the media needs to polls in the first round of ukraine's presidential election so far he's taken thirty percent of the vote. for global internet rules and for governments to play a more active role in regulating the. pressure mounts on the canadian prime minister's newly released documents implicated in a major political scandal. and then monday evening here in moscow this eleven pm on the news from ozzy
4:01 pm
international first off ukraine which is set for a second round presidential runoff with almost all the votes counted from sunday's election comedian and political newcomer have a lot to me as a lenski is well ahead in the polls with over thirty percent of the vote he'll face the incumbent president petro poroshenko who's trading on just fifteen percent looking at why support for the current leader appears to applaud it. they counted on him gave him all kind of help and thought he'd take the x. soviet republic somewhere new the result roughly eighty five percent of ukraine voters want to show petro poroshenko the door the western establishment is baffled for them choosing between someone as hated today as the chocolate king pershing co and funny guy all of them are zelinsky aka is a president is a tough one backing the winner of round one who has no political background at all is like opening pandora's box well look at who he's been destroying with jokes for
4:02 pm
years the names are all they're way behind him now how's that for a political background. and we get him to. bring back crimea. ok this is. what about his own sitcom launched in two thousand and fifteen selenski character just a school teacher on a fast track to be president turns the whole system upside down. just like the way maybe he never even thought of it and maybe his sensation came about because someone once randomly told the man why don't you give it a try in real life anyway world leaders should probably start watching out for comedy shows or at least avoid petro poroshenko mistakes like making
4:03 pm
a ton of promises you can't keep petro poroshenko came to power after the mud on revolution he was loved in america and europe ukraine was then desperate for a strong new leader what did the people hope to get from mr poroshenko a country with no corruption less poverty a proper alliance with nato and the you and to the civil war in ukraine's east and hold men abroad he lost a lot of support by failing at all that with probably one exception ukrainians can stay in the you for ninety days without a visa the president did his best to cut off all possible ties with russia and that was the essence of his campaign but russia has been waging a hybrid war against a country for five years and crane is under the threats of fools going to war with russia the tactic didn't really work in the country where millions still speak
4:04 pm
russian and have relatives there it looks like it probably won't help mr poroshenko in the run off either almost fifteen percent is just too big of a margin even in round one all the hugs and kisses from nato's most powerful people have a sell by date. well this year's ukrainian elections seem to have gained less attention in the west than they did in twenty forty the countries also received less u.s. financial assistance for the vote than they did in previous years political analyst martin summers told us why he sees the decrease in western support for ukraine a significant. open the amount of money that they've committed to the election suggests that they're losing face in the puppets in ukraine. is clearly a busted flush and they don't particularly want to waste anymore time and energy trying to keep him in power no doubt they will be beating a path to zilinskas door at this minute hoping that if he does win that they will be able to influence in the directions they would like to see but they clearly
4:05 pm
clearly if they don't see it was one of the candidates think that's hopeful for ukraine and hopeful for the general situation because we do need you know independent people who go a bit and independent doesn't suit and maybe he's going to come up with some more sensible policies than we've seen in the last few years we'll have to see it's not clear. governments are being urged to play a more active role in policing the internet as facebook boss mark zuckerberg calls for more regulation online he says he wants mechanisms put in place to reduce the amount of harmful content on social media platforms is also calling for measures that will help to ensure the integrity of elections and also protect users personal data mark zuckerberg to bounce represent a radical departure from the original vision that he had for facebook. i'm jewish and there's just sort of people who deny the holocaust very much i find that deeply offensive but if the end of the day i don't believe that our platform should take
4:06 pm
that down because i think that there are things that different people get wrong we don't check what people say before they say it and frankly i don't think society should want us to freedom means you don't have to ask for permission first and that by default you can say what you want this is really about our mission and our philosophy not about just kind of some short term business decision i really very deeply believe but we are best serving the world and best delivering on our mission to connect everyone by continuing to push in these environ. and push for as much expression as possible who would have thought that it could come to this face book begging governments to tame the wild wild web to police censor and control it to think it all began innocently people want to go on the internet check out their friend someone at the website that offers that i am talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online it was so
4:07 pm
simple then a place for teenagers to share their relationship status for friends to share pictures announce parties keep in touch but somewhere along the line facebook group dark gathering and selling people's personal information bots fake news election meddling censorship and suspensions targeting innocent people at times and the videos streams mass murders the new zealand shooting rapes snuff videos it seemed facebook c.e.o. did nothing but apologize now it was a big mistake and i was a mistake and it was my mistake and i'm really sorry that this happened and i'm sorry and i'm sorry for it it seems zuckerberg is tired of keeping facebook his own platform clean in now wants governments to do it ministries to police
4:08 pm
the net with rules and regulations. the saying goes the route to hell is paved with good intentions though something tells me. less interested in good intentions and more concerned about bad press and profit but hey who knows he talks so pretty. by updating the rules for the internet we can preserve what's best about it the freedom for people to express themselves remarkable he's actually saying that government censorship politicians deciding what you can and cannot do or say will somehow make the internet freer when has that ever happened before in fact one of the scandals facebook was embroiled in was its wholesale cleansing
4:09 pm
of pages and news feeds it didn't like in full was alex jones even for a while artie's math ik media all for math expedient including the now were taken down for no reason other than pressure from pro-war think tank and i'll leave you with more from fianna messages are slick filled with graphics with grand. left leaning americans getting news from social media and the videos have been viewed tens of millions of times billions of times thank you apparently it's all for you your freedom your safety so here it is a corporate billionaire with dirty hands asking politicians to censor and regulate the web you don't get five hundred million friends without making

a few enemies he once said but it seems circa berg is heading towards having just a few friends and millions of enemies. another day another vote for british m.p.'s in parliament this time on a series of alternatives to to reason maze and battle plan the p.m.'s divorce bill's already been rejected three times but a fourth vote could still happen but said it wasn't just bricks it that's left some politicians wide eyed in westminster this monday. there. are those activists tryptophan the house of commons public gallery to raise awareness about climate change the stump was aimed at m.p.'s to remind them that there are big issues other than that which need tackling over the protests inside parliament out of the way m.p.'s have been voting on alternative motions to to resume a's breck's of plan they include remaining in the european single market or

negotiating a permanent customs union another would see the british people have the final say on any withdrawal agreement and finally a motion making sure the u.k. doesn't crash out of the european union without any deal on april the twelfth the results from the ballots are expected to be announced in a little under two hours time aware across it for you. videos emerged online purportedly showing a group of protesters attacking a convoy carrying venezuela's self-proclaimed leader that the opposition figurehead was reportedly on his way to speak at a rally in a deprived part of caracas. was the local media reports military police officers who were loyal to president can be seen in the video protecting what goes convoy the protesters held insults at the country's self declared leader and demanded that he leave the most populous district in caracas to earn as much blumenthal going to his thoughts on the footage
4:12 pm
. it's ironic to see government security forces actually protecting a figure who's calling for the government to be toppled and who's actually attempting to fragment the security services from within it's also ironic because we constantly hear about venezuela as some kind of ruthless communist dictatorship but here you have a situation that certainly would not be tolerated in the united states or other countries where someone who's leading it who is protected by the security services the government he's trying to take out what kind of dictatorship is this well apparently it's not a very effective one and what's happening here is really interesting. this is where nicolas maduro his base is this is where he. actually lives why is why don't they or why is he in a government stronghold because the u.s. wants him to get arrested to create a provocation that's why he's there. and the canadian prime minister is facing

renewed pressure to resign over a corruption scandal after a secretly recorded telephone conversation between senior officials was leaked suggesting that justin trudeau tried to protect an allegedly corrupt company from prosecution the allegations surrounding the engineering giant a s. and c. level and go back to twenty fifteen when it was charged with. bribery and fraud to secure contracts in libya since i was out of patience surfaced several senior government officials and also have stepped down in the gaudio canada's top civil servant is heard saying that is firmly against the company facing prosecution on several occasions. michael i have to say in this conversation and previous conversations that i've had with the prime minister and many other people around it it's higher really inappropriate and it is political interference on the canadian prime minister denies any inappropriate behavior concerning the scandal while stressing that the

promotion of the country's largest construction firm was in order to protect jobs more on this now live to toronto and independent political analyst out of something and i welcome back to see how this telephone. escalated claims is the best way of putting it the government tried to shield s. and c. level and it's a big employer it's important to canada's economy how big could this scandal. right now yes you are you're live on r.t. international and hear me. yes i can hear you now there was some interruption ok would you like me to ask the question again i was just going to ask how big this scandal go s.n.c. level is important to canada's economy but this is a mess in the prime minister's office. well it's certainly a mess in the office and i think the we haven't seen the end of it but not
4:15 pm
necessarily just because of the s. and c. scandal. which i think suggests more than illegality that the the prime minister is incompetent so far he hasn't gotten anything done and perhaps with a better political strategy he could have gotten. that s. and c. level and protected and wilson. placed in an equally important position in cabinet that she would not have spoken out or created the rift with the prime minister so there is a level of political incompetence here because many prime ministers are called to do what to do it was called to do to protect jobs at a canadian company and frankly the allegations against. her since eleven and from two thousand and fifteen fifteen really go back to episodes that occurred before two thousand and eleven because. the contract with libya work with the gadhafi government which ended in two thousand and eleven so. i think we're not
4:16 pm
going to see the end of it but there are many today was the first day of a very unpopular tax the carbon tax i thought it was an april fool's joke it's not it's true and then we have. policy disasters all over the place canada is losing clout with china with the united states. that's just the beginning he's lost cabinet ministers over there so yes it's been damaging for his reputation but is the s.n.c. level an issue enough to i can actually cost him his job as prime minister. that is a been thinking about that and. he i don't think he intends to resign over it i think perhaps more ministers may have to quit and more key people around him have to quit before this happens also the question is who will replace him ahead of an election this is an election year in canada will take place in
4:17 pm
october. and there are no clear winners in the opposition as well they say the conservatives are gaining in the polls but conservative leader shear is not very popular and he has a rather extreme views and the n.d.p. leader to a bit to the left of the liberals. also has the material particularly in quebec so it's not clear. how this could play into the liberal strategy because they have they have to think of the election now so it's not even a matter of just to do the resigning it's will he run again. at this point and i mean without some of the aides he's had to get rid of like but for example his main secretary and adviser he's
4:18 pm
a weakened strategically justin trudeau says he was protecting jobs but how much of that do you think is down to playing to the public for a bit of damage control. i've believe he truly did think he was saving jobs i mean there since eleven is a huge company it's one of the world's largest construction firms so there is that and i think the company has threatened to move they have their documents suggesting was going to move to the united states if this prosecution continued and there was a way to allow the prosecution to be deferred so not fully perhaps into that in the spirit of the law but there was a mechanism that could have been used and that's what wilson are able refused to go to to do but she evidently knew that she was being targeted because she taped a conversation that we just heard
4:19 pm
a few minutes ago. and asked the x. attorney general face prosecution for leaking that tape. i don't think so not now she's not the one under fire right now and that is just it's just introduction has to worry about it right now i don't think she has anything to worry about indeed she could potentially run for prime minister i think you has a shot at a much bigger role in the future she has held her end of the law completely and in fact that's perhaps. justin trudeau has lost huge reputations because he portrayed himself as a feminist and as a defender of native rights. wilson ribble is both a woman the first. native canadian attorney general and a woman so she is fully she should have been preserved and honored but big
4:20 pm
for her then occasion to that to her role instead she was demoted and that i think is the big issue that caused this whole problem political ineptitude. seems like a rather messy way to head for high office but ok we'll keep watching that for now in toronto in the sandro brunei thanks very much thank you. and international chain a fertility clinic has been slammed for helping hundreds of australian couples choose the gender of their children the procedure is banned in australia itself was carried out in the united states. outrage over the latest move toward designer babies the world's first genetically engineered baby out and you get down the slippery slope of does genetically altered designer babies includes designer babies with the gene editing procedure clinics can alter a child's d.n.a. that allows them to change physical features such as i color and even a certain illnesses a ban on editing human embryos was established in twenty nine countries around the

globe the u.s. too has for strict rules on research but gender selection is not prohibited scientists brian huntley explains concerns surrounding genetic engineering. the risks are so hard right now i know that you know that's that's why the wired genetic engineering has been going on for humans because in animals you get you get situations where you get a thirty going to rio's that are considered good enough to implant in and out of those you get two or three that can survive for a few weeks and one that is considered viable or just on the on the air edge of being being ready to do that in a way that is reliable enough. for human use human rights lawyer jennifer breeden who's a politician and activist exchanged views on the issue. we're not talking about getting a vehicle or buying

a car and be able to design your car we're talking about a human life a child a baby and what this opens up to the danger that this opens it up to where society now things that they can basically just pick and choose i mean it even said that the science was going towards a way not just of eye color and of gender but also of skin color of race and so while we could be afraid that there might be another area in society out there actually i have a lot of mixed feelings about this issue because you know on one hand a lot of this genetic testing has been used for women who can't have children i guess they do the genetic modification. and then in that case she's able to have a baby the other hand is what does open it up to and hand spins for you have this concept of designer babies not only does that create a dangerous precedent for motherhood as an example or for parenthood as an example but it's now glorified glorifying and placing his glorification so to speak on and
4:23 pm
on the baby's appearance at birth what more is that going to create say a parent paid for something in the eye color wasn't quite what the parents wanted and now the child going to be forever shamed or living in shaded on the converse that the parent gets everything they paid for and the qualities of a child how is that child going to raise knowing that to treat others with respect and dignity based on their character and their personality because they're going to have been raised knowing you know we paid for you and we got you exactly the way we wanted you i don't want this issue of designer babies to come to fruition because i feel that would. it would essentially be what professor stephen hawkins argued that we're creating this super race which would add more inequality into the world but at the same time if this is a medically necessary procedure for a mom to have her child what's wrong with that i just think the president this creates is very troubling. specifically in the science community and in parrot head

and in the family system as a whole. president ruling party a major blow in local elections the electoral commission has announced that his party has lost control of the capital and also istanbul thousands of opposition party supporters have been out celebrating in both cities however the party is reportedly planning on challenging the results in the country's population centers alleging that have been widespread voting irregularities despite the fact the ruling party and its allies still came out on top nationwide taking over fifty one percent of vote president both of them. the results show that in these elections as has been the question of the november two thousand and two election. as the a. once again comes. to a little political analyst use of aaron told us he believes the party's done relatively well given the turkey's economic woes. c.h.b. had a very good strategy going in they changed it up
4:25 pm
a little they're normally recognized as a left party and they took a step to the right during the selections we've seen them go out and embrace the conservative electorate you have to realize that the party's been in power for seventeen years now it's a party that had up to fifty two percent of the vote at one time in we see at this election that there are votes around forty five percent when you look at the political conjecture of the country over the last two or three years you see a coup attempt in two thousand and sixteen the turkish lira has dipped over thirty percent recently in the last year the economy has slowed down after a period of high growth so there is an overheating of the economy when you take all these into account forty five percent being the top parties still a very good result everyone knew that. there were going to be a very tight race but we need to realize that there is three hundred thousand votes that. were ruled invalid last night that the party does plan to contest so we're
4:26 pm
going to see if these votes are going to be contested in kind of change the result who knows that remains to be seen. and that's the news so far this hour thanks for watching the next update from it in just over thirty minutes time. what politicians do something to. put themselves on the line to get accepted or rejected. so when you want to be president i'm sure. more so more want to. have to go right to the press this is what the four three in the morning can't be good. i'm interested always in the waters in the halls. or sitting.
