a mug shot was taken without her job she was given only a short sleeved t. shirt in contravention to her own islamic dress code she also told her daughter that she wasn't in essence given adequate food. and u.s. president donald trump slams a report by buzz feed news claiming trump instructed his former lawyer michael cohen to lie to congress. it's one am here in moscow and you're watching r t international live from our studio with me in a day or two to welcome to the program russia and germany as top diplomats have condemned washington's decision to walk away from a key cold war era missile treaty following a meeting in moscow they stated the move undermines global stability.
5:02 pm
after the u.s. leaves the i.n.f. treaty the whole system of arms control and the stability of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty will be on the throat. we're really interested in saving the i.n.f. treaty and russia can assist us in the i.n.f. treaty as it is now is not enough we need to expand it because there are plenty of new autonomous well. consume students including those in cyberspace and they should be regulated not only the u.s. and russia should be included in the treaty but other states as well china the u.s. has said it will withdraw from the i.n.f. treaty agreement with russia at the beginning of next month moscow says it's invited us inspectors to examine the missiles which washington claims violate the treaty but to no avail the i.n.f. treaty was signed in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven by ronald reagan and mikhail gorbachev and took effect a year later it stipulated that both the us and the soviet union destroy all ground based missiles with ranges between five hundred and fifty five hundred kilometers.
5:03 pm
fears of an arms race were not only prompted by the missile treaty dispute they were further exacerbated after donald trump unveiled plans for an ambitious expansion of america's defense capabilities. token defense and we're also talking to a friend who can't forget a friend see the can we we have the finest weapons in the world and we're ordering the finest weapons in the world america's just published the first review of its missile defense program and almost a decade and it besides plans to deploy twenty new ground based interceptors in alaska as well as new radars and sensors besides plans to use laser armed drones and stealthy f. thirty five jets the donald trump administration once a leap in technological development the president is keen to get a space force we will recognize that space is a new world striding domain. with the space force leading the way.
5:04 pm
the u.s. president is talking about ok maybe not star wars but militarizing space for sure the ultimate goal is to be able to take down enemy missiles even before they leave the air space of what the president calls rogue countries did call out north korea and iran but in the program review you'll also find russia and china we are committed to establishing a missile defense program that can shield every city in the united states our goal is simple to ensure that we can detect and destroy any missile launched against the united states anywhere anytime anyplace among the threats donald trump pointed out specifically were hypersonic missiles a system capable of launching such weapons called was successfully tested by russia at the end of the seven before.
5:05 pm
the us withdraw from the anti-ballistic missile treaty which was the cornerstone in the field of non proliferation of nuclear weapons and deterring an arms race has forced us to respond. by creating new weapon systems to overcome these missile defense systems there is no analogue of this system in the world according to the russian side the reason they're ramping up their r. and d. in strategic defenses is america's overblown military budget and everything it's being spent on parity means global security the russian foreign ministry says that america's new defense strategy is clearly confrontational nature and aims to show washington's military leadership political analyst chris bambery things the trump administration's policy is bound to lead to a greater arms race. what we have in the white house is very much a president who's pushing through. despite criticism of our eyes and despite
5:06 pm
criticism within the administration within the defense of defense departments any new arms race no which is what trump is threatening particularly with china china is not going to go bankrupt and in fact one of the concerns american defense in the defense department the pentagon is is that this is going to encourage the further militarization of china which up until now has not gone don't the rules of trying to catch up with the united states militarily happy to have its own economic power but if this begins its own laundry gets under way. attacking china and russia by the americans actually china could step up to the mark and that is a concern on the mill american military who are criticizing trouble over not the treaty but over the decision towards this new militarization of space. and the leaked documents shows that despite to raise amazing objections the u.k.

government has been exploring the possibility of a second the brags that referendum the revelation comes after m.p.'s emphatically rejected the prime minister's original divorce deal this week plunging the country deeper into political crisis the paper sets out a timetable for a second photo indicating that the whole process could take up to a year that includes seven months to lay the legal groundwork and a further three months at least for testing the question it also discusses other practicalities including the length of time necessary for campaigning initially media outlets questioned the legitimacy of the leak however downing street to confirm such a document exists while denying the government is actively planning for a second fact they said the paper is purely for illustrative purposes and reiterated the prime minister's position that brags it will go ahead. there are those who want to see no deal and those who want to see a second referendum and potentially frustrate. a second referendum would lead instead to further division it's my duty to deliver on the british people's

instruction to leave the european union and i intend to do so meanwhile the leader of the opposition labor party has set up the conditions under which he would support a. chemical thing called people would be a better than a no deal scenario despite the initial referendums and once in a generation tank. all the options are on the table including the public vote option which we made clear in our conference motion which was i have to remind you you none of us they agreed by our conference last september eleventh what should happen right now is that we leave on the twenty ninth of march on w t o terms because that's what's written into the law but the problem you. parliamentarians the m.p.'s are against the people the people's decision back in the referendum in twenty sixteen so i think over the next ten weeks the six hundred fifty m.p.'s are
5:09 pm
going to try to do everything they possibly can to extend article fifty overturn article fifty or have another referendum and to set themselves against what the people have decided i really don't think that there's a majority in parliament for completely overturning. repealing article fifty it's doubtful whether there is actually a majority for extending or to article fifty either or or having the people's vote so without a majority for any one of these particular options we will leave on w t o terms because that's what's already written into into law. and american born journalist who was detained at st louis airport without charges earlier this week has been detained. as a material witness of that's according to a court in washington u.s. officials also confirm that m r z a hush amy will be released after she testifies in a grand jury investigation fifty nine year old has shown he was born melanie franklin

into an african-american family in new orleans and converted to islam following the nine hundred seventy nine iranian revolution since two thousand and eight she's lived in tehran and been a prominent journalist and presenter of the english language iranian news channel press t.v. show me was reportedly visiting relatives in america and was thought to be filming a black lives matter documentary earlier i spoke to her friend who told us she has been in contact with their high shamy family they've been in regular contact with meyers his children who are all in america decades of experience in journalism and her family are very concerned and the only information and contact the family have had with them as it is a telephone call to her daughter on tuesday where they received the worrying information from him as he told her daughter she had her job she is a muslim woman who wears. a veil covering such as full time wearing at the moment
5:11 pm
that was taken off against her will the mug shot was taken without her job on that she was given only a short sleeved t. shirt in contravention to her own islamic dress code her as she she wears and that she had to gain another t. shirt just to be able to cover some of her hair she also told her daughter that she wasn't given adequate food because she was not given allow muslim option or a vegetarian option on tuesday the only conversation they've had with her she told her daughter that she only been able to eat a cracker or some bread that came with that food since being detained tensions have been high between the u.s. and iran since donald trump's arrival in office with washington recently accusing taran of fabricating charges against four u.s. nationals some of been handed lengthy prison sentences last year washington also abandoned the iran nuclear deal effectively shutting down constructive dialogue between the two countries the iranian foreign minister has called for journalists
5:12 pm
release. she is a famous children she's done nothing but journalism and the rest of mrs hosiery is a very pure affront to freedom of expression a political abuse of an innocent individual and. i believe the united states should release. the debate live now to legal analyst jennifer braden for more discussion about this case jennifer thanks for coming on to the program now according to the court is a material witness and will be released off to she testifies to a grand jury could you explain what the grand jury might be doing and why she would need to be held against her will. yes so there's this question is two fold here now as for what the grand jury is doing we actually don't know factually what this case is about
5:13 pm
a grand jury will convene for the purpose of obtaining information about a case about an upcoming trial and and that's generally what happens it can be closed door shut so it's not it's not made public record but these are things that are going to become public record once it actually goes to trial the grand jury is more for federal crimes or federal cases that require a showing of evidence to show that this is a federal case in fact and there is enough evidence or probable cause to go forward so that's basically what a grand jury would be this testimony would be offered then as evidence for any federal case that comes after that now when it comes to why she has been detained in such a way it is actually u.s. federal law that if somebody is a material witness to something or the they have reason to believe federal authorities have reason to believe that this person is a could be a material witness that means this is a very important witness that she is here and they believe that she could be a flight risk now normally you would just be subpoenaed asked to testify or
5:14 pm
subpoena if you're a u.s. citizen which i think believe one of her children was in this case mars is children but if you're a u.s. citizen you have to comply with that now marzio now be a resident and a citizen of iran doesn't have any legal obligation to adhere to a u.s. subpoena and so if they can show to a judge in the district that she could be a flight risk and flight risk that just means that if you ask her to come and testify as a witness on a case that they will just get on a plane and leave back to their country that's your right to do that then under u.s. law you are allowed to detain somebody only for the period that they witness they testify and then they can leave right after it is u.s. law but that is why it's gone down this way so they did confirm that there is no arrest there are no criminal charges against marzieh herself but apparently her testimony is incredibly important to an ongoing federal case and we don't have any . he tells on what that case is and i believe marzia and her son both of whom were detained as witnesses have been told some information but have not been able to
5:15 pm
relate to or release what that information is in order to protect the case now i mean i spoke to a friend only a few hours ago and she'd spoken to a member of the family an hour prior to that and you know she stressed that the family had no idea at all why marjah had been taken in and until very recently we've only just found this out the authorities have been very silent on why she was taken into custody is it a common process that the authorities don't give any information at all about why a person has been arrested. it would seem troubling and so fair are technically and legally under the united states no that's not it's not ok to do that when somebody has been arrested or charges filed or not filed now in this case . the government or the federal authorities did state that she is not going to be charged with anything she's not in trouble she's just a material witness now as far as the case is concerned because she is not being
5:16 pm
charged with anything she has been promised that she will be immediately released after she provides her testimony since she obviously knows something very important after that then that she will be able to go home then should be released as far as providing information as to the case that is that is actually common practice in the u.s. and it's mainly just to protect the credibility of an ongoing investigation since a grand jury is a precursor to an actual trial and nobody has any knowledge of what this case is what this federal case is even about that as a witness on then if barzilla knows what this case is which i assume she does she's likely been instructed that she cannot under law relate that information to a family of course this is sad for families but this happens in many cases even with u.s. citizens where they're not privy to information or they're not allowed to divulge details about a federal case because for example if the case is about and this isn't to make an example if it's about say a crime syndicate or a family like this you know back in the days of the mob in the u.s.
5:17 pm
if you were to divulge information publicly or even to your family members if you were going to be a witness one that could endanger your family members for having such knowledge or it could even endanger the case or any arrest that might still need to be made so this is why they likely has information but she is not permitted to tell her family and i think there's been indications that that's happened so it is unfortunate for the family members that would want to know but it is at least good or some kind of promising that her family that she's been told that she will be immediately released after she testifies this should have been a day or two but i think they're trying to spread this along as quickly as possible . thank you for your expertise that legal analyst jennifer pretend thanks for coming on to the show. thank you a new report by both created news times president told his former lawyer not to tell the truth to congress want to tell the story after this break.
5:18 pm
5:19 pm
question. welcome back to the program u.s. president on trump has slammed a new report by buzz feed news that claims trump instructed his former lawyer michael cohen to lie to congress white house press secretary. says no credibility should be given to those claims that's absolutely ridiculous i think that the president's outside counsel addressed this best and said in a statement earlier today is categorically false the report has created a minor sensation in the media but there is some concern about the author's credibility a correspondent in washington dan cohen takes up the story buzz feed news released
5:20 pm
a major report alleging that u.s. president donald trump has received ten personal updates from michael cohen and encouraged planned meetings with russian president vladimir putin. president donald trump directed his longtime attorney michael cohen to lie to congress according to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter and even as trump told the public he had no business deals with russia the sources said trump and his children if the and donald trump jr received regular detailed updates about the real estate development from cohen whom they put in charge of the project a michael cohen is the former lawyer of donald trump he was sentenced to thirty six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to lying to congress about the trump tower plan he's also admitted to campaign finance violations cash t.v.
5:21 pm
agents and thanks fraud and of course he's a key figure in investigation of where the so-called russian collusion probe of this report is being treated as a bombshell president trump is facing new scrutiny today over a report that he told his personal attorney to lie to congress about his business dealings with russia we have breaking news tonight on the russia investigation here's what buzz feed news is reporting that ice bombshell report coming from buzz feed news president trump directed his attorney to lie to congress about the moscow tower project congressional democrats calling for an immediate investigation declaring the trial must be impeached if the story is true the two journalists wrote in their article that they didn't actually see the court documents or any evidence that they base their reporting on rather they were briefed by two anonymous law enforcement officials and jason leopold that one of the authors of this buzz feed article has a history of fabricating sources back in two thousand and two he had an article
5:22 pm
retracted on salon dot com alleging that thomas white who was then the secretary of the army attempted to cover up massive losses of the energy giant enron while he was an executive there and in two thousand and six leopold reported that coral rove who is a senior advisor. president bush told him and other officials that he was going to be indicted in the case of the former cia agent valerie plame rove was never indicted and the story fell apart that's just a small sample in a long career of this kind of chicanery regarding the cohen story today leopold told m.s.n. b c that he had actually seen the evidence showing that trump instructed michael cohen to lie to congress and it's a total contradiction to what's written in the article and what his co-author has said i don't think that we've said that we haven't. but i will say that i'm very confident that your colleague said on c.n.n. this morning that you were briefed on these documents we've been i'll just say that
5:23 pm
we we've seen documents we've been briefed on documents and we're very confident in our reporting despite these discrepancies this story being based on anonymous sources and leopold's history of journalistic malpractise we've seen some democrats promise that they will investigate the report calling the allegations against trump quote among the most serious to date some have even gone so far as to call for president trump's impeachment so we'll have to see how this one pans out. as far as live to new york to discuss this issue with that line a legal and media analyst coming into the program now let's look at your opinion how believable you think this report is especially since it's all things game different answers as to whether they had any actual evidence. how how believable none. sake but this is so many moving parts to this
5:24 pm
michael cohen convicted of lying convicted of lying to congress convicted of a variety of crimes he is the subject of the story written by two people who may or may not have. actually review the evidence that they actually said they reviewed in the story involving a convicted liar that nobody is now believing especially in view of the rather sordid history of one of the authors and as we do this did you hear that one important part and by the way these are the folks who hate the name fake news they report that a bombshell has hit a bombshell story out a bombshell from a man convicted of lying to two rather dubious reporters from a rather dubious website and yet this is the bombshell because it
5:25 pm
goes to show you any information any bit of data any hint insinuation it doesn't matter hearsay double history or say that shows in any way the president guilty of anything at any time they're going to run with that because true a a story is a bombshell now what is the most important. and i think this is the most critical here in this country is the sound of crickets of nobody screaming and yelling how can this happen what happened to journalistic ethics who is watching the watchdog who is investigating what is buzz feed doing how dare these people what standards are being involved you know we always talk about different applications that we can use to ferret out russian collusion and russian bias but when it comes
5:26 pm
to something that is patently and obviously a case of very serious journalistic ethics nobody's saying anything about it crickets that's the part that i find absolutely astounding lie no obviously we haven't gotten vamose time but there seems to be this seems to be another trigger a new push in the media for donald trump's impeachment are there any grounds to support this now. you know anything. everything can incite a renewed call for his impeachment remember though in the united states under the constitution under article one of the constitution you impeach the president but to remove him to remove it need a super majority sixty seven percent of the votes in the senate which they don't have no matter what the articles of impeachment are keep this in mind ok
5:27 pm
line to the senate for either trial they don't have. a timeline a legal and media analyst old was always a lot to say thank you ok it's all unease from sean thomas will take over the top of the hour with more but in the meantime please stay tuned for politicking which is up next. next as a national survival guide. let's learn about let's say i'm a so i get your i'm greased on face of the fight. thank you for. the story that's right. that's slavery.
5:28 pm
nancy pelosi pulls a d.c. power move by dissident vibing donald trump from delivering his state of the union address to congress is this a winning move the democrats will take a look at that on this edition. the politicking on larry king on wednesday house speaker nancy pelosi suggested that president trump reschedule or submitted in writing his flan state of the union address kegel for later this month in her disinvite the speaker site strains to security preparations caused by the partial government shutdown republicans were quick to blast palosi as move as petty politics what happens now and will move back
5:29 pm
fire or help the democratic party let's start there with former democratic representative elizabeth holtzman once the youngest female member of congress she served four terms as democratic congresswoman from new york she was also a member of the house. that investigated the role of president nixon in the want to get scandal and voted to impeach him her latest book is the case for in teaching trump she joins me from new york elizabeth thanks so much what do you make of the palosi i did to disinvite donald trump. well i don't know that she disinvited him what she said was that this is not the right time is and that he should consider rescheduling his state of the union when we get back to normalcy i mean this is a very abnormal time the god part of the government is shut down eight hundred
5:30 pm
thousand americans are not getting their paycheck millions more americans are suffering because of the absence of those paychecks so the president can't treat the situation as normal what is the state of the union is totally abnormal at this moment so i think she's perfectly right and she pointed out you know many presidents up to the time of woodrow wilson submitted most of the presence or not all of them submitted this state of the union message in writing so i think that for the president to think that this is. time is normal that these in normal times he's just wrong he doesn't understand the pain that americans are feeling what do you think is going to happen oh i think he's he doesn't yet understand the pain that people feel. he's is a very cruel person it turns out.
