7:30 am
away the hours obsessing over the fallout from the muller report wondering how many games the warriors will lose on their way to another n.b.a. championship and taking bets over who lives and who dies in the avengers and game of thrones the world is waiting for us to catch and the raw reality for many of our brothers and sisters living under the sun of the united states of america's comeback hard to knock us out of our pop culture haze with the recent viral video of the vicious police beating of fifteen year old luke raul in broward county florida and just what agree just acted deluca commit to mitigate a blast of pepper spray to the face and having his head bounced off the concrete a few times well according to the arrest warrant affidavit while the police were cupping another teen for trespassing to look at picked up the arrested teen cellphone and then according to two officers who assaulted him belated to his body and began clenching his fists. and that my friends is apparently was an up or two grown adult male officers with biceps to fear for their safety from this young
7:31 am
skinny black teenage child in a red tank top holding a cellphone. and it's this kind of insanity that needs loud independent voices to help shine a light on and cup through our pop culture haze so that we can find real solutions to end the racial and class division in the us but far too often the voices of our leaders come from the hollow halls of privilege wealth and academia far too disconnected from the street level reality of the struggle so today let's throw out the status quo for except believers and thoughts and give voice to the voiceless as we start watching the hawks. it's. good to see. you that i got.
7:32 am
welcome everyone to watch tyrrell been through and joining us today to discuss the luger case and his new book we speak for ourselves a word from forgotten black america is authored the watkins the always a pleasure having you on thank you for having me so deep i want to start men now thankfully due to the outrage in social media and the million of eyes the just watch that video we saw that one viral the instant the charges have been dropped against the luke lucas as they you know he's not going to face any actual charges because originally they had him on for like resisting arrest because he was trying to move his hand to keep his head from bouncing on the pavement as they're doing it but here we are going looking at another video of white officers beating a black teenager down what are your thoughts on this latest incident this was from . what these people thought is like come to set a loss for whereas because he's a little kid he's
7:33 am
a little kid and. you know it's this you know all of these districts are like implementing these these body cams that's supposed to prevent these things but it's still a test same. race is evil energy that is just like these guys take out into the streets with them when they put lease is no way no one in a right mind should ever or whatever treat a human being like that that you don't see a human being you see you know a living and breathing punching bag and it's truly tragic i mean and thankfully the you know the viral the social media the outrage over this like you know help everybody jump on me even like le bron and steve kerr of the war the coach of the warriors even so this is ridiculous what happened this kid. when you look at that case and you kind of also touched on it in your in your book. you know how our social media helped give voice to agents of change that would normally be ignored due to their socio economic class so it's crazy because this is
7:34 am
a situation where it could possibly work video is going viral everybody sees it now it's putting pressure on politicians in the higher ups in the police department to do something about it so they got a chance to get on top of this before it gets really really really bad it's a good way bad way the bad thing is you know the trauma that comes from seeing your family your friends or your self having your head against a curve of rest of your life you know is going to be talked about for a long time some people are sharing their video for support and then some people are sharing their likes and their like being exploited because this is what everyone's talking about so it's like it's a double edged sword it can be great and it could not be great one another example is the case of a police officer williams in baltimore everyone shared a video where he walked up. to a guy made a show and he literally just starts punching them in his head like they have say
7:35 am
a couple words back before and i guess maybe like some part of his training he didn't understand and learn that freedom of speech was something that we are supposed to practice yes in this country but you know he was able to get a get fired charge pressed against him well you know you you you are an embodiment of the freedom of speech because you know the books that you write in the. social media you express your you know you have someone i think people can look up to for being something truly practices for your speech. anything exactly you know your book also looks into the issues of things like you know proximity to the issues and how many i going to ask us how many of the most popular leaders and activists they . you know live in the metaphorical gated communities in ivory towers far away from the blight that they rail against. can can can an activist and a leader lose credibility through success. yes no because it
7:36 am
depends on what they do with their success so if you get their success you use their success to lift as you climb elevate other voices elevate other people get resources and support over to cause the causes that you know actually work in the had on the right if you just elevate yourself why using the stories of the people pushes you into higher levels then you know you just you're not activists you just. you're just a paper activist and you know you're a poser and that's that's what we've been seeing like a lot of large is going to do you think there's more of that kind of paper activists than actual people out there are put in work trying to change a community so. i'm not the person i'm not vul i'm not a voice i'm not the voice. i've been in a lot of circles where there have been some people who do great work they do great
7:37 am
work and i know of big name activists who are aware of people to do this work but they don't use their platforms to try to elevate that i'm not saying you supposed to jump out to be somebodies p.r. firm i'm just saying that it's like you know there's a space for i think social media has been. has created it like well given a lot of people who really understand how social media works to create these huge platforms and they talk a lot but like if there's no direct service if there's no action if there's nothing . no type of quantifiable goals or examples over a love that we can see that matches their rhetoric then it's just it's just rhetoric you know that's one of the things that's interesting too is when those you know when does raising awareness when is that not enough because it seems like right now everyone is aware so shouldn't everyone is aware everybody keeps talking to me about microaggression and you know why people walk up to me and tell me about their privileges they like tackle me in history like hey i know i got privilege as well as you know i don't like being thank you you know what i'm saying. but
7:38 am
everybody's aware we need some action and i'm not talking about a march i'm not talking about a meet up i'm talking about you know hey i work in journalism i work in television you know let's bring some people to the studio and show them you know this is a career this is what it's like this is how i got into it this is like something real oh and what a resume how do you do how do you create construct their resume what is job at it what is how do we how do we get the basic skills we need to be able to get gainful employment that we came to stay away from the streets also the streets won't even be a good idea because this so many other opportunities that we can get to because we've had these examples that we have that assessed ability and we can make that happen that's great you know here's the thing to the interesting you know you've got the new book you know we speak for ourselves the word from forgotten black america and it's interesting because you've had this very you bet a lot of success as an author you know and you've got experience and that success
7:39 am
is i think brought you to very different you've experienced two very different worlds you have the world that you grew up in that you live in the day to day but it's also about success has brought you into the kind of the ivory tower gated community got that kind of world as well how do you straddle those two word worlds when you're writing a book like like the one you just wrote. i think so one i'm still learning is still a process but what this book. i just got to listen you know i got opportunity to take my lens. and talk about how i view things from coming from the street and then being in a flashy we're not going back to the street but then at the same time just listen and like you know like back to. the quote that i used in a book she tweeted we don't need a voice for the voiceless you know you can pass that might this people capable many people out there capable it's i want my own stories if you give them or if we gave
7:40 am
them the opportunity to tell these stories there's a we have access to media which you guys do here a lot which i try to do in my writing. and it expands the narrative is no one contemporary black experience is complex and diverse is in the experience in this country and we have to we have to acknowledge that you know we're not the same thing i love some of my friends who matter but like i'm not going to say should i never filled out the paperwork i don't know to core values. news stations to add to my low what they're. my title but it's also not fair for me because just be group with me and stuff but i'll ask it me people do to all of the time and especially if you're any type of public intellectual any type of public person. you know you know the police officers can be like a holes and they want to throw you in a box and it's just different and then you start to amazing things as
7:41 am
a you don't hear very often a you said you want you want to listen and you want to learn you don't hear many people say that as much as they should to be in a voice exactly you know listen and learn and use always becoming always a pleasure having you on all right as we go to break watchers don't forget to let us know what you think of the topics we cover the facebook you tube twitter and see our poll shows that are coming up parties dan brings us the latest new controversial real estate will bear president donald trump's name and then lamela media joins us to discuss. the new charges brought against big pharma states that. the new way of poc back in the sixty's. happens they eat
7:42 am
themselves to death yes and it's really kind of violence actually hard to watch because. just keep on eating in black. the way jamie diamond themselves to death. and they themselves perish and take their entire country down because they can't stop their. minds are like goldfish in a bag of food just keep themselves to. facebook and google started with a great idea and great ideals unfortunately there was also a very. they are constructing a profile of you and that profile is real it's detailed and it never goes away turns out that google is manipulating your opinions from the very first character
7:43 am
that you type into the search bar it will always favor one dog food over another one comparative shopping service over another and one candidate over another they can suppress certain types of results on what they think you should be see if they have this kind of power then democracy is an illusion the free and fair election doesn't exist the more we give. the sooner we're all. all right augers let's kick off the second half of our show today look at
7:44 am
a new controversy out of the golan heights region of syria. i'm sorry i guess now would be israel golan heights region of israel according to the u.s. state department where the and the new controversy comes from the narrowly very narrowly reelected israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu as he declared that in honor of u.s. president trump recognizing israel sovereignty over the golan heights he will be naming a community there after him r.t. america correspondent dan cohn has more. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says president donald trump will have the distinct honor of having an illegal settlement in his name. i mean the beautiful go and it's all israelis were deeply moved when president made his the stork decision to recognize israel sovereignty over the golan heights therefore after the passover holiday and then to bring to the government a resolution calling for
7:45 am
a new community on the golan heights named after president donald j. . this comes weeks after netanyahu one record fifth term as prime minister and set another record becoming the first israeli prime minister to win an election while facing criminal corruption charges in february israeli attorney general announced netanyahu would be indicted on multiple charges though the united right party has put forward legislation guaranteeing him immunity from prosecution if he promises to annex the occupied west bank that could be part of trump so-called deal of the century that his son in law and special adviser jared cushion are set to unveil a cushion or has a personal relationship with netanyahu dating back to his childhood all but giving netanyahu a direct line to the white house on the other side of the golan heights the syrian army announced that it once again found u.s. and israeli made weapons left behind by armed groups including al qaida israel has
7:46 am
long supplied anti-government militants in syria with weapons a program that remained a secret until twenty eighteen syrian government hasn't commented on netanyahu his announcement but it had responded to trump's declaration with a vow to recover the occupied territory the same way it was taken by force in washington dan cohen r.t. . you know my friends the old adage better late than never is definitely apropos to washington d.c.'s response to the raging opioid epidemic that has ravaged its way across the united states this week u.s. president donald trump is set to speak wednesday at the prescription drug and heroin summit atlanta and this comes as. rochester drug cooperative and some of its cartel bosses i'm sorry former executives were piling brought before the marathon this week to base charges for a pension only violated federal for the them intentionally violating federal law or conduct laws in miami are to you america's john how do you know as the story. that
7:47 am
. we will end this terrible menace we will smash the grip of addiction we will make our cities safe our communities strong and our future brighter than ever before as one united nations we will work we will pray and we will fight for the day when every family across our land can live in a drug free america strong words and big promises from president trump today at the annual r x drug abuse and heroin summit in atlanta if you don't know what it is it's a big meeting of drug rehab and recovery centers academics doctors law enforcement officials along with state local and federal agencies all meeting with the goal of tackling america's drug addiction problem the president touted his administration's efforts battling the opioid epidemic that has ravaged the united states and while
7:48 am
progress is being made the numbers are still troubling from one nine hundred ninety nine to two thousand and seventeen more than seven hundred thousand people died from a drug overdose sixty eight percent of drug overdose deaths in two thousand and seventeen involved in opioid also in two thousand and seventeen the number of overdoes deaths involving opioids was six times higher than one nine hundred ninety nine give me an idea of the trend one hundred thirty americans die daily from opioid overdose and the cost of the crisis in the u.s. from two thousand and one to two thousand and seventeen has been an estimated one trillion dollars and it's not just the street dealers and narco traffickers that are making money off the crisis. but the big pharma companies that are raking in millions of dollars producing and distributing opioids like oxycontin hydrocodone and fentanyl being credibly strong painkiller that's used in heroin and a driving force behind many opioid deaths in recent years we are holding big
7:49 am
pharma accountable they should be accountable and they did give to my campaign i don't want their money. they gave to a lot of other campaigns that's a problem this week the d.a. arrested the c.e.o. of rochester drug cooperative and prosecutors charged him in the company with conspiring to distribute drugs conspiracy to defraud the united states and failing to file suspicious order reports r.t.c. admitted that it violated federal narcotics laws by shipping dangerous and highly addictive opioids to pharmacies knowing the meds were being sold and used illegally here's the catch our d.c. signed a plea deal in which it will pay a twenty million dollars fine and submit to five years of supervision by an independent monitor and exchange for the government holding off on prosecution r.d.c. reports more than a billion dollars of annual revenue there are other civil suits targeting big pharma companies in the united states including mckesson amerisource bergen and
7:50 am
cardinal health but these companies are among the top fifteen fortune five hundred companies in the u.s. with billions of dollars in annual revenue that means a lot of power a lot of resources and a lot of lobbyists on capitol hill for watching the hawks john hardy r t. who are joining us today to discuss the latest litigation involving big pharma and america's opioid crisis is lyondell of why no radio on america's opiate crisis is lyondell of why no media man you know is one of the interesting aspects of this story is that the prosecutors are not only charging the former executives of rochester drugs. operative but the company had so you know as we saw the new york times reporting the company was conspiring to distribute drugs conspiracy to defraud the united states and we're going to bio suspicious order reports lionel's a former litigator what do you make of these charges. and is a former prosecutor i'm telling you right now twenty miller will drop the whole
7:51 am
thing i had clients who would say i'll pay millions or i'm sure i'll chop oh would say can i get that deal how much you want how many billions do you want it you know tyro there's something here we've got to stop for a second this is different than anything my philosophical non prosecutorial belief is always been the drug laws were ridiculous that freedom and to to to incarcerate people who are sick whether it's marijuana or cocaine completely defeated the purpose this is a different story these drugs are like a imagine saying i'm for the second amendment but i'm against having a howitzer we talk about fenton will have you heard of car fenton ill this is the new one listen to these numbers a hundred times stronger than fentanyl five thousand times stronger than heroin and ten thousand times stronger than morphine wow so what we're dealing with is
7:52 am
something and by the way much of it's coming they suspect from china so all of you civil libertarians stop for a moment think products liability think you have something where you think like that woman. who had the boiling coffee from mcdonald's she didn't know it was boiling people don't understand we say opioids and you hear people say you know my life was given back by virtue of pain management stop the presses this is something that is guaranteed almost to make you. addicted but lethally addicted so it's old tyrrell this is a different story let me ask you what do you think about twenty mil how much did they make how about disengaging their profits how much did this company make twenty mills a drop in the bucket make
7:53 am
a forty mil that's how it oh i completely agree with you logs this is it just is absolutely ridiculous and you know what it smells a lot like to me it smells a lot like big farmers taking that page out of the wall street executives playbook after two thousand and eight hey you know what slap on the wrist pay a fine that's peanuts to us and we get to go on no one ever has to serve any jail time i mean i think you hit the nail on the head too when you said look why don't why don't cartel bosses who are selling their cocaine and all that can they make that deal where they say hey rather than face life imprisonment can i just give you twenty million and then we're off the hook it's absolutely ridiculous that that's what this isn't really justice this is a speeding ticket at the indy five hundred. you know when you put something out into the you let's say you have you know years ago there were these baby cribs that kids could put their head through and get stuck in and choke and suffocate they didn't just pay people off they stopped it when you had the you know the pinto when when when things this is a products liability case this is having
7:54 am
a nuclear bomb that you go oh no this has no i want all of my civil libertarian friends to have to this is not about smoking weed this is not about doing a few lines this is about putting something in into and by the way the reason why these people have to take it is because as addictive as these lower versions of fentanyl are once you become immune to the power you need more and you need more and you need more so to think that this idea of we're going to get tough with twenty million dollars a slap on the risk and you're putting something on you know i might my question tyrrel is cool i'm all for pain management who ever says i'm going to give you something that is ten thousand times stronger than morphine what pain could anybody and i'm sorry i'm not a physician what what could you possibly ever have to endure that there's
7:55 am
a risk of dying the government these drugs the drugs i hate to say it when we were kids the stuff on the street this isn't reefer madness this isn't this is nothing you've ever heard before this is a catastrophic existential threat to humanity these are nuclear bombs in a pill this is products liability i i respectfully submit to you judgment i completely agree plus let's also remember to not agree with you on the holding of corporations responsible for this because like you said it's product liability at the end of the day because this is something that this was their dog. giving this to them this was stuff advertised in magazines this wasn't a guy on a street corner in a darkened valley saying hey come over here and try this this went through the legitimate routes and people got addicted and then got cut off and that's where you saw the rise in heroin and things of that nature so i think absolutely these companies need to be held accountable for what they did to the american public and i got to say thank you so much for coming on today absolute pleasure having your
