to the world and to this regime that nobody will take part in this fake dialogue. god it was addressed through tens of thousands onto the streets of the venezuelan capital but also triggered demonstrations in support of madeira twenty people are reported to have been killed in the turmoil and a further five hundred were arrested cut across space journalist has this report is being received in iraq as with both a joy and rejection from both parties and both sides of supporters we are standing right now in our studios in assembly supporting one white doe and of course some of the national assembly congressmen but of course we want to hear the voices of the people who support and the people who reject the is calling for elections and this war in one white guilt ridden situation never before experienced in venezuela so people are coming out because this is us the new surrounds it's not the political

parties it's not the national assembly it's the venezuelans who are coming out and fighting for what we want. the opposition will not return because we support our president for all the right reasons for our mission for our homes for our children they will not come back all the partisan this and that's coloring buys that matter here the key think is to save venice and that is what we are doing where starting the fight in. this is a government of social justice our country has many major oil resources natural wealth and there are many interests that want to get their hands on it given these obstacles the governments of chavez unama doura have made significant progress the international community is also split over that question of materials in the us and i see the us canada and most south american states have now recognized dollars venezuela's interim president a number of other states though including russia china and turkey have lent their

backing to president nicolas maduro they've criticized what they see as a coup attempt there's no end in sight to the investment in venezuela as another group of states. europe that issued an ultimatum to. there that he used to play as germany spain france the u.k. as well have warned that if elections are called within eight days they will officially recognize quadro as the country's leader and as well as foreign minister has ridiculed the demand dismissing it as almost childlike on saturday tensions over the crisis while on full display at an emergency u.n. security council meeting here to urge all nations to support the democratic aspirations of the venezuelan people get to be one of you can tell me in which article and which provision of the united nations charter you can find the legal basis for this program nation it was just this meeting which we've been forced to attend is yet another element of us regime change strategy either you stand with the forces of freedom or you're in league with his me i'm the united states is that

. the. it is in advance it's in the vanguard of that could it it is the ordinary how indeed can any self respecting government possibly justifies supporting the poisonous regime of the nation destroying missed in the doura if anything does represent a threat to peace it is the shameless and aggressive actions of the united states and their allies this discussion in the council is about the right of the venezuelan people to direct their own internal of peers and choose the future of their own country democratically. for us to live to gabriel hedlund an expert on american and latin american studies thanks for joining us on the program today just want to ask you about that ultimatum issued by some of those e.u. states to saying that if elections are about within eight or seven disposed days now are they going to recognize as president assuming just for
3:07 pm
a second those elections are called and say my dear oh does where i mean are they even likely to recognize those elections or is there really no win win situation for the venezuelan government. i think it would depend on what the conditions for election were there were elections that were held in may last year and there are some very major critiques level that as i think are valid in particular the banning of leading opposition candidates in the election unlike the past couple of elections seem like it was probably technically fair but on a very uneven playing field i think that there would have to be a lot of credibility there would have to be observers and there'd have to be probably a entirely new system within venezuela so there's a lot of hurdles but if the government were to call for a new election that would certainly change the game in some major ways and i think it was probably encouraged as it seems to have been by international actors the government on the other hand. would stand to lose
3:08 pm
a lot in korean paralyzation i think the population of venizelos not the time and tomorrow so there's a lot of uncertainty or there have been calls for compromise a negotiation almost sides to avoid an escalation to bloodshed but the the self-proclaimed president has so far been quite reluctant to and talks and negotiations with what do i do when i what i. i would imagine that the u.s. which is in very close communication with them by all accounts and seems to really be having a close to the director role in the process doesn't want him to do that publicly although it seems like behind the scenes or you know it's more or less openly guy though has met with some. ministration officials even though these publicly rejected meeting with him self so it's hard to know how much of that is sort of rhetorical posturing and how much of it is the sort of political opposition where he's not going to negotiate whatsoever speaking i'm going to own particular the
3:09 pm
government in the present conjuncture has initiated more willingness to negotiate. and so far that hasn't taken a formal path but i think there are behind the scenes conversations happening. the u.s. does have a history of intervene intervention does that in south america from the election rigging attempting coups you know bullets into action as well and trump has said all options are all the table these were up to them to rule out a military option here. obviously looking. now and hopefully that's something that that won't happen for all sides but do you think that could be a possibility here of some sort of use of force. it can't be discounted given the statements from trump and from a ministration official live and try ministration at a very high level saying that that is a possibility and as you said the us does have a law on. supporting overt and covertly supporting military action in
3:10 pm
pressuring on governments within latin america the coup in chile be an example of going back as well in two thousand to other incredible brazil so we're not talking about the distant past we're talking about pretty recent events which the us. directly played a role in or certainly supported so all of that means that i think that it can be discounted but at the moment i don't think it's the most likely scenario because of the sort of support of the military form a dearth of publicly if that were to go away i think that there would be more uncertainty and more possibility for things moving forward. the u.s. has said it's involved to help distressed venezuelans concerned about democracy and prosperity in the country as well how much of an impact though has the sanctions had on the venezuelan public i mean surely if there is a concern about the well being of ordinary venezuelans easing some sort of sanctions might be a step towards then that. you know i think that's literally true and actually the
3:11 pm
us claiming to care about the well being of ordinary gun it's limits a very hard to believe and that's not to defend them and do it in the streets and i think that they have profound responsibility for the suffering that has gone on and they have not been the sorts of actions that they need to but in the last eighteen months in particular u.s. sanctions have had a very devastating of. the government of venezuela and the ability to have resources. efficiently prevented the government from incurring. foreign law other than a few countries russia china and being some of the main countries were and as well has been able to do that because of their inability to incur debt there's been a dramatic escalation of the crisis and this is actually something that the u.s. government has admitted those are rational and for in november of last year where the u.s. government is very specifically that there are n.g.o.s and betters the telling us
3:12 pm
that this is going to harm the people and that there are going to be negative attacks of our own sanctions and there's very little doubt that there has been very serious negative attacks already so i think that the u.s. doesn't have any sort of. ground to stand on when they say that we care about the venezuelan people as long as the sanctions regime close what about the wider region here i mean what role about as well as neighbors playing in all of this a lot of them have recognized the interim leader as well over the last couple of days i mean could they help deescalate this crisis somehow. well i think the wider region is a really crucial thing to keep in mind and i think there's a couple countries that seem to be playing a positive role mexico and what it why so much supporting them in their own ministration as refusing to recognize. and calling for dialogue and negotiation between the government i think that anyone who really cares about venezuela should be supportive of those sorts of threats but many other countries in the in the region argentina or colombia surely have recognized and
3:13 pm
a very important reason for that is that a lot of those countries not all of them but a lot of them have left or center a lot of governments a few years ago and now have right wing conservative governments which are very close to the u.s. and so the right weren't turning within the region which the u.s. has been encouraging and making out and to some extent is a major factor in the current crisis and venezuela has been in the u.s. as crosshairs for two and really trying to get rid of first a child as an illustration then the majority ministration was frustrated by the left and center left governments that were in power throughout the region until a few years ago and the rightward shift has led to a very different regional context which i think the u.s. is trying with some success to take advantage of. an expert on american and latin american studies on that venezuelan crisis. eleventh consecutive weekend of yellow vest demonstrations caused havoc in cities
3:14 pm

want a democracy to be respected there are happy with not just the violence occurred in the yellow vests movement but also in the. struction monuments to frank sesno for get back in december the off the tree on one of the some moons of the republic was trashed it was vandalized by some of the so cool to suggs less of a whole lot of that yellow vest movement and some of the people here say they also yellow vests to people that supported the movement at the beginning they want to see some change in france but there are unhappy with how it's progress and so they hate to get their voice out into the streets and to meet people who know that they won't the respect of the republic the respect of democracy to return many people wouldn't say that their true present not going you know through the french government they prove the values of the french republic which all we know in the moto of liberty a galaxy and fraternity say one of the things that they're shouting is we're all so

this is a happy word says make america great again they now call it the maggot act this is a kook klux klan hoot they used to terrorize freed african-americans and those different shapes eras purposes however this make america great again is just as maddening and frustrating and triggering for me to look at as a k.k.k. hood. many people have called donald trump of filthy racist in the past what's up with this new wave of hat hate now even though something that's now compared to the k.k.k. fashion has been worn by african-americans or the l.g.b. t.q. community well just remember that white teenagers versus native american vets situation the viral video sweeping the internet a mob of mag out wearing high school students running in native american chanting in drumming so much and the story was twisted as we learned from videos that

whose voices matter the red mark a hat is the new white hood without white boys being able to empathize with other people humanity will continue to destroy itself. and so it's probably only natural that americans wearing maggots have gotten themselves in trouble. in the first. point and i get your hand if you do your my hand i don't feel. like. yeah. yeah so who knows how far that kind of bullying may get soon some of the media have tried very hard to make you associate mr trump with the k.k.k. now with this hat situation it must have become a much easier job that's the news for this from the myself thanks for staying with
