a spike in anti semitic. and egypt draft a lot of the burka as it warms both male and female terrorists wearing them to avoid detection. joining us this hour this is r.t. international. president says republicans will try to work with democrats in the wake of the shift in the house of representatives democrats wrested control of the house following the crucial midterm elections and last night the republican party defied history to expand to our senate majority well significantly beating expectations in the house. for the mid. and midterm year hopefully we can all work together next year to continue delivering for the
2:02 pm
american people it seems we're facing a divided government in the legislative branch at this point the houses of congress we've got the house of representatives and the u.s. senate are controlled by different parties the democrats gained control of the house of representatives while the senate remains solidly republican with the republicans actually increasing their leadership and their role in the senate gaining a few seats it's not exactly clear how many they gained but they did clearly make some gains last night in their control of the senate now both sides seem to be congratulating themselves seeing this as a victory the democrats are rejoicing that they seem to have taken control of the house of representatives the republicans including president trump are celebrating the fact that they've solidified their control of the senate let's take a look at some of the aftermath of last night's vote to family story the constitution's checks and balances to the job. of america spoke. and took back the house of representatives. so
2:03 pm
tonight is a night to celebrate how far our movement has come. for the. law several others have announced the senate going into republican control that's a huge moment a huge victory for the president to fill testament to the fact that many voters want their state wide officials to be people who will continue to have this economic boom going are voting in favor of freedom and free markets with control of the house of representatives the democrats will be much more able to block trump's agenda furthermore on the democrats will have the ability to launch more investigations into donald trump the question of impeachment remains open as the democrats do have the possibility of bringing impeachment charges against donald trump however an impeachment trial would require the senate which is solidly republican to vote out the president however at this point we've heard from donald
2:04 pm
trump he spoke about how the numbers showed a big success for the republican party there was a big turnout of supporters and donald trump spoke about you know the gains made in the senate compared himself to previous administrations and the successes that were possibly made and furthermore donald trump when he spoke he talked about how he was willing to work with democrats he said that he'd be willing to cooperate with the democratic party when it came to issues such as the drug prices and other issues he urged bipartisan cooperation it's also important to note that during the press conference trump was asked about whether or not russia and china had quote meddled in the election now trump did not give a direct answer to the question and said simply that he's been working with the f.b.i. and the justice department did not give a direct answer about whether or not he was going to accuse russia or china or any other country of meddling in the election result. trump did warn the democrats that
2:05 pm
if they investigated him he would launch investigations into them for alleged leaks trump also clashed with the media quite a bit during his press conference so the country is reacting to quite a dramatic vote was quite a big midterm election that just happened here in the united states and the results are mixed meanwhile of a seventeen thousand cool's about voting problems were documented but they're far from being the only incidents that these elections that will be remembered.
2:06 pm
no it would be. right if you moved here from here maybe you mean.
2:07 pm
let's bring in michael patrick flanagan he's the president of flanagan consulting a former republican congressman great to have you on. i would say that one of the political catchphrases the last couple of years has been foreign interference. so i'm so surprised when i see how many foreign owned firms donate millions to the u.s. midterm elections so my question to you would be what are they expecting to get in return for their money because there's no such thing as a free lunch and you know certainly in politics. well that's the truth there is so much commerce done in the united states particularly by foreigners in tour interspersed with american companies and on their own that they have an interest in the elections but most most foreign interests in the united states are very careful to steer clear of it there are many laws planted taken deep across the nation that keep foreign nationals from being involved in the elections even in ways and that
2:08 pm
are that are you know innocuous you know letting the employees off for that day or something like that but they certainly can't donate and they can't advocate so i think that the interests that they may have of the legal version are rooting only those that interfere in a different way and in an illegal way are caught and punished hopefully and then this is something that but the democrats have been worried about for years and i don't think that they found much evidence of it other than a few bots and some other problems on the edge but advocacy is something that americans hold dear for themselves to themselves and that's how it breaks out in the waterway ok we can hear the opinions now it x. f.b.i. agents claim that it's americans not russians it was stoking it election phase let's just listen to this opinion festival everyone's witnessed the playbook
2:09 pm
playing out now they don't need russia say much they've learned the taxicabs devastatingly effective so i think it was clinton what's we had speaking that former f.b.i. agent it's not a fact comments are not your opinion. i'm not quite sure it's what he refers but if he's talking about americans involvement in overseas elections that's true and and we were we were honestly you know from from a from a completely fair point of view we don't do is we as we say we prevent people from doing that here but we're delighted to vent our services to other people around the world to help interfere in their elections and sometimes as a state actor the obama administration was famous for its involvement in israel and elsewhere so i'm not exactly sure what the with the agent was discussing there but if that was that then that he's not wrong let's talk about them to his news conference today he's always on a mate and he was asked a lot about you know just how willing how capabilities of working with the
2:10 pm
democrats now the democrats a spent two years berating donald trump in insulting him. impeachment repeatedly can he do you think can he if actively cooperate with the other side. that's a terrific question and it's and it's and it's a complex answer first nancy pelosi is going to have the barest majority i mean it's really probably going to be within ten votes either way and the republicans are much more disciplined in their voting and they're much more of a like mind there are some liberal republicans and very conservative republicans providing a small gulf there but the difference between the most conservative democrat the most liberal democrat is a much wider gulf and nancy pelosi is going to have a great deal of difficulty producing legislation forget the republicans just inside of her own caucus that will be able to garner enough votes to pass without republican help and so when you're talking about wedges and working with the president you actually have to be talking about the president providing some
2:11 pm
republican votes in the house to help her get some initiatives passed and that's wonderful leverage for the president and i think a good thing for the nation because when the two parties work well together the best legislation is produced and i think since since medicare since obamacare passed the parties on both sides have engaged in a lot of legislation that will only pass with the help of one party and we're going to do that and we're going to jam it down the other guy's throat that's not helpful it's not helpful at all so if nancy takes a conciliatory tone with the president ask for his help to deliver republican votes for measures that she'll be able to push through on a compromised fashion's i think that she'll get some good legislation passed i absolutely do not think she will do that because she has committee chairmen who are aging baby boomers who have waited literally decades you have and have no interest in compromising at this point i'm thinking of maxine waters and her and others that particular so i wouldn't think that there's going to be
2:12 pm
a lot of opportunities but where they come up if nancy goes the president says i need your help to get this passed the president i think will be very obliging and happy to get it done provided the legislation can look right and i think there's a possibility but it's got to start with her and she's got to be able. to deliver the bulk of her own caucus to do it and this remains to be seen given how much just how much animosity there has been from democratic politicians towards the president over the last couple of years do you think do you believe they genuinely can look past that personal failings for the president to actually work with him if he comes up with what's a credible idea or would it always be a stumbling block. i don't it's another terrific question i don't know exactly i. can see is a very seasoned politician trump is not a seasoned politician but he's a very seasoned businessman trump has proven he doesn't hold grudges i mean you know he he hugged and kissed mitt romney and ted cruz and marco rubio and people he
2:13 pm
battled brutally with in the primary he he's he's from time to time had good things to say about many democrats and trump is not always been a republican that's important to understand to and so he's very familiar with big city politics and the democrats that come with them so i think that that from his side if he says he's willing to work i would take him at his word and work with it the question is will the funders will the people who've written the huge checks to elect this very liberal very left wing majority in the house. will they allow these kind of compromises and that's going to be difficult this could be difficult needle for nancy to thread michael it's been a pleasure to speak to appreciate your time for coming on r.t. my guest is former republican congressman and the president of the flanagan consulting that is michael patrick running. a swiss bank the biggest japanese car maker and the british defense giant they are among we touched upon this foreign owned firms giving millions of dollars to republicans and democrats in the midterms
2:14 pm
despite foreign donations being burned on his jacket in vigor explains just how this is allowed. it's no surprise that meddling was on the mind once again in the run up to the midterms we are receiving information through a variety of public and private sources that indicate that. we should be seriously concerned about people trying to influence the elections in two thousand and eighteen and spending serious money to do it serious money and perhaps those concerns aren't completely unfounded because while the vast majority of the five billion spent on these elections was burned through by the parties themselves a nice chunk of change was generously spent by foreign companies a list put together by the center for responsive politics shows over a dozen countries jumping at the chance to put their money where their interests are the data shows most support was thrown behind republicans spending roughly four million dollars more on the right than the left the u.k.
2:15 pm
switzerland and germany were the biggest spenders on the list of over a dozen countries and you may be surprised to hear that mexican based companies overwhelmingly gave to republicans and all the contributions weren't high every dollar is another metaphorical brick in the wall isn't it now you may be thinking but that's illegal right well yes and no while it is true that only american citizens can make political contributions there is a lovely little loophole that allows american divisions of foreign companies to form political action committees or pacs and collect money from american employees and this by the never ending meddling mania in the us over the past two years the federal election commission has rejected proposed changes to address foreign influence in the us three times and we can't accept the fact that why would people want to give a small. unless they think they're going to kick back and getting something from it so it's a reflection of the type of government we have is a reflection that we have interests around the world we're in
2:16 pm
a hundred and fifty hundred sixty countries we are maintaining an empire so everybody has an interest and we're out there overregulating trade where you know threatening sanctions and putting on tariffs and so the lot of people are buying influence so i think that is the problem to curtail the money you know we're sort of debt tacking this symptom yes we want to do that in the law says you're not supposed to but the loophole is that there's a complex system here through the pack system that you know that had a huge huge problem the laws says that they can't do it and they should say that if it's coming from a from a foreign source just because it's given to a pac to excavate it that shouldn't be allowed. germany's leading jewish organization is calling for special anti semitism classes for muslim moderates it comes amid a spike in hate crimes against jews to all of it has the story. jewish community
2:17 pm
leaders in germany say they want to see integration classes for migrants that focus on the semitism saying that this could help stem a rileys in anti-semitic incidents in the country many of these people have been shipped by regimes in which anti semitism is essential and the jewish state is denied the right to live to prevent the worst scenario we need to live the integration course is to these people much more preferably by a country of origin the official statistics but a rise. in germany just over four hundred were reported in the first half of twenty eighteen knots up ten percent on the same period last year the vast majority of these were committed by neo nazi and fall right groups the leadership of germany's. foremost jewish organization paints a bleak picture of the future saying he sees more problems coming from migrants one of the most shocking cases of twenty eighteen was caught on camera shows him

a dish she says to me do you. think showing a nineteen year old syrian molly going to be using two men from berlin for wearing a kippah going as far as to attack the men with his belt jewish leaders have cautioned against wearing the traditional skull cap so as not to draw attention in berlin we've seen reports of jewish children becoming the target of anti semitic bullying in school and this summer ten people were arrested after a brawl in a berlin park which started after one group of people from syria snatched away a star of david necklace worn by a jewish man also from the same country over one million refugees and migrants event in the country since twenty fifteen and as chancellor merkel points out some have contributed to the problem of noir we have a new phenomenon as we have many refuges among whom there are for example people of arab origin who bring in another form of anti-semitism into the country i
2:19 pm
fortunately and to cynicism existed before that i met with burly rabbi yehuda title and i asked him how bad the situation is and if he agrees with extra integration classes for migrants focusing on anti semitism the problem with anti-semitism in germany today is unfortunately growing there is much worry about the developments in germany especially due to the fact that many refugees have come from countries which they were breastfed with hate towards israel and towards jewish people of course we welcome everybody but at the same time. being a refugee doesn't only have merit it also has obligations it's not something that only affects the jewish people this affects all people that honor and respect democracy i want to live in a society which respects all people so we have to understand that this is a very serious top agenda issue also for the leaders of the german government and
2:20 pm
we strongly encourage them to take it in that manner this week since the eightieth anniversary of kristallnacht or the night of the broken glass when jewish homes and businesses and places of worship were set ablaze by nazis with the nascent support of out of hitler's governments while the situation in today's germany is thankfully a long way from out of the one nine hundred thirty s. that period of history continues to cast a long shadow peter all of our r.t. berlin. a photo of a palestinian protester has gone viral for its similarities to a famous painting of the french revolution and it's now become a symbol of resistance.

a cover for the crimes that they are committing it's not part of personal freedom as some say seventy states have already barred the covering in public it sparked it sparked heated discussion the un human rights committee even ruled france's ban constituted a violation of human rights earlier my colleague andrew father gazed opinion on the issue from historian adel darwish political and social commentator. they have been actually instances in egypt and elsewhere where actually men pretending to be women and so it's for security as class a hypocritical double standard to actually suggest that it's actually a i do but i don't think anybody saying that we. are a lot of actually finding secular freedoms i think it is a very slippery slope when you are starting to legislate what muslim women anonymously member presumably i mean if a jewish woman wants to cut the head or somebody wants what is a fancy dress or these are part of

to really protect women from slugs forcing them to wear the veil and the board this is about freedom is a short skirt it's not libertarianism a headscarf it's not conservatism we need to open our minds and become available about these issues that's. correct that has been rocked by anti-government protests for more than half a year now since april more than three hundred people have been killed in them according to local human rights groups investigative group redfish visited the country. we're trying to understand what's happening exactly at the moment i mean it's very difficult to keep up with the rival demonstrations. nicaragua's civil unrest began in mid april twenty eighth and has left school or state in hundreds injured
2:26 pm
it began after the government of president daniel ortega proposed social security reform protests and the government soon ditch the proposal but the violence continues. to nicaragua now where thousands of people are fleeing violence as the government crackdown on pro-democracy protesters do you know national media have given widespread coverage to these student videos in opposition protests so on the way right now to meet with the student activists she was our university when the initial protest movement began in april but she soon found herself being threatened by the opposition the. latter like game. one s a scene. then call me. back and move. oh man say i suspect africa and i had a what and i mean that i mean. they're all part of. that i don't set.

the national endowment for democracy any has provided millions of dollars to the groups leading government operations in nicaragua today in twenty seventeen for example the ne d. provided an anonymous organization with eighty six thousand dollars to foster a new generation of democratic youth leaders the international media lays the blame for the civil unrest squarely on president. and his government and highlight opposition voice while providing little to no context of the role of influential actors like the us government nearly forty years later are still trying to overthrow or take.
