to shape out just to come out to it and engage with equals betrayal. when so many find themselves worlds apart we choose to look for common ground. and we have breaking news from moscow sheremetyevo airport so it could be of at least one person had been killed in a major incident at one of moscow's main international airport a passenger plane that was on fire was forced to make an emergency landing it skidded along the runway before flames engulfed the aircraft and medics are saying that it could be as many as thirteen people that died but that has not been very
2:01 pm
flied just yet. the thing this is. the place to found yet. he. so far we have a confirmation all for one person who died as the result. of the incidence
2:02 pm
and as many as thirteen that could have a perished according to some reports. numerous others are injured after a fire engulfed a plane and we're talking about air flight flight. this year's fourteen. sukhoi superjet says j. one hundred plane had taken off from sheremetyevo airport in the russian capital and it was due to head mirman sc in the north of the country now the airplane departed from wall skoal at. six pm. according to preliminary information it was trickle wiring on board that ignited as the airplane was taken off and that's once again according to a source another source says that lightning struck the plane while the plane was
2:03 pm
trying to say off the ground and it was later forced to certain back after an on board fire alert the play then lost a radio connection. in complete silence with absolutely no direction from airport control the weather conditions around the airport. were very poor with a heavy rain the plane only managed to land at second at sands and pictures show flyer engulfing the aircraft on the ground and a huge plume of black smoke rising into the air the airline has set up an investigation into the cause of the incident and it's now confirmed that the fire has been completely put out moscow douma dead the airport is receiving additional flights diverted from sheremetyevo transport ministry officials are already at the scene with safety checks starting with the plane now
2:04 pm
a criminal investigation is all soul being launched in relation to the incidents. there were total of seventy eight people on the plane one person has confirmed the numbers had been taken in hospitals with various degrees of injuries and the rest all the passengers on board that plane had been taken to safety so they're all ok at the moment now a correspondence from our sister channel the spanish was on board a different plane waiting to take off a chair made to airport. and he also saw the burning aircraft and said this is what he told us a little bit earlier. in you know we were on board a plane at sheremetyevo airport we were flying to helsinki although our flight has now been canceled we're sitting really close to the plane which is completely on
2:05 pm
fire the flames are huge it's very difficult for the emergency services to tackle the blaze they told us that the airports closed no planes are leaving all arriving we're waiting for more information and maybe will be evacuated. ok let's bring in a guest now holly's a retired group captain jones is on the line. we've seen the pictures of the certainly the back half of this plane engulfed in flames we don't know if this fire began in the air or whether this was from the impact of landing what you what are your first instincts what professional instincts tell you having seen the video. well thank you very much for having me on your program. and i'm sorry it's a very unfortunate incident and rick you're asking my opinion. i personally think that this you see usual culprit is electronic cables
2:06 pm
short circuiting so this could well be an electronic fire caused by that whether it was on landing i don't think so because i believe. it appears that the plane caught fire in the air and then the pilots tried to land. did manage to safely put it down on the ground having said that i must. you know offer my kudos to the crew banished to handle this because if the inferno had been allowed to continue our vile it was in the air i don't think a single person could have escaped alive so the very fact that they brought it down safely in a way that at least out of the seventy eight majority of the people had been. skewed and i must also put in my congratulations to the firefighting crew they have been a tremendous job but. to be seen what was the actual cause of the fire but as i said earlier the usual culprit is the electronic short circuiting. when you are
2:07 pm
a pilot up in the air when you have you said it's the usual culprit you find out there's an electrical failure just how we could tell you for this is this on a scale of how bad things can be a few up in the air in the cockpit is that something you're well prepared for is this one of the worst case scenario. frankly speaking all the drills that make you go through. when you are preparing for flight during your flight training and also in simulators this is one of the most horrifying accidents that can arca. the worst thing is that when an electronic fire picks place it also. makes your communication system totally coupled to your cut off from the ground you are unable to communicate to with any other agency so you are totally on your own and you have to handle but that now there are number of options available to you but the best is to try and ensure that you
2:08 pm
retain the control of the aircraft because the electronic fire once it engulfs you would get also. the control ability of the aircraft in this case it appears that the pilots there managed to. control ability and managed to bring it down. you said it the fact that they were able to get it back to the airport to make it to the landing strip suggests that they had a good degree of control. what then makes you think could have caused these huge flames that we seen gulf in the back half of the plane what one gets to suggesting now that could have been on impact do you think that may have started in mid or. that possibility is also there but you please remember that in this particular accident all the elements appeared to have been against the ill fated aircraft because the weather was terrible the visibility was bad it was raining and runs managed to have this impact probably detail section the fire engulfed in little i
2:09 pm
mean this is what appears from the video or the exact investigations the investigation is going to the board is going to determine whether it was this was the result but having said all that you cannot believe rule out criminal activity which may also have been a cause what's going through your mind as a pilot when you realize as a problem even the standard last communication you're going to have to head back to the airport at this point what are your priorities trying to establish some kind of communication do you speak to the stewardesses to try and settle down the passengers you're thinking about how you're going to land what your priorities are and what order. depravity priority is safety safety and specially for when you're flying an airline your priority is the safety of the passengers and also. if you have lost total
2:10 pm
communication then you're on your own if you have communication there are people to guide you people from the ground people from the airline expert pilots flight safety for the personnel who get on line and tell you what to do how to handle the emergency but in this case if there is total loss of communication you're absolutely on your own if the pilot and the copilot so between them judging from the experience it seems you see you have to make a decision that safety comes first safety of the passengers and of course the craft and you also have to ensure that when you land you land in a manner that you don't cause more casualties on the go. around sort of these are all the things which are going on in your mind but of course the top most priority is the safety of the people who are onboard who are in your custody and you're responsible for their lives. yeah and i just want to point out that the airline itself flawed is stressing that these were technical problems they say that if that
2:11 pm
have caused this accident you talked about the safety of your passengers though i imagine you must be hugely reliant on the stewards as your desk is on board people will very quickly start to panic in a situation like this and imagine they are your kind of the extension of your trying to control the passengers you would imagine you are usually reliant on the stewards. absolutely you see normally. clearing conditions those are carried out and you have good rely on your given crew also to ensure that first of all they do not panic themselves they're meant in control of their nerves and then of course they have to control the passengers because if the passengers panic if this panic. sets in it is going to be terrible for you to control as the captain of the aircraft so you have to rely on your cabin crew it's a teamwork and if you manage to keep the nerves cool and calm i think half the job
2:12 pm
is done. and i just want to mention as we see the landing it looks like the the the undercarriage of the plane. collapsed i mean just how an unusual is it an incident for something like that to happen we know that they had some kind of problems with control. we hear according to the airline that it was a technical failing of some kind how unusual is it though for you know for the undercarriage to collapse how bad things have to be for that to happen. yeah normally this doesn't happen. i'm looking at this particular iraq said and the undercarriage does not collapse unless the infirm nor the fire is so severe that it has you know blown the controls totally and the undercarriage on impact has
2:13 pm
collapsed and. aggravated the situation so it is it is rather unusual that is why i'm saying that the possibility if how afraid it may be of criminal activity cannot be ruled out. i think at this point it's worth pointing out everybody reacts immediately emotionally to scenes like this the pictures are so emotive and the so horrific the goal and goal thing that the flames engulfing the plane. but the statistics suggest otherwise don't they in terms of flying though isn't it still the case that you know flying is probably the safest mode of transportation i keep hearing. you know all accidents. are very traumatic by the ones which involve fire they're the worst because the passengers can see the flames and specially of that engulfing the main body or even the section then people tend to think that this is the end of
2:14 pm
the world this is. sure that scenario and that is where you know people can really become panicky they can lose control they can start screaming shouting or trying to rush for cover or relieving their seat and in this particular situation if people get up from their seats and move about especially in an uncontrolled fashion they can also change the center of gravity and. reduce the chances of the pilots retaining the controllability so. judging from what has happened here i think probably the passengers have been able to you. keep control of their lives and for that the credit goes to the crew especially the cabin crew also. some many thanks for joining us here in our to retired air force captain holly is our guest. now let's cross a life. for our correspondent. who is at the
2:15 pm
airports at the moment so eager you are there what is happening at the airport please bring us the latest. well first and foremost roman a lot of security personnel and really very very few people you can clearly see behind me this is a major hub this is a major airport in moscow in a massive city and so it looks deserted and that's because it has been almost completely shut down only one runway is working and it is an emergency. it is emergency landing strip so there you have it and we've seen lots of emergency vehicles as such as ambulances and police vehicles rolling into in here even like even like twenty minutes ago that was happening as to what happened on board of that plane it is still difficult to well paying to
2:16 pm
a full and decisive picture we don't even know the exact number of injured or dead i mean the official information puts the death toll at one person at least one person at the same time we have reports that suggest that more than ten people may have died as the result of the emergency as to would cause the tragedy again lots of mixed messages some reports suggest that the. flights that the airplane was struck by lightning shortly after takeoff and then it was forced to well to make a crash landing and other reports suggest that it was caught on fire only when it touched down. the runway with the tom and that's why it is a blaze apparently the shasta's may have penetrated the fuel tanks and still got caught fire and hand the big massive black. smoke so this is what we know so far also quite disturbing pictures not only in terms of the fun of it in terms
2:17 pm
of when it comes to survivors because many of them apparently wore carrying were rolling carry on luggage there are duffels and valises and so this is this goes against an emergency landing protocol because well if and if an emergency situation arises with half the plane on fire imagine getting out your luggage from the top shelves it in the it inevitably causes a jam and a stampede so this may have contributed contributed to the death toll to the number over the total number of victims of this of this tragedy i should say so this is what we know so far we're going to stay here at the airport and will be i will be bringing you all the latest igor we also an update for you there too we do know that according to the russian health ministry two people are now in that critical condition they have been taken to the hospital and three people three of
2:18 pm
the passengers that so with all they were injured they have been treated right at sheremetyevo airport and they refused to go to the hospital and they are now going to hold off for us at the sheremetyevo airport thank you very much for that. just to bring in a bit more information. if you wondering why the the port seems so quiet is because they have canceled a lot of the flights many have been diverted indeed more than fifteen that were incoming determinative have been diverted to nizhni novgorod that's no small inconvenience that's just from a quick search four hundred kilometers away from the russian capital but it's all hands on deck at this point in terms of the planes going to land somewhere and some are going to. another major airport but some having to go much further afield to other cities in the surrounding vicinity and this is the reason why we bring you breaking news this hour this video of an aeroflot.
2:19 pm
plane that land was just taken off i should say from sheremetyevo airport at around five fifty pm local time aeroflot flight one four nine two a sukhoi superjet it was heading to more unscathed didn't make it much more than around half an hour into the flight before it had three. reports which been backed up by the claims of air of flight that this was due to technical failing that it returned there also were other reports that a lightning strike might have been involved what we do know for sure is that the plane returned and it landed miraculously landed in good enough condition for people on the front half of the plane to get out within seconds and which is incredible when you can see at least half the plane absolutely engulfed in an inferno. the cabin crew just going on to you know automatic at this point with their training in those doors were open the ships were released and
2:20 pm
people and within a matter of seconds this is incredible when you look at the this picture right now of it landing in flames we don't know at this point when the flames began and this is going to take some time to uncover all the source in air filter is saying that the airplane. landed it actually impacted the tarmac the landing strip three times and this is when the engines caught on fire and also in other sources say that it was actually a passenger while the play the flight was in the mid air the passenger looked outside of his window and saw that the airplane was actually on fire and he alerted the airline crew and this is when the captain of the plane decided to take the plane and landed at moscow's sheremetyevo airport and then on impact engines caught fire as well what had actually happened what caused the fire was
2:21 pm
it's in the a lightning strike. electrical wiring well we're going to find that out like don of our correspondent as for a major airport said a russian investigative committee had already launched an investigation. the manufacturers of the airplane are also part of the investigation so this will probably will find out the results of what had actually happened very soon as all parties involved and you factures the airline the crew they're all present and all the truth sooner rather than later know there's lots of information flying around and not all of it will be accurate officials are. very important to give accurate statement they support and indeed the as you mentioned amongst all of those looking for the for the answer is the airline itself has launched an investigation into what caused the incident. therefore it confirms the report about the engines catching fire in flight su one forty nine two from mosco two months
2:22 pm
after landing the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing due to a technical issue the fine is been put out the injured are receiving medical aid the passengers had to use emergency exit slides a committee to investigate the reasons for the crash has been created here floats crisis stuff and been assembled. russian president is also already aware of what had happened and he had instructed instructed all of the authorities involved to make sure this incident gets investigated thoroughly and properly like anybody needed to the president to say that obviously this is going to get investigated meanwhile a correspondence from our sister channel artsy spanish while he was at sheremetyevo airport on board a different plane waiting to take off and say he saw the burning aircraft with his own ice and this is what he told us
2:23 pm
a little bit earlier. this week of almost in. a plane at sheremetyevo airport we were flying to helsinki although a flight has now been canceled who is sitting really close to the plane which is completely on fire the flames are huge it's very difficult for the emergency services to tackle the blaze they told us that the airports closed no planes are leaving or arriving we're waiting for more information and maybe will be evacuated . it's a delicate balancing act to this point when you get a disaster like this we heard released and it was pretty basic they were sticking to very very simple facts and let's be honest they're thinking about their interests at this point as well as. many other considerations they keeping it very basic at this point would be reliant upon witness testimony as well though you have to also bear in mind just how people are effected such emotional times as to what exactly they think they saw and what they know will try and compile all the facts for you to inform us best we can look at some of the information we know we're watching now is the incident of an aeroflot flight for mind to this is
2:24 pm
a sukhoi superjet s s j one hundred plane this flight that taken off from sheremetyevo airport here in moscow it was heading to more demands of the russian city in the north of the country the flight departed from the capital at around five fifty pm local time in the evening according to preliminary information reports of electrical wiring on board igniting that would. actually collate with what the saying that this was a technical failure this is yet to be confirmed though from of the sources that have been claims reports that a lightning strike. caused this accident. the reports coming in as well that the plane was forced to turn back after around thirty minutes because of an on board fire alert then we know that communication was lost between the flight's traffic control this is one of the worst case scenarios as we've heard from some of
2:25 pm
our guests retired pilot so far and it's all down to the pilot and his cabin crew to keep everybody calm and to try and get this this plane down in one piece we do see that they did that amid ferocious flames the plane somehow monies to land they had enough control to land it back to port but the damage turned melissa evidence huge flames at least over the back portion of the plane huge. rooms of thick black toxic smoke and we see people who were on board within seconds of to getting out of the emergency chute sliding down and running across the tarmac and from what our correspondent was saying some reports that some of them were taking their hundred kids with them which is remarkable and wouldn't of in any way assisted situation but you can only imagine what they would do in that situation and they don't think this is also an element of people just go on instinct grab their possessions and flee for safety and of course we're going to have to wait and see what information coming from the fischel source says it's very early stages of
2:26 pm
an investigation by the investigative committee and indeed by the airline itself just to just to add as well always have been confirmed all of the crew are alive the do know that for a fact at the moment and we've had reports one fatality confirmed medics who were on the scene suggested that that death toll could be much higher but we mean we can't say that with any certainty but that's information that's come from medics who are attending those who were on board the flight. ok watching r.t. international i'm neil harvey alongside the running costs of breaking news story coming from sheremetyevo airport a fatal accident involving an aeroflot flight that was destined for more months to stay with our courage we're going to take a short break. you

know world big part of the lot. it's time to wake up to dig deeper to hit the stories that made stream media refuses to tell more than ever we need to be smarter we need to stop slamming the door on the shouting past each other it's time for critical thinking it's time to fight for the middle. the troops the time is now for watching closely watching the hawks. is this is a sticker from the water bottle found in the stomach of the fish the brand is part of the coca-cola company which sells millions of bottles of soda every day the idea was that let's tell consumers there are the bad ones there the litter bugs are throwing this away industry should be blamed for all this waste the company has long promised to reuse the plastic.

that soon. especially. on the i knew that is the end of it for the teeth but for now the mountains of moist only grow higher. all. are. coming welcome to worlds apart seventeen years after the united nations has the universal declaration of human rights in many parts of the world it's still a declaration rather than leave reality and that's not only because upholding human
2:29 pm
rights is hard work for many societies but also because of the hypocrisy and politics associated with the issue to divide between preaching and practicing out of reach to discuss that i'm now joined by peggy hicks a director at the u.n. human rights office thank you it's good to talk to thank you very much for your time. now you gave a number of interviews and we talked. about the advent of the post human rights era and before we talk about these new phase let me ask you about be human rights era which supposedly preceded it how would you define it chronologically and how was it different from what we see around us today well i think i have to clarify and i am not an alarmist about where we're heading on human rights i think what's happened over the course of the seventy year history of the universal declaration is that there's been a global understanding of certain basic rights fundamental rights that all people have and that we've been working together over that period to try to implement them
2:30 pm
and i think globally we've made enormous progress and i always say that i'm very glad to be a woman today rather than a woman in my mother's generation or my grandmothers and i think my daughter will live in a world that's that's probably better off for women's rights than than my generation was so it's that type of progress that we see during the human rights era and yet it was also during the period. wars were launched on false pretexts we saw legalized torture research secret prisons the. dehumanization of abu ghraib i mean all those abuses that were supposedly committed by human rights respect and actuaries abroad rather than at home i wonder if let's be clear i mean there the basic premise of universal human rights is that human rights abuses occur every place and anybody who tries to say there are countries that are rights respecting and others that are not isn't isn't really taking taking account of that reality.
