of the i.m.f. she also said the i.m.f. effort to intervene in argentina is just beginning let's take a listen to what she had to say this week in argentina. who can. see no. progress. in putting together. in the deal the macro administration agreed to spending more spending cuts to balance the national budget in twenty nineteen a year ahead of previous plans and to run a one percent surplus and twenty twenty the market ministration also agreed to adopt a floating exchange rate on their badly battered economy and that the argentine central bank would only make a limited intervention in the case of what misled guard called extreme overshooting of the exchange rate the agreement is already controversial given argentine history the i.m.f. was widely blamed within argentina for contributing to their economic collapse back
12:31 pm
in two thousand and two after that collapse argentina actually defaulted temporarily on their i.m.f. loans the government later paid the loans in full then effectively renounce the i.m.f. or they say about biting the hand that feeds you. and moving north into the east the brazilian state oil country petro abbas has agreed to pay a fine over eight hundred fifty three million dollars to settle the so-called car wash corruption case that we've talked about before in the united states u.s. justice department to go shit of the settlement announced it this morning in a statement the department said the deal resolves alleged bribes that led officials to threaten petro boss officials with charges under the foreign corrupt practices act the assistant director at the us federal bureau of investigation the f.b.i. said quote the hefty eight hundred fifty three point two million criminal penalty should act as a deterrent to anyone seeking to perpetuate this kind of fraud in the future but your boss stock rose four percent on the news. and moving to north america the

trump ministration reportedly plans to pressure canada on renegotiation of. nafta the north american free trade agreement this week by publishing new text that only includes mexico for their part canadian officials seem to be in no rush to meet us the mezz they say the they are confident that negotiating objectives approved by the us congress will prevent mr trump from completing a revision that leaves canada behind on wednesday mr trump complained of high canadian terrace yet again and threaten to tax imported canadian cars he also claimed he had rejected a request for personal meeting from canadian print my prime minister justin trudeau due to terrorist a spokesperson denied mr trump's claim of a meeting request. and last week the united states imposed two hundred billion dollars worth of tariffs on chinese goods coming into the u.s. then for good measure the u.s. placed economic sanctions upon china's military for purchasing russian military
12:33 pm
equipment russia of course has economic sanctions placed upon the nation by the u.s. an air go others that do business with those sanctions like russia may have sanctions placed upon them that is the case in this circumstance but the matter gets murky and muddy and quick here to help us sort all out is pentagon official former pentagon official michael maloof michael so good to see you if you haven't been on for a while we really appreciate it pleasure ok so let's talk about this i mean they were the chinese were none too happy with this they even went so far they some really sharp language canceled a visit by i think that the vice president to come here to talk trade that was off and then they've even said your big office is an aircraft carrier but a military navy vessel going into hawkeyes it can even dock there next month what do you make of all this because it was an aircraft carrier that's rare that they deny those kind of but there's a there's a trade war going on but it's even greater than that you have the united states and
12:34 pm
china. looking looking at from a strategic standpoint and if you'll recall the united states changed its defense pos. your strategy to look at russia and china as global one of them hogs the russian coastline in the north and that goes down through the car a c. and comes down to the north sea and comes down to rotterdam the other one of course starts at the bering straits goes up the other way and comes down through baton bay in newfoundland and greenland but that those going to be used of course march through september and they even during that time need icebreakers however there is the prediction with global warming and that's why a lot more as you say is going through the arctic with the prediction of global warming by twenty fifty they could be a route that goes literally straight over the top of the arctic. wow that sounds like a reality show to i can see them breaking through the ice and having the amorous on board and will be sixty that. now tell me about which companies are we talking about these big companies and what are the carriers to lose crude oil and they're
12:35 pm
carrying dry goods mostly crude oil natural gas liquefied gas the major companies of course most musk is a huge container company they carry like twenty thousand containers here one of these huge vast vessels but also costco because costco controls the supply chain and to end and also some of the china hold a holding companies and how much could this save them i mean they're cutting off all this distance as you say not a call miles but then also on the fuel i mean how much can they save and will it actually help them turn of a better profit which they've been slim on profits lately yeah absolutely and it saves at the moment about ten days if you go up over that northern route but it's predicted to save up to eighteen days one of the problems though is because of the ice breakers needed with unpredictable weather sometimes it can be slowed down where as you don't get that on the other route one thing that's very interesting everybody remembers probably that movie captain phillips you know there are pirates so there's some danger going off that somali coast there's been
12:36 pm
a lot of issues where there isn't so much danger going over the northern route but there are some of the issues that are dangerous it does save about five hundred forty million gallons of fuel. oh my god a lot and that's so for the reality show we have to have some enemy but i guess it's not going to be pirates on icebergs but maybe we'll have something else the ice breakers or any other problems that they have with this road is a lot of them we all remember portis shackleton and what happened you know if something happened shackleton of course was in the antarctic but nevertheless in those sort of climates and then in the arctic in the winter it's dreadful so they don't go bot even in those those either end of the season you've got inclement weather you have the ice breaking but you also have what if there's a crude oil spill how do you control that how do you contain it and what do you do with crew members and what do you do if there has to be an evacuation where do they go there on to the supply stations there's no one to help of there in the middle of nowhere they're not near any coast so i think that's that's rather dangerous the russians have been building
12:37 pm
a lot more ports along the russian coast so of course that would make it more helpful along that coast and i know a lot of those we're going to cover this in the coming days as some of those islands off the coast of russia are actually controversial and we'll be talking about that as we go for yes here for which sea austro mark thank you so much hilary there's reshape it. and time now for a quick break but stick around because when we return we get a new perspective on the cryptocurrency is around the world with henri arse where you. i'm sorry peter see i've been hoping to get this guy on for a long time for you guys that he's here today plus the host of the big picture and veteran media consultant holland cook gives us the inside scoop about how the business of television is changing and some of t.v.'s old is now new to slip in a quick break and as we do here are the numbers at the closing bell back in a flash.

u.s. president donald trump took center stage at the united nations this week the middle east was very much on his mind particularly in iran for some sitting in the general assembly trump's words were simply laughable however what is happening in the middle east and beyond is anything but fun. you know we need to go back to. force that's. also the position of the guy that's the. case even though there is a number of content to go back to the.

legislators are facing a choice in their twenty one thousand budgeting to either meet their spending pledges to voters or police officials from the european union who are seeking to keep italian deficits well under brussels preferred outer limit of three percent of gross domestic product eight. formal proposal on levels of spending and debt is due from italian finance or finance minister giovanni tree at six pm eastern time in the us but reports that his meeting with e.u. officials could be delayed has rattled investors mr tree is not associated with either the league party or the five star movement meanwhile in comments to the media the top leaders of both coalition parties push for more fiscal space to annex pending increases promised by five star and tax cut commitments from the league. in other u.k. news the labor party has unveiled their economic agenda at the opposition party's annual conference among the platform plank that they demand that workers be given

the power to elect one third of the seats on the boards of all companies in the u.k. with more than two hundred fifty employees that standard would grant this measure of workplace democracy to an estimated ten point seven million workers current prime minister trace i'm a made a similar but much less optimistic or robust proposal back in twenty sixteen labor leader jeremy corbin pledged at the meeting quote by ensuring businesses reserve a third of the board seats for workers will help transform our broken economic model corben ally john mcdonald who is slated to become the u.k.'s top treasury if this vishal the chancellor of the exchequer if labor takes power promised bold action to labor conference he said quote the greater the mess we inherit the more radical we have to be. and right hailing service company over has agreed to a settlement of one hundred forty eight million dollars over charges that the company concealed a major data breach from regulators to twenty six team breach involved information

from fifty seven million people including drivers and customers a lot of us overpaid the hackers who obtained the data one hundred thousand dollars in ransom to delete it and did not publicly disclose the break until november of two thousand and seventeen illinois attorney general. lisa madigan recounted the case against the company who was aware for well over a year that they had been hacked and that that driver's license information had been obtained and so what they should have done is as quickly as possible notify the drivers notify the stated that there was a breach and make amends at that point instead the previous leadership under did not disclose that there had been a breach and therefore we had to take legal action to enforce our laws. we now are one of our favorite subjects yet again crypto currencies and this time i am so what's pleased to bring in someone who i've been hoping to bring to you for months i met him almost a year ago at hong kong
12:44 pm
a copper incident and working out the time difference between here and hong kong has been a problem and i didn't have the guts quite frankly to ask him to join us at zero dark thirty for the show in hong kong but he's in the states now and he's in our studios so we really appreciate the leader here he is the big four accounting at the big four accounting firm pricewaterhouse coopers henri we so much appreciate you being here thanks so much we covered the banks yesterday and their private or internal ledger but what are you seeing globally happen in the crypto space. thank you bart very happy to be here actually bart if you take a step back from the madness of the markets on a daily basis you can actually see some big macro trends shaping up that are affecting the crip the markets globally for example one of them is the entry of institutional players in the space and by that i'd only i don't really mean the investment banks the goldman sachs or the of this world but also the brother service provider eco system from custody to exchanges and this is forcing the
12:45 pm
industry to be more lies which is generally quite positive but also the other big trend that we are seeing is the rise of enforcement cases but also new regulatory frameworks for example over the last couple months regulators of from around the world have taken action against a lot of the bad actors in the space which again has been relatively well received but what has been really interesting barth has been to see some countries really come up with crypto friendly policies to try to become the powerhouses for example over the last couple weeks we've seen countries like france the united arab emirates or even thailand come up with such policies yet i know you know i'm really when when we were i mean you're and you're in a long time but when i was there for that speech last year the minister of the monetary fund i mean he in hong kong is very open and welcoming to beas things they've got regulations they're just they make sense as opposed to trying to fit you know securities regulations or futures regulations wrap that around kryptos how
12:46 pm
about exchanges what are you seeing with the crypto exchanges and the regulation of those as opposed to the i c o's etc. absolutely i think the next couple months will be very important for how the exchanges of all and i don't mean how crypto exchanges will react to external market movements for example of a slowdown in trading volumes or potential hikes but i mean also some regular actions as well a good example bart has been actually here in new york where two weeks ago the new york attorney general came out with a report saying that a lot of the crypto exchanges lacked sufficient internal controls for example on matters like conflicts of interest protection of customer funds or even market manipulation and i expect to see over the coming months a lot of these crypto exchanges adopt some of these best practices that frankly have been around financial markets for a long time and that may change the landscape and actually volved how crypto
12:47 pm
exchanges operate today that's so great and that's the good part of of old regulations you know taking the best practices from what we know in markets like. the know your customer money laundering but then you look at like value volatility rather on really and you see how to cripple markets sort of go on a roller coaster ride and regulators say wait a minute that doesn't look like regular markets there's got to be something wrong but you know henri what are we going to do about some of the other sort of you know the underbelly or the weak spots in crypto because you and i both want them to go forward but things like manipulation things like you know there's not a there's not an insurance fund if you lose your money if it's hacked how are these things going to be dealt with. that's great question bart as you know from your former life it's actually very difficult to come up with proper regulations to cover the space because the industry is moving so fast what we are seeing in the
12:48 pm
market right now is a lot of best practices there are often community driven where the industry comes together and says these are some of best practice is we all want to abide with because we believe it's in the best interest of the community and for example you mentioned hong kong before the association of hong kong recently came up with a best practice document for ice use recently a system of dissociation of brokers did one for crypto exchanges and i expect to see many more such best practice initiatives pop up all around the world and lastly one of the things that i think is sort of cool is the emergence of crypto funds because there may be a lot of investors who really aren't ready to go in and actually buy bitcoin or ripple ureter but they might be willing to get into a fund and take sort of a wider berth on these things what's happening with the crypto funds. it's great question bart i think over the last couple months we've seen an emergence really of crypto funds globally what's been interesting is that obviously there's a lot of demand for institutional investors for because investing in the crypt
12:49 pm
a fund as you mentioned as a great way for them to get exposure but also learn about the ecosystem similar to a lot of institutional investors dealt with hedge funds private equity funds and venture capitals over the last couple of decades what some of the challenges we're actually seeing in practice when it comes to crypto funds are often very simple custody for example although there's a lot of people working on coming up with proper custody solutions for the funds that's one of the areas where this alleged gap and that is affecting a lot of a lot of institutional capital entering the space on really harsh lady and i can't tell you how pleased i am you have a you do like a tweet or something for sixty seconds that i was on so i owe you now that you came on and did this we appreciate you being here so much and that's a crypto leader for pete obviously prices. waterhouse coopers thanks ron but it's a pleasure being here.
12:50 pm
and we now move to take a look at how the business of television is changing for the inside scoop we are once again pleased to be joined by our friend veteran media consultant and host of the big picture right here on r.t. america holland and cook who joins us holland welcome back always a pleasure commish now let's get right to one of the key things that is different nielsen the ratings service was just been out there they're up for sale what's going on with that well who needs ratings any more if you look at t.v. or not t.v. that is the question traditionally a.b.c. c.b.s. n.b.c. thrived on advertising revenue but look what's t.v. now it's netflix it's amazon it's h.b.o. these are subscription services that hit your credit card like clockwork they're not selling commercials at all so suddenly the need for ratings is less and we saw some little evidence of that i guess it was last week when they have the enemy
12:51 pm
awards right well the emmy awards in olden times used to be a.b.c. c.b.s. and n.b.c. taking turns taking home the statue right fact and that's all there was well there's a new sheriff in town because among this year's big winners amazon the marvelous misses my zell best comedy best actress best writing and best directing for a comedy series h.b.o.'s game of thrones want to couple netflix among other awards best actress for the crown which i am addicted to i'm going to watch the whole thing again when i finish it so this is now mainstream t.v. this is no longer a novelty t.v. it's no longer new this is what people watch so. where does that leave you know the old fogy the trifecta the old networks the three well of all times to ask this is the new fall season the new shows have begun and you'll see among them some oldies
12:52 pm
but goodies the new magnum p.i. was so good i watched it twice and as an oh ma to tom selleck michigander the new magnum where is the detroit tigers could they have a mustache. well but he doesn't have one but they kept the music which i think is appropriate and you can't get enough hawaii t.v. murphy brown and his bergen back tonight feasting on material donald trump serves up every day and the f.b.i. is back just as the president is trashing the bureau we've never needed inspector erskin more but at any time in history ever and ever ever worse efrem zimbalist jr when in needham but all eyes will be on a.b.c.'s reboot of roseanne sans roseanne whose full cost the quick cancellation of a skyrocket ratings hit last year and again as murphy brown will that show hitchhike on trump material they played it very well so let's see how they explain
12:53 pm
away her being away on the new roseanne show you make the old not only sound new but sound pretty interesting but i mean why are they started you know dredging up some of these older shows do you think well two reasons it's an easy pitch viewers understand the concept beloved characters they welcome back advertisers get it and frankly trump not only is he feeding shows like murphy brown and roseanne but i think that there is an appetite for escapism back to the tried and true the shows we remember fondly how in cook host of the big picture right here on r t what time does it air we're on fridays now at one thirty pm in addition to our usual time seven and ten thirty pm eastern and a bunch of times on our team. international over the weekend and if you miss that there youtube dot com slash the big picture r.t. holland cook it's always such a pleasure hala thank you back commish. and that's it for this time thanks for
12:54 pm
being with us you can catch boom bust on direct t.v. channel three twenty one dish network channel two eighty or so dreaming twenty four seventh's on pluto t.v. that's the pre t.v.'s channel one thirty two or as always you can catch us that youtube dot com slash boom bust r t will catch you next time. you know world is a big part of the law and conspiracy it's time to wake up to dig deeper to hit the stories that mainstream media refuses to tell more than ever we need to be smarter we need to stop slamming the door on the back and shouting past each other it's time for critical thinking it's time to fight for the middle for the truth the time is now for watching closely watching the hawks.
