but this beautiful story ended with pollution and the bus station a lot of people have left here i don't know too many people here and slow down too much the last two jobs got laid off the american dream is changing that's not what it used to be. it's a tough reality to deal. with it was a problem i took i took when i last took stock of the. most part go to school. nineteen think we're dead and at least seventy injured in the shooting and bomb attack at a college in southern in the southern russian city of courage the attacker is named by the authorities is crossly cut off a student from the college who committed suicide after the atrocity and similarities now being drawn to the worst mass shooting at a high school in u.s. history in colombine when fifteen people were left dead and twenty four.

12:07 pm
in a putin is meeting with his egyptian counterpart in the city of sochi our correspondent igor donal for a pulse from the. mission the all of us journalists myself included gathered here in sochi for the meeting between the russian president vladimir putin and his egyptian counterpart but as we learned about the tragedy in courage and as more and more details emerge that completely overshadowed whatever was on the agenda today so expectedly one of lattimer putin finally showed up in front of the media he opened with a statement on kutch but you know what it is simple is that when i want to express my deepest condolences to the relatives of those who have been killed i hope that all the victims will recover as soon as possible we will do everything we can to help them we already know this is a crime and we are looking deeply into the motives and versions of what's happened all the results of the investigation will be made public dear friends in memory of
12:08 pm
all the victims let's honor them with a minute's silence. before vladimir putin showed up journalists kind of briefly had wondered whether or not vladimir putin will cut his program short and travel to courage himself i asked about this the press secretary of lattimer putin betrayed his cough and he said that well for now all such reports can all be confirmed still that i'm a putin at least right now is staying here in salt and of course we can all just speculate as to what the reasons could be behind this but my colleague also a journalist here in presidential poll submitted his version of why you have a lesson. the president will not go to courage even a quick visit by the president will disrupt curch crimea and all its services and people need to work there provide help conduct an investigation the president will
12:09 pm
go. so their work is not hindered indeed it could be just that vladimir putin letting all professionals on the ground in crimea focus on their work focus on what's important and that's saving lives and finding out what was behind the horrific massacre in curch. igor he died of there were let's talk to our season in a question of if she's back in the studio last time we spoke we were talking about a potential trend in such incidents that is true from the beginning of this year basically in russia alone with seen several high profile attacks on schools. well perhaps the one that really stands out is the attack and the russian city of
12:10 pm
perm which took place and generally the year now back then the attackers turned out to be two students of that school one former on the other was an eleventh grader now they attacked a teacher with a knife and injured several children who were present at the classroom during the sense of dance later the vast a geisha even said that both of them were inspired by the columbine high school massacre back in the united states sure there are a number of similarities people are saying to you between today's attack colombine acid that is correct the attack that we saw today and the russian city of bear is even striking similarities to the columbine massacre now in both cases both of them were of the same age as they were black and white close they put an explosive device in the can t. in in the u.s. they killed thirteen people and committed suicide and the library now in rush hour
12:11 pm
the incident seems to be a lone wolf attack but still he managed to kill even more he killed eleven people and he also committed suicide in the library after the attack so we of course we don't know yet the real motive behind this attack and clear but it is feared to be a copycat attack sure ok thanks material that was all to smoothen of course while we can speak to you to dr louis harrington he's a terrorism expert at the university in the u.k. the me tell you you're very welcome so you thanks louis for coming on we don't know if the exact details. this crime in sense of the motive and why this student apparently carried out this attack but generally speaking is there a pattern this repro file to the types of people that carry out attacks like this because we have seen them with a lot more frequency frequency year to have. firstly my thoughts and
12:12 pm
prayers with with the families of all those that have been impacted by this event it is it is becoming more increasingly common not just in europe not just in the united states but now in russia this idea of lone or sort of sort of lone actor. suicide attackers individuals that may or may not have a political objective but certainly carry out what we would consider a terrorist attack with the objective that they will die at the end of it now these types of individuals. there is a profile there is a common there seems to be a common. history of mental health problems. history of substance abuse. bullying. isolation. and the use of the internet as
12:13 pm
a means of self of becoming obsessed with previous incidents the other lady talked about copycat i wouldn't be surprised if police investigations uncover on this individual's computer that he would have obsessed over the columbine. attack. because it is it does seem to be that that's always the case whenever there's a lone actor suicide. that person has got a history of. mental health concerns and lucy disease easier to say in hindsight to pick out you know these points that you just made but are these telltale signs that we should be picking up soon or more quickly if students or teachers were able to do that could that help prevent such tragedies. well i think
12:14 pm
that the first step is to think in the u.k. why do we not see as much of this. in the in the u.k. or across europe because i think that our approach to removing the stigma associated with mental health is far more progress. i think that in the united states i think their approach is to medicate rather than treat the underlying conditions. so i think that it's it's their approach to dealing with young people who are today or you know young people are so isolated today because of social media the very tools that were designed to bring us closer of a torn society apart and individuals are spending more time online to spending more time alone and it doesn't matter how does my mother how many facebook friends youth you have the problem is that you spend most of your time on your own and i think that with this individual i think that was the case i suspect that he spent a lot of time alone planning this and you could see that he'd constructed pipe
12:15 pm
bombs and that kind of stuff you know is available on you tube you could find out how to build pipe bombs on you tube all of this information is available for those who are looking for it. i'm sure there are a lot of students. do you go through difficult times that have problems at school they have problems with a teacher they have problems their girlfriends but they don't take this step is there any one particular trigger that pushes people this far particularly or is it just too difficult to determine. and being able to predict human behavior is phenomenally difficult but we can certainly see individuals that are having problems i think with for a fatherly figure i think that the absence of a fatherly figure makes that individual more likely. to if they are subjected to the same condition the bullying the problems with mental health that the me it
12:16 pm
may lead to an act of extreme violence like this i mean it takes a great deal of hate one must spend a lot of time one must have a great deal of resentment to walk into a school carrying weapons carrying blogs knowing that you're killing your classmates that's not something that everybody would do of course. it's something that takes a woman to have a great deal of hate to be able to do that to look at somebody in that many number of people and shoot them. so i think we need to start addressing the root problems of the the changes in the way that our children. mental health problems are dealt with and the we have to recognize the impact of social media. you know in my lectures when i see my shoots there they're constantly attached to the phones they're always on their laptops that you can see two kids opposite each other on their phones no communication i think that the damage to this or mental health is
12:17 pm
phenomenal and it's interesting how it's in the last twenty years that we've started to see an increase in school shooters roughly rather the same time that the smartphone started coming out the internet started coming out you know the sort of post two thousand and one era it's an interesting that seems to be correlation between that and is that and i know you mentioned issues of perhaps students feeling more isolated and become ironically more antisocial when they use social media because they don't necessarily talk to one another face to face but is their exposure to violence violent films violent clips violent means that you see on the internet violent video games does that have a big impact because we're always told oh don't be so silly for mentioning that you know people are normal they know well not to overstep the mark but do you feel it has an impact. historically there was a film called clockwork orange and it was banned it was believed that it would have this terrible impact on society it's not the material i don't think it is the
12:18 pm
manner in which it is consumed if everyone if you go with your friends to watch a clockwork orange at the cinema that's one thing. individuals isolated in their bedrooms alone for hours and hours and obsessing watching one piece of violence almost as if it's an addiction to their violent content. you know that's a whole different world. playing a video games if you play a video game for ten hours long and you're the type of individual who's struggling with mental health who's been bullied at school it's a it's the perfect storm these are the the the violence the video games they play a part but only when other factors are also present when you've got the bullying when you've got the social isolation when you've got an individual like this person you have seen the picture of him you know. i think he's trying to emulate the columbine attackers by his the way he was dressed but again this is all coming down
12:19 pm
to this this this new era i think will see an escalation more than anything if we do not put some kind of. procedures in place that allows parents this starts with parents take your children and spend time with them don't let you don't let the i pad be the babysitter. you know don't let facebook be the wants to raising your kids do it yourself can schools be more proactive in this i mean they've already got it already got a lot on their plate anyway trying to teach thousands of children in the classrooms but i mean. should this be part of the curriculum just to make sure that their students do have decent social lives. i mean i have delivered a seminar so i you know i lecture i do have a seminars. in my subject and what i deliberately do in the seminars i've banned the use of laptops i too know laptops no phones you know i get students working in
12:20 pm
groups. i get them using you know real paper again you'd be surprised. i get musing paper i get them using working groups like it felt ups i get the working as a team again and so yes schools can i think the pressure has been on schools to be innovative to use technology as a means of teaching what. was wrong with teaching methods for hundreds of years they worked just fine i think get technology out of the classroom to get the school is the first place where we could actually take technology and social media is the place we can actually take take it out of that environment and let's go back to the way that we used to teach the real you know the way that we should work together the best teaching is done in groups it's done through all discussions are push for a return to old style methods take the i pads out of the classroom do you think it would be damaging even psychologically to children if they saw. security guards if
12:21 pm
they saw metal detectors if they saw increase security for their own safety at school. the security of the securitisation of the school if you look at america with metal detectors. even in the u.k. you know historically schools were open you could the school gates were open if you go around schools to some of the schools look like a fortress. they look as if you know that maybe the students i can't say how they think but if i go to school and see this fortress place we're not constructing this sense of a prison and the sooner i can get out of that the better. policing classrooms thankfully the u.k. you know we don't allow weapons but if weapons are allowed in society that society has responsibility of the school has a responsibility but thankfully we don't have that in the u.k.
12:22 pm
in russia given this incident the they'll have to start following doing what the americans do metal detectors armed guards and that's quite i don't know what impact certainly if you militarize an environment you will effect especially at a young age if you go into school. and your school looks like a military academy you are going to be normalized to the presence of weapons and presence of soldiers and it would make sense especially in age where you're like a sponge. lewis libby going to have to leave it there when you get to two people who think you told my location and sense there that was dr lewis harrington a terrorism expert that left for university thank you. thank you very much. let's just take you through them what has happened today nineteen people have been confirmed killed in around seventy injured in a gun and bomb attack on a college in crimea first an explosion rocked the college show. windows homemade
12:23 pm
explosive device is said to have been placed in the canteen shooting then started afterwards on the second floor the main suspect was a student we are told at the college and he has been named as to his flat is roughly a cause of he was aged between eighteen and twenty two he said to have turned his gun on himself authorities say he was not known to police before the incident and is not believed to show aggressive tendencies in the past where russia is invested if committee has reclassified the incident from a terror attack to murder three days of mourning been declared in the region security measures of all to be ramped up on the peninsula and their own schools colleges and universities across russia. we've got video to you from the scene captured which captured the attack under way. the reversible i. did talk with cyclone those troops talk about it.
12:24 pm
but right that this was. all. i did was. look for you there capturing the moments of the attack we also heard from a college student who witnessed the shooting and described what she saw. more reasonable not to go up until it is you know those that have all the rallies closed and you're going to supposedly the whole year not see this through yet
12:25 pm
bizarrely vigil but the leap was the party would be closed. but the welcome. my love was the result i know paula if you are not but if you thought. you want to see your little good year will you please really. security analyst and former u.k. army officer charles she bridge police that such atrocities are often copycat attacks. these incidents particularly perhaps with young people or perhaps people. mentally disturbed in some way and i'm not saying that young people are mentally disturbed but people perhaps are vulnerable and perhaps more impressionable there's no doubt whatsoever that such people are susceptible to some degree c. carrying out or being inspired by previous instance to copycat attacks or copycat
12:26 pm
incidents we've seen that for example in the terrorism fear or i speak as a former counterterrorism officer where when attack and attack takes place for example we saw in london just a year ago where one attack takes place and it seems to inspire others to then carry out an attack either on the spur of the moment or something they've been thinking about for some time perhaps people have got a grudge of some sort as maybe in this current case and then it triggers them to actually think well actually i'm going to carry that out to a particular of course when inevitably and this isn't a criticism of the media but inevitably such incidents attract a wide and very longstanding degree of a publicist which again appears to some people of course that if they're going to go out they want to go out in a blaze of glory but again we need to know the more detail incidents details of this incident before we can come to any conclusions but undoubtedly one of the tactics place like this there is a danger. that it can be repeated in the weeks and months ahead and it may of
12:27 pm
course be that this person also was inspired by similar attack either in russia or perhaps more likely because it gets more publicity somewhere like the states particularly going all way back to columbine. and then of our major breaking news story today nineteen students killed at a technical college in sudden russia in the city of a lone shooter a student believed to be the culprit he then committed suicide we'll have more details on the headlines today in half an. that and.

you just said embassy but it's force. what politicians do. they put themselves on the line they get accepted or rejected . so when you want to be president. or some want to. have to go right to the press that's what the four three in the morning can't be good. i'm interested always in the waters in the. west soon. after repeated denials the saudis are now expected to change their story on the fate of jamal khashoggi was he the victim of abduction and torture that went too far donald trump house expressed concern but little more some are saying riyadh to

a stinker those were my father's wise words to me when i was just a wee little tyro on the importance of paying attention in school and getting a good education parents and elders often tell us that we can achieve anything in this life as long as we get a good education and while most of the time that's true what pap what what happens when it's the child who wants to be the thinker but the educational system around that child is the stinker what happens when a child is born in the wrong social economic background and is forced into a public school system underfunded and robbed blind what do we do then that is one of the many important questions being posed in a recent report by the alliance to reclaim our schools reports titled confronting the education debt and report found that between two thousand and five and twenty.
