8:30 pm
i'm tempted to. eighty five percent of global will you long for the old bridge eight point six percent market so thirty percent is one of your somewhat one hundred to five hundred three per circuit for sure and one rose to twenty thousand dollars. china is building two point one billion dollars industrial park but don't let the numbers will be. the only number you need to remember it was one show you know for a minute the one and only. good evening i'm trying now here to end your watching r t america's a special coverage of president donald trump the state of the union address we want to welcome all of our viewers across the country but also all over viewers across the globe who want
8:31 pm
to know what the president has planned for the year ahead now this will be the president tribes a second state of the union and has a third address to a joint body of congress now for the first time president trump will face a divided capital after democrats took control of the house of representatives last november now right now they are on the other side of the aisle preparing the rebuttal for president charms a prime time address argy correspondent sara months has day o'connor has been on capitol hill all day and joins us with the latest sarah. scotty democrats really look at ten on countering the president's message on key issues like immigration the economy and even the attempt for bipartisanship now senate minority leader chuck schumer delivered a scathing critique of trump's record on the economy and health care just earlier today now he's promoting a swift response from trump who has previously clashed with the new york democrat on several occasions trump speech is expected to focus not just on the heated
8:32 pm
debate over immigration and the border wall but really on a unifying call to action on a whole range of issues democrats have spent the day pretty much highlighting the disconnect between trump's roderick and his more controversial policies like we've seen this is even extended to the gas that they're bringing tonight to the capitol hill but the effort to counter the president's state of the union may really be suffering from some internal divides among the democrats the official democratic rebuttal to the state of the union is set to be delivered by a twenty eight hundred georgia gubernatorial candidate stacey abrams but many democrats and members of the media have really criticized senator bernie sanders for two choosing to deliver his own rebuttal just like he did last year and similarly presidential candidate in california senator paul harris drew some criticism for delivering her own up through rebuttal of sorts just before the president even speaks now this was just moments ago perhaps this is it is an effort
8:33 pm
to step away from issues that many democrats are trying to bring attention to like health care and the effects of that federal shutdown president is expected to devote much of his speech to foreign policy accomplishments and of course border security but even there we've seen it republicans very much divided many republican lawmakers voted just earlier today to rebuke the president's withdrawal of troops from syria and a number of senate republicans have come out warning that mr trump against using a national emergency declaration to build his border. but we'll be watching closely to see just how the president navigates these obstacles tonight and if he actually succeeds in his call for unity scotty. thank you now there is going to be a lot of conversation tonight that happens post the show and you can obviously catch it right here but while the president speaking there are certain topics that we know he's going to talk about and the number one which most americans care about is the economy it's been so since the day he was elected so we're sure that trump
8:34 pm
is going to talk about jobs the economy and trade so to break down all of those numbers we're joined by a former safety commissioner and host of boom bust here on our to america bar john thanks for joining us on this very historic night as the president is about to address a joint house of congress great to be with you as always scotty well with every president that you have things obviously that you want to brag about the president has been in office now for two years and he's no short of bragging not only on twitter but every opportunity gets what are some of those issues that you think the president is going to point out and say this is what i've done since i've been in office well the big thing that he touted a year ago you know in this in this place at this time actually we. talked about the tax cuts that had just been put into effect and were helping the economy help the economy for a long time and they're still helping the economy unfortunately they haven't really trickle down to help the lower income folks like was promised but still boost to the economy i know we'll talk about that a little bit later so i think number one he's going to talk about the tax cuts and
8:35 pm
the economy about the stock market he might also talk about the crime bill because that is the one other piece of legislation that he really got done with republicans and democrats there's been a lot of fighting amongst the parties here so what to see what if he does but i predict he will talk about crime bill as a bipartisan thing i sure hope he does well absolutely and the fact that that does have on the economy ok so let's talk about the topics that are going to be positive that we think that he's going to head so fort well three hundred four is a high number the average for the last three months which is a. better number to look at is two hundred seventy thousand that's still a really strong number the job participation that's just a little bit of the wage growth is something that hasn't got as much attention and something we talk about a lot while the stock market you can see here is gone down a little bit it's still been really gangbusters it's done very well health care was the best sector last year sort of ironic that that was the you know obamacare is
8:36 pm
going to be easy to fix while they are repealed obamacare they didn't put anything new in place so it sort of works for everybody but the health care sector itself the companies the pharma companies so that needs to be worked on but i predict we'll talk about it it needs to be talked about and then over there on the vague areas you know that we hope they're very bag these are going to be ones that we think he's going to get is that on our gaiety that is going on for all of the audience to look at i wrote an opinion editorial a way back when right after he's elected to this is what he should have done first republicans democrats agree on the need for this it's not a partisan issue it's not like gun control or abortion or anything else everybody agrees we've got a faulty and particularly in rural areas where they don't even have broadband they can't even watch scottie hughes are going on a bus with streaming that's a big issue and he should have done it first he didn't do that what he delayed what do you think holding up in congress even when you had about tax cuts more and i thought that he probably irons in the look and he really didn't care what was in
8:37 pm
the tax he said and he said this and it's public he said to the hill do whatever you can pass all sign it right and they did know that the republican members of congress said this is what we've been itching for that's what they want for and it's ok i don't probably them doing it i just wish he would have studied something that was bipartisan first then he could have gone for the tax cuts he probably would have got more democrats if he'd done that as opposed to having it be a more a party line vote absentee out of before you guys i think when the issue is that when this is passing through a lot of the republicans feel like the funding needs to come from the individual states from. from the and find on out the democrats said no it needed to come from the federal and front on down the source of funding is actually a lot of the times that where the disagreement has been the problem is i think when the republicans held both houses of congress yes i think they could have agreed on this and gotten through it now are you speaking from my talking points well i'm not i listen to boom bust every day of yours i do but now how optimistic are you though with the split you know split house that you're going to be able to see some of that it all go so his speech the year before and last year i liked i liked
8:38 pm
teleprompter trump i thought he gave a great speeches i think will probably give a pretty great speech tonight but his actions have to follow up he has to not be petty and tweak the you know destructive things that tear people apart instead of bring us together so i view it a unifying speech tonight but that will take actually the proof will be in the putting it's the democrats are ready to do it they'll do it and i think many most republicans will too it's the best one and it could really help us with regard to employment and making us a better country on wage stagnation you're pointing to absolutely that's why i say in the low job the jobs are being created through the top with high education high paying jobs or low jobs the middle job the ones that our folks had those jobs are vanishing and despite the fact that we want to bring those back and maybe we'll i wish the president all the luck on manufacturing those seem to be disappearing according to the data not the data and that brings in the third part of this is the
8:39 pm
issue right now is that on one hand i think you're going to see the president bragging about these trade deals that are done but like anything the devil's in the details and we don't have the details and congress still has to ratify all of these agreements so let's talk about how the trade deals actually are affecting basically the rest of it put the positive on first. we got something done it's not implemented yet on don't so good maker in chief too it's possible that some of the things with regard to tariffs on china will end up really positive for the economy . we talked about it on your program the other day we talk about on boom bust all the time looking at individual companies and ensuring they compete can compete in china that they're not joint ventures that require forced technology transfer etc now taking the other side but not so good size neff just pretty much the same as it was it's not been implemented all that's happened is he's a you know criticize prime minister to go in canada people are going what was the big deal that's about the same one china trade we have lots of folks hurting we've
8:40 pm
talked about the soybean farmers the farmers are hurting manufacturing if you look at some of the earnings of the big companies john deere caterpillar those folks they've got some problems coming it could be solved so i want to be too pessimistic about it but we have to cross our fingers and again the proof will be in the pudding it's a tight rope that the president's walking on trade today well also a bit later the big number that all americans usually care for at the end of one time is what they look at is this final number and it's right here and it's actually what our national debt is twenty one that really i know i was really a dollars wage when president truck came into office it was nineteen point seven trillion dollars so it's gone up something like seventeen per percent so that's a huge and by the way that's the big our there is now there's all of our tax a lot of that right here anybody who watches and that one right there would make al the credit card company credit card to my wallet because so and look in fairness to
8:41 pm
the president. seventy five percent of the increase the national debt going up you see it just going up click click click click that is due to interest on the debt so a lot of it is uncontrollable but it's going to take republicans and democrats to control it the deficit the annual deficit has gone up to seven hundred eighty two billion dollars that the per year deficit right well we haven't been and that's increasing percent since he took office so not a good course to fix this overall debt. the deficit the debt the debt is even worse and ultimately that's what both parties should be looking at when they make any sort of poly decision is a right there that national debt and if they're going to do anything for attracting thank you bart for following this and we'll see how tonight's speech goes thank you scotty.
8:42 pm
now as we get closer to the president's address i want to see what our panel of experts are joining us tonight have to say about it and what they're looking forward to we're joined tonight by former u.s. diplomat jim josh trysts republican strategist chris and i wayne former pentagon official michael maloof so rights attorney robert patillo conservative commentator steve malzberg and former georgia state representative doc and take water thank you so much for joining us i know it's a busy night i know there's lots of things are going on we brought you this panel together specifically because each of you are an expert in your field whether we're talking about foreign policy or domestic issues so i was star obviously let's start off with the domestic issues i'm going to start with former georgia state was heavy you had on jones and i want to talk about conservative commentator dan l'orange i want to make sure i want to talk about what exactly are we going to be looking for tonight what do you think that to let's what do we think that the president actually going to be able to say that's going to make republicans happy so i'm
8:43 pm
asking you the start of a state where we think that you know what republicans need to hear tonight from the president i think republicans need to hear is accomplishments which he has many whether it's the regulation is as you would know apart we're talking about the great economic climate that we're in a lot of what went into that the judges that he appointed i think that's a big deal think he'll make a big deal about cabinet especially i think he needs to reinforce the that he's willing to cooperate but we need border security he's got to stop short of declaring a national emergency but he will stress that he's not going to give in on the wall and i also think that. he's going to talk about working with the democrats on infrastructure and prescription drugs the problem with that is the democrats different we have different recipes for solving and approaching those problems so that would that will never work but i think that the president's going to be tough and i hope he is tough and shame on those democrats who are going to show up in maxine waters for telling people to turn off the t.v. and not watch it and camilla harris already holding a press conference and blasting the speech before the speech well that we'll get to
8:44 pm
that in a second i will tell you the president trump is on his way currently is just that the white house milady of the first lady actually went against protocol and went forty minutes ahead of time by herself because she wanted her husband to focus on his speech and she wanted to greet their guys that they're going to have they're going to go to you. what do you think democrats what's a positive the democrats need to hear from the president tonight really want to hear the president trying to unite the country some type of compromise talking again about infrastructure i agree with that i'm talking about more things you could do as relates to criminal justice reform going to step further that he's even gone this past bill we want to look at more opportunities for empowerment zones in black and we want to hear that and see that in this president's speech is there a part though that you think there's going to be contention that you are i mean there is what everybody truthers republicans or democrats some claps some don't and this case what do you think is going to be a contentious moment for the president issue that he's going to address immigration it is that border wall i mean he is he's really little if he does not want to
8:45 pm
compromise his we had the shutdown and now i think he's going to try to do a state of emergency which is dangerous for this entire country because he will not always be the president and republicans we keep that in mind when his time in the times turned into years and there's going to be a democrat in the white house robert she mentions the wall the top is there a very big issue that has to do with foreign policy as well as domestic policy right here what do you think is going to be the president is he going to take a hard core steven miller wrote speech take on this or do you think he's just going to soften it a little bit and just throw some false. just to get through tonight without getting booted well the steven miller part of the administration's over that was the first two years we had control of the house the senate the majority on the supreme court and every other part of government mechanisms working for republicans you cannot compromise with the steven miller view of immigration the now want to crack down on illegal immigration but legal immigration also what the president has to do is put out an olive branch to democrats they're only about three billion dollars apart on funding the the bill that would be that was just
8:46 pm
a previously was about one point six billion dollars and border security funding he wants five point seven billion let's meet in the middle i'm fond of compromise so he puts that out as opposed to this and i think that can go a long way toward preventing a second government shutdown actually getting something done on border security which is a crucial issue but to steve's point when you have democrats already starting out and not showing up tonight and we know how this president to react does that really show that he is going to take that kind of soften all of branch when he feels like possibly there are those on the other side aisle who are not going to do the same well as compared to his who to his predecessor even president obama had to deal with thing with joe wilson yelling out you lie during the state of the union speech to republicans not standing up for anything that he said during his administration made during any state of the union he still took that conciliatory tone not pushing a far outside the mainstream idea of government so i think the president needs to take a page out of that book of paid the george w. bush book and try to build bridges because he does not control the entire
8:47 pm
government anymore he has to work with democrats they control the power of the purse strings they control investigations so you have to make sure you were part of a reach across party lines well an issue that has just come over the last honestly two weeks that we're having to deal with and it has to do with agree chair or party lines because for once you do see people like chuck schumer and mitch mcconnell the grain on this which is kind of odd to start and it's our policy going forward in venezuela and i'm going to turn to you right now chris now and what do you think the president go to say is he going to address venezuela and what do you think he's going to say i think he is i think the. we're we're back in the opposition leader i mean this is the current president has defied constitutional orms wants to stay in power forever backed by russia just all those sort of norms of executive power you see the riots that are going on you see discontent in largely another illustration of why socialist policies are such a failure now we're dealing with all this i think we're looking at back in the opposition leader the president's been consistent on that i think he is going to be speaking to that because we want to be supporting democrat societies and making
8:48 pm
sure that we're opposing dictators well it's interesting that we're talking about opposing dictators and we're talking about getting involved at the same time one of the big parts of president over the last a few months has been that he was going to pull out of syria and he was going to pull out about gas and so i'm going to go to you jim what do you think the president already looking for the president to say in regards that as there's been some battles back and forth amongst his own staff as to whether or not we're actually going to see real troop withdrawal out of fear in afghanistan that is certainly what i'm going to be looking for and let me just say i disagree with everything that's been said so far that i have and i don't think it's a question of trouble dividing the country and this country is very divided trump is a symptom in that regard you know he did not cause that it's not even about republicans and democrats so much look on syria and afghanistan we've got mitch mcconnell down there trying to tie the president's hands from using his absolute constitutional authority to get troops out of syria where they don't belong there illegally anyway for me whether we're talking about the wall as his primary if you will to mess to campaign promise or getting out of these wars in afghanistan and syria this is
8:49 pm
really a litmus test of whether trump is really the president or whether john bolton's the president he consider that he wants in a speech and i listen to the speech i hope there's something behind it but we haven't been gauging and i would respectfully disagree with chris in this in this god awful regime change operation in venezuela which is how we got into these trillions and trillions of dollars messes and all these other countries i think what a lot of people like me who were trump supporters from the beginning saying i don't like the republicans i don't like the democrats i don't like that the obama. for the liberal interventionist where is the guy we voted for in two thousand and sixteen and right now by a bind that's hanging by a thread and as far as working with the democrats and bridging the gaps none of that's going to happen this is scorched earth there's only one goal they're going to have is get him out of there because they consider him dangerous and in fact in the evil person ok so i don't think there's going to be a compromising infrastructure anything else was anything that has to messed up the other part over in the middle east there are several different issues in this that are going to go to you mr maloof is we're going to talk about what's going on in
8:50 pm
israel as well as going with the palestinians right now and throw in a wrong because the president said he is definitely gets the iran nuclear treatment tell me what do you think that the president is going to say tonight if he addresses it and how is it going to be received by the group that is in that room well he's definitely going to address it i think what we're going to be seeing is him talking about the invincibility of the u.s. military the need for keep america strong militarily and that will include being in the middle east it will include watching iran as he has dubbed it the main sponsor of terrorism in the world and also to protect israel it also means and to follow on with what jim says we're going to probably see more john bolton in this speech in terms of not immediately pulling troops out of syria and in fact we may even keep some adult enough at a very critical juncture why the blocks to block israel started to block iran and
8:51 pm
protect israel and to prevent iran from becoming to the mediterranean i think that's where he's going to be heading was interesting because like all of you have said i think we can all agree on this point that whatever the president says tonight i think we have to get at least twenty four hours to see his twitter feed to see what actions are going to come up because so many times we hear a great speech and god bless whoever runs dollar trying to teleprompter that asked me the hardest job i think in america tonight to see what comes from it and the response that he hasn't staving you have a really good pulse of the can. and what conservatives feel like right now you've heard the conversation obvious very diverse and i think even among the conservative party right now they're kind of torn at their also also about a war and they don't they're tired of defending a president that is always in at least ten different turmoils do you think conservatives tonight he's going to be able to say enough to get them excited about going into a two thousand and twenty alexion campaign yeah i think i think really what it's all about is the twenty twenty election campaign i really don't think there's a chance to get much done and i think he's going to have
8:52 pm
a conciliatory tone as he did last year and didn't pay off at all but he's also going to have a harsh tone and he's going to lay down the law basically and he's not going to bend and he's going to say you know i want to get things done we have to put the animosity aside and i hope he says but if i don't get an offer from nancy pelosi i can't there is nothing to talk about so i think conservatives like the red meat the bulk of them over the eighty percent still support him and i think he's good at you know present victims of of people who are murdered by illegals have their relatives there he's got a young boy there whose last name is trump who is being bullied because of that and he wants to change his last name he's bringing him there so i think it's going to make a lot of points and i think it's going to really hit home with conservatives we have seen on both sides of the aisles the more that these people that each of these leadership stands up and from the camera and they are strong and they punch back it seems like both parties right now want fighters at the top of their leadership whether you're talking about nancy pelosi and having no problem standing up to
8:53 pm
trump or president trump standing up to nancy pelosi it seems like with their base the more of a fighter attitude they take the more pop a they get it gets their group growing do you think democrats tonight are going to be civil are you going to see some sort of discourse possibly on the floor like we've seen in the past on both sides when something is said that it's obvious that the democratic party does not agree with well i think the democrats always civil to be honest with you and i think what happens is when we get into this this chamber with this bipartisan bipartisan it's hard to come up. and the reason is because we have so divided now in this country and their american people are the ones who need to stand up and fight and say enough is enough now granted i agree most of the time of the democrats but right now i think our country is at a pivotal point where we can go completely to the american blue to the right in a good or bad way either way and i'm telling you it's not good i think i mean even my children now talking about mom i think it might possibly be
8:54 pm
a culture war race war going on this is scary times in america and i don't even know how we got so divided because we're really not that different i just think that some of the people on the left and some people on the right of calls in all of this into this country and we've got to bring it back to the middle but that being said democrats always right and. well speaking of democrats some look at also of the republican and some of the issues chris i want to bring the expression of the younger ones you do have people like alexander cortez who is definitely getting millennial is excited and getting engaged tonight there hasn't been a lot of excitement in fact i think there's been more of a pre-show for tonight's state of the union and there was the super bowl people are probably going to be turning in to see what kind of response and their interaction does this help the president right now that more people are engaged in this possibly something he wanted i think so i mean i think the president's good at dominating attention is something that was a strength for him when i went to the republican primary i think voters want vibrance they want to say when they want someone to can really charge the issues they care about i think that's why you see is popular i admire her hard work i
8:55 pm
think she's one of the least informed clueless economic minds ever you can i don't know many other i don't know her experience as mine not serving in the military going overseas coming from middle class working their way up i think that it's the wrong headed way to go but i do think people do want flamboyant exciting candidates that are not going to put them to sleep well speaking of flamboyant exciting candidates so when i put them to sleep the justices are entering the chamber currently. unfortunately we have found out that justice ruth bader ginsburg will not be joining them tonight she's obviously still recovering for her elements been . we know that she is going to be watching and paying attention hopefully by far so the justices are entering obviously this is one of the first steps that we see there is a lot of pageantry that goes into that i think across the board regardless of who's holding in the white house we all have to say that this is a legacy and this is not something that has to be done but it's something just over a period time there's some politics have kind of reached out to each other and said let's do this at least try to unite for one night and watch jim i have to go to you because you were the first one that brought up the contention between all of the
8:56 pm
different parties tonight as you're seeing people entering and you're seeing the president entering what do you think is going through his mind right now not like i'd ever expect anybody put to predict president over what's going through the mind but do you think he sees the opportunity right now to change the minds of some of those that might consider to be against him or potentially at the very least to roll up his base well certainly to rile up his base he's got to do that and frankly i don't think that's hard for him i think most of his base is pretty loyal to him the idea of changing minds no no this remember this is america nobody changes their minds anymore if they ever did and they certainly are not going to do that now i don't think he intends to do that this is all about maneuver it's about getting your people fired up trying to weaken theirs frankly i think one of the things if you can get through the next two years building this wall through the military through a state of emergency if he has to getting out of afghanistan in syrian telling his national security team to go to hell not doing something really stupid in venezuela
8:57 pm
and if you know again let's not mean being to be sound mean but if he gets to make another appointment to the supreme court. i think that i think that could be a real big win for him going forward something that some other don't know the republican president has ever really delivered to the to the social conservatives in this country so i think he those are the things he needs to be focusing on in the show he still president controls more than his mouth and slums so michael tonight do you think we're going to have any surprises do you think president tribe is actually going to surprise us. with anything there's a lot of speculation between declaring a state of emergency between one hundred percent guarantee in the military do you think we're going to do you think surprising or i don't know anything new tonight well the word is he's not going to bring up national emergency and he's not going to bring up shut down but what i'm really concerned about is that he's going to be following more of a neo con foreign policy line i think and also we haven't even discussed this treaties with rights russia i think we're going to be seeing that currently right
8:58 pm
now the first lady is entering. entering and you can see her looking stunning and as she greets her guests around her now like you mentioned some of the guests that are going to be accompanying president trump tonight as we said are going to be a young man who is being bullied because of his last name said if you want to get over being black as your last name i probably would turn down the president but you know at least it's always you who turns down the president especially at that age but he's also does have some of the victims some of the illegals that have crossed over and committed crimes and a family that's with them as well back to your foreign policy is they're all going to the first lady what do you think that you're worried that it could take more of a neo-con to get in you know and i think i think we're going to be seeing that and again i don't think he's going to be in control of his foreign policy is going to be the neo cons we're going to see much more belligerent see toward the toward russia toward treaties arms reduction treaty coming up that raises the question about new start coming up in twenty twenty one for renewal i think that's going to
8:59 pm
be knocked down as well well you brought up the one word that we were going to say i'm going to save us but you brought up russia we had this week the president pulling out of the i.m.f. is he going to address that tonight obviously there's been a whole line another indictments that have come down in the last few weeks than you had since subpoenas come down today against his campaign does the president even begin to encroach on relations with russia on either personally or more professionally of what's going on i think he's going to show that he does maintain a hard line toward. russia in order to offset that kind of. barrage of complaints about him and that he doesn't address it they're going to point that out you know like you should have at least thrown something out he's addressed them and he got to show that he's tough especially toward russia in order to offset what whatever the middle or investigate investigation is going to show that we have cabinet men or members are now entering into the chamber the question right now this is an interesting question for the democrats some of these were you know we do have the
9:00 pm
they left the designated survivor i'm not talking about the t.v. show they actually have a dozen or so however somehow we were kind of trying to go through of who it could be because you actually have to be confirmed and you have a president right now that has several offices that are not confirmed or their replacements have not been named yet does the day does this help or hurt president trump you think going into the latter part of his of his term the fact that he doesn't have people right now that are a full staff a full cabinet going on with that robert well you know this was just like watching the super bowl where you said to yourself the rams got to get off to a hot start to win and they did and they lost the president had a chance to go to a hot start when he had control of the house and the senate and he failed to do so by getting me to these appointments confirmed by getting ready for the judges confirmed by getting the scabby completely pull fleshed out the way they needed to properly run the government so i think what we're going to hear from him tonight is focus on the points he's put on the board so far he had a great this is a book about oh see we had the first step that he signed in the.
