political blunder of epic and dangerous proportions may once again be on the horizon and it's called. no it's not a brand new weather manipulation station in alaska. actually stands for health advanced research projects agency and according to the washington post it's the one solution to the mass shooting up a demick that allegedly trump has reacted very positively to. made into reality would be a brand new agency modeled after darpa except rather than create the robots from drone swarms harpo's main focus would be to reportedly collecting volunteer data from a suite of smart devices including apple watches amazon echo and google homes in order to identify nero behavioral signs of someone he did toward a violent explosive. only collecting volunteer data you say just like how they said the n.s.a. would never collect information on u.s. citizens or how enhanced interrogation is not torture and how the concentration of

immigrants being held against their will long our southern border are not living in concentration camps and speaking of the immigrant internment camps doctors are now raising questions about the medical treatment of immigrants being held there and conditions there directly violate a physician's 03 to make the patients well being their top priority from harper the immigration detention centers and a whole lot more prepare yourself for another edition of watching the hawks. if. you. like you know that i got.
8:32 am
one on the watch in the hawks i am tyrrel of and for and today like every thursday we once again put dialogue over debate at the top of the wallace myself bring you 2 distinct and informative discussions future in a variety of topics and guests with unique political viewpoints starting with our very own perception and perspective. want to say to bring their perceptions investigative journalist ben swan immigration attorney alan or jr and former cia officer john kiriakou thank you all 3 for coming in today i want to start with harper woods an agency that would be dedicated to amassing our mental health data and then using ai to sift through the data in order to predict which one of us might be dangerously violent in a show of hands here at the table who here totally trust the u.s. government and their ability to conduct this agency responsibly if it was created this is absolutely ridiculous right at the end of the day ben i'll go with you 1st
8:33 am
i mean what do you make of this. well look i think it goes far beyond just even the idea of do you trust them to handle it correctly the very creation of this new agency cannot be trusted because there's nothing that works about this in terms of constitutionality there's no due process involved in this it is literally an agency that would be set up and designed in a way to say we're going to figure out who is a threat to our society before they do anything threatening which goes against everything inside of the constitution and then on top of that we want to use the amazon echo the google home the apple watch to listen in on what you're doing to gather data on you and then to determine if you are in fact a threat to yourself or a threat to the greater population it is like 984 on steroids it's everything that every kind of warning that we've ever had about whether dystopian governments look like this still be an age would look like being played out right in front of us everything we knew we didn't like about apple watches and amazon and goes in google
8:34 am
homes is all coming to fruition under the guise of the same shit. you have a background in law immigration attorney would like to buy the writers there's something really going on with the process it's not science so don't hide behind that sort of concept that this is a scientific method that the following but in addition to that you're treating the symptoms not the causes so if you really want to impact society you would address the issues that make these people go that way not addressing the people out there already impacted so really not addressing the issue at all sort of disc a go to get in saying we're going to try to do a different way and the problem with this is the programmers will have the discretion to decide to determine who the people are and that's what really takes it out the scientific method and all the sort of make it focus once again on people of color poor individuals and low impact societies you know john there's a volunteer but there's somebody who's been on the side of the whistle blow over you know torture and things of that nature i mean is this something that you feel might start volunteer and kind of have down the path well if the data is there and it reminds me of that question well if you have nothing to hide then why aren't you
8:35 am
with the program that was a question uttered. 1st in a public place by gerbils and so yeah both alan and ben are exactly correct this is this is the very definition of big brother it's the very definition of unconstitutionality. if we're going to look at the problem of for example mass shootings and the look at societal problems not look at how to take away the constitutional rights of people who have not put in parentheses yet done anything wrong yeah and you know plus that idea of mental health issues in this country are already a big issue and a lot of people are scared you know it's adding another layer of fear for people to come forward and seek help with mental health issues if the grip of if they're worried about suddenly being put on the government list and that's the next thing i want to ask because it isn't just the republican way of kind of avoiding the conversation on gun control or finding it an easy out democratic governor in new
8:36 am
york andrew cuomo as proposed surveilling people with mental health says he wants to see the creation of a federal mental health database. that would restrict access to guns for those on i mean should the u.s. government be making lists and serving citizens just based on mental health issues and who decides that at the end of the day i'll ask you 1st but. well no they absolutely should not look there is a judge who just ruled today about this situation with a watch list essentially for muslim americans there's 4600 americans on this government watch list and it was ruled unconstitutional because of the fact that no one knows how they get on the list in the 1st place nor do they know what the criteria are to get off this list they haven't committed a crime there's no indication they were in the process of committing a crime where they would ever commit a crime that's what the judge said what he looked at it he said this was unconstitutional but it's actually being created here tyro is a national it's not a watch list it's every single person in the nation automatically goes on to the list you're all on the list everyone's going to be surveilled to listen to and
8:37 am
again it's this idea that you need to be stopped before you can commit a crime. and by the way let's be very clear about this. it's coming under president trump because trump falls for a lot of stuff right. for whatever reason but this is not a trump idea these are ideas that are being brought to him by other groups that are saying hey here's a way to deal with this issue of mass shootings they've been pushing for this for over 2 years now to create harpa and to begin using this technology in this way so that i think what right now it goes back to what you said at the beginning it is taking advantage of the moment to say let's institute even more surveillance and more control over society and again place everyone in the nation on the list or watch them all busy all the time i want to get to this next topic as well and in an article for the journal of american medical association dr paul spiegel director of center for humanitarian health at johns hopkins he posed a really interesting question and he asked given the reports of in human overcrowded unsanitary conditions including insufficient water and toilets lack of
8:38 am
clean clothing and bedding high exposure to psychological stress and poor medical care and many of the d h s processing in detention facilities how can and should needed medical care for detainees be structured especially given the dual dual loyalty challenges that emerge of physicians are employed by say d h s in charge of the taining immigrants and migrants but they also want to act in the best care of their patients in other words how can a patient come 1st when you're working for you know an organization or an agency that might not want patient care 1st alan i'll ask you as an immigration attorney so i think the 1st question sort of brings these 2 stories together why would you sort of watch people when it's more cost efficient to help people so instead of saying you know i'm going to watch you with this money how about i give you some health care to sort of help you correct whatever differences you may have people have mental illnesses are not diseased or disaffected individuals are still citizens of this culture and they shouldn't be treated as we start going down the slave like immigrants or something of that fashion so it's very confusing how a watchdog agency that allows individuals that are detained at at these facilities
8:39 am
to not have appropriate health care not have basic soap and water for women and children who. we're going through different parts of their lives so these are not people who are actually even doing anything criminal or going to be able to watch a larger wall of our society so exactly the problem that we sort of talk about as a professional there's a conflict issue and in these restraints of a government agency sort of stepping into your professional license and saying you can't can i do these things is constitutionally problematic and professionally problematic john as a whistle blower who blew the whistle you know when you're talking about doctors now trying to help these people in these detention centers and these you know where they're putting music to immigrants you know i magine that's got to be a hard thing to do when faced with you know you put your job 1st or to put these people's care 1st or the law 1st absolutely right there are going to be dual loyalties even if there shouldn't be you know another thing to these of the mental health type is that here in the united states there are more mentally ill people being treated in american prisons than there are in mental hospitals and shame on
8:40 am
us as a country for that being the fact we should be spending money on mental health mental health care reopening mental hospitals or financing and funding mental health wings of existing hospitals rather than just putting mentally ill people in prison which is what we do now now in terms of the border you're absolutely right but what's the what's the the answer the answer really is at least now is that we have to rely on physicians to just do the right thing i'm not sure that we can or they're going to rat out immigrants who have some sort of problem maybe in an effort to have them cast out of the country again this is something that that we have to struggle with in the absence of of a law or even a clear policy that's very true but you've got about one minute left what is your take on this you know with this issue of medical doctors you know being able you
8:41 am
know being kind of torn in both directions when it comes to these potential suitors . sure and i think that these guys are going to great point that ultimately the doctors will have dual loyalty but at the at the end of the day they're having to deal with people and so you're in this terrible situation that's been created bout from about 20 to 30 years worth of us policy in latin america and south america a lot of these folks have been pushed here as a result of that and the problem is that everyone who's looking at this issue right now from the outside is looking at it as a political issue instead of a people issue unfortunately the doctors who are there are being asked to do the same thing to look at as a political issue and not a people issue but the the real goal that they should have and i believe many of them do have is to care for people but as john said the policies don't allow that to happen right now it's the policies that have to change immediately and that is what we should be focusing on is stopping policies like harpo and actually looking at policies that save these people the border and also keep us less surveilled and not put mental people mental health issues on lists i want to thank everyone for

a new study published in the journal of the american medical association found that consuming 2 or more artificially sweetened soft drinks per day those people were more likely than those who drank sugar sweetened soft drinks to die from circulatory diseases such as heart attack high blood pressure stroke and hypertension the study followed over 450000 people in 10 european countries for almost 2 decades and they also found that sugar sweetened soft drinks were more likely to cause liver appendix and intestinal diseases. dietician at the ohio state university wexner medical center to a guy who news that for years people have been drinking artificially sweetened drinks thinking they are going to have any consequences we're garbus of whether using artificial sweeteners or real sugar it appears that there are negative health consequences with either one the same also seems to be holding true for the latest health craze plant based burgers which are finding their way to every boards of just about every fast food chain from del taco to white castle but are they
8:46 am
a healthier alternative to traditional couse or these while the facts say they really aren't upon comparison the impossible burger has more sodium and added sugar than a regular whopper without much more nutritional value to make up for it however according to your own monitor the market for meat substitutes is expected to hit $2500000000.00 by 2023 and our desire for healthier alternatives to meet milk and sugar seem to know no bounds even smokers are beginning to see the consequences associated with the healthier version of their favorite vice this week yet another person is die in the united states due to long issues related to smoking with pens or even cigarettes the mystery condition that has put hundreds in the hospital this summer presents like pneumonia with doctors struggling to pinpoint the exact cause or how to prevent it so in or is evil to capitalize on the business of health have we agreed to swallow a lot more than we can true. watcher's let's take a moment to hypothesise on the hypocrisy of healthier alternatives and step into
8:47 am
the gallery. joining me today in the gallery is the co-host of r t americas the bus christie and from new york joining me is r t america correspondent trinity chavez thank you for joining me ladies so how are you it's good so you know here's this idea of aspartame which i grew up knowing aspartame was bad we used to have warning labels on cans of diet soda when i was a kid that said this has caused tumors and lab rats so it seemed obvious to me you know it's like don't drink that it's bad for you let me ask you 1st trinity what is it about sugar that has a so desperate that we're even addicted to the alternative like fake sugars. well i think sugar in general everyone you know just loves boost of energy that you initially get from some sort of sugar source including like fruit but
8:48 am
a lot of people a lot of merchant a lot of companies lately have been sort of targeting these these different sugar alternatives and many people have been leaning to consuming those products because of the 0 calories that they market especially with soda a lot of people think that diet soda is a more healthier alternative when actually that's not the fact because when you're taking something out you're substituting it for some other chemical and it which is why even here in new york there's been a massive effort especially this year to sort of limit the sugar intake by 16 ounces when it comes to sugary beverages it's called the soda ban even launching a p.s.a. earlier this year saying that saying that soda is actually worse than smoking because at least with smoking you know they advertise it's a warning by the surgeon general and with with sodas specifically they're marketed
8:49 am
to children they're being sold in cafeterias they're being you know sold on the $711.00 on the corner or convenience stores all around the city and so a lot a lot of kids these days they're not checking the ingredient labels they're not checking to see ok well let me research this let me see what sort of health effects are so stupid with this product in fact they're saying that soda is instead linked to various types of cancer diabetes tooth loss and that is not that is not addressed on on the labels of these sugary beverages so i mean i think a lot of people are initially trying to mark. sort of cut out some of what you're doing just sort of like cut back that seems to be like trying to cut back it gets worse yeah exactly and so a lot of the healthier alternatives today they're not actually a healthier alternatives there's a lower calorie this lower calorie but instead you're probably consuming more
8:50 am
chemicals into your body as opposed to if you were just to sort of go the natural route living ask you christie about you know what's what's your thought on that and what is the business side of this it's a huge business we're talking about you know 1000000002 point some odd 1000000000 dollar industries that are getting bigger and bigger absolutely and if you think about it sugar and sugar substitute what it does it triggers a release of dopamine in your brain and so that is essentially the reward center and it makes you crave more it's the what makes you feel good and makes you want to continue to consume this sugar and substitutes but what it does is it actually alters the chemical composition of your brain so that over time you need more of that sugar to hit that same high had that same like feel good place so what i describe what does that sound like it sounds like any other drug that literally sounds like the cycle of any other drug addict drug you name it so sugar should actually be cause a fight as that because it does alter the chemical composition for your brain in that way and right now you have children consuming that from such
8:51 am
a young age so they're building up this very bad habit that will carry them through their entire life so this study while it's like very it's very thorough i think the focus is wrong the focus shouldn't just be on soft carbonated drinks it should actually be on the effects of sugar and the rest of the diet that it entails which leads you to the other thing that goes along with a diet soda is a cheeseburger or any kind of fast food so the meat alternative thing i mean i love i love the meat alternatives i love not having you know i love a cheeseburger but i also i'm like oh that's great to not have that red meat and not eat but i'm aware of what i'm eating and i don't think a lot of people are so when you look at the impossible whopper so it has 600. calories 11 grams of fat a whopping $1000.00 medium milligrams of sodium which is crazy high and 12 grams of added sugar so once you put it all together compare that with a regular whopper $660.00 calories 40 grams of fat $980.00 milligrams of sodium and
8:52 am
11 grams of sugar there is not a huge difference and as you look from from fast food joint to fast food joint there's a dunkin donuts sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich that also is using this beyond sausage 470 calories 24 grams of fat 90910 grams of sodium added sugar again when you look at the regular old sausage aside from a little bit less fat you've got incredibly high amounts of sodium and added sugar . i wonder you know for most people is the meat is the meat alternative thing is this really about virtue or single egg and letting everybody know like oh i'm having a burger but it's healthy is it less about knowing like people have to know us you 1st christi you have to know that like a cheeseburger is not going to be good for you know exactly and i think that we can compare all the numbers in the nutritional fact and i think there is something there but i also think that if you just look at red meat red meat has been shown
8:53 am
that it can be linked to cancer and can be linked to cardiovascular disease and because of the effects of harmonization on the meats etc that we know for sure so by substituting red meat for the dow the process boy that is slightly healthier despite the fact that there is like the fact bone in the high sodium levels so i do think it is slightly better i think we can call it a less bad alternative you are picking the lesser evil so there is a slight benefit there if you compare that way what do you think trinity i mean are we are we in this point where do you think people are really looking at it from how folks are native or is it more about looking like you're healthy and maybe just being able to have that guilty saying but feel slightly better about it. well i definitely think that that's a trend these days a lot of people are it's kind of a popular thing to do so to speak by eating these plant based items and a lot of restaurants here in new york especially are having the good alternatives and beyond meat. sort of meat protein well beyond me proteins and they're made with things like soy beans black beans and
8:54 am
a lot of people don't really know the nutritional facts when they're consuming these things but they look on instagram and social media has played a huge part in this with people leaning toward eating more high healthier alternatives because it's post where the it's click bait people this is what people are doing and so a lot of people are just following the trend and they're not really looking at the nutrient facts they're not really really. really understanding what they're putting in their body and i've done many stories on this topic and i've interviewed a lot of nutritionists dieticians and doctors and they say that ultimately you know having a fully plant based diet yes while it is good in some aspects too much of anything is not good for you and as this becomes more and more popular we are seeing more and more companies sort of lean toward this way of a plant based future but we also have to pay attention to what sort of chemicals are being put in these plant based burgers or other items i mean we have to you
8:55 am
know get the meat texture right if you're going to be imitating the meat patty or the chicken texture and so is there or die is being put in there is there are other chemicals and so a lot of people don't really understand or research through the nutrients that are being put in these products or the chemicals and i think that that's a big big thing that we should be looking out for well before we completely run out of time i think what sort of wrap this all up you've got your you know your soda your burger and then you have a cigarette and that kind of come up which i think you know like i'm old school i did that. i will try anything when it comes to food but in that area it seems weird when someone's like oh there's probably call and there's all these chemicals and you get a big hit like this isn't even seem like just cigarettes or just smoking something oh yeah you know we've got to go to christiane you know we don't know a lot about what happens with these things is this whole thing about all these
8:56 am
alternatives really about that will do anything to keep our vices as long as there's like a socially acceptable way to do it ready much like every single step that the company has taken is because like people have said oh cigarettes is bad because they're burning carcinogens and everything so now they're saying that hey let's not burn off carcinogens this have something like this have like a vapor have something in one of these pens and barbro came out with us idea ordinary smoking it's you know it's if it's not one thing it's another we never could get out of on this make you guys so much as from new york and christie i hear from boom bust here in the gallery thank you so much that's our show for you today and remember everyone as tyra banks for always says in this for her not hold her left us i tell you all i love you on top of the well it's keep on watching the house and have a great day and night everyone. i .
