security analyst and former u.k. army officer charles childred thank you very much for joining us on the program this evening. another day another hacking scandal now the us democratic party has claimed it's detected an attempt to hack its voter database with elections just a few months away. the thames is further proof that there are constant threats as we head into the midterm elections and we must remain vigilant in order to prevent future attacks first it looked like just another meddling story in the endless stream of meddling reports that we've come across lately and the democratic party said that it had detected an attempt to hack its voter base and of course total panic ensued in the media check it out d.n.c. just confirm the n.b.c.
2:14 pm
news it has alerted authorities to an attempt to have all their voter file and the takeaway really is is this continues to be a major issue democratic party's voter database targeted with a sophisticated hacking attempt to target really was the voter database any attack on a political party or campaign is important for us all to take seriously but there is a twist here it wasn't meddling or hacking it was just a test according to a source the democratic party or the democratic party of michigan used volunteer hackers to test its systems security while this was confirmed by the national committee the source also said that the state department did not notify the d.n.c. the national committee before hand let's take a look at what was said. we along with the partners who reported the sites now believe it was billed by a third party as part of a simulated fishing test the test which mimics several attributes of actual tax on the democratic party's votes to follow was not authorized by the d.n.c.
2:15 pm
vote builder nor any other vendors now the timing of all of this is worth noting it's coming just as we're getting closer and closer to midterm elections that the media is going crazy frantically searching for external factors but they've turned a blind eye to domestic factors which could be where their answers are. britain's opposition leader says the public's losing trust with the news media and says he's got big plans to revamp the b.b.c. jeremy corbyn out of the broadcaster should be freed of government control as he lambasted other media bosses for skewing the news agenda almost all flying. prince too often sets the broadcast agenda even though it is worth it so firmly to the tories politically and to corporate interests more generally the cozy relationship between senior press broadcasting executives media owners and indeed senior politicians b.b.c. could be and is i believe tacitly influenced by government u.k.
2:16 pm
opposition leader jeremy gorgons there presenting his views on the state of the media today and how exactly it should move forward now in terms of what he had to say about the b.b.c. despite praising this is a very important british institution he did go want to see that he believes it's time for some changes including the reduction of political influence and the b.b.c. being freed from government control he said it needs to be democratized more independent and more representative and this was part of the bigger picture he was painting about the state of affairs when it comes to the media and the press in the u.k. he did talk quite a bit about this relationship that he sees as a little bit too close for comfort he did see that he believes much of the press isn't very free at all the british press is the least trusted in europe including normally e.u. countries like north macedonia and serbia the worry about new forms of news and
2:17 pm
we've heard plenty of that we've ignored the fact that most of our citizens think our newspapers churn out what they believe to be fake news every day well apart from proposals about putting in place a revamp for the b.b.c. opposition leader corben also work talked about the need to increase the influence of public interest journalism as well as local newspapers that he sees as now being quite underfunded and not being able to properly function while they're an important part of communities around this country he also said there should be a creation of a british digital corporation and overall said he believes that public. i should have more control of the press and the media as opposed to those in power in terms of a statement on the b.b.c. we did reach out to them for commentary and they told us they are not commenting on this topic we heard from political analyst chris bambery who said jeremy corbin's
2:18 pm
ideas reflect what the british public thinks you know the b.b.c. in particular been seen as being biased in representing those views so i think particularly young people there is a growing view that the b.b.c. and the established media is on the side of the elite is on the side of the corporations who after all or most of the newspapers in the media in this country was in the interest of both of their highnesses the b.b.c.'s finances come from a license that every viewer has to buy but the government sets the cost of that license and what court saying is really and the government control over that because that can be used to influence the b.b.c. direct way of or i think we're proposing is very interesting and really hiving the b.b.c. or from any direct government pellets. facebook's upping the ante and it's crusade against fake news it's now banned hundreds of pages it claims are linked to iran
2:19 pm
and russia for allegedly trying to sway a political opinion here is it we're trying to with more. thanks for joining us franco with your latest news in the world of social media facebook and twitter have gotten rid of suspicious accounts spewing fakes and propaganda from iran the troll factories not only after the minds of the americans but users all over the world it's claimed to be run by iran's government media. not us of the by. some of them through. facebook already enables users to check if they've been exposed to russian balls and trolls how many trolls does it take to incite i've evolution scores of so-called russian bots took over twitter and facebook some stories never seem to die well this facebook slash twitter online police raid is an actual news story this week yeah you can take plenty of the earlier reports replace
2:20 pm
the word russia with iran and get pretty much identical stuff all right speaking of facebook this time it bad six hundred twenty five pages traced to iran and an unknown number of pages linked to russia it just wouldn't work if russia didn't get mentioned and the reason for this verdict is we removed multiple pages groups and accounts for coordinated in offensive behavior on facebook and instagram what kind of sin is this in authentic behavior let's hear from zox people they use similar tactics by creating networks of accounts to mislead others about who they were and what they were doing we ban this kind of behavior because we want people to be able to trust the connections they make on facebook the issue of trusting what pops out at you from the internet it's almost as old as i am. ask her where we should meet.
2:21 pm
it seems like you're chatting with somebody just like yourself not only even if they show a picture of themselves it may not really be who they say they are it could be somebody dangerous i'm not trying to say criminals who take advantage of online platforms shouldn't be banned or prosecuted but dear facebook the way the internet and social networks have worked for years is that users can be who they want to be online who said they must stick to what someone thinks is authentic behavior what if i want to be an elf or santa or a real news hound and my now going to be blamed for an authentic behavior and get a red card sooner or later i. universe. will come to the oasis for all the things they can do i. may stay
2:22 pm
because of all the things they can well looks like online platforms will force us to adjust to a new reality where a step away from your genuine behavior may lead to a ban or some distinguished fact checkers will tell you who you should or shouldn't trust how's this for a policy update facebook's just announced it will assess how good or how bad their users are at flagging fake news we developed a process to protect against people indiscriminately flagging news is fake and attempting to game the system the reason we do this is to make sure that our fight against misinformation is as effective as possible i think it's political pressure i think it really comes down to that they are putting themselves. in the position of mediating human relationships which is first of all a very unhealthy thing to do and it's something. that they really are grossly.
2:23 pm
incompetent to do the users primarily will not know what is being done to them and they will be manipulated in all sorts of ways we don't know what kind of place so next when he tries to complain about a post online think twice what if the fact checkers disagree in fact whatever you do they're better think twice statistics meanwhile suggest the social media site might be losing some of its sparkle one ranking service has calculated the amount of time visitors spent on the platform is down ten percent this month it also reveals that visitors interest is slipping facebook are yet to respond to our request for comment. video has emerged of a british police officer slapping a fourteen year old girl during an arrest the images soon spread online and divided public opinion please be aware the video we're about to show you does contain scenes of violence. that you're ok we're. going to.
2:24 pm
get. you're going to come running over you don't shoot ok sure it. was funny. ok all right did you. know police say they were responding to a disturbance involving youths fighting and while attempting to get the girl under control a male officer struck the teenager in the face it's claimed that was in response to her trying to grab his taser and police radio the girl and a fifty two year old woman were arrested on suspicion of assault two officers had to receive medical treatment for bites and cuts here's a little of the reaction there's been to the incident why would a fully grown man police officer. strike a fourteen year old go the video shows nothing more than police brutality. the
2:25 pm
officers in question need sacking the open palm head was to disorientate her so they could get her arms she was being very violent in my opinion and that force was very necessary. agent john done no excuses for resisting arrest there's no deserved or not about it he used adequate force to protect himself and detain the suspect meanwhile police chiefs have justified the officer's actions saying the video does not give him full picture of the situation we understand this british man appear concerning however officers are trained to use restraint techniques which may look shocking to untrained on will curse earlier on our team former british police inspector peter kirk i'm and social justice campaigner george barda went head to head over the incident clearly to many people like myself it seems that there must have been a better way of dealing with that situation than bashing that go in the head in bashing the head into a metal shutter to grown place officers can find
2:26 pm
a way of restraining a fourteen year old go back to them i'll tell you what you say tell us i just tell us if that's why this is this is wise and tell us your the police of the you tell me the only alternatives available to that officer the i could say were allowed to keep a name and snatching his taser and radio was very well taken to the ground and you'd be moaning about heavy police officers on a four year old go on the ground and if the officers use of force isn't right then he would be prosecuted all disciplined for it that act of bashing that was bashing that guy in the head and i do think it makes a difference that it was a forty year ago if he was a you know six foot tall man i think would be a different situation in terms of a place where i think if the police on trained to deal with fourteen year old girls that are being violent in ways that don't require them to bash them in their heads into metal metal shutters since any police officer uses any force whatsoever it's described as police brutality which it isn't you also keep saying for
2:27 pm
a lot that has any relevance fourteen year old girls can cause are just like anybody else telling me that two grown police officers two grown police officers with four limbs to deal with on one person they can't restrain those four. the limbs and and the body without bashing the head into mental chatter and to go back to a point i made before and i don't feel you just wasn't watching it too and you should have told it was a zero as i say. this is about recognizing that if the police can respond to a video like that with with pure defensiveness i think the problem is already going to get worse between sections of the public that already have a lot of doubts about the police close matter in the us for instance it's not as if the police haven't been brutalizing people for many years it's that people now have small times who can record it would be better off supporting the police in trying to keep older and questioning why fourteen year old girls have brawling in the street with all the children of that age instead of questioning the actions of the police doing their best to deal with that situation. finally some breaking news
