but you. look at them funny it's diplomacy and it's. just it's just the sort of mills that. you would do in your. readings and salutation in early august in the white house held what was dubbed a social media summit for us president donald trump it's reported that the event was attended by roughly $200.00 different conservatives and republican activists in order to discuss allegations that both twitter and facebook have been censoring right wing messaging on their social media platforms on the other side of the political aisle democratic candidate tulsi gabbert filed a $50000000.00 lawsuit against google claiming that the tech giant infringed on her

free speech rights when it briefly suspended her campaign's advertising account up to the 1st democratic debate in june and of course we cannot forget the democratic party's cries of larceny and regulation following in the u.s. intelligence communities allegations that russia could use social media means to influence the 2016 presidential election so you know it appears that the 2 biggest political parties in the united states have decided that the social media giants of silicon valley are playing far far far too big of a role in influencing politics but my friends is that really the case and speaking of politics social media and mending change this week n.f.l. quarterback collin capper nick recognized the 3rd anniversary of his now historic act of protest by taking a need to bring the playing of a national anthem during the n.f.l. games capper nick tweeted today marks the 33 year anniversary of the 1st time i protested systemic oppression i continue to work and stand with the people. our

own perception and perspective. and joining me today to bring their perception of perspective along with my own is the founder of truth in media journal of fans community activists in washington d.c. advisory neighborhood commissioner one perry red and r t america producer brant board thank all 3 of you for coming on i want to start with the accusations being leveled at the major social media companies of political bias by the republicans they held this summit i want to ask you do you feel and i'll start with you bret do you feel that there is a conservative there is a bias against conservative viewpoints social media and websites by those who run these social media sites look i mean if you're going to say that the folks valley are probably not lefties that that's probably a stretch because they are however. a lot of these people who are being banned from
2:34 pm
social media on the conservative side or the likes of laura loom or who just throw out racist and just flat out wrong conspiracy laden things and so that's why they're getting banned so i don't necessarily think there's a specific bias against the right wing people on social media i think that there are a lot more open outspoken people who are saying things that are socially acceptable anymore say anymore unfortunately socially acceptable and so that's why they're seeing them being blocked but i think if you see people on the left kind of a spouse saying violence or or just hatred in a way against somebody is race religion or anything else they're probably also going to face the same backlash but i want to want to throw over there do you do you do you feel that there's a gee are we seeing a censorship through google and other such sites against you know conservatives conservative activists things like the. yeah i definitely think there is but here
2:35 pm
is what i think is the misnomer i think a lot of conservatives think they're the only ones this is happening to and that's where they're wrong it's anyone who's anti establishment on the left or on the right but it's much sneakier than an outright ban so brant is right when he says you know that the people who are being outright banned are the ones who have to be easy targets the alex jones the lower limb are those are people are easy to ban because they don't really have a sympathetic ear out there but it's not the banning that is the problem it is the shadow banning it is the algorithms that steer people away from content it is the attempts that have been they even like with someone like it's also gathered by who you mentioned in your lead up here who google has suddenly has a problem where they can run her ads where twitter it just came out was posting articles about her that were 8 months old that were negative that was the number one thing on her twitter search when everyone else every other candidate for president on the democratic side is getting up to the minute whatever the news articles are so there are algorithms in place that make no mistake are
2:36 pm
intentionally taking attention away from non mainstream sources on both the left and the right green party libertarians those are the people who are being severely impacted by this and what do they have in common they are anti-establishment anti-war and they're against the way that things are currently set up right now perry you know you're you're in that you know as a there's been a candidate in your view been an activist i mean ju-ju feel that kind of censorship on social media the is describing for those people who are you know not your mainstream candidates not your main with the mainstream political message from our experience activists have have made this cry for years far as conservatives crying that you know they're the ones it's one intellectual term that outing used to describe conservatives. whan they always plan to eat. it is like they are the only ones now watch this our organization suffer
2:37 pm
from the i.r.s. over scrutinizing when the tea party the southern california tea party they complained about being being scrutinized for 9 months by the i.r.s. and they soon well we joined that lawsuit and we won we received a settlement from the lawsuit from the i.r.s. we were scrutinized for years a crowd about 9 months we were scrutinized for 4 years put in a dorm oil hold status so conservative they elevate things into reminds me of white privilege in this country because when his wife closes a prom there's everyone else and that's how conservatives are conducting their their campaign then what point out the algorithms man if that's not to true you can have you can have your your your your your your your issue whatever the case may be in google will drop it down to page 8 so you know and it's problematic facebook for
2:38 pm
example the friend used to have you don't have any more where to go facebook you know it's interesting i can i just i mean of course that too i think it's important you have to separate a untrue paradigm right media wants you to believe that we live in a left right world there are people only on the right 4 and only on the left and everyone in america and everyone around the world is divided into those camps and that's not true people really across the board are crossing over into many different camps and so what perry said about activists the number one group that is being targeted by these algorithms are activists right left wherever you want to fall in the paradigm if you're a person who wants to take action google wants to hype well and i was going to say i'm sorry to type on that point i think if you look at it from a business perspective i'm not here to defend facebook google wherever they may be but if you're looking at it on a business perspective they also don't want to be seen on the outside so these companies themselves. maybe it's not a political move on their part to say oh we want to make sure it's the left right
2:39 pm
paradigm but more so they're saying we don't want facebook we don't want google to be seen as this outsider group this outsider website this web site for activists this web site for green party or this web site for whatever because then they go well we're not for everybody now because this country is so far into that left right paradigm you know and that's the sad case because i think that a lot of the great activism on the my father would have been able to really become governor if it wasn't for his use of social media when he was one of the 1st to do it and you know i think that's one of the sad things is that you're going to lose out on getting really solid strong grassroots candidates coming up who can use social because that is the benefit we talk a lot about the ills of social media but also the benefit is it does get voices out into the public gets them followers gets them are and speaking of being heard i want to move to the 3rd anniversary column capitals protest i want you to take a look at this small clip of this 3 minute video that he released today on his twitter take a look. the stand wasn't for me this is because i'm seeing things happening to
2:40 pm
people that don't have a voice when it so that. it's a need for much more of those who are michael knelt instead of standing there in the national anthem at last is expect. just what he says are socially just african-americans i mean. his platform to be so many people he took me for and people see a small piece of the 3 minute video that he put out you know and it featured a lot of the parents and the supporters of a lot of the young black men and women who've been killed over the years by police violence and things about nature i want to ask you all start with you perry is has has that systemic oppression that copper next been fighting why he took that need have we seen any change or effect from not only his protests but when you look at the entirety of the black lives matter and that have we seen enough of a change as the needle moved a little bit oh absolutely not but what we have seen is an elevation of those issues and their own. on the on the tip of tons of americans all over the country
2:41 pm
whether appalachia or whether on wall street and so from the occupy movement to calling captaining this this resistance to a systemic injustice and inequality was necessary i know i'm thankful and i have a grandson who's about to enter one a football in c.w.a. one a football and and. calling captain nick being the sacrificial lamb was so very important and i hate where we are today he is on the n.f.l. and he said latest move that's interesting to. broadband i ask you you know we've recently seen the n.f.l. now kind of cozying up with jay z. and that kind of a deal a hey look we've moved even jay z. said oh look we've moved on and said we're going from taken to mean now and move forward do you guys feel that's that's accurate i mean it was. the 1st billionaire in hip hop music correct or i mean i'm not saying that he isn't it he doesn't speak for the people or anything but a bunch of billionaires accepting another billionaire i don't know if that really
2:42 pm
means that they're ready to change and look calm capper nick made a huge statement with what he did and he paid the price for the loss i mean you know if you lost his career he's obviously been able to go out there and make change but he's not playing football anymore and i think that's something that he should wear more as a badge of honor to then coming out there and saying oh you know what they don't want me to play because of this he should take that as a hey you know what i'm not playing in the league because i stood up for what i stand for and how many of you guys can say that on that note i got to say i don't regret been. told they agree with that you know but there are a lot of activists out there who have sacrificed a lot more than some like government can still makes millions to nike who have sacrificed a lot and they are really unsung heroes of this absolutely could point to all right ben swan i want to thank you so much for coming on perry road always a pleasure broadsword thank you all 3 of you for bringing your ideas and thoughts to this program always a pleasure all right as we go to break off watchers don't forget to let us know what you think of the topics we've covered on the social media be sure to check out

watching the hawks the podcast now they'll be on spotify apple juice and everywhere you listen the podcast coming up my fantastic co-host tabitha wallows opens up a gallery of big media has been scanned and they weight watchers. for kids don't want to miss this they have to watch it. so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy. let it be an arms race. dramatic development only really exists i don't see how that strategy will be ready. to sit down and talk.

most people think just stand out in this business you need to be the 1st one on top of the story or the person with the loudest voice so the biggest. truth to stand the news business is just the right questions and demand the right answer. questions. cast calendar is dark alfonzo a long day has died this change can take change dard survey or. his 1st words were added i was here a challenging post you got 2 years to live. i have no doubt that what happened was criminal. defense concentrate market is a $1000000000.00 industry these companies have

therapy sessions than experts and journalists conferring on news reporting and you think think this is a new phenomenon in the world of trump you'd be very very wrong you can't even blame it on obama way back in 2010 and a piece for p.b.s. media shift scott rosenberg wrote journalists typically and rightly see themselves as bearers of public accountability holding the feet of government officials business leaders and other public figures to the fire of their inquiries yet remarkably a surprisingly small surprising number of journalists still find it hard to accept being held to account themselves this week proved that after almost a decade these words were written the problem has only gotten worse the new york times deputy washington editor jonathan weisman was demoted this week after he was criticized for his reaction to criticism of his tweet calling justice democrats for as he put it seeking to unseat an african-american democrat the opponent in
2:47 pm
question is also african-american which of course led many online to discuss the issue and express their opinion on it one of those people was new york times best selling author roxanne gay who received numerous e-mails from jonathan weisman one which stated i believe you owe me an enormous apology and if you would hear me out i think you would agree also this week c.n.n. anchor and definitely not a godfather character chris cuomo was caught on film threatening to throw a man down a set of stairs because he jokingly called him fredo after the godfather character this is an aberration that was one can see tweets over the years from cuomo to random practically anonymous twitter users like this one in which he wrote maybe you were hit with a rock that made you confuse facts. has the e-mail journalists replace the walter cronkite's of the world who held back 30 years in rage in order to be a sense of strength for readers and viewers in other news weight watchers now known as w w released crowborough

a weight loss app for children that's right now your young son or daughter can get a jump start on their body dysmorphic disorder for as low as $12.00 a week are we over protecting the adults while forcing kids to grow up too fast well let's find out and step into the gallery. right. right. right. joining me this week in the gallery are artsy america correspondent rachel blevins and host of boom bust christie i thank you so much for joining me today joining me to you so i guess the 1st new york times editor jonathan weisman he sort of initially got trouble because of the doubling down it wasn't even that he just posted something silly which he does a lot of just that takes in general. he gets attention for it he sort of doubles down it is theory that he was doubling down on with saying this opponent being
2:49 pm
african-american was a problem is that he said that p.p. was essentially saying people of color don't represent people in cities. like cities in the midwest or in the south and all of this. ok it's not racist but is it not kind of racist adjacent to sit there and say these things to bring up this and is a bully completely like i feel like he even if us thinking that that should have been shouldn't have been something that he should just put on twitter i think trump actually led by example and everson trump started putting all of his policies on twitter every single other person thought that oh it's appropriate to put our personal thoughts and opinions when they actually should be accountable to a higher standard the president of the united states should not be on twitter putting out official policies doing tears and all those things those should be done through like their p.r. team like p.r. exists for a reason because they know how to handle messaging twitter doesn't really do that doesn't allow for that so i think like ever since then everybody thought hey we can express whatever we want we're when in this case people should be can help to kyra
2:50 pm
standard people should be accountable for what they say and i think especially in the world of journalism you look at it from the standard you are wanting the public to trust you're wanting them to think that what you're reporting is accurate and it's factual but if you're coming on there and you're giving not only your opinion but you're actually pointing them in a way that is harmful to other people or in this case he's pointing them towards one candidate in a way from another that really stands out and that's something that we've got to watch out in addition to the fact that it's on twitter i mean i remember when i was in college my professor specifically said watch where you put on social media because your future employers are looking at that they're not just looking at your resume they're going i'm looking at your twitter account but now we're in an age where someone who is an editor at the new york times he may think that he's above that but in this sense it will be interesting to see exactly what. happens to him because that is sending a very dangerous message and he's these 2 people who are very i mean even in the video with chris cuomo he sits there and says like on c.n.n.
2:51 pm
anchor. i find it a bit amusing i have to say that i keep hearing about you know c.n.n. anchors or fox news anchors or are these people that are getting accosted in restaurants and being told how horrible they are and i don't know i've worked for 2 years i only have people go on to me and say thank you when i saw that it was really part of it it's like maybe your message is really not that people don't trust people and have that because they do i don't have people coming up to me in restaurants or any of it's it's when people do say something to me it's like hey love your show hey watch your network you think part of it is like maybe people don't like you and your message very much and i think it also has to do one was ego for a big portion of it because it's like if someone calls you for it you might not like it but that doesn't mean you have to have an outburst about it but generally on the flip side of that even if you do have an outburst of over it like you're human you made a mistake and i feel like the entire thing is actually blown entirely out of a portion like people get angry he is human he was with his family and everything
2:52 pm
so it was an inappropriate time for someone to try to get him riled up so i think there's 2 sides of the story and i think the media just shows him as like a fool and he he should she should not have done something like this when in reality he's like a pot if he made a mistake he should have said that it should be true neutralized not that big of a deal i think it's crazy how quickly it was trending on twitter i mean i saw the video and just kind of scrolled past and thought oh that's interesting not really something i would share but then all of a sudden is the number one trending topic on twitter and there were a lot of people questioning the validity of and wondering ok wait a 2nd why is this getting pushed to the forefront when reality is something some people might watch but it's not exactly something that the entire world is going to be talking about more so than anything else on twitter and i think that's the thing it's the personality is. that are your big. egos it's because their brand the anderson cooper's the tucker carlson's their brand and that becomes you have to do that i want to take now to move on to curb though i'm going
2:53 pm
to sound a life full curb low as in curb your way cravings for children ok so one of the things unknown is according to data from the national eating disorders association it says the best known environmental contributor to the development of eating disorders is the socio cultural ideation idealization of cygnus and also 79 percent of weight loss program participants reported coping with weight stigma by eating more food and here we are with weight watchers sorry w.w. rebranded it. with their app which looks like every other eating program it looks like deal a meal it's like here's there's green foods and yellow foods and red foods and log everything and become obsessed and take away yourself and take pictures. you know i like a lot of people have had issues with eating disorders all of that stuff that stuff starts at a pretty impressionable age and when i was looking through the web page of curb
2:54 pm
though i found one that was an 8 year old girl celebrating that she had dropped her b.m.i. her body mass index by 11 points and she had so much more energy she's a right how am i just being too sensitive and my being grazie i don't have kids i don't is this weird it is weird i think the focus is wrong the focus should be on the idea of the ideal of the having the perfect body like everybody is obsessed with that social media kind of trends that like you have all these filters you have apps to make people thinner than they actually are real life and people look at these images on instagram kids are very impressionable and they look at and they're like i should be like that like i feel like that is the actual problem the weight watchers app program i feel like they're targeting the targeting in the messaging wrong like kids should not be trying to lose weight they should be encouraged to have a healthy diet because on the flip side is that america does have an obesity problem like. that is a fact like america's number one in terms of obesity and obesity can be countered from a very young age so kids should be taught to have
2:55 pm
a healthy diet one that doesn't lead to any other eating disorders said i agree with that completely and i also think if you're looking at an 8 year old if they are truly over way a lot of that is on the parents i mean what you know as a parent giving them it's not like the 8 year old is just walking to the store and deciding exactly what they're getting it's on the parents to really look at their diet and what it's including and they also have to realize that kids pay attention to a lot of what parents say so if you have a parent coming and going oh you need to lose weight you need to do this that's going to give them a terrible body image that's going to last for the rest of their lives whereas if the parent looks at the numbers and then comes in and says hey let's add some more fruits and vegetables my daughter that kind of thing and makes it a positive thing then they're going to help the child go for a company to now come out and say oh we need this app to teach your kids how to lose weight and then they're you know pushing 8 year olds with that does send a very dangerous message and that could end up sending a lot of customers away from weight watchers or w.w. because they don't want to be
2:56 pm
a part of that and they don't want to contribute their money to the i want to say this are absolute we have about a minute left and i want to say our absolute curva just a sign of the times where actual proper health care from a doctor is not available because in a world with health care if your child is having obesity problems or anything you go to your doctor and they would say hey you know what you need more this more let's focus on these sayings fruits vegetables that kind of stuff nutrition is that is that a sign of the times that people can't even we have to do everything through an app because we don't we can't afford to go to a doctor pretty much like the app is just simply a tool and going oh my you just said like it's the responsibility should fall on to the parent the responsibility should be fallen to the doctor to actually like maintain a health the app is mainly a 20 can't really blame an app for problems that i'm i create or not create absolutely and i can see how they may think oh maybe if we make it out for it will make it fun for kids and that kind of thing. and they can look at their green foods and different things that they're eating but i think overall that's especially something they've got to look at the relationship portion of it and how that plays
2:57 pm
into it especially for young children yeah there's a lot happened there thank you so much that we got there a lot will we'll see you guys all back here next week thank you so much artie correspondent rachel blevins and host of the best chrissy i thank you so much for joining me here in the gallery best week and that that everyone is our show for you today remember i want to ask my co-host always says in this world we're not told for left out so i tell you while i love you i'm topical all this keep on watching the hawks and have a great day and night everyone. we came here where did you work before you came here when you lived. in many us states

capital punishment is still practiced convicted prisoners can spend years waiting for execution and most of the time the victims' families they are very much in favor the death penalty there are some people because of what they did they have given up the right to live among us somebody even proven innocent of 3 years on death row and how many more exonerations is it going to take before we as a society realize that this is not working and we actually do something about. it so it's seemed wrong. roles just don't call. me a little bit yet to say proud disdain to come to advocate and indeed from an equal betrayal. when so many find themselves worlds apart. she
