completely. terrible senator six. years she said he's just. victims. compensation. for the suffering. not only want the money i want the revenge. we want to welcome our worldwide audience here on r t america it is ten pm on the east coast of the united states and we are now getting ready to embark on what is going to be very quite possibly a historic night for the united states of america the midterm elections but certainly no usual midterm elections i'm joined by my colleague scott i know hughes
10:01 pm
is going to be helping to take us through this night this very important night we're already starting to see some trends scotty and i think as expected the republicans were hoping to be able to hold on to the senate we also expected that the democrats were going to try and wrestle away house from the republicans and those are the trends that we're seeing as we're moving forward tonight although we are not ready at this point to make any projections or make any confirmations we're also going to be joined tonight by our colleague in los angeles larry king who's joining us to give us his perspective as well on how things are going tonight you know scottie larry it's starting to look like that which we expected on this night will come true at least for the republicans who seem to be having a pretty good showing and that is for them it's really important to nail down and keep the senate larry it's looking like that's going to happen your reaction. and it's also love there like the. democrats can take the house as i understand it
10:02 pm
there's a ninety percent chance that they will take the house so we're going to have that holds a split government which at this point in this country might even be healthy. the last two years have been the turbulent to say the least and maybe with the democrats controlling the house that will mean of course the new speaker new chairman's of committees could change things quite a bit the house is key to a lot of legislation legislation starts in the house so this could this is an important election night live through a lot of them but i've never been through one like this thing larry it is very important but you know somebody very important is going to wake up tomorrow morning and his world's going to change and that's president donald trump you're a very good friend the you talk to him often throughout the years how does trump react to no longer first of all does the our birthday go in the fact that he lost
10:03 pm
the house republicans lost the house they're going to quickly tried to blame that on him or what's going to happen how they're going to handle this now not being you know adding to deal with democrats and really have to face them i know donald for forty years the one thing the state you made stacey and you make very few in your life don't trump does not have a bruised ego. go to mainz constant in other words what he will say is a couple of things democrats stole as in the house i you notice that we get the senate because most of my time was devoted to the senate when i went around to states and peddles rallies that was for senate candidates mostly. so to them you the republicans blew it in the house i won the senate that's he will take credit for what ever what it doesn't matter what happens if you don't last the senate he would have blamed the world but it's never downfall donal's
10:04 pm
a delightful guy know him so many years i knew him as a character i knew what he wanted to get his name in the new york post but i never saw him as and i was talking to him through the whole campaign and i just never saw him as president and so what we have is accomplished some things but we have a we have a country in a lot of trouble ok. it is a change that i but i'm still i as my idea of the late dear friend the late edward bennett williams once when he looks at politics if he was an optimist or pessimist and he said of course i'm a pessimist i'm smart. so larry you have been throughout history you've interviewed dignitaries for decades that have been involved in politics is there any time right now what does this remind you the most of where you will see a house and a senate that will be split and present and a president that could be at odds with both of them as we've seen him criticize it
10:05 pm
and it often is there any time in history that reminds you of where we stand today though scotty the close is it would come. would be nineteen nine b. for clinton's. first term in office and his first midterm election i was with him in seattle on the saturday night before that tuesday and he was still optimistic but he lost he had a very tough time and that was the rise of newt gingrich. and the contract with america and that changed a lot of things in american one thousand nine hundred four people thought clinton was through they were calling him irrelevant but he came back and won in ninety six the truth about politics as. the great writer once said nobody knows anything like we we all guess we make up prisms is
10:06 pm
we have no idea look at our lays in texas yeah i was just going to say in fact larry you know two of the most interesting things that are taking place tonight are both on what you might call coastal states and that is both florida and texas and in florida you have the polls all saying that it was going to look really good for bill nelson and that might be the demise of rick scott well right now the way those numbers are coming in it's looking like rick scott is going to save or at least save this election for himself he's the governor now he's going to be moving on the side of see if he holds on but it's a lot tighter than the poll said moving over to texas same thing most people were saying bedo roark is actually a full even stay in this race he said no i'm not getting out i want to stay in there and right now better all roark is still very much in this race larry. where a certain rick is you know florida very well as i do. depends on that scott race. where the vote still coming is broward county let me let me tell you what we know
10:07 pm
right now broward county still has about seventy to eighty thousand votes outstanding if those votes come in as they historically do they'll be forty thousand of them or so will be for the democrats however and i say this with the cabbie out there there is still a west coast area voting district that might lean more toward scott so when this is all said and done i think we might be looking at a canvas situation tomorrow i don't think this is going to be called tonight but i do think that it's looking better for scott than it is right now for for nelson the diamond order or about the governor. the governor's race looks does not look good for dylan right now as a matter of fact if you look at the numbers he's much more behind the nelson is it would be almost impossible for him to catch up i think there's a possibility larry that we might be looking at a call for for the for the for the democrat party for the republican in this case
10:08 pm
who by the way is pro term and well and that's a thing you got a rise for it could be two separate states as you well know larry and right both you do have you know miami but i know the panhandle the panhandle is normally outside of tallahassee very conservative but they definitely suffered a lot of damage a few weeks ago with the hurricane that came in a lot of people today had a hard time voting we still don't have precincts people don't know where to go so as they can tell downtown in just a minute i'm being told now that the vote in florida has actually tightened up guys we're being told that apparently gillum is now only down by one percentage point sorry well like i said it's going to be interesting to see if they continue to collect those votes but that brings us to a moment right now about what recent events and headlines larry what affected those have do you think on voter turnout as we have larger turnout today than we've had in any other midterm and what kind of effect do you think that had on just the headlines that you report on your show every day on some of these races well trump . is no doubt trump prompted all this is who's an election for or against strong.
10:09 pm
he couldn't roll the media over those two years it's been his ball game it's trump america is one his one channel and fox news we call it trump news. it's it's almost at a point there's never been anything like this in history ever so it's all been true it's good from trump controls the news bad or good. for trump tonight i would say it's if this holds the house will prove him in trouble but is it that when he whines larry you know larry you know travis it thout what it was president trump wants though he wants to have this excitement he wants to have headlines when a lot of these headlines when there is anything talk about seems like he gives them he had these things happen so he did this kind of play into the hands of what he is ultimately would be because if we're not talking about him he's going to give us some reason to talk about him you might be right scottie in other words which
10:10 pm
you're saying is no matter what happens trump likes it. you know and that name was in the paper here with him look something to make it good for him you might have a point there i there's never been that we've never seen anything like this in politics ever now that i'm trying to picture. fifty years from today they put up till portraits of american presidents right and i'm trying to see washington jefferson. rose. do you think that it will be gold plated we know that larry we know we covered and go. that's right and they wins a second term and he's going to change the name that a white house. or the gold plated white house. waited white house well i'll tell
10:11 pm
you what larry hang in there my friend we're going to try and get a few more numbers now you know we're going to do we're going to try and break down for you tonight as best we can in fact we've we've got a map that we've put together scottie that i think allows us to get a better perspective on what's going on a member the big story tonight is right the big story tonight sara is that the republicans need to hold on to as best they can the senate and the democrats are going to try and wrestle the house away oh they're already trying to show show us what how that appears at this point we're ok so i'm starting with the house there have been some very very close calls the house has had a few flips already called in kentucky six district huge battleground republicans held on to that district florida twenty five and they last we saw a huge flip right there virginia is tenth district right outside washington d.c. also flipped to democrat and these two districts were largely expected to flip
10:12 pm
florida's twenty six district also a big flip from republican to democrat and it looks like these battlegrounds are being taken over by the democrats we're seeing some very tough races in the country right now by the way that twenty seven that you see right there interestingly enough donna shalala name from the past she was part of the clinton administration health and human services secretary she's taken on a well known republican in south florida we the republicans put a lot of money behind that race and that's a loss for them that's a big big losses right here but also the senate. like you said twenty three democrats needed twenty three next gains which meant that republicans can only afford to lose twenty two so we'll see what happens here but so far indiana this state was a big win for the g.o.p. republican mike brown was a big flip he knocked off democrat joe donnelly right here also another what looks to what could be a huge flip is north dakota republican congressman kevin kramer is up by twenty points right now against democrat senator heidi heitkamp virginia also called for
10:13 pm
democrat tim kaine who is expected to win big loss for republican corey stewart but tennessee republican congresswoman marsha blackburn beat former governor phil bredesen new jersey democrat bob menendez and bob you can also called for a barbecue going and west virginia democrat joe manchin took down republican patrick morrisey to two bigger two bigger senate senate races are florida and missouri which are still being called that missouri democrat claire mccaskill up against republican josh holley and florida current republican governor rick scott is hoping for a big win against democrat big bill nelson but this is still really too close to call for florida yet thank you sir it's a good picture he does i'll tell you what you know as we look at this and do actually it is looking like the democrats expected what many were calling a blue wave much like your address but it doesn't look like at least
10:14 pm
a massive blue wave at this time if the democrats win they may win the house but they're not going to do it in gargantuan form by any stretch of the imagination ashley florida tell us what's going on there brooke governors and senators so for both to give you know tauriel raise and the senate race they're both really tight i'm going to read you some numbers when it comes to the senate race rick scott he's a leading nifty point four percent bill nelson is shortly behind him at forty nine point six percent i want to go over there was a few. point four to forty nine point six that's less than a percentage point ok for sure so very tight there i want to read you their issues when it came to campaigning bill he was focusing on educating the youth protecting florida's environment creating jobs for florida's future and guaranteeing access to health care when it came to rick he wanted to focus on disaster preparedness education and vironment immigration and health care however experts say the
10:15 pm
response to hurricane michel and its impact on the majority of republican panhandle it could hurt scott's chances of winning because of the recovery and what happened but right now he is surprised only everybody else listen most of the polls about him i saw a poll just this morning that had him down seven i think was a st petersburg tampa poll out of down by seven and he's right now winning yes he is he's leading this but he's received a lot of criticism especially when it came to the talks and the toxic algae blooms which have hurt the state's economy a lot of people are dumping him red tie rick they're saying in florida the governor is supposed to oversee the state's water management and he wasn't so this could hurt him now i want to move on to the gubernatorial ballot mr dillon. now ron dissent is a leading by forty nine point nine percent and then andrew gillum is behind him at forty eight point nine percent and you know what gillum is
10:16 pm
a very impressive candidate but it seems like if you really are going to look at this and then we don't have the numbers at this point but at some point we're going to have to look down at the demographic breakdown did the african-american vote turnout as was promised or did they not to be able to give gillum the victory that a lot of people were expecting he was up in the polls to he was you know it's looking right now what's he down one percent he's down about one percent and if he wins he'd become the state's first democratic governor and two decades so that would be a major. all right rachel we're going to be coming back to you and dan as well we know that you all are son reece's thank you ashley for that sara thank you to you as well we're going to be checking in with all of you meanwhile let's do this let's go over to scotty i need a government or a for you has to have been watching this pale lot of familiar faces that you have seen here on our team erica we had to bring him back and tonight for this historical night i want to bring in rick ungar senior political contributor at forbes and also the host of the pod a complex and that ryan c.e.o.
10:17 pm
of the american majority to give us the three sixty view of tonight how both of you you know it's interesting to see your faces i saw you for eight hours ago both of you had smiles on your face a little bit of a has attended a smile tonight and i know if somebody wants to quote it's a little early we'll save that for another day but i want to start off obviously with you ned because tonight the republicans look like they're going to lose the house why are the republicans going to lose the house why does it come down to. so i think part of first of all it's just a historic story called reset i mean it's typical for a president to lose twenty four twenty eight seats on average in the first midterm so i mean part of it's just history scottie where there's a reset and the party out of power in the white house takes a back seat in the house so i think that's part of i think what's going to be really interesting a couple thoughts on this first of all it's not going to be a massive tsunami i think it'll be a very slim majority obviously fox and other stations are calling the democrats they are but i think will be
10:18 pm
a very slim majority and the big question i have scott is this when democrats if they do take the house come into power what are they going to do are they going to actually legislate or is this going to be two years of just investigation after investigation because i think that plays exactly right into trump's hands for twenty twenty and i think scottie when you have maxine waters has had a financial services jerry navl or as head of judiciary adam schiff as intelligence intel and then you've got a logic cummings i think is oversight these are not middle of the road members of the house the these are left liberal members and i don't think we're going to be able to help themselves i think they're going to be extremely aggressive and i think what that then calls into question scott is a lot of these democrats that will be potentially picking up seats have been running as more moderate or centrist candidates i think they're going to put them in trouble and i think going on playing the trumpet hands in twenty twenty but i think the other part of the story that i want to talk about i'll give rick some time i think republicans if they lose the house i think that might be picking up four seats in the senate was just
10:19 pm
a fascinating dynamic to me to see bronze one in indiana i think cramer is going to win in north dakota i think scott's going to hold on to florida blackburn's already held in tennessee we'll see what happens in about in arizona but what a fascinating night to see where republicans could make three or four seats gain in the senate lose the house and then we come into tomorrow looking at a very interesting dynamic for the next two years we'll talk about dynamic i've got to get to my favorite lever of rick how aggressive are the democrats now in their victory lap. number one over the next twenty four hours or more clearly how are they going to govern for the next two years are we basically just facing the next two years of a stalemate and a hissy fit between the two parties it depends on how aggressive is going to depend on how the total ends up tonight i think is probably going to be somewhere between twenty eight and twenty nine seats picked up not bad i agree it's not like the giant tsunami but it's not bad how well that they can govern and whether they can legislate is going to have everything to do with whether or not president trump
10:20 pm
decides he wants to work with the democrats in congress or not he's made some noises that he might want to democrats support infrastructure that could be a heck of a good place to start if i had been the president i would have started with that in the first place so we'll see obviously there's an opportunity here for a lot of investigations i think it's going to be a subpoena congress let's not kid one another that's going to be there i actually agree with something ned said that happens every now and then the democrats the democrats could overdo it you don't want to make the next two years all about investigating this president that will bite them in the unit what come twenty twentieth's that's all this is about well that said i mean and now i have to ask you let's just say nothing happens the economy starts growing all the sudden what president trump's been bragging about just stops does this mean he could turn and say see what happens when you put the democrats in power this is what happens i mean is this kind of just giving republicans maybe it's making lemonade out
10:21 pm
a limb and but it is kind of giving them kind of a guest. no i actually been you know i had this conversation with my dad who served in congress for ten years just yesterday and i thought i can make a very compelling argument as to why democrats taking the house back is extremely good for trump in two thousand and twenty whereas i think maybe when three hundred fifty electoral votes if they overplay their hand but i will say this scott even if things slow down in the house and obviously no legislation is going to get through it all of the democrats running the house and republicans running the senate let's not forget republicans running the senate they will be able to put through if they get another four seats for form four more seats a majority they're going to be able to run through a lot more federal judicial nominations and i think you'll be seeing a lot of that being the focus over the next two years where trump and the republicans in the senate will have their way on the nominations and confirmations in the federal judicial and i said this before i'll say it again i think at the end of the day trumps greatest accomplishment when he's when he's out of office will be his complete reshaping of the federal judiciary and that's
10:22 pm
a very good point so i have to act and it will be one well that's the thing rick everynight you know is going to be the leader right now i mean everything nancy are we seeing nancy pelosi again going to be taking over that gavel have the democrats is this kind of are they ready to take leadership again in that set of characters forward it's actually one of the most fascinating questions of this election is whether or not nancy pelosi will take over the gavel i suspect she will still politics right and then see pelosi is the one who brings all the money to the party i'll be very surprised if she's not the next speaker of the house now personally i would prefer some other choices i think the time has come to have a change over there i do want to say this though let's let's not kid ourselves if the economy should turn and i'm not anticipating that certainly not in the next year but if it should turn don't think for a second that democrats in the house would get the blame for presidents get the credit as this president's getting presidents get the blame i actually think
10:23 pm
presidents get too much credit and pretty much blame. for the business cycle but that's how it works i'm not sure that that's going to be something that's going to work i mean. a different perspective on this conversation because it's something that maybe gentlemen we should be talking about shouldn't we really be asking why the republicans aren't having a complete sweep look at the conditions right now in this country economically superb no wars i mean when you really look at the at the parallels compared to what this country has faced in the past and i know democrats will say obama is responsible for the economy and you know trump stirrers will say that he's responsible for the economy putting all that aside given the conditions of this country right now should the republicans have done a lot better. there's a fascinating fascinating thing among americans we tend to vote our wallets when things are bad when things are good in let's be honest things are awfully good
10:24 pm
right now i think we're less inclined to vote or while we start to focus on other things i would argue i don't know if ned agrees with this or not i would argue the president may have miscalculated in terms of how he decided he wanted to campaign if i had been advising him i would have pushed the economy harder he suggested it was a boring subject for the campaign and decided to go in some other direction and we'll see what the results are tonight there may be some states where that pays off for him i think in general it's probably not going to work as well as it could have for him so we'll see but you know the economy is a funny thing we get very spoiled very quickly there that you want to call it on. yes no i agree with rick it is kind of funny when when people are doing very well they start to focus on other issues and i've got to say i think republicans completely split the bit on the health care issue they had an opportunity to deal with that they also had an opportunity to really put forward i think a more proactive vision for what they would do if they really actually did get
10:25 pm
around to repealing obamacare i think they had good plans for dealing with preexisting conditions they were terrible on messaging on that and i think i think rick has kind of hit on this thing point i mean trump has been talking about the economy but trump's real goal and strategy if you really look at where he was doing his rallies looking at where to use focusing on messaging he had a very much a senate focused strategy in these last couple weeks where he's doing his rallies the immigration issue played very well most days and i think it's paying off for him tonight in regards to the senate seats i just don't know how well going to play in the house again i think you know obviously democrats probably going to take the house back so he made a calculation i think it pays off the senate doesn't pay off in the house well i know it's been a long day for both of you i know you've got a long night still ahead of you ned thank you for joining us and i want to throw this to our friend our reporter over there and los angeles because it's what you know the west coast has been definitely seeing a lot of activity we're focusing more a middle and each cast but guess what that's going on in california in fact where that's probably where a lot of house seats possibly could be picked up natasha tell us what's going on.
10:26 pm
yeah you're absolutely right scotty as you both know all eyes are on the house tonight in california alone has five seats currently held by republicans that could all be a ta step now one of the five districts up for grabs is district forty eight it's rather interesting because hillary clinton one that district by just one and a half percent back in two thousand and sixteen so incumbent day in that world walker is fighting for his sixteen term against democrat harley root ab and right now real clear politics has rohrbacher ahead three point four points and right now these are all poll results as election results are you know expected in the next hour or so on the west coast here and on the governor's race between given you some and he's the former friend san francisco mayor and also the republican businessman john cox he has new some in a strong lead of sixteen and a half points and in arizona vying for the seats of republican senator jeff flake
10:27 pm
who is retiring and our republican representative murtha makes sally and her democratic opponent representative kiersten in cinema so right now the two are in a very close race make sally is only one point again this is just a poll at this point there are many stark differences between the two candidates because sally is a former air force colonel and a combat pilot and cinema was an anti-war activist in the early two thousand and other key issue in this race is border security as you all may very well know. and now over to nevada republican incumbent dean heller is up against democrat jackie rosen right now real clear politics is reporting rosen ahead four points and now the race is another hotly contested one heller seat could be vulnerable as hillary clinton won the state in two thousand and sixteen but experts are calling this a very close race and interestingly the president's popularity is split almost
10:28 pm
fifty fifty in the vatican and rose and had a forty two percent favorable view so now it's still early on the west coast to tell you know and some of these races of course in fact if the house does come down in california analysts are saying get ready to wait and some races may not get decided her days or even weeks when are def i going to have a late night and i know we need to run real quick we need to go to the east coast go over trying to chavez and you know let me just a minute now the house decision is not going to come down in california by the way i think the two races that we're looking at there is no vada and that's the heller rosen race and in arizona the mike sally cinema race and i think as we look at things down we're going to be on the air here for about another hour i think as we look at the way that the landscape is now shaping up i think one of the two of the most important races there we're going to be looking at in those of the west coast races and that's why we're fortunate to have the tosh out there checking on that
10:29 pm
force is going to be the race in nevada and the way the race in arizona and nevada could really be a bellwether because i mean the population of nevada is changing so much i mean it's really it's a place where almost eighty percent of the concentration is in the las vegas area so that's one of the areas that we're going to be looking at as well let's do this now i think you were mentioning that maybe a good thing to do is go up to that we need to get a quick hit with turn it because there's a lot of things going out and there's definitely some issues that happen at the polls say in new york trading what have you seen. yeah so. some big races taking place tonight a massive loss for democrats in the state of indiana republican mike brown is elected to the u.s. senate and he defeated his incumbent joe donnelly this really didn't surprise many people because the president campaigned hard for bron and we have to remember that the president won this state two years ago by about twenty percent so a lot of people anticipated this outcome so this is a big win for republicans now braun's win for the g.o.p.
10:30 pm
gives the party a wider cushion as it seeks to maintain its control of the senate and in new jersey democrat senator bob menendez defeated his opponent republican bob huguenot he will keep his seat despite his indictment on corruption charges related to a campaign donor now this case did end in a mistrial but it seems that does found a successful message during the campaign saying that a vote for huguenot is the same as a vote for trump now according to people i've spoken to they weren't exactly huge supporters of menendez but they absolutely were not supporters of trump so that's a win for democrats now here in new york democrat andrew cuomo is keeping his seat as new york governor as the polls are veal that he has beat republican mark molinari making this his third term holding the position but in other news it wasn't an easy day for voters here in new york many people experienced several issues while out voting today first of all was the lines were extremely long and
