over the last decade a large number of children were born without limbs but the government report on the probable causes we went to meet some of those affected i want to know where she was born like that because mothers blame themselves we think that it may come from us or that we did something wrong. and facebook finds itself and brawled in fresh controversy this time paying uses including teenagers almost unfettered access to the data on their phones. it's eleven o'clock here in moscow and you're watching international live from last year with me to do to welcome to the program. the european union is helping to turn up the heat on the phone as well in president nicolas maduro on thursday it lent its full support to the crisis stricken country's opposition leader recognizing him . de facto head of state the foreign policy chief outlined

a series of punitive status that might be taken. out of government caracas peter reports federica mockery of the e.u. high representative for foreign affairs has announced that the european union is setting up what they call an international contact group on venezuela this isn't going to be any kind of official mediation in the crisis there but it is essentially going to be a talking shop including in the states as well as latin american partners who are going to come together to try and continue the dialogue and make sure that venezuela can sort out the problems it faces well through the mechanisms of the venezuelan constitution however at the same time as federica mockery and he was announcing also you said that we could expect further sanctions for me you member states on venezuela those sanctions of course they would target the government be under sanctions targeted sanctions in place already that would be new unanimously

recently and. elements of sanctions might be considered by the ministers in the coming days if we would not see positive developments the european parliament also passed a resolution on venezuela on thursday in it they recognize one. the legitimate interim president of venezuela they also reject any violent means to try and solve the impasse and they support fully a proposal put forward by the u.n. secretary general for a full and independent investigation into deaths in venezuela we can hear what the european parliament say right now i mean the european parliament is the first european institution to do this nude asked member states to do the same as quickly as possible in order to ensure that we have a strong unified european position. the united kingdom germany and france had given nicolas maduro until monday to say he was going to organize fresh elections
3:04 pm
otherwise they would throw their support behind one door well it does seem almost certain that that's going to happen now particularly when we hear from nicolas maduro that he has no intention of stepping aside no intention of calling elections in fact he says the next elections in his country they'll be in twenty twenty five when his current term is set to come to an end there is some international support for nicolas maduro though the african union china turkey and russia of all said that they're against this international push for the new summit but in the classroom now he is not a self-proclaimed president external forces declared him as the president are from different types of support including financial technical political and moral venezuela has problems which should be solved but there is no doubt that the scenario aimed at preventing sides from dialogue comes from abroad. as the situation continues in venezuela the more pressure that is put on nicolas maduro

the more he says he's going absolutely nowhere daniel mcadams from the ron paul institute targeting police is incapable of acting independently of the u.s. . unfortunate the e.u. shows that it's incapable of taking an independent foreign policy they've made a bunch of noises about continuing to do business with iran despite the fact that the u.s. unilaterally illegally pulled out of the p five plus one deal and once again there are lining up behind washington's foreign policy maybe they've been promised some of the spoils john bolton the other day said openly an explicitly u.s. companies should go into venezuela and take the oil maybe they'll give a few table scraps to the europeans as well so that's what it would say that this is the largest oil reserves in the world so you can imagine how many hands in the us in the e.u. are rubbing themselves together with glee and dissipating the windfall profits. several hours ago venezuela's self declared interim president said on twitter and

police who at his home. added that he held nicholas meant to responsible for his family's well being the authorities have issued a statement calling the claim totally false the tensions between the government and the opposition when looked at the competing narratives running offense in the country. venezuela is a country of two realities so stark so profound the differences in opinion in one reality president maduro is trying to put down a rebellion stop an upstart usurper one why do he's trying to prevent mutiny in the army even as we hear calls on c.n.n. to supply rebels with weapons and he's afraid trump has ordered him killed no doubt trump gave an order to kill me he told the colombian governments the colombian mafia to kill me if something happens to me one day donald trump and the
3:07 pm
colombian president will be responsible there is also a parallel reality born in no small part thanks to the united states first chavez now my duro have long been a thorn in washington side in this reality go i do know is the real president he is america's candid it trump congratulated him on becoming president they discuss what to do with the former dictator. they discuss business politics he has america's blessing and its protection i reiterate that the united states will hold venezuelan security forces responsible for the safety of all u.s. diplomatic personnel the national assembly and president going to any violence against these groups would signify a grave assault on the rule of law it will be met with a significant response. sure now with the guarantee of safety of invulnerability

mystic why do we stood no time before beginning to issue orders soldiers of venezuela today i give you an order don't shoot the venezuelan people don't shoot those who are in a clear and constitutional way have been defending your family your people your work your way of life today soldiers of venezuela i give you an order don't repress peaceful demonstrations like before such familiar scenes we see this all over the world palestinians protesting in the occupied territories the yellow vests in france catalan separatists in spain protesters in the u.s. but when police bully beat and arrest in those countries that's fine and dandy when they do it in venezuela at suppression of democracy an attack on the free world. is not the democratically elected president of the tramples democracy human rights

and rule of law good for new start is linked with the new democratic institution in the country namely the nationalist sounding in its president hu on guide dog that's why together with the e.u. we have offered alkalinity bill support. for the us why do is the cake sweetened bleier bowl but wait is icing on top those agreements that have not been recognized by the national assembly are illegal we will not recognize illegal agreements china has to understand that and russia has to understand that two realities two presidents two governments to venezuela's of course it's cattle to continue like this a house divided cattle stand then surely these two realities will merge let's just hope it will be through civil war. the divisions in venezuela have been on full display this day protests have been continuing both in support of

and in opposition to president nicolas with the opposition and demanding new elections and the transfer of power pro-government demonstrators say they want to see the constitution upheld political analyst use of fire him told us that the pressure from the international community is also adding to the volatility it's very important to get the support of russia china turkey and many other countries as well for him so his people understand that there is international support that they're not that these countries are not going to let the democratically elected president be removed by undemocratic means or a coup when you look at what's going on in venezuela we're only one or two small events from it turning into a syria now i hear me mention vietnam but i think it's a lot closer to what happened in syria you look at the opposition defected soldiers from the c.n.n. report requesting arms from trump well i mean that sounds very similar to what

happens in two thousand and eleven when obama started the army people. problems germany and the u.k. are propping ways to swerve u.s. sanctions on trading with the wrong this says they announce the launch of a transaction channel which has been backed by the foreign policy chief. european union's fully behind the full implementation of the un the simple reasons that we see it is working through the reports now by the way i want to run is fully compliant with its healthy commitment and we believe this is a key element of our security in the region the new payment system called the instrument in support of trade exchanges or in stacks is going to be a non-dollar mechanism it will be based in paris and managed by the former director of germany's comet's bank where the u.k. will head up a supervisory board as of now in stocks is expected to focus mainly on food and medical exports to iran but it could expand in the future. last year europe opposed

america's decision to withdraw from the twenty fifty and deal with iran and imply the sanctions would be lifted in exchange for turan limiting its nuclear program but independent journalists knew if they believed few. to go against washington's pressure it will be a trickle of companies daring do that it's much easier for chinese companies or for russian companies to close deals to to make deals with the rom the european sa ask your. in an incredible way the company if you talk to them they are afraid of being in the storm with the americans trying to make an example because that's what washington is going to do for example they will certainly pick up a few examples and be harsh on them and mention it in press releases and in public campaign so that's very dangerous for european companies i don't know if anybody will dare go with the sticks. thousands of facebook

people who chose to participate in this market research program routines all of them with signed parental consent forms facebook even asked users to screenshot their amazon orders page parental consent was also set of being easily avoided in the entire process journalist eric gross says a lot of people don't understand what access to such data actually means. but think it's most people probably would find it unethical because generally kids are not going to understand what they're signing up for most people don't know what they sign up for whenever they sign the terms of service and even if facebook is saying i'm giving twenty bucks or whatever they're handing out i don't think most people really understand how metadata and their digital footprint tells a lot about who they are as a person about where they go to just about their entire life and i'm not sure everybody really understands that when you sign up for facebook or any of these social media companies or any web site really when you click i agree without reading the terms of service and particularly with apps on smartphones most people

don't understand what they're giving companies permission to do and especially when it relates to the children. according to a recent poll the popularity of facebook among american teenagers has been hit by a twenty percentage point decrease since twenty fifteen there it goes again says the social networking behave with is going to great lengths to retain its market share. it is obvious that facebook is losing support in favor among the younger generations the younger millennial is in generations e is some people call them where most of them are using things like instagram which facebook also owns and things like snapchat and other platforms facebook is kind of seen like the older thing for the fact the parents and the grandparents i think what facebook is trying to do is to buy up other platforms like they bought instagram they bought what's up there the company that runs facebook mark zuckerberg and his team i don't think whether or not facebook the social network disappears i don't think they're going to go any where they're planning to invest and make sure that they have their hands in all the future social networks. paris

in the u.k. have states a protest outside a school in the city of birmingham of a what they are calling the promotion l.g.b. t.v. rights and its relationship education program some parents have even taken the children out of school in demonstration which is illegal in britain a petition was also started against a problem called no outsiders with leaflets being handed out near the school and draw people's attention to their cause here's how some of the parents have reacted . children have been told it's ok to be gay yet ninety eight percent of children in this school are muslim my little girl is four she's in reception and she came home asking me if it's ok to be a boy instead of her girl and has dressed up in her brother's clothes she's four years old i respect all religions but why should such shroud to be taught to primary school age children so out of control the school the sister had teacher who
3:17 pm
was behind the project believe the educational program is a way of reducing the risk of radicalization his website state that helps children to adapt to life in modern britain and celebrates diversity into society. life to mohammad saffi chief executive of the ramadan foundation and peter tatchell human rights campaigner and director of the peter tatchell foundation thanks both for coming on to the program to discuss this let's start going to ask you both the same question to begin a movie start with you peter is it right to take your child out of school in protest over them learning about same sex relationships and is that not detrimental to their education overall. well first thing to say is that this school and indeed no school anywhere in england is teaching a new primary school anywhere in and is teaching young people about sex primary teaching is about love and relationships it's about love coming in different forms
3:18 pm
that two woman can love each other two men can love each other and a man or woman can love each other so it's all about love it's not about sex and furthermore none of these schools are teaching or promoting homosexuality there's no promotion of any kind of search or intention it's all about love and relationships and i would have thought that that a value that parents who are muslim christian hindu or atheist would want their children to learn love is the most important thing now to address your question i think it is bad for kids were taken out of school because obviously that affects not just this issue but also their learning about math history english all the other subjects that they will be there will be learning in school and i think you know parents need to understand this is a cation program is designed to stop bullying it's designed to encourage acceptance and understanding not necessarily you know that you personally believe in same sex
3:19 pm
relations but you have a live in that live attitude and if kids are going to get on the playground they need to accept difference and you know muslim people are different from others but that doesn't make prejudiced against them right and i find it very strange upsetting that muslim some muslim people who know the hate and pain that they have suffered because of their faith would not wish to challenge other forms of hate and prejudice. you've heard what peter has to say and what do you think about this all has taken the children out of school as well. if i could just had a final point i think you're absolutely right peter. when the muslim community suffers islam for beer and racism and xenophobia then it's absolute essential apollo's to stand by it the. community i've gained bigotry against or more for beer and against hatred and i've done my whole life i'll continue to do that i think the
3:20 pm
issue here is not so much about what he's been teaching i think if you listen to what the school says if you listen to a parent so there's miscommunication there's into some sense propaganda or both sides if i miss sort of inflame the situation if he saw things to happen in school where education is teaching about how differences in this country are very very important and we should respect people we should accept people who are different as peter said rightly it doesn't mean that you accept homosexuality but you accept that there are gay people in this country as they have every right to love every right to live in this country to you know live their lives for example as any other citizen in this country so i think it's to do with miscommunication that you know i don't form the materials i've read it's not about promoting sex but it is about
3:21 pm
promoting. you know a certain thought process in regards to sexuality and i think that is something which. it's difficult for people to accept it within the muslim community i accept that but we've got to be outward looking insane been able to say well you can have your personal views about any particular thing but don't you dare stand. aside and watch bigotry and xenophobia normal for b. and i think that's very very the vast majority of muslims you will speak to or pour before via an op or discrimination against gay people because we live every day we live that discrimination every day so how could we not stand with our brothers and sisters in the community well mohammed give our you've asked our. haven't you because those parents weren't standing alongside were they they were objecting and what kind of message you know apart from the fact that it's against the law to take their children out of school what kind of message does that give to the children.
3:22 pm
well i think the message is quite clear the school should have done some outreach work they should have done some preparation and have those conversations not rather than being reactive reacting to some of the complaints made by some of the parents what the should be doing is reaching out to those parents telling them about what's happening building the relationship so when those material is being taught and promoted in those schools it's done with the full knowledge of the parents as i said if it's a parent promoting sex in four primary school children why this had to section all the sexual then i'll be listening to the parents i'm against are primary school children but if it's a parent acceptance if it's about tackling discrimination and homophobia and you stumble for beer then actually that is something which i support peter if around if we look at you know the parents point of view of peter if there are ninety percent of the school students are from muslim families should there be more consideration towards their faith considering it was obviously angered
3:23 pm
a lot of the parents that they were teaching this at all. well contrarily i would say that muslim parents should be more supportive of this education than any other parents and i say this because for young those being gay bisexual or transgender muslim people they suffer incredible ostracism and prejudice within some sections of their communities. homeless charities dealing with a youth report that one of the highest groups of people who come to them in desperation a young teenage muslim kids who've been thrown out of their homes by their parents because they're gay lesbian bisexual transgender if you look at the rates of suicide of depression anxiety it's extraordinarily high among young algebra two muslim people and a lot of young muslim people are also victims of hate crime because of their sexuality or because of their faith or race so i think it really is in the interest
3:24 pm
of parents who love their children to want their children to be protected against that reality because of course some muslim kids are l.g.b. t. you know it's not. i go to gay not clubs in london and i am surprised that some in some places a quarter of the entire people there appear to be of muslim heritage and i talk to lots of them and they all tell horror stories about what happened to them as kids and i'm sure that no parent would want their child to be bullied because they're either gay or suspected to be gay so this program is designed to counter that so these young kids can grow up and not have depression anxiety not self harm not be subjected to bullying and hate crime and i think that's a laudable thing for the school to do my place is just raised. it is just raised a problem within the muslim community community and the school is
3:25 pm
a british school isn't it where british law was. in use there. and he's obviously pointed out that there are you know because of that problem should should these parents be allowed to protest in that way and disagree with what the school obviously thinks is right for the children in you know attending. well as i said if you're introducing something new like this then surely the best way to accomplish is to get the parents onside educate them. to to promote what they're trying to do and what the real agenda is i speak to is a school governor in a school here in the northwest of england i'm very clear the parents have to understand the issues around bullying and harassment and discrimination and peter talks rightly so about some of the struggles of people from the muslim community have to have to deal with it but you know there is an ever increasing asian people
3:26 pm
and so that is something else that we've got to confront as well but peter is absolutely right we live in a society where it's ok to be it's ok to get married and i think you can hold a conservative viewpoint or you can order religious viewpoint against all my sexuality but you can also be respectful and tolerant towards people of that particular community nothing that's very very important actually i do think peter will agree with me and i would hope that when the nail bomber the far right near a bomb in one thousand nine hundred targeted it was the gay community there was talk of the audible dot com poppy and saw and it was a bengali muslim community in brick lane so actually we've got more in common together to communities than have what divides us and i really hoping that we can continue to build those links but yeah discrimination and harassment victimization of people who are from the algae beauty committees and acceptable in our society as his wrist ism and xenophobia towards muslims. peter. if we look at what some of the
3:27 pm
parents are arguing they're saying that the children are too young to be taught about relationships at this age is it necessary to be taught those subjects in primary school because also a wider issue is not really. well i will tell you a little story. i have. a muslim family who used to live next to. and they have a young girl who was at the time six and i was one time in the house they invited me to go visit them and one of the programs there were two guys who cuddled and kissed and the young muslim girl said oh isn't that sweet or don't they look happy and the parents were like a bit shocked but then we had a whole chat and the parents said yeah she's right she's right she's you know live in that live so i think there is there is change going on in the muslim community
3:28 pm
and i do think it's really important that. you know muslim parents. can hold their personal view but as she says not discriminate or not not not oppose efforts to counter discrimination and prejudice you know we live in this wonderful society it's got its flaws and imperfections but basically britain is a great place for people to live of different cultures and different backgrounds and we we try and get on together and we should get on together and i think that is as jeff says about respecting others who are different from ourselves ok we'll leave it there thank you gentlemen mohammed shafique chief executive ramadan foundation peter tatchell human rights campaigner thank you both for coming to the program to discuss this. i mean in france to seeking answers after a mysterious surge in children born with birth defects more than a thousand babies from french rural areas over the past twelve years have been born with missing limbs after an inconclusive probes some years back the government to
