will if i have to go naked i'll go naked on foot by car by motorcycle and it must be very clear to the world and to this regime that nobody will take part in this fake dialogue while kwaito is announcement true tens of thousands onto the streets of the venice wieland capital and also triggered demonstrations in support of much euro during the week twenty people were reported killed in the turmoil and a further five hundred to arrested caracas based journalists norris are got filed this report. this is being received in iraq as with both a joy and rejection from both parties and both sides of supporters we are standing right now in our studios in assembly as supporting one white dove and of course some of the national assembly congress men but of course we want to hear the voices of the people who support and the people who reject the is calling for elections and this war in the know if one were to situation never before experienced in

venezuela so people are coming out because this is us denise rounds it's not the political parties it's not the national assembly it's the venezuelans who are coming out and fighting for what we want. the opposition will not return because we support our president for all the right reasons for our mission for our homes for our children they will not come back oh the party this and this and that's coloring buys that matter here is the key thing is to save venice and that is what we are doing where are you in the fight here this is a government of social justice our country has many major oil resources natural wealth and there are many interests that want to get their hands on it given these obstacles the governments of chavez and nama do have made significant progress another updates to bring to put in the last number of hours or so nicolas maduro has asked the european union to drop its for
9:05 am
a fresh election in venice while another says the bloc earlier said it would officially recognize wedo as the country's leader if another vote is not called the u.s. also urged the united nations to recognize the self-proclaimed interim president but the un security council last year by the sea it failed to reach a consensus appeared to urge all nations to support the democratic aspirations of the venezuelan people get a big one of you can tell me in which article and which provision of the united nations charter you can find a legal basis that is so. it was just this meeting which we've been forced to attend is yet another element of us regime change strategy either you stand with the forces of freedom or you're in league with his male united states is that. the . it is in advance it's in the vanguard of the coup d'état it is in the order how indeed can any self respecting government possibly justifies
9:06 am
supporting the poisonous regime of the nation destroying missed in the doura if anything does represent a threat to peace it is the shameless and aggressive actions of the united states and their allies this discussion in the council is about the right of the venezuelan people to direct their own internal affairs and choose the future of their own country democratically just speaking there that was donald trump's controversial chief of u.s. policy on venice wheeler elliott abrams served in foreign policy departments under presidents reagan and bush as well he was twice convicted of the save in congress over the arming of nicaraguan rebels and he's linked to a coup attempt in venice wheeler back in two thousand and two against then leader hugo chavez. of venezuela president nicolas maduro is accusing us of meddling in his country's internal affairs and it is not the first time that washington has faced such accusations rot gustier weather events in the south american nation are

following a tried and tested for. starting an uprising revolution is simple enough sir comes the pressure sanctions built up gradually first it was a few officials and then they sanctioned the president and state companies and the government itself through deal and word they helped choke then they into a crisis we are awaiting all of our policy options as to what can we do to career. eight change of conditions were either liberal decides he doesn't have a future or we can return. the government processes to their constitution we are not going to tolerate the dictatorship he's trying to create if venezuelan people deserve better than what the regime of nicolas maduro offers them now that the country and people are in economic misery and you vilified its leaders because he
9:08 am
wrote like thirty five year old u.s. educated head of the national assembly which as it turns out the united states has been quietly assisting financially and helping for a while who would have thought. by now you should have caused enough trouble problems on top of everything out starforce even the app a little into the streets the more noise the better and you mustn't let things calm down keep shouting keep agitating and. oh. you're going. in the and the chaos the confusion comes
9:09 am
a special moment when lul breaks down when loyalties crumble when brother turns on brother in the street partly thanks to you that moment do something crazy like denounce the government proclaim a new i'm elected president. i'm mike pence the vice president of the united states the united states supports the courageous decision by one god or the president of your national assembly to assert that body's constitutional powers declare madeira or your serp are and call for the establishment of a transitional government now is the time for more direct action to get all your friends on board. recognizes longway do is the president of venezuela and we assist on transition to democracy to liberate the venezuelan people from the dictator brazil has just issued a note recognizing one why do as venezuela's president. will support this recession
9:10 am
in a democracy alongside other countries and the lima group we recognize and express our full support for the president of venezuela seemed by the president at the national assembly. it is clear that nicolas maduro is not the legitimate leader of venezuela so the united kingdom believes that. is the right person to take venezuela forward you see if your country just so happens to be in the americas you're in washington's hemisphere which it seems justifies meddling interfering and changing governments at will but just to be sure bully them let them know that if you don't get what you want you'll beat the lights out of them and take what you want. without considering anything but all options are on the day that your theory which is all options always all options and there you go sparking uprisings one
9:11 am
o one now this may all take some practice tweak here or there but it works tried and tested time and time again but the consequences are a whole other story. right because the whole former u.s. congressman ron paul told us there is a certain irony in washington's claim to be fighting for democracy in venezuela i think it's going to end up in violence and we could have a civil war and i would think even the people that might not like manure or shouldn't like settling the dispute is internal issue they should settle it and i think it is rather ironic for our government to say that they want to take care of venezuela because they're not democratic and we have to take care of it by you know authoritarian approach of us installing a president having a coup and threaten them with military violent because because they're not democratic enough i would hardly say that our position is very democratic you know
9:12 am
and what's happened in syria what has happened earlier on with iraq and afghanistan and libya i mean every time we go in and say well you need help you need to be american eyes you need to know our good values and and we want you to learn what democracy is all about and we'll give you a little money too if you obey us and i'm sure there's some harm done by her oh and others but where is it our job where do we get the moral authority to be the decider. following an eleventh consecutive weekend of yellow vests protests which have been wreaking havoc across france a country protest movement appears to be gaining momentum in the parlous let's go live now to our friends correspondent charlotte to minsky in the capital charlotte do indeed tell us about these new red scarf protests. that's right this precious moving schools who said this which translates as she said that the reds
9:13 am
still lost they yell at the and she leaves you in the empty yellow that's some degree well they saying is they're unhappy with the file it's been seen during this movement just this year the jewels the yellow vest since november seventh. i just wanted to get a sense of just how many people of turned out for this protest today this protest to say that they food democracy they're against the violence they're against it's rights and they're here to describe themselves to show that they are the silent majority many people have said that they want their voices to be heard and they want a democracy to be respected there are happy with not just the violence occurred in the yellow vest movement but also the destruction of monuments to frogs let's not forget back in december the octogenarian for the symbols of the republic was trashed it was vandalized by some of the sioux cool to the heart of that yellow vest movement and some of the people here say they also yellow vests to people that
9:14 am
supported the movement at the beginning they wanted to see some change in france but they were unhappy with how it's progress and so they hit to get they've research into the streets and to meet people who know that they want the respect of the republic the respect of democracy to return many people wouldn't say that they proved present back when you know through the french government they prove the values of the french republic which are we know in the motor of liberty a galaxy and fraternity so one of the things that they're shouting is we're also people see with assistance to you so a big turnout for this first protest by the red scarfs here in paris today demanding that they the silent majority also and the values of the republic of frogs are respected charlotte devinsky giving us a sense of the streets of paris paris sunday on what is happening there thank you
9:15 am
charlotte. news continues here in our to international right after this. clin. so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy. let it be an arms race in this very dramatic to follow only closely and. i don't see how that strategy will be successful very critical time to sit down and talk. in the united states we proactively require brominated flame retardants to be put into furniture and marketing among other things and that's resulted in extremely
9:16 am
higher levels all those flame returns in the human bodies of americans as opposed to europeans and that ultimately has affected the cognitive outcomes of literally a generation of american children. sixty minutes into the program welcome back commemorations are being held this sunday in russia's northern capital of petersburg today marks seventy five years since the end of the siege of leningrad ripped the city for more than two years during the second world war president putin has laid flowers there at the memorial of the fall and soldier not before that a muslim parade was held in the city where two thousand military personnel marched
9:17 am
us the winter palace where they iconic hermitage museum is located all in the city's central square. spoke to some of the veterans of that experience to others to say. it was pure horror but we do. such patriots who didn't think the siege would last long i remember the day it was announced with thought that maybe in three months we will advance who believed in it until the very end the faith is what kept us alive i never thought about live in leningrad we can't believe in the end of the siege was nia. do you mean your book other than to me it was no childhood for me during the siege it was a horror that we young boys only survived because we were able to bear more suffering than the elderly i remember sometimes our relatives who died during the night the next morning would wake up next to a dead person that was our childhood i remember how during the most difficult period we would find endearing barrels and there'd be
9:18 am
a viscous residue at the bottom we boiled and ate it that's how we survived. the evacuation through this so-called road of life is one of the most memorable things from the sea i remember how the car driving behind us sank in the lake after being hit by a nazi bomb it was a horrible experience i have no positive memories from that time. when nazi germany besieged leningrad for eight hundred seventy two days believed to be one of the deadliest blockades in history more than a million people died mostly from starvation or cold the only route for supplies to reach the city was across a frozen lake called the road of life. well today january twenty seventh also marks international holocaust remembrance day right around the globe people are paying their respects remembering the victims of nazi atrocities in which some six million jewish people died however
9:19 am
a recent poll in the u.k. a suggests that a growing number of people are unaware of the holocaust or simply deny that it happened while to discuss this i'm joined on the program by a frame zero off the director of the it's really office for they seem on vice and tell center eastern european affairs we appreciate your take on this day the holocaust remembrance day of course a recent poll as we've been talking about it has suggested around two point six million britons are denying the holocaust that's the equivalent of one in twenty u.k. adults how shocked are you by that figure. think it's quite it's quite shocking and surprising. but that's not the only problematic figure in this in this survey in other words you have five percent to deny eight percent who are convinced that the numbers are exaggerated twenty percent think that the number is
9:20 am
less the number of victims is less than two million and forty five percent don't even know so i think you're combining. anti-semitism. with abysmal ignorance it is a startling number and it's not only the u.k. according to two other polls what are the consequences if fewer people are actually aware of the holocaust. well the basic idea behind holocaust education is that the tragedy that we call the holocaust has lessons for humanity. about the dangers of hatred the dangers of anti-semitism racism fascism and obviously we think that it's important that people study the holocaust to learn from that tragedy and to try that managed to prevent the recurrence of such a tragedy. when you look at that figure one in twenty u.k.
9:21 am
adults not believing that the holocaust actually took place at all what you put out it's not that it's not one one in twenty one in twenty year ok u k adults and two point six million britain right what do you really put it into a rise of nationalism across europe or at least an increase in not what what is your center find out. let's make one thing clear holocaust denial is simply a new form of anti-semitism the holocaust is the most documented tragedy in human history there are millions i repeat millions of documents that prove the crimes of the holocaust there's no basis for this denial it's totally absurd so why do people do it it's basically a new form of anti-semitism because imagine what would happen if it turns out that
9:22 am
the holocaust did not happen obviously that would be a very bad situation for the jewish people of the world. you know at the same time most people would be hard pushed to give factual details about other genocides today is also the twenty fifth anniversary of the occurrence in rwanda when millions of people died. when you look at such a thing could it be done a lot of this to simple lack of knowledge listen it's not only a question of knowledge it's also a question of terence you know when when the camps were liberated. in other words the camps in germany were liberated by the british and the americans and auschwitz was liberated by the russians and the world was exposed to the scope of nazi atrocities the phrase never again was coined and i'm sure the people who
9:23 am
coined that phrase had good intentions and were really determined that such a thing would never happen again but on the other hand so many tragedies have occurred since that and that the holocaust thing but they have some similar characteristics and the question to ask yourself and i ask myself is how is that possible after the horrors of the holocaust were exposed and i think that one of the answers or one of the fact is that it's very important to take into account is the fact that the number of people responsible for these crimes who are brought to justice is not that large let's put it this way the percentage is not that large and i think when people today contemplate joining genocidal movements or islamic fundamentalist movements first question they ask themselves is will i be caught what will happen if i'll be court will be held accountable and if you look at the figures for the people involved the holocaust a relatively small percentage of the people who are responsible for these crimes
9:24 am
were actually put on trial unpunished. how did council society actually go about their for changing the fuse of people who. actually deny that this happened that six million jews were killed in the holocaust well it has to take place on two different levels one level is the level of leadership that the leaders of the world the leading political leaders in every country have to make clear that this is a fact that this happened and this has very important consequences for their country as well and then there's the question of the educational systems in other words this is subject that has to be taught in the school curriculum at the proper age and to be done effectively and with the best technological and other educational aids you feel that's not happening in schools enough just finally that listen there's no question that it's happening in many schools all over the world
9:25 am
and there's someone who gives lectures at yad vashem the israeli national memorial to hundreds of teachers every year who come from all over the world to teach the holocaust there's no question that some very excellent holocaust education is taking place but it's almost impossible to reach everybody and the figures that you presented from this survey about the u.k. clearly show that on a supposed you know when you look at those figures it's at the younger generation simply being ignorant by this airframe because there's a lot of things when you look into details about history they simply do not know the facts of and this is something that needs to be pressed home particularly younger stage in education would you agree with that. this in it should not be pressed to youngest age that's a different problem than others it has to be started in the let's say eighth grade or tenth grades and that but not before that no you don't want to scare these kids
9:26 am
at their minds and it's not appropriate so disaster be done in a proper mad at the bright age in the right way and this is a this is really a challenge a tremendous challenge to the educational systems countries all over the world but i have to say that many people are taking up this challenge and many people are doing an excellent job that's why many people who are knowledgeable about the holocaust by the way one thing that's not clear is the ages of those people who deny the holocaust the right the ages of people who think who are not sure that six million were murdered or people underestimate said or that's not clear from the survey yeah thank you so much for coming today on the program i'm explaining a lot on the state holocaust memorial day we've been speaking to a frame zuroff director of the it's really office for they seem on vice and center in eastern european but first go ahead your last your last thought let me allow me
9:27 am
