all sorts of conditions really disgusting actually if any of us found ourselves in our situation we would be deeply unhappy are you surprised bill by the revelations made by these moderators. i think the big problem here is that facebook is incredibly sophisticated in the way that it can parse takes place communication and it can interpret what we're doing with our posts hidden meanings and interpret them in a very sophisticated manner it's actually quite sophisticated in the way it approaches voice communications any audio but what it comes to video it is incredibly difficult to do and they can't automate it they have to have people to do this sort of thing and given the nature of the cons and it is going to be a particularly unpleasant job i have an enormous amount of sympathy for those are going to do it it doesn't mean though that you have to make the working conditions poor as well and i don't think it is 6 ball for the suppliers that facebook have
4:31 pm
given this work to being giving the sort of treatment that they appear to be having and i think that the staff are very justified in speaking out yeah i mean i mean what i mean how shocking did you find some of the revelations i got you know there's one person who said here that they kept trash can by her desk to throw out while she was sick since she had already used all her a lot of bathroom breaks is pretty dire isn't it if it in deed is true and obviously the fear of losing their jobs. i'm not surprised there's alleviations. aired by the moderators who are located outside of the united states. in particular and i think when you look at the. facebook future the moment. where you
4:32 pm
think about this number. the huge amount of poles these people have to moderate facebook is good millions and millions and millions of users. it seems to me. oh you're certainly doesn't. have to wake up every morning we mean. this was a riff. i think they are all do much more by facebook because in a way if all these allegations are true it tells us something about the way facebook is treated this all the subject of quoted moderation maybe if you want to do it you know i mean it is a huge issue isn't it if we you know you mentioned before that someone has to do the job moderating graphic content online it is an important job. the moderator is
4:33 pm
a power play in these circumstances made to watch 15 to 30 seconds of each video and some $100.00 to $200.00 videos a day that's got to have an impact what what can be done to safeguard these employees bill. i think it's a very very sad reflection on our society today 1st of all the people are posting content like this some of it sickening secondly that facebook has chosen to outsource this as a larger cost measure and thirdly that the companies that are seeking to starve these call centers in these moderation labs. are treating the staff so badly that very bad indictment right across the spectrum here there are steps that can be made to actually improve the working conditions and facebook of said that they will be increasing the pay of though that is not going to be immediate that is sometime in the future that this will come into effect but i think we need to have
4:34 pm
a far greater scrutiny on the suppliers the facebook the companies like cognizant who have been fingered in this particular instance there are some technology fixes as well some of the staff are complained that they end up reviewing the same video numerous times once a video has been identified as being of poor content or questionable needs to be in some way moderated a finger digital fingerprint can be made of that video and that should prevent it being reproduced it when we had the question incident there was some video and they managed to automate the prevention of postings of something like a 1000000 different copies so this can be done and it should be done more often and also facebook needs to be investing far more in the technology to assist some of these moderators and you could pixelate out faces you can do certain measures to make it more pleasant for the employees are having to do this moderation yeah i
4:35 pm
mean bill saying things should be made more pleasant one person said that they had an anxiety and depression before and after the job that p.t.s.d. . mental health is a huge issue isn't it and there are strict laws in place in other countries lying like the u.k. for example among certain authorities a police force what what do you think should be done to help these people who obviously need to do the job. and i'm talking. we're. also. only my in my company have to go through was this. those complaints to facebook what seemed to me the root of this issue is the facebook does not seem to be taking this seriously enough they have a. very small number of 1000 moderators weed out scenes of
4:36 pm
retraining without appropriate supervision without carrying photo will be we don't carry. this is. called large. well because ultimately people use strays absolutely horrified to read about the way those small directors of the treat they face. yeah i mean facebook we are you know we have to mention that for a facebook expose a person has talked about this they've said there will be inevitably be employee challenges or dissatisfaction the call our commitment to this work on our partners employees into question when the circumstances warrant action on the part of management we make sure it happens and you know facebook they've said that they've taken steps to improve its practices on the back of multiple scandals that they've
4:37 pm
had obviously this incident doesn't prove that those changes have made much of a difference in certain areas certainly no in tampa florida what more more do they need to do. well i certainly think that. i think i think folks will take a need to take more responsibility for their contractors one of the things situations that we have here is that there have been spokesman's by facebook all of their contractors such as cognizant and cognizant of dress the place up and change the condition specifically for these visits this is similar to the tactics used in the supply chain elsewhere where child labor has been sought to be eliminated from other industries facebook needs to take more responsibility for managing their supply chain and ensuring the congress and the other suppliers all pulling the wool over the roys and also pressure needs to be brought to bear on congress and themselves for doing this and using these tactics and treating their employees so
4:38 pm
badly i don't think anyone comes out of this looking particularly good. yeah i mean e.i. are cognisant they've obviously spoken out as well and they've said in their statement that it strives to create a safe and empowering workplace for it's more than $40000.00 employees in the u.s. and i colleagues around the world and they say like any large employer and we can debate whether this is true or not cognizant routinely and professionally responds to an interest in general workplace and personal personnel issues and his her senate is our tampa facility which is the one in questionnaire lowest performing is no different congress and works hard to ensure a safe clean and supportive work environment for all our associates. but what we're seeing the case studies that are coming out in the whistleblowers a speaking that doesn't seem to reflect what they say that they're doing. well.
4:39 pm
because it seems to me this truck to be free lance. bass facebook the you know this is really. doesn't look. grannie there is every. module. some of these individuals. a legal case against the contractor. being marked for the money. they actually will. yeah. bill if we look at one of the ideas suggested by face and other social media giants actually they say they're working to introduce algorithm based content into mechanisms is that going to be effective is it going to resolve some of this problem do you think. i think
4:40 pm
we're already there with text based and to an extent voice spaced posts because the level of sophistication in providing automation to moderate these types of content is already in existence unfortunately the the level of sophistication of video moderation is still very low at this current moment in time that the automated bots that they are used can really tell the difference between a dog a cat and a terrorist and a lot of advances in this technology needs to be out it will happen and possibly that point of time the staff of these centers will be complaining that they're not all out of a job instead but that doesn't mean that we have to make the working in addition to this moment in time intolerable and this is as much about the law around working conditions in a particular offices and around the responsibility that facebook takes for its supply chain than it is about technology because i don't think the technology is yet sophisticated enough to be the solution quite yet yeah and if it's not the
4:41 pm
solution we have to look at the other side of the argument in that case they do need to be moderators and we have had you know quite siri. incidence you know huge issue of inappropriate videos being posted via facebook going viral and not issue needs to be addressed doesn't it because people have actually died because of that . yes yes. yes. needs to be done. to moderate this need to be able to look very very shy and with great great real accuracy so i see do the solution for now be to this much much more. money. into the moderation process. yeah but you say they have to and it's asked a question of the inverse means no no i mean that's
4:42 pm
a question if we take that it is still bill if we take the issue of the moderators having to act far so k. i'm one of the moderators is claiming that they flag content and it's not being passed to the authorities to the police when you know allegedly it should've been that causes a problem and we've seen that cause a problem in real time with devastating effects. absolutely and i actually there is a supply chain and there is a value chain along which you can report these as a viewer you can flag stuff up to took place spoken that will accelerate the speed at which it is addressed to moderate attention and the moderators themselves can identify the type of content that needs action to be taken an action has been taken in some cases it hasn't been taken in all instances and we need to understand what the level of investment is where the things of things are falling through the
4:43 pm
cracks whether that is the congress and then what it's reported to facebook what is passed on to the authorities we need to have a far smoother and more effective means of doing this but we're not going to get away until the technology improves dramatically we're going to go away from the need for human moderators and the issue here is actually treating them better giving them better working conditions paying the more and possibly keeping on top of the supply chain and making sure the coldness and aunt cutting corners and giving them enough budget to run it smoothly so that they don't have to cut corners yeah if they were given better working conditions because allegedly they haven't been there is still this gap isn't it this is a global problem because there there are authority a the authorities should they be given more influence over social media content be are there going to be enough resources globally because obviously different countries have different resorts is to be able to cope with. problems and again monitoring or acting upon social media content that passed on. in terms of resources it is
4:44 pm
a matter for the internet company in this case for facebook true it should be sufficient resources for moderation but the other important thing is 2 first we need greater cooperation between social media companies so for example google now have a much better or the fish will intelligence to adult video content because of its experience review to. see this time to share technology with facebook and the 2nd thing is to create a greater transparency so to allow for an external body to go into facebook and all the. other it's process in terms of moderation and that is the only way we will be able to tell whether enough resources are being seen whether there are any gaps that need to be. to be filled out in the letter there is any scope for
4:45 pm
greater cooperation but unfortunately doesn't it doesn't look as if. facebook is willing in this age to allow any. degree of transparency or any external. to take place which is unfortunate ok gentleman a social media lawyer yeah i cowen and bill may present a campaign and say of the communications crisis team to i thank you both for coming on to the prime time to discuss this thank you pleasure. we'll be back in a few minutes after this break. we had one man 3540 years old. this child in the water.
4:46 pm
some 30 fisherman later in his nets. understood. that he was going to move ahead. and that many of the mfi will stop when and what the men. i believe that this is one of the therapy is to. tama. absurd to really harsh things that happen in life. so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy to confront dacian let it be an arms race is on off and spearing dramatic development only mostly i'm going to resist i don't see how that strategy will be successful very
4:47 pm
critical of time time to sit down and talk. what do you do before you came here where did you work before you came here when you lived. death row in many us states capital punishment is still practiced convicted prisoners can spend years waiting for execution but most of the time the victims' families they are very much in favor the death penalty there are some people because of what they did have given up the right to live among us somebody even proven innocent after years on death row and how many more exonerations is it going to take before we as a society realize that this is not working and we actually do something about.
4:48 pm
welcome back live from the u.s. president has reacted angrily to iran's shooting of an american friend at the strait of hormuz on thursday saying to iran has made a major miscalculation. i made a big mistake. this drone was in international waters clearly we have it all documented it's documented scientifically not just words and it made it very bad mistake ok got it and i think you'll find out and you know you'll find out you'll find. there are obviously obviously you know we're not going to be talking too much about it you're going to find out they made a very big mistake. we've heard trump indicating that not only did iran make a mistake but also hinting that this could have been some kind of human error we
4:49 pm
have him saying i would imagine it was a general or somebody that made a mistake in shooting that drone down now at this point we've got iranian officials saying that they intend to take this to the united nations to show that indeed this drone did violate their territory and the southern part of their country it violated their airspace and that it was not in international waters we have job he'd zarif the foreign minister of iran tweeting out will take that new aggression to the u.n. and show that the u.s. is lying about international waters he goes on to say the u.s. wages economic terrorism on iran it has conducted covert action against us and now encroaches on our territory we do not seek war but will is ellis lee defend our skies land and waters now at this point we've got the u.n. secretary general antonio gutierrez saying that he's calling for all parties to exercise maximum restraint now many observers have noticed that it seems like the white house is policy toward iran has zigzagged and been rather inconsistent let's
4:50 pm
review some of what has been said from the trump white house toward the islamic republic of iran if american citizens who are facilities are threatened or attacked that there will be a very strong response taking all the appropriate actions both from a security perspective and well as. our ability to make sure that the president has a wide range of options of the move that something should actually took place they should go and if they do we're open to talk to him we have no secrets and they could be very very strong financially they have great potential now tensions between washington and tehran have been rising over the last few months we saw the united states sending a 1000 more troops to the middle east region citing a supposed threat from iran is the reason. cascading their military presence we've also seen the united states blame iran for the attacks on to the oil tankers that recently took place now we have iranian officials coming forward saying that they
4:51 pm
absolutely did not attack those oil tankers and that in fact it was iranian ships that rescued the sailors and was able to get them medical assistance and relief but at this point people are watching the situation to see what will happen next trump says there will be some kind of response did not indicate what it would be saying essentially wait and see and that iran made a mistake we got a ryan official saying that this drone did indeed violate their territory in their airspace and that they intend to prove this at the international body the united nations so all eyes on this situation we've got our eyes on washington seeing what might come next from them we've got our eyes on iran and their response we've got our eyes on the united nations to see how this plays out in the international arena many many questions about what could come next as this situation develops. little commentator del darwish thinks washington has overreacted so far during this crisis
4:52 pm
with iran. but i don't see them going beyond that an all out war because i think the also our we're some kind of diplomatic efforts to go without. losing 3 is but that's on the other hand there really and it's all saw are suffering greed deal because economic sanctions are biting if the international. powers seem to be actually united in actually giving. some kind of. a warning with an assurance that if you deescalate or actually stop harassing this tank as we can perhaps i would with the americans see what we can do what you must stop. reduce the union and that's actually what the europeans not going to do. meanwhile europe has stepped up
4:53 pm
efforts to preserve the 2015. u.k. france and germany are looking to unite in a diplomatic push to persuade iran not to pull out of the agreement plus clear a small. well there's such thing as an effort by these european countries to try and salvage what they can in terms of the 2015 new kid deal that the united states withdrew from last year that also stepping up efforts to try and beat escalate the recent tensions that we've witnessed in the gulf region the japanese prime minister was in the iranian capital recently for talks as was the german foreign minister and france's announce that it is staging a high level delegation it wants them off committed to on the one hand trying to preserve the deal but on the other hand also trying to reach as the european leaders have said some kind of peaceful solution to prevent the situation in the gulf region from complete deescalating we want to unify all efforts so a process of deescalation starts there's still time and we hope all the actors will
4:54 pm
show more restraint there's still time but only little time before you'll be the most important mediator for the jews like. you are trying to do what we come to diffuse tensions open channels of communication to make sure the snow and its completion is avoidance but the fact is that time is running out and one cannot discount the possibility of war breaking out. and i'll be back at the top of the with stay with us. oh why a paradise with so much around turned into a round the experimentation field but agricultural chemicals we know that these chemicals have consequences they are major irritants there's no question otherwise why would that the chemical company workers themselves be geared up that suited up locals attempt to combat the on regulated experiments but often in day you have
4:55 pm
many of these people one foot into the biotech pharma and the other foot in the government regulatory bodies this kind of collusion is reprehensible while the battle goes on the chemicals continue to poison hawaii and its people so one has to ask the question whether there is a form of environmental research going on in hawaii whether these companies feel they can get away with this because the people have less political power. so.
4:57 pm
and very well might continue watching on since last. the counting fraud at deutsche bank is only now just being revealed. at the tip of the iceberg this terror sitting on a half a quadrillion worth of worth close to rivet of that if you mark to market would would be greater than 5 times global g.d.p. this isn't in fact the beginning of lehmann to point out. it's hard to take some from somebody if you know have some to replace. the want to do this interview today and i don't use market in that they take me. there. for years and they're in. so how can i tell you stop selling drugs if we'll have
4:58 pm
something to put the money in a box. they judge me on the way they live it's almost been basically mccullers fees for the worst do you guys know what's a good many security positions over the us you know. david jack me again. you see people get all their cars you know see you coming in the herd and it seems like the hurry up and run into the house like they don't want to they don't want to talk to your get your mail or anything like that. just want to go oh. i can do this. just try every day. and it's you know some give me.
4:59 pm
through descriptions sound up to tell using even for the owners so to choose this had food industry is telling us. what to feed our pets really more based on what they want to sell us and what's necessarily good for the. people believe we have animals that have you know diabetes in arthritis they have auto immune disorders allergies we are actually creating these problems it's a huge epidemic of problems all of them i believe can be linked to very simple problem of diet and some dog owners so heartbreaking stories about their purchase streets the larger corporations are not very interested in proving or disproving the value of their food because they're already making a $1000000000.00 on it and there's no reason to do that research.
5:00 pm
