12:30 pm
we can't be watching the hawks or rubbing a belly full of toys. to. the. real that this was. the plot of. the day like you are going to. the police. with. the. world i'm sorry i'm a robot and on top of the u.s. census data and simmons national consumer survey found that in twenty eighteen two hundred eighty six million americans consume cold breakfast cereal that makes sense as the u.s. is the number one producer of corn in the world pumping out over thirteen billion bushels of corn each year corn that is used in almost all of the four thousand
12:31 pm
varieties of breakfast cereal produced here in the u.s. with so many people especially kids eating this all american classic what could possibly be bad about it well last fall the center for environmental health independently tested some of america's most popular breakfast cereals aside from opening parents' eyes to the danger lurking in brand name food it also showed how some very toxic chemicals are making their way from the farm to the table here's our t. america sarah montessori a report on the study from august twenty eighth. according to the environmental work group or. the key ingredient in roundup sweet killing poisoned life to say it is also found in popular oprah ticks and several breakfast foods including cereals marketed to children that found that the ingredient is present in forty three of the forty five cereals they tested thirty one of those contained life estate levels well above the organizations health. mark of one hundred sixty parts per billion of
12:32 pm
life is it was also found in organic although it was detected at a low level below the safe threshold but those that contain the highest levels of life estates were quaker old fashioned oat with levels higher than a thousand parts per billion popular children's brands like cheerios and lucky charms also found extremely high levels to put this into perspective e.w. g.'s child protective health benchmark for daily exposure of life a say in food is one hundred sixty parts per billion quaker oats contains seven hundred sixty a statement from each says eat i s'posed to a suspected carcinogen at a time when their bodies are rapidly developing to say was also found in oat was and other snack bars while cereal and these easy breakfast foods have all been linked to all kinds of health benefits including lowering cholesterol and decrease cardiovascular risk they fail to mention the high risk of exposure to this
12:33 pm
carcinogen life a-c. now in december the e.p.a. concluded that life is a is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans but this contradicts the both the world health organization and california state scientists have linked life estate to cancer political director of organic consumers association alexis baden mayer is also calling for retailers to take initiative. it takes time for the science to be done and sadly people get sick and die in the meantime so we really need to use a precautionary approach and get these products off the marketplace quaker oats responded with a statement saying they are following e.p.a.'s guidelines e.w. g. is now urging the e.p.a. to review the findings and asking them to limit the use of quietus a on food crops in washington sara montecito r.t. . group for it's interesting since one last.
12:34 pm
regarding row. with the working group released its report. anything regarding the issue of food well the f.d.a. actually had been pushed to publish some results of a study that they did back in two thousand and sixteen of how much life state was really in our food so they did actually publish those results in october believe it or not during the twenty sixteen f.d.a. analyzed over seven thousand food samples now these were over sixty nine hundred. and over four hundred animal products from ninety eight countries forty six states within the united states the f.d.a. did find that over ninety nine percent of domestic and ninety percent of import human foods work compliant with federal standards and i want to bring back in mind the report from the glyphosate was found at high levels in corn but not eggs or milk and soybeans as well i want to bring back though to the limits if we remember back when i refer supported on this california proposal that's where one point one
12:35 pm
milligrams now that was very different from the e.p.a.'s which one hundred forty milligrams and the e w g's which shows a point zero one milligram that's about one one hundredth of the california proposed limit but the e.p.a. has increased their limits over time so the e.p.a. has limits were not the same in one thousand nine hundred nine as they are now so they did increase the limit saying that it's not carcinogenic it's not harmful and they did release a quote saying the u.s. . food and drug administration today issued the final results of its annual pesticide residue monitoring program from food collected in fiscal year two thousand and sixteen and found that the vast majority of samples were below the tolerance levels set by the e.p.a. . it's interesting to see where those tolerance levels were still within the guidelines but now we're looking at those guidelines a little closer which seems to be what happens you sort of have this change and you say maybe that is a mess healthy and the long run as we can see now one of the ways to stop the
12:36 pm
spread of poison is to not have it on the storage shelves so you know when you have something you know part of this is and it's not as if you know there's something in cereal being sprayed on maybe it's the corn it's the oed it's the way that we're using in the growing of it so this round what you know. is there had been any difference at the retail and or any retailers stepping back and saying we don't want to be part of it although this isn't completely confirmed or hasn't been set out by costco costco has stopped selling ground up so and so now there was a petition on change dot org by moms across america with over eighty nine thousand signatures now those signatures were encouraging places like costco places like home depot places like lowe's to stop selling the product now costco i did call a few and did some research myself and their headquarters customer service did say that they no longer carry round up so at least that's one although there wasn't a huge press release i'm sure they didn't want to make a big deal out of this given some legal actions that might be taken in but they did
12:37 pm
say that they're no longer selling around and who knows home depot and lowes may follow suit after those eighty nine thousand signatures it's interesting because kris kross school could also be kind of given themselves about like let's say tomorrow suddenly everyone switches course for certain so i don't know it's funny or something it can be like well we've never a. right you know we're just a you can rip across you know it's interesting while we wait for the you. or or call groups to potentially. which is that probably was going to come billboard you know what can consumers do to limit their exposure well not something that you w.g. said right away after the report was published does this mean take your cheerios off the shelf no not completely but you can look for alternative brands alternative cheerios oats that are organic or now organic does have some very low level of life to say it's mainly because they think it's the wind from the organic one from one
12:38 pm
farm to the other but they can look for organic oats i mean these are fibers certain good fibers that have nutrients for children to be consuming at a young age it just to be cautious and really know the types of cereals that you're choosing because about a special or something like life or say you can kind of you know you put it on your yard you give it your cereal it adds up but if we could take those things out thanks the least here. thank you so much thank you for doing man. but cereal isn't the only worry on our breakfast table saw quarters recently it was revealed that lead and arsenic yes arsenic and other metals have been found there found their way into your favorite juices consumer reports tested forty five fruit juices currently in stores today and found twenty one of them were contaminated here's our to america with a story. parents may want to think twice before pouring a cup of juice for their children or for themselves but. that's because experts
12:39 pm
just found an unexpected and dangerous ingredient. in the metals or does that make their way into food and drinks because they occur naturally in the air water and soil they can also occur during the manufacturing process and now after testing forty five popular food uses across the country consumer reports found high levels of arsenic cadmium and lead the news particularly. alarming because the some of these juices are specifically popular amongst children in fact to see our survey of over thirty thousand parents found that more than eighty percent of parents of children three and younger give their kids juice the nonprofit also found that seventy five percent of their kids drink juice at least one time a day and drinking just even boron says a day can cause concern experts say that children are particularly vulnerable to harmful of facts to heavy metal dr jennifer lowry who was involved in the study said exposure to these metals early on can affect their whole life trajectory there
12:40 pm
is so much development happening in their first years of life depending on how long children have been exposed to these toxins and how much they've been exposed to they may be at risk for lower i.q. behavioral problems like age be type two diabetes and cancer among other health issues previous tests from c.r. and others have found elevated levels of heavy metals and not only fruit juices but infant and toddler foods rice and rice products protein powder and some types of fish and while exposure to heavy metals may be lask risky to adults exposure can still lead to health problems over many years small amounts of heavy metals may raise the risk of bladder long and skin cancer cognitive and reproductive problems and type two diabetes among other health conditions consumer reports are now urging the f.d.a. to take stronger action against metals found in food products. especially those marketed to children reporting in new york trinity each of us are. as we go to
12:41 pm
break or quarters don't forget to let us know what you think about topics are probably the best because whether it's your post shows it or dot com coming up we continue our in-depth look behind the labels of your favorite breakfast groups that are at risk of heavy metals and other dangers and what else is being found in all of our grocery store aisles stay tuned watching the whole. please. in twenty forty you know bloody revolution to correct the demonstrations going from

12:45 pm
mercury chromium copper zinc. over and simone emain going to be used and more but if you're wondering why you need to be worried about them it's because the food and drug administration only has limitations regulating four of those here straight as with airport on just how much of our food supply may be making it harder for us all to be healthy. virtuous has been the topic of conversation recently because experts found metals in many popular futures friends but the fact is that metals like arsenic lead mercury and cadmium are all around us but high levels of exposure can be toxic. it's been found in rice rice products protein powder and several baby products in fact in a two thousand and eighteen report. by consumer advocacy group consumer reports they tested fifty baby and toddler food products and found that of the fifty foods tested thirty four of them contain levels of toxic chemicals and fifteen of those products were actually marketing davies who eat one serving of them
12:46 pm
a day at risk of health problems and in two thousand and seventeen a nonprofit organization called clean label projects found that nearly eighty percent of infant formula samples tested positive for arsenic the number of items that we are finding out that have these harmful have been metals is quite concerning and it doesn't stop there well having metals are substances that make their way into food and drinks because they occur naturally in the air water and soil they can also make their way into our bodies through the use of common household products many want and expect that cosmetic and beauty products are often contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as lipstick eyeliners eye shadow blush and moisturisers hair dye and sunscreen as well another common source of heavy metals is furniture retardants protective finishes and fabrics that contain heavy metals like antenna me and can mean the issue is how much of it is found in those products so we know that our bodies have been exposed and continue to get exposed
12:47 pm
to having metal but the issue is the quantity nature of the explosives or the more exposure of harmful it is many now calling on the f.d.a. to take stronger action against metals and food products especially those marketed to children will be a danger for all kids perves should be prohibited or more protected by the gulf loop but you can't just get rid of these contaminants the f.d.a. said in the statement because these metals occur naturally in the environment or have infiltrated water air and soil because of the pollution they're hard to get rid of or even just minimize when these contaminants are in soil or water they are absorbed into plants which are then eaten by people or by animals then. sure the food supply i think they already have committees and stuff but if you tell me that they came moderate moderate it because it's unlike the environment around us and you can't you know using the type of technology to look at it then i don't really know i feel like something needs to be developed so that we can monitor that
12:48 pm
because it's dangerous. joining us now is trying to shove as from new york city thank you tryna be for that fascinating fascinating report i guess want to start with and ask you where can people find out what products you listed off a ton in that report i mean you're talking a baby food the cosmetics to everything so i think the next question logically in people's minds is where can people find out what products have tested high for heavy metals like words a good source of that would people and consumers can know what not to use. well the thing is there isn't really a source out there that describes specific products and brands on line i mean you could do as much research as possible online you know the f.d.a. c.d.c. and the world health organizations are constantly you know putting information out there as far as what is considered toxic but the thing is that we really have to consider is the fact that there is no limit considered safe nobody knows an amount
12:49 pm
that is actually considered safe and that's worrisome all these organizations and agencies just sort of tried to limit the amount exposure amount of exposure to consumers as much as possible but they haven't been able to determine a specific amount of you know cadmium lead mercury in any of these sort of products so finding the test results of heavy metals and food products is not easy for the consumer so in some countries organizations tested make the results available to the public but you really need to make sure that the information that is coming out of these organizations are actually well trusted and well established companies so they have credible results but again it's finding that that organization that talks about the different brands and different products out there it's there really isn't anything at this point and monitoring the food supply is the responsibility of local sleuths or dorothy's and according to the world health
12:50 pm
organization the consumer has every single right to request the sort of information from their food authorities and they should provide it to them again no we are going through consumer organizations that could also be helpful because it couldn't be a good source to apply pressure on food authorities to make sure that you're getting the proper information that you need the world health organization also collects food contamination monitoring data globally through the g.m.'s food program that they have and while the data is publicly available by geographic region and. it is not again on specific foods and brands. every one of the hard things i think is for people understanding that it's yes these metals naturally occur in the environment but we're seeing them more in soil contamination from everything from mining industry that's getting into our food and it is kind of scary that we don't really have a safe set of standards that we're not really looking at these things and that there
12:51 pm
isn't you know brands don't have to give that information up and it's not easily searchable i mean that's one of the things that we're going to have to do in the future is give consumers it shouldn't just be consumer organizations that are out doing that let me ask you turned eighty what what do the health experts suggest for all of us to avoid our exposure to any of these have a heavy metals and is it is easy is just avoiding certain brands. you know there's no easy answer to this question it's really difficult again for the consumer because they can before every meal you or your search every single you know saying that you're eating whether it's fish or rice or you know whatever it is you know you can't do that before every meal and like like experts say it's all in the environment around us so it is extremely difficult for the consumer to avoid heavy metals in their food since they stem largely from the environmental contamination
12:52 pm
the key food sources also vary between the metals depending on which metal is in which food and so that's again why they haven't been able to determine a safe limit or rather safe amount for specific foods and specific models for example the main source of mercury in certain large fish species is salmon you know salmon has a ton of mercury in it so you want to limit the consumption that you have with mercury all arsenic is also found in certain rice and rice products cadmium is found highest in certain social fish so again it for this point the consumer can't either. directly or you know go through consumer organizations and pope pressure on local authorities and on food suppliers to obtain relevant information to allow them to make an informed decision but overall experts say that it is recommended that you really do your research go online to search specific foods that you you know eat a lot that you give to your family try to find out exactly where it's coming from mom if it's farm raised as opposed to wild organic foods and not only for
12:53 pm
nutritional purposes but also for safety reasons to consume a broadly mixed and varied diet and not consume too much of the same thing too much of one thing is never is never good news is that it certainly is from new york to a southern state you so much for that report thanks again. so although we are all positively terrified to go to our grocery stores walk watchers the next question is just what are the institutions we trust like the f.d.a. and others doing to keep us safe you'll find that while the science to detect heavy metals is the best it's ever been many new standards are being passed as part of her look into heavy metals trinity chavez also looked at the current battles over food safety you know we live in a world where we're still rounded by heavy metals but when they become dangerous and can they be avoided but we want to be experts to find out. there substances
12:54 pm
that make their way into your food and drinks because they occur naturally in the air water and soil mercury is in fish. lead is in bone graft. and arsenic in right and the list goes on and on. but how are things that are supposed to be good for you contain such harmful toxins the way the world is right now with the way fish is really is farmed in the way the food is process it's just one of those things where we go to organic. to protect ourselves from what's going on with food. in the environment in these substances but experts say that small amounts one time or by one source may not be so bad we know that our bodies have been exposed and continue to get exposed to having metal but the issue is the chronic nature of the explosives or the more exposure obviously the more harmful it is in fact exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic lead and mercury could have
12:55 pm
damaging effects on one's health we worry about heart disease cardiovascular disease hypertension is the high blood pressure we are concerned with fertility and children who have been exposed to high levels of heavy metals could be at risk for lower i.q. behavioral problems like age the type two diabetes and cancer among other health issues will be a danger so all kids have this will be probably be more protective by the dogs live in two thousand and sixteen the f.d.a. did propose limiting inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal to one hundred parts per billion and in two thousand and thirteen proposed limiting inorganic arsenic in apple juice to ten parts per billion the federal arsenic standard for drinking water but neither limit was ever finalized because the fact is the scientific community is still unsure of what amount is actually safe. even an international team of experts administered by the food and agriculture organization of the united
12:56 pm
nations and the world health organization have been unsuccessful determining safe exposure levels for heavy metals like lead and arsenic experts could actually not to find a safe level of exposure because these have in many social broad spread in the environment in our food supply so the consequence is to reduce the level in the food to two as low as possible while scientific advances have been able to increase detection and data the f.d.a. says it's working to identify other areas in which they can further improve effort . to reduce the level of these metals in food. that way to lose our show for you to day that i was that i was fascinated by was true remember going to be safe with what you can remember everyone in this world told the real love them so i tell you all i love you i am tyrell them and i'm happy to lot less keep watching those hawks over there and over great they invite everybody.
12:57 pm
to. sit with you in terms of what obama has done personally i think he has not done enough i think in syria for example in two thousand and thirteen when there was a threat and we knew that the us invasion was about to use chemical weapons on a wide scale like he has done in. that mistake should have responded with force and eliminate the capacity of the city and to use helicopters and other if forced trouble betted bombs on people says.
12:58 pm
what do you do before you came here where did you work before you came here when you live well death row in many us states capital punishment is still present the victims' families they are very much in favor of the death penalty there are some people because of what they did have given up the right to live among us somebody even proven innocent doctor years on death row but how many more exonerations is it going to take before we as a society realize that this is not working and we actually do something about. the country has gone into a nihilistic fever that's why we got hit the road and get out to travelling across america to find what makes america the charlatans the genius of this place the south american hero this is it we've come a point much understand something we always are on the verge of something. called culture. shock. we're starting last with.
