age and he's you know new ideas before the future of the country. the former first minister of scotland alex salmond has taken the country's government to court he claims it's inquiry into his alleged sexual misconduct is illegal now the case revolves around allegations of sexual harassment made by two staffers and has since been part of the police the incumbent first minister nicola sturgeon who's a close ally of simon showed she wants to see the investigation move forward even though it could have undesirable ramifications for her party. for my party this will be extremely upsetting to members of the s.n.p. up and down the country it's a difficult situation but what is important is that complaints are treated seriously regardless of who the person complained about is i can confirm that the scottish government receives two complaints in january in relation to an exam and

understand and what i am not frightened of going to the highest court in the land to establish that it seems the scottish government looks a bit shaky in their position or anything like this depends on having a fair show having a feel opportunity and overfed the scottish government process doesn't do that he don't get to see the evidence you don't get to present your own case i was barred from speaking to any civil servant many of whom incidentally have texted me today saying why didn't you come to us to support your position well the reason is i was banned from doing that by miss leslie evans the family of seti the scottish government i wasn't allowed to contact them directly so if you can't present your own case you've got an unjust process. these investigations dependent could vent today that confidentiality if you don't have that then how in there are people going to have the confidence to complete in future because not just the person complained of oh it's the confidentiality of the complainants and the scottish

government would break the lack of the bench ality so we told them and to not make that statement because we were taking the action in the court session but it's an extraordinary situation when the scottish government starts to break is ordered confidentiality after the shooting everybody connected with this that that was going to be absolutely protected for the process. well let's understand what's unique about the scottish government process of talking about events of many years ago when i'm not or a serving scottish government minister i'm not even an m.p. or m.s.p. at the present moment and therefore it's really important if you try and introduce such a retrospective to see. so you make sure that the passenger who is being complained of it has the opportunity to properly present the case the scottish government's been making the position look that should apply to everybody including former fust ministers i absolutely agree and everybody including former foster mother still so

evident in the law and is intitled to a fee of process and the chance to state the case fairly well could be wrong without but no you know what i say the only good i can see coming out of this is we're on our way to the court of session that's a real court of real judgment with the a process is they'll make the decision and then we'll all have to buy. china has reportedly decided to wait and see what happens with donald trump before engaging in any trade talks with and that story and more just about.

thanks for joining us here while recent tweets suggest donald trump is eager to engage in fresh trade talks with china it appears beijing is less than keen i mean talk of impeachment reports say the chinese are going to going to now wait until after the u.s. midterms to see how things pan out for the american president ok and explains. prayed talks between the usa and china have failed again now trump would like to push all the blame on to beijing however the situation deal mess to clean might have more to do with it chinese state media is openly arguing the trump is using the trade wars and tariffs as a gimmick in order to win political support trump likely to feel it's a cool headed midterm elections the meet term elections are one of the key reasons the u.s. has maintained a tough stance towards china made list to say china is not eager to play into trump's hand officials there and reportedly said that they're suspending the talks

until after the midterm vote it makes pretty good sense for china to cancel the talks until after november why because of the midterm vote doesn't go in terms favor it could be more than congress that's up for change i don't know how you can impeach somebody who's done a great job if i ever got a ph i think the market would pressure i think everybody would be very poor might think trumps playing with fire by saying i'm doing a good job don't impeach me especially when it's pretty clear the i word is on everyone's mind you could say it's the talk of the town in washington d.c. could he be impeached with this impeach trump the idea of impeachment time for impeachment you could have even been preachment is probably likely but there is i think a lot for the president to fear compared to the previous administration top seems to have done almost a one eighty when it comes to dealing with the people's republic of china we welcome the peaceful. rise of china consistent with international norms that's good

for everybody we are being taken advantage of and i don't like it so you have to ask the question are those who talk about impeaching donald trump really doing american business is a favor after all the idea that donald trump might be packing his bags after november doesn't really put him in a strong spot when it comes to practicing his art of the deal mantra the chinese have adopted if fairly strong if not hard line position for the time being the chinese feel that they have been betrayed and mr trump has not followed through on his word they had a joint statement and a consensus that north tariffs were going to be issued the china agreement are collapsed within a week and of this point of time there's just no trumpet nor trust in his word but i do not see. serious decisions and serious outcomes coming out from these discussions over the next couple of months china is holding on to beyond the

a government would be rocked by this sort of dysmorphia altie and deliberate. insurgency is the best buy to describe it deliberate destructive action. at a time when you know the debt there are differences on policy but frankly all of them are. sort of result you know i will to be resolved with a little bit of good will. politics as they say is a full contact sport. and turning from politics to economics australian policy makers have stepped into a familiar controversy and barred chinese tech firms while weigh n z t e from any role in building a national five g. internet infrastructure on the island continent while way official responded on twitter expressing disappointment as well as protesting that it is privately held firm the role of chinese firms in five g. projects and and wall ways specifically has become a contentious issue in the u.s.

but even more so in australia questions of excessive chinese economic influence and concerns about attempts to spy on the making of aussie foreign policy have roiled internal politics now two ministers including the new prime minister mr morrison and one of his final acts as treasurer have declared companies that quote are likely to be subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government will be banned from five g. projects though neither name neither company was named. in a speech today at the jackson hole symposium that we noted felt a reserve chairman jay powell laid out what seems to be many as solid and sanguine outlook for the future the chairman said he sees little if any risk of an overheating economy and he expects strong u.s. economic progress to continue he also said while there is no clear signal inflation is accelerating beyond what the fed targets they will do whatever it takes to

address and should it become problematic here discusses the always oppressive and thought provoking c.e.o. of quill intelligence daniel de martino both who joins us from dan dallas daniel welcome what's your overall take on the speech. you know i think the speech it was very much jay powell esque he was painfully balanced in his remarks and he brought up a lot of good points though that i think many have not touched on. the markets obviously closed near their highs of the session based on the what you just mentioned that there were there was no risk of the economy overheating at the moment but bart i was really intrigued with what he had to say in his speech about inflation not necessarily being what should guide monetary policy makers given that the last two recessions have been not preceded by inflation overheating but rather by the financial markets overheating so it's
8:54 am
a nuance statement that he put in there but it was very critical from the perspective of people who follow the markets as we do and you can help me understand something because i use a phrase that i've heard before but it's really being used in the wake of the speech and that phrase is a neutral setting that rates are in a neutral setting and and people are suggesting maybe that setting is you know two point five or three percent but what constitutes a neutral setting danielle and and are those the correct rates for such a neutral setting. well neutral really just means the rate of the federal funds rate the overnight lending rate that will not cause the it's the goldilocks rate that the economy will not overheat nor will the economy slow at this particular neutral rate the economy can just hum along it's a very idealistic notion it is the ultimate target of all central bankers worldwide for them to find that perfect not too hot not too cold rate palettes of what they
8:55 am
stated that he would prefer that that neutral rate be closer to three percent which implies at least another four more rate hikes in the current tightening cycle clearly some of the more devilish people on the federal open market committee and others who would prefer interest rates to stay low or would rather that neutral rate be a lot closer to two percent and president trump has made it pretty clear that he thinks rates should stay low but you know that comes from his perspective right the president comes from a real estate and business and so of course he likes low rates we'd all like to buy things that cheaper rates but what are the reasons the monetary policy reasons danielle not to raise rates. well there are reasons not to raise rates if you if you fear that the economy is slowing and powell brought that out in his speech today that and naturally that came out in the minutes from the federal open market committee that were released on wednesday as well that there are
8:56 am
several threats to the economy that could indeed put the fed on hold make them pull back from this tightening cycle perhaps go in september but pause it in december and maybe not go again until january until they have a little more clarity but we know that residential housing for example has has begun to slow down they boycott concerns about that in the minutes and then there's always the possibility that the trade war continues to escalate and that of course will will continue to slow the economy to slow corporate profit growth as well we'll get a better picture into that next wednesday with the second release of the second quarter g.d.p. which will give us our first look at what profits are according to the to government statistics great we look forward to that and when the chairman testified before congress last month danielle he was pretty diplomatic and political if you will answering questions about the potential impact to the trade wars on our economy but but doesn't that issue have to be front and center what the fed
8:57 am
governors are looking to going forward i mean i recall it was mentioned a little bit in the minutes from the meeting but isn't a trade war an obvious thing that that could put the brakes on the growing economy . well i think that because a trade war and economic speak translates into higher inflation then of course the fed will be irresponsible and derelict in its duties if it was not discussed in the trade war and again that that's that's why this subject came up in the minutes that were released earlier this week by every right they should be talking about the potential for the trade war to bleed into rising prices and that's exactly where their focus is and that's exactly where their focus should be part danielle you're always so insightful for us help explain things that a base level and then take us even deeper we sure appreciate it the c.e.o. of quill intelligence daniel de martino booth's thanks danielle thank you have

a great weekend. it's been a week of trade talks on tariffs and the potential economic impact of those tariffs and the efforts to strike a new deal with mexico for the latest on mexico canada nafta the north american free trade agreement and the ongoing trade tensions with china we are joined by our tease alex mohai live from toronto alex thanks for being with us let's start with nafta perhaps or maybe it's better to talk about the bilateral mexico u.s. trade deal of might that might be more appropriate what's going on. well we were hoping to see a trade deal this week actually between mexico and the states that doesn't look like it's going to happen now the sticking point really is automotive looks like these talks are going to be pushed into next week and i think all three parties including canada are hoping to see some results from these talks simply because we've heard from mexico saying that we need to get this phase done so that can take either candidate can be included in the talks once again we know that president trump has played a tricky game with the with canada mexico first at the very beginning of the nafta
8:59 am
talks kind of pushing mexico aside and now he's pushing canada aside and dealing directly with the mexicans but as i mentioned all three parties are hoping that this is going to move forward at least the mexicans and canadians are and by the way it looks things are pretty positive right now but these nafta talks you never know until somebody signs that dotted line absolutely and in addition to the mexican negotiators there's been a chinese delegation here in washington and they're currently however seems to be no end in sight to the tip for tat trade war what's the goal of the administration here just to draw this thing out or they really want to get something done you know bar we've been talking about this forever it seems like in the whole fact of the matter is i i was wrong in the beginning i honestly thought the trip was going to play the short game and just basically you know come in and really hard line and that somehow he was going to push china into a position where or that he even talked to president jiang that they had some sort of resolution after this you know tough guy image was allowed to show itself to the
9:00 am
world but it doesn't seem that way and actually things are going to be drawn out by the looks of things because nothing was accomplished at these talks we're looking now next month that we saw a tit for tat now at sixteen billion dollars worth of tariffs thrown in by the states and of course china doing what it does with that same amount back and now we're looking at another two hundred billion in tariffs possibly next month from the u.s. side of course we'll see the chinese throw back at that and doll shops even saying he might push it to five hundred billion dollar. now a lot of the analysts are saying that this might be a largely a long term gain for trump that he's trying to push a new status quo which would be tariffs especially when dealing with china and some other analysts are saying and this is interesting that at this point if trump was to back down if this was actually to be resolved he'd come out looking weak because the people would see that these tariffs have actually gotten done more harm than good to the states and that if he was in this terrible war that actually would be
