both of you out the popular. facebook will be axed in the fight against fake news and brands hundreds of pages and accounts. moscow opened its arms in a warm welcome to the two astronauts who escaped death on thursday an aborted rocket launch ended their journey in midair as they crash landed in kazakhstan. and a special operation by the crown prince us media report we had planned at the detention of the saudi journalist who disappeared in turkey ten days ago and that american intelligence was aware of the threat.
6:01 pm
this is r.t. international and we're broadcasting live from our moscow studios bringing you the latest top stories of the day and you have a tutor welcome to the program. briefing earlier this week revealed how the internet giant and others like facebook and twitter are increasingly policing which content stays online and which doesn't and it seems they're wasting little time facebook has shut down hundreds of accounts and pages accuses of being misleading down in hawk and reports fighting russian bots trolls tackling fake news the finding american democracy from foreign meddling social media join this for months what is facebook doing to prevent. us from interfering in us. to promise to protect. our. ecosystem have you heard of
6:02 pm
total information awareness you know i'm talking about. you know i do know ok would you be comfortable sharing with the same name of the hotel you stayed in last. week. no. this time though it's closer to home more than eight hundred pages banned by facebook and these are not some fringe accounts conspiracy. some of the pages have been around for years and have millions of followers. among those to face the acts of pages exposing alleged corruption states of
6:03 pm
violence and police brutality and facebook have explained the pages broke the rules engaging inspire and inauthentic behavior something we've heard before what makes this purge different to previous culls is that this is no secret kremlin bought operation as previously alleged by the media some of the biggest pages of all run by americans in america for americans accounts removed express the whole spectrum of views both conservative and liberal pro trump and the page owners are scathing facebook page with over two point one million followers has been unpublished along with eight hundred other pages and accounts the purge of old media is upon us i've been memory hold from facebook three hundred fifty thousand followers. there is a dangerous precedent been sat here where the big tech companies have appointed themselves as the gatekeepers are political thought in opinion this intervention
6:04 pm
comes ahead of crucial midterm elections in the united states it's a sign of social media giants waiting even further into the minefield of free speech versus fake news and could be seen by many as a sign of meddling in itself joining me now it's matt birk went from punk rock a libertarian pod cast that was also banned by facebook thanks for joining us on the program here mad now when did you realize your account had been suspended and did facebook provide an explanation as to why it was done. yeah it's sounded like they thought they were being run by fake profiles and we were doing spam but they didn't really say anything specific about it yesterday our page was just down and i was my account was actually deleted off facebook for a few hours along with the other admins of the page why do you think it was done. because we're less than a month away from an election zucker berg testified before congress they probably
6:05 pm
you know put some fire under is rear and maybe he felt that that he had to do to do something and you know it seemed like facebook went after everybody that they perceived as being right of the dial i mean you had almost two hundred thousand followers on facebook what implications this may have had for you and you know. well honestly like facebook has really been hitting our reach pretty hard to the point where like six months ago about i stopped producing content on our website because facebook wasn't giving us that much reach anyway it was getting to the point where you know it really wasn't worth it so it's an i honestly i like i like the attention that this whole thing is bringing to facebook screwing everybody over yeah you know it's so obvious that they hit everybody at once like that it's obviously messed up how do you what qwest face but we're still your account.
6:06 pm
i'm actually going to put in the appeal tonight it's i haven't heard of anybody having any luck with it so far but i'm going to try it but i'll try what i can why do you think no one's had any luck so far. they don't think highly of independent media my guess is you know it sounds to me like they're banning everybody because we did some terms of service and i would guess that their to their terms of service agreement is probably you know a million words long nobody has ever read it all the way through and i would think that if they wanted to they have terms in there where they could ban c.n.n. if they wanted to they could ban you guys if they want to do they could ban anybody and you know they're not going to have any problem banning you know just. like us in your opinion any instances in which you would support the suspension of
6:07 pm
a page on facebook. you know is it not respond. in some cases the deliberate spreading of information. you know honestly i can't think of anything because like with facebook the stuff that's in your feed is supposed to be the stuff that you like anyways and it's soon as a page post something that you don't like that you know takes you off you can just on like you can just on follow you know problem solved. and we likely do you think to see you start seeing a shift away from facebook towards platforms that don't police content hopefully hopefully you know i think with this happening a lot of people are really mad right now this is been. a huge outcry since since this has happened and hopefully the market will provide you know i've tried other outlets such as me we and mines dot com hopefully somebody like that will step up but isn't one of the problems that facebook facebook has pretty much
6:08 pm
monopolized the platform you know social media platforms are that is there any competition for them. yeah well i think that the problem is the competition to this point for what i've seen they don't seem to they haven't seemed to have done as great of a job and then the other thing is all the people who are already on facebook how do you get them over this platform and all of these platforms once you go there just kind of seems like they don't really have their stuff together and that indeed is the big question isn't it matt from a band of punk rock libertarians pod cast thank you very much matt coming on to the program. thank you so much in addition to the criticism over its policing of online content some of been questioning whether facebook is doing enough to protect a privacy the firm said back in late september that almost thirty million users had their data accessed by hackers and security breach the attackers already control
6:09 pm
a set of accounts which were connected to facebook friends they used an automated technique to move from account to account so they could steal the access tokens of those friends and for friends of those friends and so on totaling about four hundred thousand people. the hackers started with a group of accounts totaling four hundred thousand people but harvested the data of twenty nine million accounts they used an automated program to steal the digital keys that keep you logged into facebook so there's no need to enter your password fifteen million people have their names and contact details accessed and another fourteen million had to more severe data breaches including profile information and checking locations facebook said the f.b.i. asked them not to disclose who was behind the attack but political commentator lionel believes that ultimate responsibility lies with the tech giant itself. they're the main suspect their negligence the fact that they're paying attention
6:10 pm
far too much to what somebody is saying them to the internal security of their system zaher to blame they're the ones you know me to tell me that in the year almost twenty nine they have not figured out how to protect names yet this also screams out for the internet bill of rights all over the world you see that's what facebook should be paying attention to but instead all no no it's worried about shutting down. and pagers that nobody would have even known about. this. facebook previously when blocking accounts with alleged links to so-called russian agents and while a growing trend has seen bush fend off a number of accusations lately foreign minister sergei lavrov says moscow can't take them seriously when they're produced in the media and not diplomatic channels russia is constantly subjected to this from western countries and the media
6:11 pm
including about interference in elections and cyber attacks from the un to do big agency. for the prohibition of chemical weapons most recently the united states the united kingdom canada and the netherlands made similar dania security chanst and the oh so provided information to the media six months ago what's is this a planned effort to put pressure on russia and introduce new sanctions what do you think about the evidence presented. no translators know that but you will see it is very difficult for me to talk seriously about this topic of this because all the evidence is provided to us through the media lucille ball and with all due respect to the media in the journalistic profession we are serious people cannot consider the every accusation thrown at the russian federation of committing all manner of mortal sins so without engaging in those legal norms of six that were specifically created for such cases as that but our answer is very simple a lot of if you talk to us through the media then we will answer through the same
6:12 pm
media which we will answer specifically and correctly that means that we were asked absolutely practical questions so if our western colleagues seriously try to make as mad with this hysteria then they must not read history books if this is all just superficial and this attack of political rabies will just naturally go away when they speak out in full then we are always ready to engage by legal means and to have a serious professional known propaganda based conversation and you can see the poland a bit of russia's foreign minister on r.t. dot com next thursday don't go away it will be back in a few minutes. hillary clinton so civility can only return when the democrats are back in power former obama a.g. eric holder this point and new phrase when they go low we kick them without
6:13 pm
a doubt both statements can be dismissed as political banter as the midterms loom but it would seem no one can play much virtue in civility in this environment. it's been too many times when you know. cities hospitals. civilians. terrorists you know it. said billions it's been terrible really a more. than i was a few months back and the deal was a glimmer of hope in all of this.

welcome back program the two astronauts who narrowly escaped disaster on thursday when their rocket failed and now back in moscow safe and sound a booster rocket malfunction on the soyuz just minutes after blast off for the crew to abort the flight the two men on board the russian cosmonaut are lexi and american astronaut nick hague alexi of china is forty seven years old and holds the rank of reserve left colonel in the russian air force thursday's flight was supposed to have been his second journey into space his american colleague forty three year old nick is a colonel in the u.s. air force in his case it was to be in his maiden flight following the ordeal a dramatic rescue and. medical tests friends and family expressed relief that the two men were welcomed back to by karl. intended for

today's life near the two minute mark the first stage boosters begin to separate you could be something that goes wrong. all right and i cheated and there's no time to wait think that one hundred twenty one seconds and merge and see protocols engage or to magically the mission is compromised they're on their way milli seconds to get the crew a weight up with. the families of the crew and the heads of course morse and nasa watch on a stage action system jettisons the crew module away from the rocket boosters the for the tons of high explosive fuel detonate and we have lift gate tower for destroyers now jettison the ballistic trajectory they're on is rougher than anticipated the crew is shaken and battered but stay conscious with room for a little humor three hundred forty six.

three minutes in emergency systems function as intended they begin their descent back to earth within minutes as search and rescue operation is underway helicopters assume born powering towards the landing site while the next day makes families crazy and who is not realize that the and at first i watched the launch on t.v. but at a certain point i turned it off you can understand my feelings at the time there's no telling what medical condition corinne what we might cause others with whom professionalism who trained for years for this technicians when genea the safety overrides the rescuers. small rise in brick would. cost more nasa t.v. wasn't that miracle but it was the next best thing when it comes to space nothing

is left to chance there's contingencies for everything sealed safes protocols and provisions there's checks double checks triple checks and so is his track record the best in the world proves it's as safe as can be but that only gets susu far speace is after all the five or frontier. the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a saudi journalist in turkey has taken a twist as reports suggest riyadh was planning to detain him jamal khashoggi vanished ten days ago after entering the saudi consulate in istanbul and hasn't been seen since u.s. media says washington has come into possession of intelligence that a special operation was ordered by the saudi crown prince saudi arabia denies any involvement earlier i discussed this with my colleague jacqueline kruger. looks like the u.s. may have been aware of an imminent threat to the journalist well initially the
6:18 pm
trumpet ministration was rather slow in responding to the disappearance and this really may indicate why earlier in the the week reports surface that the u.s. had intercepts of saudi officials discussing a plot to lure him back to saudi arabia and detained him there now he's of course been living in the u.s. for about a year now at this point and he writes for the washington post he's a journalist and a lot of his articles are rather critical of the saudi government now it's unclear when the u.s. may have intercepted this intelligence and if they may have acted on it but it does raise quite a few questions not least of which being whether or not they had a responsibility to warn the journalist that his life might be in danger in some way shape or form now on wednesday a state department official did come out saying that they did not have any prior knowledge of the incident though again it's gone so. i can see the united states had no advanced knowledge of the show his disappearance. so while these reports are
6:19 pm
based on you know again unnamed sources more than one says to have confirmed them at this point and then one has to wonder whether or not this is a situation where the left hand just doesn't know what the right is doing then in the u.s. government because at the same time we have a group of almost two dozen senators who are up in arms about the situation if we find out that they were complicit or directed specifically to the election should like that it's appropriate this is serious and i think it's important in this situation that we we don't overreact or on the react we need to get the facts and i know that's a startling proposition for the united states congress that we should get the facts before we act if this did happen it is increasingly likely that something bad happened to this man at the hands of the saudi government has contempt for us. disrespectful to so there we have calls for an investigation the word sanctions has
6:20 pm
already been brought up and there's even been a bipartisan movement to stop arms sales to the kingdom which would be a huge blow to ties between the two powers of course but that's something that apparently trump is not willing to consider as of yet i don't like stopping massive amounts of money that's being poured into our country oh and i know they're talking about different kinds of sanctions but they're spending one hundred ten billion dollars on military equipment and things that create jobs like. others for this country so he did go on to say that u.s. investigators are looking into this situation but left it at that conflicting reaction there on the what kind of investigation should we expect jacki well on thursday a turkish presidential aide did come out saying that there is going to be an engine a joint investigation with turkey and saudi arabia and reports say that a delegation from riyadh has already landed in turkey but it's
6:21 pm
a. clear how well that's going to work given the harsh accusations that we've had coming from the turkish side it's been alleged that turkey actually has audio and visual recordings of the incident that prove their claims that shoghi was killed inside the consulate on october the second and certain articles quote people with quote unquote knowledge of the recordings recording saying that you can hear him being tortured and question interrogated and then killed but these recordings have yet to be released previously turkey had claimed that there was a fifteen man hate group that murdered and dismembered the journalist while he was in the consulate and then removed his body from the site now there has been no concrete evidence of that yet and that's something that doesn't need to be stressed this point and saudi arabia does flat out deny all the accusations saying that they are baseless their position remains that he left the consulate unharmed later that day the saudi arabia constantly barbarically violate human rights human rights of
6:22 pm
its citizens it has no legitimate freedom of press this week of however the united states keeps giving the saudi arabia billions in military aid and other foreign aid just as the united states turns a blind eye own violations of civil liberties including freedom of the press they constantly turn blind eyes to the violations of basic civil liberties and freedom of the press of its allies this is exactly what the us has been doing. the side of janice jamal khashoggi has been missing since the second type of let's take a look back over the moments leading up to his disappearance and the events that a father that.

dollars. china is building a two point one billion dollar a i industrial form but don't let the numbers overwhelm. the only numbers you need to remember is one one does not show you you know forward to miss the one and only two books. you need to let the audience you need to let people decide what is the relevant to them you don't need to filter he self censoring so john author self censored himself he believed he knew better he believed he knew with what the names were of these folks and that self-censorship which is such a step and this is completely wrong and this is why we have been sleepwalking into the next financial crisis how john authors ben a gonzo journalist i've been a property of new age journalist as he how do you how do you not self censor themselves as this next crisis unfolds people would be better prepared to deal with it but they won't be because the failure of fake journalist like an author.
