as an unemployment rate of zero percent is like the gold rush is very very similar to. this beautiful story and with pollution and the bus station a lot of people have left here i don't know too many people here and just slow down too much they lost their jobs got laid off the american dream is changing that's not what it used to be. it's a tough reality to deal with. the leaders of turkey russia germany and france get together to move the syrian peace process forward some issues that will lead the discussion. also this hour multiple deaths are confirmed by police in a shooting at a synagogue in the u.s. state of pennsylvania the gunman has been detained. and the
3:01 pm
european court of human rights throws out an appeal which sorting used the freedom of speech to defame the prophet muhammad we put the issue here up for debate. we should have free speech and he goes as far as saying in some instances that. would become of a low people to use and then be used to become racist demonize a group called. thanks for joining us r.t. international just gone now ten pm now here in moscow i'm daniel hawkins welcome to the program. now it's been a significant day for syria last four key players with differing views russia turkey germany and france have met in his thumble for the first time in an attempt to move along a peace settlement for the conflict. sides
3:02 pm
discussed plenty of issues including constitutional reform and elections as well as humanitarian aid to the was hit regions the own growing refugee crisis and the last remaining jihadi hot spots in the country that's provence. is in istanbul for us he joins me live now with the latest updates of expectation obviously ahead of the some went ahead of the press conference has there been any movement forward atoll has it the live of what people hoped it would. be. that high again we'll all be glad to go through the main points that were made by emmanuel back ron angle very dawn and a lot of our first of all even though we are in november the foreign leaders hope that a committee to draft this syrian to call its two should well be or before the end
3:03 pm
of this year here's another one of the heads of state not to discuss the personal fate of syria's president bashar al assad and now besides this nobody is questioning the right of the syrian people to decide who's going to be in charge of the country next plus whatever it wants to start firing guns it's syria is it problem which were made to area it could explode any time must forget about it and this is the part where things really get tricky damascus once the province under its control and obviously it is allied with russia however currently this place remains the last stronghold of the syrian opposition which is backed by turkey and pretty much the rest of the western world obviously that includes france and germany as well and it is still a place. where the former news for terrorists and other affiliated groups are still
3:04 pm
active now all the people in the choir today are saying that terrorists must be out of there however when it comes to who is likely to be the side behind the possible escalation of violence and this is where russia and fred not only they don't see eye to eye this is where they're making some aggressive warnings in the first one came from the russian president vladimir putin. i should. be greeks picked turkey to shortly complete his withdrawal of opposition forces heavy weaponry and military units from the demilitarized zone we see that on turkish partners are doing their best to achieve that however if radical militants oppose this if they make provocations from inside the it live zone but russia will reserve the right to help the syrian government eliminate these threats and. then just
3:05 pm
a couple of minutes emmanuel macron who was sitting pretty much one metre away from a lot of our approach and punched back with this. military offensive by the syrian regime and its backers because we would have an acceptable security and humanitarian consequences to our security interests as well as those of turkey and europe are at stake however for now russia and friends were able to sign the so-called memorandum of understanding which is also supported by paris and berlin and this memorandum is this magic element that is keeping the hope alive for the removal of terrorists and also we maintain the continued existence sorry of the demilitarized zone and this is the kind of zone which is patrolled by. the military police of russia and turkey
3:06 pm
without terrorists and without heavy weaponry i just want to point out that all four leaders said that they were looking forward to another summit like this to happen in the near future and also they are open for some of the other international players to be involved in these kind of talks. there with the latest updates from that summit in istanbul thanks for that. now to discuss this a bit further i'm joined live by jamal wakim a professor of international relations at lebanese university in beirut thanks for joining us great to have you on the program today obviously some steps forward some unity among those leaders looking at the body language though and some of the other things said also quite a bit of tension and differences wasn't now what do you make of the outcome of this summit. well i believe that the summit is a step forward towards the peaceful settlement of the syrian crisis however it's
3:07 pm
still short of getting into fruitful results because i don't believe that any deal could or any summit could achieve positive results without the participation of the united states of america being the one of the major players in the world if not the primary power in the world so that's why i don't believe that this summit could lead to an end the political and of the syrian crisis of course the objectives and the reasons of the four powers are different for. russia. of course the wars behind the deed with a turkey to demilitarize. the region or part of the bridge and as part of a peaceful settlement and as part of the escalating the situation. there however
3:08 pm
with the latest stumbling of the saudis based on the shock of the crisis and of course it backfired on donald trump that with the american president there were fears by western european countries mainly france that this situation could be used by russia by syria and by their allies to diffuse the situation through a military operation and it did and this is why they participated in this summit and this explains the. the declaration by micro into italy in retaliation to the collaboration by president vladimir putin. threatening military intervention in case the armed groups stationed in adelaide escalate the situation so. i believe that this is the real reason however it's still sort of. an improvement on the political level however it's still short of
3:09 pm
achieving fruitful results and that escalation from the military point of view remains a risk doesn't it and also looking back over the last few years regime change has been a term very much used by the western powers that's been a key stumbling block often in negotiations now we see all four leaders saying they're committed to the sovereignty to the territorial integrity of syria does that mean regime change is now off the table. well i believe so because the reality on the ground. is very evident there is no regime change the regime in syria was able to resist all attempts to topple it and all attempts to destroy syria as a country but at the same time that our hopes by western countries to lead the syrian regime into accepting constitutional changes and by claiming these
3:10 pm
constitutional amendments the western powers hope to get a share of influence in syria after the crisis which is something that the the syrian regime is adamant to so i don't believe that the. syrian regime or the president bashar assad would accept any compromise specially that it feels it has achieved a major victory over its opponents it was able to resist all attempts to topple the regime to destroy syria and syria remains a key regional player in spite of the weakness that it endured you would move the crisis so. i believe that we will need to wait for more time to have to see an end of the syrian crisis of course there will be. moments all for escalation however it seems that the western coalition led by the
3:11 pm
united states have been. witnessing a lot of. it's a failure does and the last crisis the federal budget crisis have hardly. saudi arabia and donald trump the american president i just want to expand a bit on the constitutional committee of syria because that again has been held up by all four leaders are something that could be achieved by the end of the year sunday that's something i'm going to mark was saying that could be done do you think that really does hold the key to a political solution how key is that formation of that committee to resolving the syrian conflict. well the amendments. that were required by western powers immediate extension of the lebanese formula to syria the way it was. extended to iraq
3:12 pm
after the american invasion of this country in two thousand and three which is to establish a sort of confession. decentralized system where subgroups could play a major role and this is something that the. that syria would never accept because it would never accept a situation where it could become. reflection of regional and international balance of power the way lebanon is the way iraq is and the and this moment so the end of the western powers they are trying to. acquire. through peaceful means what they failed to get through military means which is to decentralize authority in syria to promote subgroups in order to have
3:13 pm
a certain fad or confidence system based on ethnic and confessional bases which would reflect also alliances of these subgroups with regional powers and this would engender of course the west or western powers acquiring. partial influence in this country of course this is something that the syrian leadership would never accept ok jamal wakim professor of international relations at the lebanese university in beirut thanks for your insight today into what's been a key moment and i was to go shane's on syria. over to the u.s. now where there's been a shooting at a synagogue in pittsburgh in the state of pennsylvania the gunman has been identified as forty six year old robert power he is in custody police confirm there have been multiple fatalities with four police officers also wounded and witnesses describe the shooter walking into the synagogue during
3:14 pm
a morning service and opening fire the suspect in the shooting is in custody we have multiple casualties inside the synagogue we have three are for says who have been shot. and we have no more information because we are still clearing the building and trying to figure out. if the situation is safe if there are any more threats and side the building or the have been differing unconfirmed reports over the number of dead with claims of up to seven people killed the officers were hit as they arrived on scene your attack took place in what is traditionally the busiest day of the week for such places of worship the tree of life a synagogue was founded more than one hundred fifty years ago and merged with another pittsburgh congregation in twenty ten it holds a number of events in the community including religious ceremonies and book clubs. and speaking to the media the president of the u.s. said crime should be punished at the highest level with the death penalty. one thing we did. was.
3:15 pm
they should wake. everybody. down. and i think. it. made. them feel good if i didn't. have. the head of the synagogue involved has also been speaking to the media at the scene of the attack started i was getting dressed to go up to services a little before ten o'clock and one of the people the vice president that i work with on facility management he had called me from lancaster and he said there's a report that there's an active shooter how he works for the city so he has special communications with emergency services and he said get up there and check it out i tried heading up shady avenue to the building and it was entirely blocked off.
3:16 pm
human and laborites slowdown kovalchuk was at the scene for us with the latest. there's people gathered all around here. a lot of people in mourning a lot of parishioners with their heads in their hands people just trying to figure out what has happened here you know it's a very somber situation this is a bedroom community here in pittsburgh and this we don't see these things happen very often there's a number of synagogues here in squirrel hill this is a very strong jewish community here it's still in lockdown it's very hard to get in and out of school hills this point and i've never seen this many police in one place in pittsburgh i mean it's really a very tense situation and very set people are very sad. and this is the latest mass shooting at a religious site in the u.s. in recent years to someone attacks claimed the lives of thirty five people.
3:17 pm
as i go in the u.k. i have a cool for one of its leading of us cities to remove a walled wall one memorial because it only features what man will delve into that control say the top of this short break. i've been saying the numbers mean something they matter the u.s.

3:19 pm
welcome back to r.t. international the european court of human rights has ruled defaming the prophet muhammad falls outside the limits of acceptable free speech judges rejected an appeal from an austrian woman who'd been seeking to overturn a conviction for insulting islam the domestic courts comprehensively assess the wider context of the applicant statements and carefully balanced her right to freedom of expression with the right of others to have their religious feelings protected and serve the legitimate aim of preserving religious peace in austria and the woman identified only as e s held to seminars back in two thousand and nine she called them basic information on islam she reportedly used the classes to count tris the prophet as a paedophile for marrying a six year old that led to a conviction in two thousand and eleven for defaming religious doctrines and a fine of nearly five hundred euros her appeal on the grounds of free speech had earlier also been rejected by the austrian courts we put the issue up for debate.
3:20 pm
this is about faith of course muslims don't like that their prophet muhammad is being criticized but it should be in this instance you know we should have free speech i'm sorry as a muslim who will come to any sort of dialogue or discussion with any critic of islam as long as it is of all of us sit down and be taught but if somebody actually turns around the abuse and becomes abusive then that's a different kettle of fish it's a cultural discussions it happens in our societies so islam must be ready also to be tackled to be questioned about certain things that are not acceptable that are also legislations now against islamophobia why one people should be free to be islamophobia as some people are anti christian for anti-christian for example so it should be free we should have free speech and it goes as far as saying in some
3:21 pm
instances that perfect mohammad was very wrong you know we cannot allow people to use the concept of freedom of speech which actually i think is a very important. thing to have but we cannot allow people to use and abuse that to become racist demonize a group of people and then make him into others and there's not really this value and then we promote fascism come on come on anti semitism is racism clearly but islamophobia is against a religion and i can moderate it sorry not sort of in it that is no no you didn't look you are you're you're really you're really hiding behind the fact of the mother is i don't want fascism to come back in the streets of europe there is no violence on the part of europeans to avoid stewart's muslims they are welcome in europe but they must remain end of private sphere look muslims will come in europe
3:22 pm
that is there. a racist thing to say you know these are people who are part and parcel of what the europeans say look what you mean no you're you're you're just saying will come of course or will come they're all stricken people who are austrian and they've been austrian since two thousand of the year nineteen of that are so excited so naslund already so what they want to say that they don't need you to work on them they belong to austria this is a language of exclusion this language of other than this is exactly what i'm talking about the reality is that we can sort of have sort of one set of rules and laws for one community another one for all the. british university has found itself at the center of a storm off or a student union president called for the removal of one hundred year old memorial honoring soldiers who fought in the first world war auntie's and as the situation cannot mix into the story. here at the university of southampton
3:23 pm
a student union president has caused a lot of outrage after she demanded a world war one memorial new movie scrapped the reason it features only white men mark my words we had taken downs a mural white man in a unit senator room even if i have to paint or it myself the problem is it's not just a random white man on the mural the image was painted in one thousand sixteen and is known to students who fought and died in the first world war without being able to complete their degrees so this remark to get rid of that mural drew a lot of criticism including from a descendant of the artist the sentiment behind the painting is wonderful it's awful to see women like this browsing off on twitter about something is idiotic is that this means that real issues then don't get discussed. i hope she will reflect on what she has said and realize it has been conducted in poor taste those who know the history of our island are fully aware of and appreciate the involvement of black and asian soldiers against tyranny. the university told us this
3:24 pm
the comments made by the students union president regarding the rothstein muro are not shared by the university of southampton we have very proud to display the miro which serves as a memorial to all members of british universities who served in the great war this is far from the first time you can universities have been rocked with similar scandals or what i. i i. despite an apology from the woman at the center of the controversy a petition to remove her from the post of student union president has been quickly gathering supporters let's find out exactly what students at the university make of it all and we disagree with. all of our opinions there are people who are very

enraged because he's like you're touching because you're something i narrated you're writing if you want and you are writing a story you're literally blaming these people died for your country and they couldn't get the degree you have the pleasure to be together they couldn't something real real and that's real i think history is something we kind of have to accept it rewriting it's not the right way that's denying i history i can accept that it's happened and maybe it was a right ever but it's not you can only write for. so many different people for just one of many so. if you like. to play with white men it is for. the point of rhyme well i do hope that more people. on campus we'll be discussing it in greater depth. about ten thirty here in moscow that's it from the team and myself for this hour join us again at eleven pm for the latest global news updates .

liquidated bankruptcy can only restructure debt it cannot revive mutilated brands and bring back malt customers this follows the script of the brick and mortar meltdown of retailers that were bought by wall street and subsequently subjected to asset stripping and cost cutting which ruined what little was left of their brands mired down in survival mode those retailers failed to build a vibrant online presence and fulfillment infrastructure as sales withered and losses ravaged the company debts became unmanageable but the bankruptcy of sears holdings as you have so much richer and the restructuring in bankruptcy has a zero chance of succeeding for you have a response to that i want to show you this chart this is the store count which is on track to zero from two thousand and eleven down down down when eddie lampert there it is all sears kmart merger he was worth three to four billion dollars.
3:30 pm
jeff bezos at the time was worth approximately a billion dollars and i think he made the comment that they couldn't possibly compete of course nowadays is worth one hundred fifty two hundred sixty billion dollars and a lamp or its network has dropped below a billion dollars. he was loud and in the financial press as the new warren buffett and i remember that i made the comment at the time that this was not going to be the case because warren buffett's empire is based on berkshire hathaway an insurance company which is the nuts way to make a lot of money if you. just stay honest which is almost impossible in the insurance or banking industry ninety nine percent are dishonest but warren buffett has just managed to stick to the knitting over there berkshire hathaway just crank out lots of money and then he uses those that cash to buy huge stakes in companies like coca-cola and apple computer etc and that's how he built his empire any lamp or try to base his empire on a junk retailer.
