it's a lot watching your children grow up in miss you in wave and say by day as you're walking out of the business it's just it doesn't get easier. the leaders of the world's most powerful countries need to the g 20 summit. in an effort to ease growing trade tensions and find solutions the worst slew of political crises. there are teams have been working together and they gave us great opportunity to. hear. one of britain's largest waste management is convicted of attempting to send tons of contaminated household rubbish to china wrongly labeling it as paper for recycling. and italian authorities block
2:01 pm
a rescue ship with dozens of migrants from docking on the country's southernmost southernmost coast that's the captain accused of doing nothing to help those on board. you're watching on the international live from moscow and daniel walk ins wherever you are tonight's thanks for joining. president vladimir putin and donald trump held a closed door meeting on the sidelines of the g. 20 summit in japan on friday it was the 1st time the sunni leaders had met since the publication of the reports on interference in the 2016 u.s. presidential election with the details. the big fat serious agenda of the talks between donald trump and vladimir putin didn't stop the 2 leaders from enjoying a few light hearted moments despite the delight of but they did state of
2:02 pm
relationships between washington and moscow donald trump as it seemed tried to do his best to lighten up the mood he was seeing happening a lot of her on the shoulder while they were walking towards the podium for the traditional g 20 family photo ceremony but when the ended up in the room for the formal talks the jokes from donald trump just didn't stop flowing. to these. leaders. and once again this time when this formal protocol part so to say of the bilat was over the american the wing so to say of the journalist started screaming what about the meddling moment what about the meddling and donald trump simply said he point out the russian side and said don't meddle here's what that
2:03 pm
looked like. really really really really. really really really because. the white house and the kremlin remain rather tight lipped about what was said in that room the only spilled the beans on a few things the president putin spokesperson dmitri peskov said that russia was welcoming trumps constructive approach and also the desire to improve the deplorable state of affairs and economy plus dmitri pascoe said that moscow was glad to feel the readiness on the american side to start a conversation on stability disarmament and. arms control so despite all kinds of issues between the 2 countries it is definitely fair to say that the 2 the leaders did make some headway at least on a personal level we even heard from the kremlin that donald trump's reaction to
2:04 pm
vladimir putin's invitation to attend the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the world war 2 victory in moscow was quote unquote very positive much later in the evening we saw another display of warmth when mr putin had our bilateral with the french president emmanuel macron who greeted his russian counterpart in russian. and this brings us to one of the highlights in the macron talks when the french leader decided to react to something a lot of our putin said in his interview to the financial times he believed that the liberal ideal was out of date mr america and pointed out that he believes liberal democracies can still do the world plenty of good police response was well i'm ready to discuss that with you this brings us to the end of long day one
2:05 pm
at the g. 20 more is still to come on saturday. the meeting that g. 20 is it drew attention was that a lot of prudes and the british prime minister to resign may it was the 1st time they had to since the nerve agent attack against the script files back in march last year their knees was pretty evident there was grim faced may shook hands with the russian president is a quick look at some of the other body language we've been observing so far at the fore. please. believe.
2:06 pm
me. you can pick out you can pick up on how relaxed are together how tense they are together so we can definitely see
2:07 pm
a whole bunch of things happening we can certainly see to reason may and fatima puton very they're not friends we don't need to be told that we can't see that donald trump that's that he's much closer with vladimir putin and of course we see the whole the whole the japanese chinese situation they're looking to move toward something positive but they're not there yet it's very very cold the old it's very very structured and you can't really tell if that is going to move in the right direction yet or not. lived else former u.s. congressman ron paul for some insight. thanks for joining us good to have you all following the meeting at least the russians saw it was it was quite positive they said they expected a breakthrough on control and security etc do you think any results all forthcoming or all there perhaps being a bit optimistic you know i'd want to be optimistic i think it's good and i think if we had the 2 leaders by themselves to work these things out to be much better
2:08 pm
but everybody has a political base and i know when our president comes back he has to listen and he appears a little bit to that base which might not agree with his personal instinct but i think what i heard so far about what's going on there i think it's very very good and i hope that settles things because quite frankly i think the animosity toward russia has been way out of proportion especially since the mower thing never found any coercion in a way it was all this fake collusion that's going on so i don't think there's any reason to have this hostility remain but i think everything i heard and what trump is doing right now is beneficial and i hope he doesn't get influenced by some of his advisers that i happen to disagree with. vladimir putin was also quite critical of what he called politically motivated tariffs and sanctions he said he blames them for international trade suffering is that something you agree with
2:09 pm
protectionism a threat that countries are facing no. you know as i follow the adage that the more you trade with people who are less you're likely to fight with people so i don't like tariffs and i have a disagreement with president trump on that and sometimes i think he uses that as trying to win an argument and try to intimidate but no i think tariffs are very bad and what some people don't understand is that if we put tariffs on our imports. our consumers have to pay that so it's a tax on it doesn't make any sense doesn't mean we can't have discussions and when they're out of proportion you know i have some agreement but i don't like punitive tariffs i think that's wrong protective tariffs for certain companies and it becomes you know a political football but i i think that free trade is much better and a matter of fact i think sanctions are opposite of free trade too and very very
2:10 pm
punitive and one of the reasons that we're having some problems around the world is i think they're way overused and it's a form of not a fact when sanctions become very serious it's warlike i mean i know the american people wouldn't put up with sanctions against us if we couldn't come and go as we please with our imports and exports if somebody else did that would be pretty unhappy some of the brics countries russia china india and india as well have condemned what they call you know that tourism do you think we're going to see some concrete movement concrete efforts by these bric countries to halt cooperation. well you know i am not to worry about a country that wants to be independent minded and doesn't act in concert with other people i think the issue is what kind of a policy they have and they don't want to cause trouble for other people they can
2:11 pm
do it but if there's a group the brics want to get together if they're interested in it yes but i don't think that that is the full answer i think we in the united states have a lot to say about how things work out because we have the reserve currency of the world we have the biggest military in the world we have the most wealth in the world so therefore i think what we do sets an example and sometimes i think we go astray and we don't set the example because i want to be involved in free trade i don't want to manipulate trade i don't like these currency wars that many people get involved but believe me the most powerful ability the most likely ability to manipulate currencies is if you have the reserve currency of the world so i argue for free trade and for getting along with people that's why i like what's going on at the g. 20 i think i think that little communication between trump and putin is excellent
2:12 pm
and i just wish we had more of that and less of these build up animosities and one thing if we could if if i were an advisor to the president i would say hey why don't you consider letting them know that you'd like to back off on regime change is that we're not going to be involved in regime change and. we don't want to get involved in and stir things up besides deciding who should run different countries which means we would have a different policy for syria different policy for iran would have a different different for ukraine would have a different policy for venezuela and i would think. maybe president putin would say hey that's a pretty good idea let me see what i can do for you. another meeting that took center stage was and they had a fairly chordal meeting in a sock a very unlike the meeting with the reason my brits and do you think we could see an
2:13 pm
improvement in relations with moscow or is it just to suit and also how is that going to affect relations between. trump. well it's hard hard to say what will happen happen with trump. you know i think it could be it could be much better i thought we were doing well after 989 and trump especially before he became a candidate i think he had a lot of interest in getting along with. the leaders in russia but then politics. this is why libertarians don't like politics too much we don't like too much power in politics because all of a sudden there's too many forces and one thing that they drift into is a little bit of this conflict some people make money off that you know who have a threat or a conflict here and like what's going on in iran that is motivated and backed by
2:14 pm
people who make money and unfortunately our ministrations sometimes say well you know have we should sell weapons to saudi arabia. keep this thing going on because it's good for job i don't like that. ron paul former u.s. congressman thanks for joining us the program today great to get your take some of those things going on as you 20 in a socket. and one of britain's largest waste management firms before has been found guilty of attempting to send heavily contaminated rubbish to china 7 shipping containers was stopped off to the u.k. environment agency file they contained household waste instead of paper for recycling inspectors said the rubbish gave off a pungent vomit like smell shallow drew pinsky brings us the story. ever wondered what happens to your rubbish at the end of the day or where those carefully placed
2:15 pm
for cycling in several bins actually ends up well for you is much of it was being shipped off to less developed countries china in particular but now it looks like the tight is turning. now it turns out that a u.k. firm has been caught red handed trying to use this as a loophole to export contaminated with tiriel zz this company a big waste services has been convicted after a spot check discovered a host of unsanitary items amongst the $725.00 ton load contain is that would do
2:16 pm
you to be shipped to china instead of waste paper the investigators found human waste used not bees condoms and summitry towels amongst a host of other don't pay pal items such as plastic the u.k. environment agency described the smell from the container as a moment like its welcome to the 3rd act the regulations we use were brought in to stop the west's manoli puss in the problem to other countries it was commonplace in the 970 s. and eighty's for developed nations to send vast amounts of waste to brought the waste contains offensive material likely to have been discarded by the receiving contrie at great risk and cost to the environment and people the guilt of your to justify our decision to prosecute be. big fat remains adamant that he did nothing wrong and says the real problem is actually down to a lack of clear guidance for the industry overall more acceptable levels of purity
2:17 pm
are we strongly contested this case and are very disappointed with this outcome the materials we supplied commanded market lead in prices and we match both international industry and customer standards the environmental agency has been continually asked to specify a required level of purity by both the industry and in one instance the court of appeal and the feeler to do so is a breach of its responsibilities to the market in the absence of any e.a. guidelines our products always met the standards set by our customers and provided a route to recycling in an environmentally sound manner so as countries like china cracked down on taking care of the west's inability or unwillingness to deal with its own rubbish the question is what. next challenge even ski otty high wycombe. disposing of other countries waste has sparked bitter disputes
2:18 pm
in the recent past the philippines as urged canada to take back tonnes of household rubbish wrongly labelled as recycled materials and the malaysian government vowed to send up to 100 tonnes of contaminated plastic back to australia vaughan hernandez from the break free from plastic movement says developing countries are being used as dump sites. we've seen in cases. in malaysia for example where it's important to go up in so-called illegal operations and these are called i'm greg. open burning and this opened. in a village in indonesia that's been a meeting destination always coming. from. the us. we've seen for example. once clean or cultural areas
2:19 pm
can score in the. government's hardline immigration policies are in the spotlight once again or thirty's on the italian island of lampedusa have blocked the rescue ship from docking with dozens of migrants on board the captain claims is that he's done nothing to help them but it lets them she and transitional hardens you perhaps if you want to come out and for tom de give it a fun box name. after type it off the top 1000 mid-level here the down but become. does the dotted loosen up 2nd by. the charity organization which owns the ship says they've been caught up in a political game rome itself has reiterated that the migrants are attempting to enter the country illegally with more on the story. well migration is again splitting europe and becoming the new taste for your city's
2:20 pm
hardline migration policies roman says it will not take these migrants in and it has reached out to the netherlands to become involved and to intervene and this is because the ship is saving under a dutch flag on thursday the dutch foreign ministry said it was preparing a statement and a response through diplomatic channels but it did issue a statement in which it said that it takes responsibility as a flag state but this does not mean that it will take over the mike witnessed at the same time italy's interior minister said he was becoming a straight. i have objectives a fine of 50000 euros for the ngo the detention or seizure of the ship the arrest through the expulsion of the crew and the removal of migrants from italy on board if these conditions are met i'll be happy there is a question about holland because they say they don't care that is their ship and we like the same way. those who are not entitle to international protection need to be
2:21 pm
sent back immediately on arrival at european borders without a clear perspective for such a structural solution the netherlands will not participate in ad hoc measures for the disembarkation italian authorities and also reached out to germany and france germany because the charity that is involved in pushing this ship rescue together is based there but their land as of yet hasn't given a response and france neither has come forward and said that they will be involved now it's worth pointing out that i stress for the court did recognize italy's right not to accept these migrants at the same time we're hearing from the e.u. migration commissioner there says he is closely involved and is trying to coordinate between member states to find a solution in terms of where these migrants should go once they disembark the solution for people on board is only possible once they are disembarked i hope that it will in this particular incident will contribute to a swift resolution for the persons and board e.u.
2:22 pm
countries are clearly divided over this issue the ship has been in the mediterranean sea for the last 2 weeks and earlier 2 brothers will hold on to land but there are still 40 remaining migrants on board. i women from the u.s. state of alabama who lost her unborn baby when she was shot in the stomach journal to cation is now being charged with manslaughter police believe the woman is guilty for putting yourself on the child at risk for initiating a dispute the only true victim in this was the unborn baby it was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own on born baby that child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from home and she shouldn't seek out unnecessary physical altercations. jones was 5 months pregnant when a fight broke out outside a store the shooter was initially charged with manslaughter but then acquitted after an investigation found she was acting in self-defense now police say it was
2:23 pm
mrs jones who initiated the fight allegedly in a dispute over the baby's father or the decision comes shortly after alabama or authorize the controversial abortion bill the bill was signed in may it said to be the harshest one in the united states bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy even in the case of rape and incest it also criminalizes the procedure both for women and doctors it's unclear whether the bill will eventually become law miss jones has now been released on bail but the case has sparked outrage marshy jones was pregnant when she was shot in the stomach while in a fight with another woman over the baby's father the fetus died now she's been charged with murder this antiabortion laws are unjust she must not be charged alabama is one of the most dangerous places in the country for a black woman trying to carry her pregnancy to term and this prosecution is just
2:24 pm
one more attack on the basic human rights and dignity of black women in our state. the anti abortion initiative does have the support of many in alabama who believe it should be enshrined in law and brown the move or historic stand for human life attorney believes it's unfair that a woman could be charged for losing a child. it's a very interesting case where it's linking the rights of abortion to. manslaughter under alabama's new abortion laws we're just going down. the 1st of many things which seem to be quite contradiction to the case roe v wade which is been decided by the supreme court i believe it's extremely unfair and unprecedented that they're going to try to charge her for manslaughter for the loss of her child in an altercation has not been heard before and
2:25 pm
it seems as if the state of alabama is trying to test new orders i don't think the outrage is going to have the state of alabama to reconsider those absolutely not i think in fact the outrage is what they're looking for to in my opinion to see this case possibly overturn roe v wade so i think they're counting on the outrage. iran has agreed not to violate the rules of the 2050 nuclear deal following talks with representatives of the e.u. in vienna. because i don't want to give any medium term for cars just as there are lots of factors influencing the situation but at least for now the task of preserving the iran nuclear deal and solving the most acute issues surrounding it has been achieved we must create protections for from the negative effects of us sanctions which are continuing to prove harmful. all these challenges to the
2:26 pm
integrity of the nuclear deal stem from america's destructive policies which have isolated it from the global community. iran and the e.u. countries agreed on the implementation of special mechanisms allowing iran to trade crude oil with europe now while iran will reserve the right to increase its image if other parties do violate the 2015 deal the united states unlike the e.u. continues to impose sanctions on tehran our europe correspondent peter all of has been following developments for us in austria. tehran had described this meeting in austria as the last chance to save the 2015 nuclear deal it certainly doesn't seem like that has happened as this meeting is wrapped up but what we have seen is that they are willing all of the sides are willing to continue talks to try and salvage what is left of the deal it's really been a rocky ground since the u.s. pulled out unilaterally in 2018. as the meeting ended the iranian side described it
2:27 pm
as a step forward but certainly not the finished deal just yet iran has threatened to exceed the enrich uranium levels that would set down in the 2015 agreement it's understood that they could do that as early as saturday sunday but we are led to believe that they won't do that immediately that it would be something that would happen at a later date should they pursue with that threat the people who have been here in vienna to try and hammer out some kind of solution include representatives from the united kingdom france germany china and russia all of the remaining signatory since the u.s. decided that they didn't want to be part of it and donald trump moved them away from it one of the things that has given a glimmer of hope to saving the iran deal has been the proposal by the european union sides france germany of the united kingdom they put forward a mechanism called instincts which is essentially that to isolate european
2:28 pm
companies and the reining in companies from u.s. sanctions as they do business with iran the e.u. side has promised a large influx of cash into in sticks to try and make it do the job it was designed to do 6 months since this mechanism was created it still is an up and working in the iranians are far from happy about that because they of course are suffering financially at the hands of u.s. economic sanctions this meeting has happened here in vienna while world leaders are meeting at the g 20 in a sock and we have. from seeing a few figures in japan who said they were really still maintaining that a diplomatic solution was the only way to solve the current impasse the paradox is that we see an international community or some of them that is becoming more tender with the one who already has nuclear weapons and who is threatening and harder with iran whose activity has already been controlled since 2015 where is the coherence
2:29 pm
the strategy of maximum pressure can be the right one because one of the consequences is that we are all talking about how serious the situation and that there is a danger of war this is the time for diplomacy we have to ensure that these tensions are reduced because otherwise an event without it being clear who caused it could lead to spiral of violence that and in a war but in recent weeks in the gulf area we've seen attacks on oil tank is that the united states firmly blamed tehran that being behind we've also seen a u.s. drone shot down by the iranian military now what we've heard from the u.s. side that while they've been speaking in here is they've said that they want to put together a new coalition of the willing and the united states is calling on its allies to join forces with them as they try to get iran to bend to washington's will iran's hostile actions are an international problem that affects many nations let me be
2:30 pm
clear the united states does not seek war with iran. in focus conversations with allies i discussed the need to internationalize this issue by encouraging nato allies and regional partners to voice their opposition to iran's bad behavior and to help us deter further provocative acts so this highly anticipated summit here in vienna has ended without any concrete solutions it was described as i said is the the last chance to save the iran deal it hasn't really done that but what we have seen is these talks resulting in perhaps a little bit more life support for the deal. has come up to half past 9 here in moscow watching the hawks is coming up next we're back at the top of the hour for all the latest developments at the g. 20 and other world headlines.
