7:30 am
as president of france is in the balance the three pillars of the e.u. are on shaky ground is the euro project suffering crisis of competence. the president's former thick cyr get sentenced to three years in prison how will michael cohen's downfall impact from his remaining time in office we'll take a look at that on this edition of. welcome the politicking on larry king on wednesday michael cohn donald trump's form of personal attorney and so-called fixer was sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to several charges his fiar man says cohen still has a lot to say about his time with donald trump and suggests he's even willing to tell didn't question the investigators what he knows how will this latest
7:31 am
development impact the president and where does the robert mueller investigation go next let's start there with our political panel they are john went back republican strategist. party of virginia he's in lansdown virginia and in boston jake nag of a who worked in the obama administration is the former chief speechwriter to attorney general eric holder or john we'll start with you what do you make of what happened in the sentencing of mystic cohen. well you know i think the media would have us believe that michael cohen is this major witness against trump in the mall investigation but i think the sentencing today tells us that he's not as useful as they thought he got a pretty much typical sentence they did a pretty sense investigation like they normally do in federal sentencing the probation office i think they recommended that he do forty two months of the judge gave thirty six and i would expect if he was such
7:32 am
a great witness for the mole investigation he would have gotten a much better deal he didn't so i think they're going to move on and look for a better witness than michael called jake how did you see it. well you know you'll be surprised to learn that i don't agree with that you know i think it's clear that he provided substantial help to the more investigation which is what they said the reason that he continued to get the sense that he got is that he engaged me in a series of corrupt and criminal activities now again they they have said in their in their memos and he has said cohen has said that these actions were taken at the direction of president trump which is a pretty big deal so i don't think that you can discount this as a nothing burger this is this is clearly a big development in the miller best again having said that there's a lot still to come this is only one piece at a much broader story that involves both the more investigation and the investigation coming out of out of the southern district of new york and you just saw even even right after the cohen sentencing you saw american media incorporated
7:33 am
which is the company that owns the national national enquirer admit that they paid money. in hush payments to benefit donald trump in the past election so it's given the twenty sixth election so there are there's a lot happening here and cohen is just one piece of a puzzle but he's a pretty substantial piece and if i was down trump i'd be pretty nervous john lanny davis cones former two need turned advisor release a statement saying that at the appropriate time if you missed a moment completions investigation and the issues his fund were for he looks forward to assisting michael hill who says michael cohen to stay or only knows about mr trump and there's a lot more he knows what you see in full of that john. well it look to be frank i mean the fact that the president's own lawyer and his former fixer as he's called is you know not a a friendly anymore is bad for the president it's bad for the white house it's bad
7:34 am
for the republican party it's bad for the reelection twenty sixteen or twenty twenty there's no question about that so it's not a good development it's one that i'm sure the white house wishes would go away and one that really is not going to be helpful to the political cause at least for the next two years jake and someone is saying that the scuttlebutt is that trump is vulnerable to criminal charges the only way he can delay it is by being reelected and then he can't be indicted as a president soviets reelected he guarantees four more years of not being in big trouble you by now jake. not necessarily and looked that opinion that a president can be indicted that's not the constitution anywhere that's the opinion of the office of legal counsel and that's just one opinion that was that was made several years ago so that has never actually really been tested in a real way having said that i certainly think that there is going to be the next
7:35 am
election is going to be a referendum on the president on donald trump not just his corrupt and criminal activities but also his policy failures of which there have been many so you know the american people certainly have a chance to render judgment on this president i would suspect that if the president believes that by staying in office he can fend off some kind of criminal indictment that he will certainly seek to do that and as we've seen in the past election and as we've seen in all these allegations to come out about his coordination with in collusion with russia i would suspect that he'd be that he would be a pretty dangerous person to be in that position we'll see we'll see how he reacts but i do think that that he's got to be pretty concerned right now about the more investigation and the investigation out of the southern district of new york he is tied up in a lot of criminal investigations that is not
7:36 am
a place you want to be john ken starr the independent invented counsel investigated clinton recently said that they're either going to two avenues robin mills froebel either end with an impeachment were for or an indictment are you worried about impeachment john. you know i certainly republicans should be concerned about it because of what happened in the house but you know i think the political question his here what are the democrats really get out of impeachment i think you can't ignore history and you can't ignore the current state of politics in our country first of all the history and one of the republicans get out of impeachment in the one nine hundred ninety s. they they they lost livingston as speaker because larry flynt picked up his pick of bellows and put in public you know basically newt gingrich was basically out after about election during that whole tomatoes period and then we lost the popular vote in the presidency in two thousand even though we had of winning the presidency we
7:37 am
still lost the popular vote so i don't know what republicans really got out of the last impeachment that we have in our history so i don't know if the democrats are better off politically if they pursue that i think if if. everything in the polling is to be believed especially like in you know states like my home state where his he's so far under water he's in the thirty's their pride better off just running against him in two thousand and twenty and taking their chances the probably going to have their though is who's going to take him on who they have bedo roark elizabeth warren i just i just don't see a strong candidate emerging out of there that will have a phenomenon like say obama or even the trump phenomenon that was in two thousand and sixteen jake you think the democrats should vote to impeach. well i will take issue with one thing as i think you don't pursue impeachment for political benefit i think you pursue it if the president's committed high crimes and misdemeanors that merit is removed from office i think that's a pretty important distinction so you know certainly democrats will provide will
7:38 am
provide some pretty hefty oversight over the next couple of years which is something that's been sorely lacking over the last couple of years i think the question of impeachment we'll see it'll you know i think it'll depend a lot on what additional information comes out of the more investigation but i can tell you that a lot of democrats and a lot of americans will probably feel that the best way to. to go after or to defend against the corruption and the failures of this president is to not just remove the president but to remove his entire administration and that's going to happen in the twenty twenty election so absolutely the democrats will be making a strong stand in two thousand and twenty and i think you saw in two thousand and eighteen that the democrats are ready with a pretty potent message that is hopeful that is forward looking and the provides relief for the american people john where you make of that meeting between trump and schumer and palosi who is it a win for anyone or we're going to have
7:39 am
a shutdown will the government. you know government shutdown politics is just stupid i just think you know we have nobody ever wins i mean the last time we had a shutdown it was over a weekend and we the republican side was able to pin on schumer but you know it's as someone who lives in northern virginia and has the economy really intertwined with a government i just i'm always against the party shutting down the government it never works we've never won that battle except on limited occasions so i just don't i just don't think that's good politics in terms of the meeting in the oval office if frankly you know nobody yet nobody comes out of that looking good i just thought that that was really really inappropriate for our leaders to be bickering back and forth like that there's a lot of blame to go around but certainly it shouldn't be that way and it's just a shame what's happening in our country right now and the bitter divide that there is between democrats and republicans and i think there's blame to go around but you
7:40 am
know it starts at the top and i think our leaders need to act better than the gentlemen another jeeves instead of leaving what do you make of more of that. well this president this white house has had more turnover than any other president white house in recent memory and there's a reason for that it's because it's a lousy place to work. and you get treated incredibly badly or your reputation you know. your reputation is in big trouble once you enter this white house and certainly once you leave and at this point to you are vulnerable to criminal investigations or to misuse in a criminal activity you're going to be caught up in all of that so this is a job that nobody is going to want and the problem with that as we've seen in a variety of different jobs in the white house and in this administration is that then the person who ends up taking the position is someone who is either. unqualified or undeserving or both and you get folks like you know matt and matt would occur as acting attorney general who are both unqualified for the position
7:41 am
and also clearly unscrupulous and so you sort of end up with this with this race to the bottom where the people who are interested in taking these jobs are precisely the people who should never have them so we'll see who ends up. to this job but i don't have high hopes for them john as a republican what do you make of this president and this administration thing. well one of the things that all make two points number one i think we're missing a lot of opportunities and i've always said i'm a jack kemp republican and one of the things that jack was so great at is bringing the republican message to new communities and the country is change the demographics are changing and now it's happening and with suburban voters which is a traditionally a strong republican bloc and we just saw that in the midterms as as our country becomes more diverse the republican party has to adapt and it's not doing that and
7:42 am
i think that's something that we're missing a real opportunity right here that could have long lasting impacts on us the second point i would make is it's one of those weird situations where the president's approval rating is low he can he can't get above fifty except in a few polls here and there and the economy's doing well everything you would want out of a conservative administration you have you have conservative judges you have you know a senate going to be able to confirm more conservative judges you have a great economy you have pushback on countries that have taken advantage of us and trade for many many years but at the same time you have this style this approach that even republicans complain about the tweets all those different kinds of things and i think that that as we go into the reelection i think the platform and the playbook that worked in two thousand and sixteen is not necessarily the one that's going to work in two thousand and twenty john and jake thanks to me we'll call on
7:43 am
you again thank you so much. thank you thank you larry for politicking after the break. there of russian and lights. in a world of big partisan lot and conspiracy it's time to wake up to dig deeper to hit the stories that made stream media refuses to tell more than ever we need to be smarter we need to stop slamming the door on the back and shouting past each other it's time for critical thinking it's time to fight for the middle
7:44 am
for the truth the time is now we're watching closely watching the hawks. aeroflot russian and lights. you know i work with potential school shooters for a period of twelve years and none of the students who we work with in our facility facility ever went on to commit a school shooting so that gives me hope that if you catch the students early in. or
7:45 am
provide the kind of support and mental health treatment that they need but they can come out of the crisis. they all. say. yes to all this is all the good.
7:46 am
luck about politicking john doors a canadian born comedian and actor who tells his outsider status in the united states even though he's been living in america for a decade he's the star of comedy central's big questions huge chances and it's a pleasure to welcome here in studios stinkers. to his producer remarkably long list of successful to medians. willow that dan aykroyd should be at the b. michael j. fox show buddy howie mandell jim carrey what is in the water and kevin norman donald tom green everyone what is in the water in canada that's
7:47 am
a great question i don't know. deep desire to get out of there maybe you have a green card what do you make about the term over immigrant immigrants personally we don't want you what we're doing to you white oh interesting yes there is there's a double standard perhaps you know there are a lot of i would say white canadians living illegally in america. so they illegally sure absolutely yeah i've known some of them and they get away with it because they're white i don't know great question but there seems to be trouble at the southern border so that's one of our big questions that we'd like to ask if our show goes to series and we have a huge answer for it which i can't reveal now because i've heard to do that no one watched the show but we do have a solution for the show so the show we satire vice news to a degree which i enjoy i love vice news but i think there's
7:48 am
a fun sort of an objective journalistic approach that they use which i like their journalist will their interview subject agrees with their narrative they'll say things like cool which immediately says there's no objectivity to the journalism so we borrowed that format and we like the idea of an outsider coming down to america pretending he's got all the answers so the arrogant version or the more arrogant version of myself that i get to play decides that americans can't solve the problem because they're too close to it but i do have all the answers yes in the show i have all the answers and the two big questions we ask our side we ask how to stop cyber bullying and i solve that and we also stop teachers from preying on students which is a huge problem especially in the state of texas and we solve both those problems. especially in the state of texas within a three year span there are seven hundred incidents of impropriety reported so teachers have an inappropriate relationship with their students in
7:49 am
a female and female to male you name it either or male male female male i mean this list goes on texas because there are seven hundred cases reported in the next state the next state with the most numbers was forty five and that was pennsylvania let's take a look at a clip bring me your big questions and i'll find you huge answers i'm not and i'm not here and i'm not there. that i just got your attention join me as i solve the two biggest threat for children safety cyber bullying and predatory teachers let's say you're trolling made me blow my head off in a microwave were you ever attracted any of your teachers i didn't know i was not at all however. i would if i am. thirty five. actually forty but you did. yes larry this is
7:50 am
a little weird so. you think it's weird what you're doing what i'm doing in saving america i don't think so america is a great country. you call it a problem you've got a problem in america you've got a problem with me good idea. it's your role to make america a better place i think it's a worthy worthy venture what do you say about cyber bully while cyber bullying i think is an interesting problem it's a phenomenon i mean bullying i think has always existed i remember being bullied but the difference today is in my opinion is that the internet has completely changed culture so when i was bullied growing up like a bully would maybe i'd get punched in the face one day or the fear of being punched in the face one day was scary but you know the next. hey you know life kind of went on or you can escape i feel like the internet impressionable young minds feel like that's there forever and it will constantly haunt them like if
7:51 am
a marine got circulated a horrible mean got circulated around your high school and you were an impressionable vulnerable student i think there's a complication there so we analyzed that problem and figured out it was a tech problem so in these attacks solution so we pitched an app and it's a real tech investors in incubators and yeah you have to watch the show to see how they react but it's a brilliant idea was mine and the tech investors. if you watch the show you'll see if the investor not ok you said in a recent interview that i feel overwhelmed with anxiety when it comes to the internet and trump in all this aggression every time i put on the television check my twitter feed i really feel it what are you doing about that would only doing about that i'm sorry i'm turning turning it off i mean i go online to promote shows like all tweet about this experience right but i will not read anyone's opinion.
7:52 am
i'll is overwhelming i'm now reading i got into reading people's opinions about the news and yeah i didn't like the places my mind was going so yeah i'm trying to go off the grid as much as i can what's your view of troop my view of trump from the canadian standpoint how do you look upon him. very popular prime minister do you not yet we have a technically. popular prime minister living in a technically well. liberal conscientiously here's what i would say i think our prime minister has great quality and that's empathy. i think that's probably the most important quality president doesn't have i don't think he does you know personally i don't think he does and i think empathy is probably the most important quality that we cannot say that john do you fear deportation.
7:53 am
with what's going on with america no with immigrants you are an immigrant true but i'm a legal i'm a green card carrying resident alien i have rights but he could remove your green card counting with the power of one executive order that would be amazing oh you know i would if i was an executive order if you would deport it by trump i would love it would be great for what you have just said so if he held up an executive order and signed it and john doerr is out here that would be great for my career oh yeah that yeah to do a show from canada fine we could do it from what they could do it your cat is a great country the mighty canada it's strong it's powerful is there any donald trump type in he has doug ford. for a number rob ford's yeah remember the great rob ford the mayor the greatest mare in the history of civilization. now when he walks in the camera is there anything
7:54 am
better than the marijuana smoke crack a couple times john couple questions sure what kind of questions are you looking to answer well big questions like provide huge answers well ok so whatever divides america so for instance you mentioned immigration people are poor arised on this issue i think we can stop the fighting and find common ground i think there's a happy medium to what is that media well. i get i don't want to reveal this because when we go to series by the way i don't know if we're going to go to series can i ask you a question. you know how does one stay relevant in this business for the doing of a sixty one years you know i just think you've got to keep doing it and of the public exception of the going to work cept you can't force the ship true you can't grab the camera and shave like me you know you just have to be yourself but you're funny you're bright thank you i show you a bit with colin you're attached to a horse. you have an unusual approach to company and questions and answers are
7:55 am
great because people are always looking for answers and i know we deflected there but i appreciate that advice and it's also going to stop me from grabbing the camera on the well you know what i mean no i know but i was literally going to grab the camera and say please but i'm not going to do that now don't do that but i deflected your question i didn't mean to do that i just feel like if i were to tell you the solution to the immigration debate it would ruin the ending of the show yes that we have planned what will happen if on my theory you are deported but what is what this obsession of me being deported well you said things against trump and you look at the way he is what did i say against trump really and all i said is that he lacks empathy that's all i said and he might agree with that. i think a trump watched our show he might say this guy's got some great ideas to be honest with you we monetize bulleen he's probably going to like that as a list you bet yeah. our cyber bullying app by the way targets hurtful worms
7:56 am
words and terms right is a very brilliant idea again i came up with it and so we target her for worms that we use like what we want to use is the technology. we want to use places like the patriotic n.s.a. or f.b.i. and we want to use their their technology but we want to use it instead of targeting terrorists we want to target hurtful words and terms so that if people try and tweet horrible bullying taxed the internet service providers and cell phone companies which would receive a portion of the money they will send a tax to them saying if you want to send this hurtful tweet it's going to cost you money so then see what i'm getting at so the bully will be charging money if they want to bully and the victim of that bullying text will receive a portion of that money paid out and gift card so that they can buy expensive clothes and going expensive vacations and the bully will slowly lose money and then
7:57 am
they'll be a natural equilibrium this is a brilliant idea that joran thank you so much difficulty regime is larry a pleasure thank you for your time today we have learned so much so by. john doerr . it wait to see all your shows the great larry king thank you we can't wait for the is to immigration if you're still here. we thank john both for joining us today we thank you for joining me this additional politicking if you learned anything right maybe you could join the conversation on my facebook page or tweet me at kings things and don't forget to use the politicking hash tag and that's all for this edition of politicking it's going to take two before used port.
