a weekend of deadly exchanges which see more than twenty palestinians and four israelis killed in large scale air strikes and missile attacks. russia's foreign minister and his u.s. counterpart will discuss the venezuela crisis later on monday after what appears to have been a failed coup attempt by the washington backed opposition and a lot of american country. you're watching r t international coming to you live from the russian capital where it's just turned four pm welcome to the program. the remains of all forty one people killed in sunday's plane fire in moscow have now been recovered from the charge wreckage of the air flight aircraft these are the latest pictures from the crash site during its attempted landing the sukhoi superjet burst into flames after its tail struck the runway the plane was carrying seventy eight passengers and crew

thirty seven people survive the disaster they are being treated for smoke inhalation burns and shock people have been laying flowers and tributes at sheremetyevo airport and at the airport in more months where the plane was supposed to land some people came to simply pay their respects here's how the tragedy unfolded and just. warn you you may find some of the scenes upsetting. that the. plane was in the air i saw a white flash a most of the morning. we certainly had the windows i just turned my head and all of
9:03 am
a sudden i saw the burning plane with huge plumes of black smoke and. the like to be out yet. with an investigation underway three main theories are being focused on pilot error systems malfunction and bad weather but the latest here's more on gusta. there's a lot of testimony a lot of witness accounts that are coming out now important not to jump to conclusions but the movie reliable sources the captain for example he has. made comments he said that during the takeoff there was no hint of trouble reading was nominal was functional nor
9:04 am
a hint of trouble and all of that changed just after takeoff as they were ascending climbing higher and higher they were struck by lightning. the lightning caused wrecked havoc on the system on the aircraft's electronic systems seemingly all of them for example it should circuited the radio communications gear and even the backups didn't work. we had no communication we managed to restore it through the emergency frequency on the second radio station and it was intermittent that is after turning on the transmitter it was only possible to say a few words before losing contact and having to reconnect with dispatches helped us they gave us directions to get to the runway that was only a part of it because the lightning strike took down other systems including navigation including pilot guidance and all of these systems help
9:05 am
a pilot land an aircraft especially nowadays when there's so complicated so. difficult to control manually what the pilot was left with was manual control he had to land this aircraft that had almost all of its systems offline and was incredibly heavy because the fuel tanks will fall. ill advised to land an aircraft with a fuel tank for what generally do is they circle above a city or an airport burning that excess fuel off making the aircraft lighter so it's easier to land for whatever reason they decided that they couldn't do that they couldn't. ford waste time they went for the landing and unfortunately as you see the. tragedy struck the bump the rear of the aircraft bumped against the concrete and the fuel tanks ruptured fuel spilled and poor all over the back section of the aircraft given the heat here the pressure the speed the friction no
9:06 am
surprise that it ignited it ignited and that is when the true horror began because all of these people they thought that they had made it that they had landed and suddenly they were surrounded by an inferno i mean the stewardess spoke about how the illuminators in the back of the aircraft are melting how people were absolutely terrified of what was happening we have heard is passengers expressing gratefulness thanks to the cabin crew to the stewardess colleagues who stayed behind she said she grabbed people by the cuffs of the necks and dragged them out of the aircraft there's another should in the back is it's a very big story in russia he tried to force open a door in the back of the aircraft and he couldn't do it he tried and tried to give up and he started pushing people from the back in order to get them to the front to hurry them up he unfortunately perished he was very young in all forty one people
9:07 am
died in this tragedy thirty seven made it out and out of the seventy eight passengers and crew that were on board but as i say it could have been even worse. i'm grateful to this pilots they've waited to crash land in this city and saved lives perhaps there was pilot error but let's wait for the official findings things could have been so much worse. they're looking at three causes for this the first one is pilot error pilot on the qualification of the pilot perhaps have hadn't had enough try. to land this aircraft manually with it being so heavy the other thing that they're looking at is the weather how the weather may have caused this this incident and the last thing is that the aircraft may have malfunction something may have been wrong with it before it took off something may have
9:08 am
happened. in the air we shouldn't jump to conclusions the investigation is still ongoing speculate it's too early to speculate and to guess probably wait for the official findings they've recovered both black boxes and they've also recovered the bodies of all forty one died in this tragedy. we go live to david believe in aviation safety investigator for more on this now the crew say that the plane was actually struck by lightning how big of a factor could that have played in this tragedy. it shouldn't really play a large factor if the aircraft is struck by lightning there may be some minor damage to the airplane but nothing significant should happen the crew should be a part of the thing from the. get go of. the magician is very very reduction. in the certification. he's betrayed now it is going to. plane landed at least ten and then bounce back up in the air what could that tell
9:09 am
us about the situation. it tells us that the airplane may have been quite difficult to land with all the electrical problems that it has i believe the flight control system was working ok but not in the usual mode of operation so it's quite right that the investigation will take some time to look at how the pilots were trained to land the airplane in that particular software mode and the airplane should be capable of landing quite happily but overweight with the extra fuel on board all that would happen. as you just inspect the undercarriage to make sure it's ok so an overweight landing if the pilot think there is an emergency should not lead to a major problem it will delay the airplane for two or three hours on the ground was the engine is checking what it should be capable of landing at any stage even if it's takeoff weight you mention the full tanks how easy are those to rupture we did
9:10 am
see it's good along the runway. what should normally happen is if there's a very hard landing then the undercarriage should break away and that will protect the fuel tanks the airplane would then land on the engines and the tail as you saw but it shouldn't lead to the rupture of the fuel tank so maybe the landing was absolutely incredibly hard or there's a problem with the design of the attachment of the undercarriage as we sort of previous accident with the. so if it wasn't the fuel tank what could be another possible cause of that fire. well i think the fuel tank has ruptured but it should not have ruptured in the landing that's going to be a major part of the investigation and after that it appears in some of the videos that the jet engines may have kept running for a while rather than being shut down by the crew so they may have tried to stop the engines but instead it's blasting hot air out of the back of the engines which is
9:11 am
adding to the heat of the fire and it's making everything worse at the back of the airplane so that will be another focus of the investigation do you think that there's any possibility that more lives could have been saved at the end when they are still on the runway. this is what we would think of as a normally as a survivable accident so we would expect that nobody was actually physically killed in the impact on the runway itself so the rest of the design should and evacuation procedures should lead to everybody being able to get out we saw that only two of the exits were usable at the front end of the airplane rather than at least three is. i would normally expect so it's going to be a big question as to how i managed to get through to the camp in that quickly so that everybody couldn't get out or alternatively what the behavior of the passengers and crew was inside the cabin which meant that they all didn't get out in the required time david gleave aviation safety investigator thank you so much
9:12 am
for your time and your comments. thank you russia's health minister has visited the . emergency hospital where several of the crash survivors are receiving treatment artist on the corner reports from their. behind me is the hospital where two survivors are being treated in critical condition in another location the pilot copilot and a stewardess are being treated for shock as well as poisoning now in total thirty seven out of seventy eight crew and passengers survived this crash but many with serious psychological as well as physical injuries now russia's health minister says that friends and family should also seek help as many of them are most likely in a state of utter shock was not to flee gifts that you don't get that it's not just the victims that need psychological assistance but that relatives too including for example the one from on in critical condition being cared for at the institute or have them are in a state of shock they can't process what's happened now across social media people
9:13 am
have released videos of passengers fleeing the burning jet crew members quickly carried out the evacuation plan and you can see how chaotic the situation was in these videos there were also reports that passengers scrambling for their luggage also contributed to the discord now earlier today we spoke to one man who brought flowers in tribute to the airport although he had no familial ties to the victims of his own as the worker who was one of them used to it could have happened a new one so how tragic when fate takes an unexpected turn like this life is all a matter of luck and can and just like that i would like to have someone brought me flowers of something like this happened to me as for the relatives about fifty of them arrived earlier this morning from water months where the city has declared a three day period of mourning for those who died emergency services met with them at the airport to help them in the painful process of identifying the bodies of those who were lost. in.

after the first struck it hit everyone started screaming children and adults in the building collapsed nobody was able to see one another. leave it to those big of the me to the generals that know the situation to do what they know you know we can do is to cross our fingers. they will succeed we're not call many more we do trust the army we do whole benjamin netanyahu will take care of it but we are really worried from the rockets now overnight bomb shelters were opened here in tel aviv which is some eighty kilometers from the gaza border after hamas threatened that it would target the city and that's also published in hebrew the coordinates of those sites in israel if planned to attack in these include have been going on international airport and also delano where it's all is believed to house its nuclear arsenal although this of course has never been confirmed by the israeli side late last night the israeli security cabinet wrapped up with the israeli prime minister

here do you believe you're going to be you know did you storm. them i looked up from her during the clue a trick of christers. welcome back to the program with the crisis in venezuela simmering russia's foreign minister sergey lavrov is set to discuss the situation with his american counterpart mike pump a zero later on monday on the sidelines of the arctic forum in finland on the agenda will be the alleged coup attempt by u.s. backed venezuelan opposition leader won by doe at a media conference on sunday at lavrov and venezuela's top diplomat both stress that dialogue is key. we have no venezuelan partners agree that any use of force
9:22 am
circumventing the un charter and the un security council may have catastrophic consequences for the entire structure of modern global security as any nation venezuelans themselves could only decide their own fate through peaceful dialogue within the scope of because the two should this was another attempt by the venezuelan opposition's president nicolas maduro insists that dialogue remains the only option who voiced the u.s. position which says all options are on the table who believe the only way is to respect the u.n. charter preserve peace in venezuela and not violent or forceful overthrow of the regime but. meanwhile that this one soldiers have been making a display of their loyalty to president maduro burning a copy of a letter from opposition leader one point zero handed to them by some of his supporters earlier vladimir putin discuss the venezuelan crisis with donald trump by phone with the u.s. president calling the talks positive. has more on that and efforts to break that as
9:23 am
well as deadlock. what if all the key stakeholders don't only talk on the phone but get to meet maybe even more than once and actually end up agreeing on something might come pale and. don't get in touch that often nowadays but just last week they were on the phone and there you have it they're meeting face to face just a few days after vladimir putin and donald trump didn't talk for about five months after the g. twenty in argentina last week it was time to get back to business the two presidents were on the phone for more than an hour he is. not looking at all to get involved in venezuela other than he'd like to see something positive happen for venezuela. and i feel the same way so we want to help with a humanitarian basis and i thought it was a very positive conversation i had with president putin on venezuela sounds quite
9:24 am
optimistic probably even too much was president putin able to convince him speculation over russia's involvement and as well or is way too overblown wait only the day before we heard this from america's number one diplomat we need to make sure there's not an invasion into israel and yet there's been one. it took place that you wouldn't invaded some time ago the russians have now followed suit and in the meantime mr lab rob was saying this could go to. discussing the situation in venezuela but i don't see how we can find a common approach where no policies based on the principles of international law and the u.s. line is to appoint someone as an interim president in another country threaten to use military force along with choking sanctions to overthrow the congress seems. washington is trying to convince the world the way they've been pulling the strings in venezuela has nothing to do with the word coup yet as usual they're leaving all
9:25 am
options on the table including the use of force. military action is possible if that's what's required that's what the united states will do those who are not venezuelan should know is all options are on the table secretary of state is in close contact with the pentagon he was among the officials who were briefed by the u.s. southern command quote unquote on a wide range of military options as the command continues to monitor activities on the ground and as well self-imposed venezuelan leader one of like bill has been hinting he would be happy if washington stepped in militarily and you don't rule out a military intervention because it's entirely clear what the madeira regime is about anyway it's clear for him that would probably be the best case scenario after several failed attempts to get the army on his side. one of why
9:26 am
bill called himself the president of them is well three and a half months ago and time isn't on his side giving the orders as head of state hasn't yet helped him actually become one president nicolas maduro and his supporters have so far been able to withstand most of the pressure a few more failed attempts to start a coup or energize a genuinely nationwide protest may lead to second thoughts about mr within the opposition whether he'll ever choose to back down himself. that's a tough one speaking of nicolas maduro this man doesn't look like someone who ever be the first one to raise the white flag making concessions though when he's completely pushed to the wall that's more like it. that's a global news update for this hour but don't forget you can always head to our web site r.t. dot com for the details on all those stories and many more. so

you in this. for the most part when you go back a little bit when you first started working on the level of u.s. so it summits did it. scary. reagan i mean like you're literally translating the words of the most powerful man in the world did it change it that moment. i don't think i was scared frankly i don't think that if you're scared of responsibility you want to do this kind of work. it is interesting that this was the first time that simultaneous interpretation was used rather than consecutive interpretation when you first listen to the speaker and in target what he has said simultaneous interpretation was first tried in helsinki at the high level in helsinki during the meeting of george shultz and when

shevardnadze in the summer of nineteen eighty five years and years ago but now it has become rather common practice at that time it was very new i was thrilled i was fascinated not afraid not scared but certainly i felt a responsibility to say you were on board the beginning of the end of the cold war started so this is a whole process your own board where you allowed to have a political position where you are allowed to have a say in this things. in part that depends on the position that you have in the foreign ministry initially i was a member of the department of translation and interpretation and it was only later in early one nine hundred eighty seven that i was transferred to the usa desk to the do.
