deal or no deal it's down to the wire on whether the us avoids yet another government shutdown details on this edition of politics. or a spending bill to avoid another government shutdown and thus far only a lukewarm response from republicans on the hill outrage from conservative media displeasure from dong trumbo on the bills for vision for his border wall but with a little bargaining power for a better deal is the battle of the spending bill and questions about another government shutdown finally over let's start there with our political panel in new york amy holmes co-host of the p.b.s. show in principle and in chattanooga tennessee brian joyce host of the brian joyce show on talk radio w g o w f.m.

all right amy we've got hannity against that from doesn't like didn't republican mcconnell likes it what's going to happen. well in the words of the rolling stones you can't always get what you want and that is politics there are really a lot of options neither side wants a government shutdown this is the sort of eleventh hour deal that they're they've been able to put together and i would say both sides have had to compromise larry we've talked a lot in the past weeks about how this there was an idea to be able to trade dhaka and improving the situation for dreamers in return for border wall funny well doc was taken off the table and donald trump isn't getting his full five point six seven billion dollars for his wall i think that it's a good thing that we're not going to be going into another government shutdown and the president trump and republicans have also talked about different paths to you know getting more money for this border wall but we'll see it we'll see it you know

we'll cross that bridge to mix my metaphors when we get there but i think we are close to a deal i think both sides know that you know they've got to put this together brian what's your read. well look i think the most important thing to note here larry is that there was never going to be a wall in mexico was denver going to pay for this this was a silly campaign promise that donald trump promised to his base and i understand that every presidential candidate will throw some red meat out there to the base but this was never a realistic policy it was never a realistic proposal i have been saying that from the very beginning and the fact of the matter is for the past many years congress has been allocating a lot of money to border security and that's why border crossings and illegal border crossings are at near historic lows right now which ironically is something that president trump points out quite often that you know our border agents are doing a great job and that illegal border crossings are at near all time lows and then he

turns around and in the very next statement says but we have a national emergency on the border there isn't an emergency on the border there was never going to be a wall mexico is not going to pay for it in the meantime i think congress needs to continue doing what they do which is focusing on border security because it is a big important issue and really to amy's point i'd like to see some immigration reform and we're really not tackling that. oh there's going to other areas amy trump had a big pro-war rally in el paso this week a potential democratic opponent be doe overall upstage the counter-rally you think that's a preview of twenty twenty. well certainly having the president trump drawing huge numbers huge crowds for rallies it was a feature of twenty sixteen you can expect in two thousand and twenty five again back to this idea about there will be no wall we actually have seven hundred miles of border wall that was you know side into law by both sides democrats and

republicans and if this deal comes together it will mean more wall not as much as president trump was asking but certainly more than nancy pelosi initially was willing to concede she said she was going to give one single dollar now we're looking at one point three billion or so for in point of fact more wall plus other elements of border security. brian during the. during the campaign in two thousand and sixteen trump pledged he'd wipe out the entire national debt within eight years the national debt is now twenty two trillion the highest ever you think is going to cut that out in two years. no that's not going to happen larry and you know this news that we received this week that the debt is now at twenty two trillion dollars it has risen two trillion dollars under president trump the fact of the matter is president trump and the republican congress that was in place for the first two years of his presidency

they were on pace to spend more money than barack obama did in eight years ok the fact of the matter is debt and deficits only matters to republicans when a democrat is in the white house this is why they harp on it as loudly as they did when obama was in office anybody with a pulse knew that as soon as a republican is back in the white house and as soon as republicans are in charge of congress they will continue to spend and the spending will be out of control and i'm not surprised i'm not surprised ryan what about the controversy surrounding the democratic freshman congresswoman ileana omar she apologized for anti semitic remarks trump says she should quit she says trump has trafficked in hate trump has yet to criticize congressman king of iowa who is a white supremacist what do you make of all of that. i think there's two things to discuss here larry number one and i hope i don't sound controversial myself when i

say this but when l.r. all went along omar says that there is a israel lobby that spends a lot of money in washington d.c. that is not an anti-semitic statement it is an accurate statement we all know how washington d.c. works in a pack and guess there is an israel lobby no different from big oil big pharma the environmental lobby the labor lobby this is how washington d.c. works and this is how it has worked for a long time and yes there is an israel lobby that spends a lot of money in washington d.c. in saying that she might be and israel she might have problems with the way netanyahu does things she's not saying anything that's anti-semitic she's not saying anything that's anti-semitic so i don't really understand what she had to apologize for in the first place now to trump's point that she beats to reside in it what are we supposed to laugh at that this is a president who has been accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment sixteen times in his life this is a president who just this week again made

a joke about native american genocide but sure go on and tell me how the freshman congresswoman from minnesota she's the definition of racism and anti-semitism if the republican party wants to tackle racism anti-semitism they should start with the man in the white house and. well unfortunately the minnesota congresswoman does have quite a long history if you want to call the problematic statements when it comes to israel and also jewish people article just came out just this week that she was counseled on this by democratic jews in minnesota locally a year ago they tried to stage an intervention and they didn't get very far in her recent remarks don't really surprise them she talked about israel hypnotizing the world being an apartheid regime and on and on it goes i actually thought the reaction in washington to the congresswoman's remarks was really heartening to me that both sides of the aisle spoke almost unanimously that she needed to apologize

. she called the remarks anti-semitic she did not mince words with that and she said she had a conversation with the congresswoman the congresswoman did apologize she said she still listening and learning i'm afraid larry we're going to have a lot more listening and learning sessions for the congress and going into the future but there was near unanimity lease in washington d.c. amy weiss remarks are really outrageous and. why does the president call for congressman king. i would like him to and in fact other republicans have they've said that congressman king needs to find a nother line of work lynne cheney said that mitch mcconnell certainly is no fan we've talked about it on this show i personally have had an experience with congressman king where he was very racially in century and then tried to apologize to me i don't think he has any business in congress i would like to hear the president ask you know ask for him to step down but i i would hope in two years i

would voters do that themselves then where is all of fuzz about alexandria ocasio cortez a congressman from new york she's a. very interesting she has no power why why don't we make such a big deal of this one woman. well for a couple of reasons if you're wondering why republicans make a big deal out of her it's because they're terrified of her she's young she's attractive despite what they want to say she's dumb she's not she's very intelligent does she have some ideas that might be a little bit out there by today's standards in america sure i mean i would like to again remind republicans larry i really enjoy when republicans call this woman and her ideas stupid and silly we have a president in the white house who told us he will build a wall and make mexico pay for it that is the silliest stupidest thing it makes alexandria ocasio cortez look like sophocles ok now are some of her ideas

a little bit out there sure a lot of them aren't as out there is people would like to think seventy percent marginal tax rate we had that in the united states under dwight eisenhower that's not radical medicare for all we have medicare medicare for all just expanded it's not radical sure we have to figure out a way to pay for it but how do we pay for all the other adventures that we get ourselves into in this country look i like the woman i like what she's doing i think republicans are terrified of her because they know she has a message that resonates with especially young voters amy oh i think republicans are thrilled with alexandria kazi a court says and the green new deal was a great new gift to the g.o.p. they cannot wait to run ads you know pulling out different aspects of it and it was supposed to be about the environment but it's packed with this sort of socialist wish list you know guaranteed income for every every american a guaranteed job paying for school paying for and by the way medicare for all and

getting rid of all private health insurance is a very radical idea that most americans would not be in support of but i think it's sort of interesting larry that she's now saying so well let me backtrack this mcconnell he wants to bring the green new deal resolution to the senate floor for a vote put people on the right. are you for it are you against it now the congresswoman who's resolution it is that she's sponsoring this was her big rollout last week this is her resolution she's now saying that miss mcconnell is trying to trick people to vote for she's trying and that he's trying to make people look bad well that just doesn't make any logical sense you brought this to the house floor presumably you want people to vote on it and now you're saying to vote on it would make them look bad ascends about this deal came out and people just shook their heads and a lot of republicans frankly laughed brian can we all agree amy too that this is the craziest time in politics. hands down i think

a return visit for hill harper always a pleasure to talk with him in addition to his starring roles in t.v. and film he's a bestselling author activist host of the podcast legal wars we'll talk a little prison reform an inmate rehab imitation and your activism also a little about the good doctor we have passed the midpoint of the trump presidency your assessments were grade would you give him on a scale of ten. can we go into negative figures larry yeah a minus minus ten. you know it's he it's really awful we all as americans and the voting public have to look at ourselves in the mirror he told us who he was you know i think that there was a a large percentage of the population that felt that that the weight of the office or the seat might change him because there is a gravitas to the seat. but you actually have to sit in the seat and realize it and

unfortunately you know we we got what who we elected has succeeded in dismantling the obama record except for obamacare i mean it's the most troubling aspect of his presidency obviously someone i mean i'm someone who read rim harvard law school so i always look i'm going to school with him i went to school with with with number forty four yes and so i always look at the legal side and you know the most troubling aspect of the from presidency and the most trouble . legacy barring barring some completely unforseen catastrophe is going to be the judicial appointments the folks he's appointed are so. dangerous and so political and they have lifetime appointments and so that's what troubles me the most about about him being there. but if those judges are going to dismantle a great deal of things not just from the obama eight years but from you know when we talk about roe v wade we can talk about all sorts of things but those judges

will be dismantled as well chris christie told me the other merit would be his legacy trump's legacy better leave will be yes now do you think he's succeeded in dismantling the obama legacy you know what i don't think so because you know better than i like you know we he's you know it's amazing he's he's kind of just stand back in now and you know right now michelle's out front with her book tour and doing all the different things she's doing and i'm so you know i'm so impressed by him of kind of just sitting back and letting other people do what they did but he must be ticked you know i don't know that because remember the obama legacy is about hope it was about change and i think what we're seeing now is just look at the midterms we're seeing so many women so many diverse folks getting involved in politics that perhaps the rebound of trump out of obama and then this rebound that we're seeing now is is the true legacy you know president obama proved that someone

who folks said could not win could not be president can have a president with that name or looks like that eccentric cetera he's showing folks get involved. get active become activists become political and we're seeing a wave of diversity now it's unprecedented particularly gender diversity you're a long time advocate of prison reform sign the first step cracked must have been pleased with that you know we're surprised known and all because at the end of the day. prison reform is not about political parties it just makes sense you know we're five percent of the world's population but we have twenty five percent of the world's inmates the the most troubling aspect of it though larry is i just did a press conference for john ramsey who was wrongfully convicted how many years of these he did thirty three years thirty three years in prison for

a crime he wasn't even there you know and the whole plea the whole plea bargain aspect of our criminal justice so-called criminal justice system the over incarceration all of these things needs to get dismantle it's not political it's not republican democrat it just makes sense so we have to do it and then the legacy of black men in particular black men are six percent of the u.s. population almost forty percent of the inmates and there's no study that says that black men commit more crime than white men so so so what's really going on for the over and parse ration of of particularly young african-american males and you know all of us have to take a look at larger surprise that republicans will for this because you know everybody wants to stand up and say that they're doing something around budget right and so it becomes a budgetary issues on the republican side they can tout that they're you know they're draining the swamp they're making government smaller they're spending less and so you you you have folks that are interested in social justice interested in

criminal justice reform and then you have folks that are interested in so called making the government smaller those two folks can work together in this space how do you feel about. felons know voting rights restored in florida of all places it's it's essential and it should is the fundamental aspect of our democracy and if you served your time. that right needs to exist for you and the fact that we're even in it the fact that we're even debating or being marvel that florida did that is is a travesty in itself in my opinion right because it should it should be automatic is the fundamental right of being an american is your ability to cast a vote and having served your time. it's you know it doesn't make sense to me oh it was you terry gum or it's going on and so was is wasn't said to be laughable what's going on in. the state of virginia.

you know. it's listen i don't want to. i just want people to represent i want i want people in office rightful folks that have acted correctly done the right thing and if and if. and if you're a racist if you're massaging as if you've been violent toward women violent towards and if you have the black face whatever those things you know what just admit it say i've learned i've done this i'm going to take a step back and let someone else step in absolutely there should be resignations a governor of virginia yes is i would call a major liberal come on larry used to be a republican to what i think you should be republican that's what i was told i mean i don't know him personally but i don't think he's a i would not call him a liberal you are you don't think his i don't use the word liberal though larry i use were progressive and i don't think he's i don't think it's particularly

a progressive but at the end there is not regressive well it doesn't matter the point is is that. if you. have not done something to redress. appearing in black face with someone in the k.k.k. a horrible it's in the in the eighty's it's it's atrocious and what folks don't realize and this is what i think people have to wrap their head around. those images are deeply painful for african-americans and it's not just a talking point it's not just oh you shouldn't have done it there's a list so much historical pain that. to me the honorable thing is to say i want to do something to redress that pain i'm actually going to take a sacrifice myself because i'm going to honor the folks that i shouldn't have done that i made a mistake and i'm going to show other young people not to take these actions

because what happens is if you feel like you can get away with anything it's almost endorsing the behavior say hey listen do whatever you want be aggressive defense it's just like the old me two movements same same thing same thing laura ingraham seems to get in trouble every week. so do with you she wonders where is culturally appropriate for black actors to portray white historical figures in the play hamilton which is by the way the number one player ever and yes what do you make of that statement. you know there obviously lynn meant well miranda is trying to communicate a specific message with the way that plays cast right and therefore you never want to restrict i believe the artist from doing what they do i mean you're creating art i mean obviously it's a fictional piece based off historical figures you know alexander hamilton was

running around singing in the streets i mean you know and he certainly wasn't doing it on a broadway stage so so so so you get in big to me art is art and so you want creatives to create you don't want to artist want to appear in black face that's their choice as artist it's different when you're a governor. governor's not an artist right he's a public servant if you go to democratic field. you know i think it's i think it's wide open i'm excited i'm excited for folks that are going to jump in that haven't jumped in yet i think there's going to be some surprises in i'm excited about who's going to hopefully rise out of out of that group or. ok or are going to bring back the rust belt. as things that the good doctor the doctor's great you know i'm so proud to be on a show that just represents good things you know celebrating diversity celebrating

difference you know freddie highmore who plays the good doctor. is a wonderful young actor who's doing a magnificent job i think he should win every emmy every golden globe for what the work he does every day on the show and david shore you know who's who's a creator of houses as our executive producer and says you know he's the best writer in t.v. and so i'm so happy and proud to be on the show i'm kind of the bad doctor on the good doctor but it's you know are you ever going to run for office just so. you know what about i thought about it i've been pulled to do it i would push you know i just want to do what i can do to help make communities better particularly folks who don't have voice and i feel like at least right now the way i can do that best is through my foundation through the work that i do and it's not necessarily holding a political office that may change at some point. right now no intention always great seeing larry thanks so much you are
