10:00 pm
doing the whole middle of the road six. going to out. was. u.s. army whistleblower chelsea manning is back in jail after refusing to testify to a grand jury in a case against wiki leaks. venezuela's opposition leader blames president maduro for an ongoing power blackout in the country while the government points the finger at washington. as figures show a sharp decline in british tourism to the u.s. well we find out what could be behind the trend you can take a look at that on our website. yeah can understand why people think and then make sense like the guy is probably not to. profess to get smarter and more. closely.
10:01 pm
as mentions for the latest on the stories you can head to argue dot com so with us now for the big picture. on this week's show fox news and the white house which is the dog and which is the tail and who is wedding home but first health in the headlines said news this past week about two of television's most welcome faces are you at risk of stroke or cancer or diabetes i'm holland cook in washington this is the big picture on our team america.
10:02 pm
just like fifty thousand other people in the united states each year this week i was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. now normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging but i'm going to fight this and i'm going to keep working and with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also i plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease truth told i have to because under the terms of my contract i have to host jeopardy for three more years. prime minister justin trudeau tweeted to his countrymen keep fighting alex canadians are rooting for you alex tribeca has been hosting jeopardy since ninety team eighty four and his news comes on the heels of another shocker playing wealthy rebel dylan mckay and beverly hills nine
10:03 pm
o two one zero luke perry became an instant heartthrob in the ninety's more recently he was a t.v. dad for three seasons on riverdale and in july we will see him in quentin tarantino's once upon a time in hollywood this past week luke perry died after a massive stroke just fifty two what is a stroke and what if anything can you do to avoid one let's ask dr john dombrowski man one of this area's top doctors by washingtonian magazine the website for his washington pain center is d.c. pain doc dot com dot welcome back if you're having this. news is shocking i've heard stroke described as your brain having a heart attack obviously not a clinical definition what is happening when someone has a stroke i kind of like that definition though because that is exactly what is occurring the blood is not getting to the brain just like we have a heart attack the blood is not getting to your heart causing obviously a lack of oxygenation we have
10:04 pm
a lack of oxygen you have to shoot damage and then you start seeing the effects of a stroke such as facial drooping weak are your maybe your speech isn't correct all those things are early signs that must be treated as quickly as possible commercials i've seen for a prescription drug war in that for many warning signs and what if anything can we do to reduce the risk of stroke and one thing you should understand i mean there are eighty eighty thousand people eight hundred thousand people that have stroke either recurring or are every year is the fifth alone cause of death one stroke is going to court every four seconds someone dies of a stroke every four minutes and there are things that we can do this we can obviously prevent hypertension wait wait game. exercise all the smoking all these things consoling prevent your risk of having a stroke. what is a minute in these signs and symptoms but they go to the doctor or it might resolve on its own where you the blood vessels cutting it we can elated to get blood the blood back to the tissues and it is the herald you need even though it's resolved
10:05 pm
this scheme attacked go to the doctor and get it resolved to get at least looked into because that could be a early warning sign could you have one and not know you had it and you would probably know you know my vision was a little off my speech was a little off my balance was a little off these little neurologic symptoms should always be addressed oh it passed i'll be fine no you are fine thankfully but go to the doctor make sure there's nothing else that is more dangerous to come while the doctor is in i want to talk about something that strikes this layman as an epidemic if you watch other cable news channels sort of the networks evening newscasts it's commercial after commercial urging us to ask your doctor about name of drug ask him if it's right for you and i'm just thinking if aliens on distant planets are monitoring our t.v. channels to learn about our species they must think we all have diabetes and based on the other commercials or seeing for what we're eating they might not be surprised are we becoming diabetes nation and what's the cure yes we are i mean
10:06 pm
unfortunately diabetes is a problem of success we are now becoming fatter than ever we are lack of exercise diet is very poor and there is a genetic profile which you really can't change but the again one way of taking care of this get someone to the stroke is seeing your physician getting. yearly exams diet exercise smoking stress there has a big thing with weight gain getting a good night's sleep helping with your stress even those very simple is a really great way to start again nine hours last night and i felt like a million bucks there isn't great when it does happen now in layman's terms what is diabetes and. you've told us why we're at risk but what's happening in your body when you have it sure will it is overwhelming the paper switches the organ that creates insulin to bring the sugar level down we're consuming so much that we override that insulin and hence it starts a spillover in terms of too much blood sugar or glucose and this has
10:07 pm
a real big problems afterwards it can cause again our problems in terms of atherosclerosis coronary disease stroke problems or in terms of your brain diabetic neuropathy i don't feel right so all these things are massive problems that can be treated by simple diet and exercise friend of mine lost one hundred pounds and says he is no longer diabetic was exaggerating kenya curious self cure is a very strong word i think you could see well managed and you can really get off your medications because of that weight loss so that's great cure i'm always cautious about that you know he could always pretentiously have again diabetes and is somebody whose blood work says pre-diabetes inevitable to get that big d. not necessarily again you want to the physician and you're getting your blood drawn so that is the first thing you are being proactive they can say you are at risk let's monitor your risk what can you do to change your risk and then hopefully they can bring that blood sugar back to where it's appropriate so you won't get the big d. if my doc is watching he's already applauding because you've talked about weight loss
10:08 pm
twice or the kinds of things that you've already said pertinent to avoiding cancer so cancer is certainly could be one thing and there's could be a genetic predisposition for cancers environmental factors but trying to live a good healthy lifestyle again smoking cessation diet and exercise minimal to low alcohol consumption are all healthier things what about these ads you hear on radio and t.v. you get direct mail pieces about getting a virtual body scan is it worth the money and would something like that have clued in luke perry that he was at risk or alex trip back so. it depends what kind of scans that they are some of the scans where you would scan your carotid arteries you know looking for vascular problems or your heart you know that certainly are early harbinger that is one possibility of these other total body scans that you have i've seen patients actually undergo on necessary surgery took to find out that they really have nothing there we found something on x.
10:09 pm
very we better do surgery and you're crawling you're running up the cost of medical care making patients all nervous and they actually found nothing false positive exactly why we havea opioids undeniably a national crisis to the extent that oxycontin maker purdue pharma is reportedly moving to chapter eleven because so many lawsuits over fatal overdoses and now we're hearing about what's called the florida shuffle rogue rehab facilities prospecting for patients sometimes with brokers some of whom themselves are former or current users the troll social media and actually show up at narcotics anonymous meetings to fill beds which you guessed it are covered by insurance as described this scam is disturbing but is it more of a symptom than an issue you deal with the insurance industry a complex every day and certainly providing rehab is well intentioned but how do we fix this system this is this is criminal they're using patients to get more money
10:10 pm
for you know on this system this is a thirty thousand dollar rehab to fifty thousand dollars the insurance companies are paying them money as they should and these patients are just being used their pawns so hope for the state of florida i think is looking into that and again what they're doing they're churning the system the minute you get rehab and get kicked out you know you're clean the reuse you again let me find out your insurance is those eight hundred numbers call up for addiction they will check your insurance do a biopsy oh you go here and there this is criminal this is not the practice of medicine it's a conveyor belt it's very sad hey f.d.a. has approved jenny system depression. hold it is the chemical cousin of that special k. that the kids are doing it clubs and raves here into this to talk about this well i don't know if i've into this but i can speak she was an anesthesiologist so what this ketamine is it's from the one nine hundred sixty s. it's related to fin cyclizine which is p.c.p. and l.s.d.
10:11 pm
and we found out in anesthesia in the one nine hundred fifty s. this is a wonderful anesthetic we use all the time and have a seizure for very sick patients and we've also found out probably about five to seven years ago i.v. infusions of the medication can not only help with chronic pain but also people with refractory depression so this is a great start forward dr john dombrowski i feel better already glad to help thank you for stepping into the big picture that comment out yes there is a bat phone between fights news and the white house according to an explosive report in this week's new yorker news about nudes next this is the big picture on our t. america. it
10:12 pm
is absolutely no doubt that pakistan has such a crude proven track record sponsoring to ensure they do something so that's evidence that we have not received any evidence then we also were joined then we are for investigation of any kind and we have more heard anything about. this is a stick from the water bottle phone in the stomach of the fish the brand is sponsor of the coca-cola company which sells millions of bottles of soda every day the idea was that let's tell consumers they're the bad ones they're the litter box they're throwing this away industry should be blamed for all this waste the company has long promised to reuse the plastic. seats to cook absolutely.
10:13 pm
that seems. their plastic the only thing you don't lose that special projects funded. on the new best that is the end of a footy team the fun now the mountains of moist only grow hi. what's new is and what's noise it's not your imagination now and our news organizations playing it straight or are they pandering to our predispositions so we'll be brand loyal and they can sell many more commercials let's ask margo sus prophecy a lecturer at american university in georgetown university media studies profession or chris chambers welcome back both of you thank you and the new yorker magazine article that has the media buzzing jane mayer describe observed that as the
10:14 pm
president has been be. set by scandals congressional hearings and even talk of impeachment fox has been both his shield and his sword the white house and fox interact so seamlessly that it can be hard to determine during a particular news cycle which one is following the other's lead the playbook is unsurprising given the players among former trump. month former fox news or is now at the trump administration we have or should i say. who was the former fox news co-president more recently director of communications and deputy to housing and urban development secretary ben carson previously a fox news contributor and national security advisor john bolton a fox commentator k.t. mcfarland was deputy national security advisor for all of four months and former fox news anchor and state department spokesperson heather nauert was appointed u.n. ambassador until she withdrew after reports or immigrant nanny elected
10:15 pm
a work permit margot what's wrong with this picture well i think that we have to look at the core values of journalistic society professional journalists ethics code and one of the four is be independent act independently and i think that that's a real question about tween the trump administration and fox news now that being said i want to let the trump administration and fox news off the hook a little bit here and that it's not as if this is new to the trumpet ministration or that this is unique to fox news i mean a.b.c. news employees george stephanopoulos who everyone probably remembers from one thousand nine hundred two is a key campaign advisor for bill clinton and wrote speeches for him so this revolving door is nothing new in washington d.c. it does seem as if the trump the trump fox news nexus is a special brand of politics here inside the beltway if only by sheer body counts and chris this fox news white house door swings both ways after serving as trump's
10:16 pm
communication. director whole pecks moves to public relations at fox news and next national security adviser sebastian gorka keeps popping up on fox news we're coming up on correspondents' dinner scenes and i will confess i used to attend the nerd prom during the eighty's and ninety's from reagan to clinton i was not as wary as tom brokaw who stopped attending because he viewed breaking bread even in that collegial way as crossing the line but is not what this new yorker report chronicles something else entirely yeah holland it's really showing the. i would say the maturation but the really meat of this movement away from say you know the anchors we talk about the bridge bears and the and those those guys and women at fox versus the host driven shows and the pundits that they have on there that's where you really see
10:17 pm
a lot of the interaction with the commentators the pundits that get recycled through there and all the sudden they're in the in the administration it's no it's really no surprise then that when the president sometimes takes his policy cues from say fox and friends in the morning the more you know colloquial collegio blue collar is shows they're not from not really where we are now. in terms of entertainment and he's taking his cue from there because he started off you know in reality t.v. it's basically reality t.v. for conservatives the resemblance between what you see on the lower third of the screen and what shows up in his tweets is more than coincidental but presidents have always had friends and foes in the media think citizen kane. partisan newspapers touted james madison and andrew jackson margo how does the volume and valar city of today's media imperil news consumers ability to
10:18 pm
separate the news from the noise well i think it's. really difficult for news consumers today to to do exactly that which is to separate what's news and what is just information or entertainment and let's remember news organizations are guilty of giving out a lot of click bait in order to generate revenue in order to get clicks and to get eyeballs on videos and online stories and still attract revenue from advertising so i think it's a tough time to be a news consumer especially when you have this constant bombardment from social media the twitter feed which updates literally every millisecond and then on your facebook feed what's real what's news what's a legitimate source what's a bot now we have to be concerned with so i think it's tough to be a news consumer but i still think that there are traditional outlets out there even are online only publications which news consumers can turn to to ensure they're getting objective independent coverage that they need to govern themselves in a democracy well today we are standing in front of a fire hose you know it's
10:19 pm
a torah but that legacy media landscape. you know uncle walter the evening news seems quaint to the nineteen year olds you teach today chris what do they make of this fox news white house thing well of the almost news it sounds terrible hala but almost like it's not new it's almost expected it's like ok i think the they're looking at politically they expect conservative report from fox i think what they're dismayed about is that it's crossed the line into a sensationalism dissin from ation things like that again and then a fracture within the network where you have the anchors giving out the new. you know reading the news reporting doing what they're supposed to and then you have that host driven stuff that takes up most of the problem and i think that as
10:20 pm
a loser. again i mean you know there's a look at the brit beers and see ok well this is somebody you know the we can emulate but then it stops there right and i think that's to say that well timing is everything just as a point of view becomes more of what's presented as news newspapers business model is in a tailspin there's been a belt tightening at the networks even some of these pure play digital media have cut back lately and opec union is less expensive product to produce than information you just round up some talking heads margaux are economics costing the consumer news content absolutely corporate media ownership and consolidation in this country this is my area of expertise and i say put it on my tombstone corporate media ownership and profit driven news is what is destroying helping to
10:21 pm
destroy communities understanding of what's happening at the local level at the state level and at the national level and i think that this is a time where americans have to start asking what is their source of information and they have to start turning to outlets that are not putting profit first now i can say that and turn to pro publica perhaps the national out there which is doing great investigative journalism but for many local communities we're starting to see increasing news deserts they don't have access to that information and it's troubling that's where newspapers used to be and certainly cable news isn't filling the void in broadcast news isn't filling that void either because they're not getting a profit from it it's expensive to do good news or it's expensive to do investigative reporting and when you can put up a headline about kim carr dashin or put up a headline about whatever trump tweets that's cheap to do looking like their latest that's right and it's but the you know it might be entertaining for some but the reality is that behind the scenes what's happening is a loss of
10:22 pm
a really informed allow. actor and those on things like democracy this is a huge a huge issue that's going to be with us as long as we continue to see profit driven media margot and i met on t.v. here in our boom bust with bart chilton just as it is can that take over was being announced and if there's going to be fewer newspapers feeding the wire there's just less information out there and well the moment to go i referred to news as product in this new yorker story describes a rupert murdoch's vision for the fox news channel he was plotting back in the early ninety's as a publisher of tabloids and oss working class football fans chris fox news channel has recently dropped the fair and balanced slogan but all along didn't fire as we report you decide montra simply mask news with an agenda by giving the like minded comfort with their predispositions well yeah i mean what you had was this perfect
10:23 pm
marriage whether it's heaven or hell i don't know but rupert murdoch with this kind of fed has shut fetish about the quote working class you know as if he knows really a part member that married to roger ailes is vision of fear and kind of the leak to them fear driving it so when they meet together it's this perfect you know like chocolate and peanut butter or kind of match and it's almost fiendish in simplicity. you do you scare people a lot of it is said to say a lot of it has been fear it could be other things as well as in a phobia racism etc etc and you mix that together and you've got this this perfect stew that can be fed to people and then they reflect that back and you know it's a money making venture as well so what's not to like yeah it's really not what you
10:24 pm
know i mean even roger ailes was you know. when he started out i mean a lot of his thesis of the world was that richard nixon probably would have been president for ever had he had a fox news around sure and now we're seeing you know. posthumously his thesis possibly play you know well you are absolutely right about that go raimi because even before even fox news was embarrassed by glenn beck he had a feel for that pinpoint that fear he'd say the world will end tomorrow then i say tomorrow and the day after tomorrow no tuesday a week from tuesday but what's funny about glenn beck though is that he has kind of come back to kind of a populist kind of position on this so he's not exactly in the same bit with with with with rupert murdoch on this so i think because i think he probably saw that you can get kind of far afield from the empowering the every person sure
10:25 pm
even even at fox news well he still had the ratings when they can do but the sponsors have left so it's all about the dough margaux your advice for news consumers today my main advice and i wouldn't i don't want to say turn to one outlet or another because i know if people really stick to the one they like they'll say oh that's just liberal or conservative bias on ovation that's right my advice is if you're reading a story we're only your opinion is shown or if you're watching a story that's a concern and you need to find a new source remember that news is supposed to be able to give you multiple perspectives not just two sides of an issue but three or four sides of an issue with context and expertise from trained journalists so if you're looking at a story and you're only seeing confirmation of your point of view that's a concern and i wanted to just i would just say to consumers is there another source that you can turn to where you can get the complete picture news isn't supposed to be easy and as you know citizens in a democracy it's not supposed to be easy for us you know to look at different
10:26 pm
viewpoints and consider. there and challenge our politicians on what they're doing but that's what news ultimately must be doing and consumers have a role to play in this as well so what you're saying is question more question marks but also pay for sources that you trust and be curious thank you marcos and chris chambers for stepping back into the big picture and to read more read the making of the fox news white house in new yorker dot com and thank you for watching the big picture if you see it somewhere else you can also find r t america t.v. channel three two one the super cool pluto t.v. one three two and dish network it to eight zero and all of our shows are available anytime anywhere on any device at youtube dot com slash the big picture r t m holland cook in washington back here same time next week and in the meantime i am
