this issue and if we can't even talk about it we can anyone have a conversation about it then. are in trouble. ready money and influence a new report alleges there's a covert multi-billion dollar scheme to boost the popularity of the left across the u.s. . it's all interior minister. faces charges of inciting violence against the german rescue boat captain who would lead the doctor on italian shores with dozens of migrants salvini described the accusations against him as a medal of honor. and the u.s. carries out military exercises in south america next to venezuela in line with his apparent strategy of surrounding the enemy we break down why the tactic isn't anything new.

here. not watchdog alleges there's a covert multi-million dollar strategy to promote liberal values in the u.s. the document on mass a scheme to push certain topics from supporting obamacare to transport a war. takes a closer look at how it operates. what's more powerful in politics than money a strong candidate with a good program and idealist would say nothing a realist would say but a politician would say dark money dark money is the millions of dollars that behind the scenes donors are spending to send the political train down the track and according to the left leaning media it's a bad bad thing because the conservatives do it because brothers have made billions
5:02 pm
and want to ensure their government doesn't limit their ability to make more conservative donor david koch as one half of the koch brothers came to symbolize the influence of dark money in america but you know who's even better than conservatives that slipping the bills into their prodigy's pockets democrats according to this research a group called arabella advisors will see has been in the vanguard of the leftist money holds the shelter under their umbrella for nonprofit organizations by their nature they do not have to disclose who they're getting their money from but this research suggests that they've gathered a huge number of very wealthy donors some of the nation's largest grant making institutions including the rockefeller packard and kellogg foundations the donors to the funds managed by arabella it remains unclear why such large and powerful institutions seek outside philanthropic consulting but presumably
5:03 pm
a significant part of our bill is appeal lies in its ability to obscure large financial transactions these for nonprofits have been showering and to conservative grassroots organizations with their money take this one with a name so noble it's calling our goal is to oppose in the interim short list yes they get their pockets stuffed by 1633rd an offshoot of our bell advisors another group. save my care has been pushing against republican attempts to repeal obamacare the president is sabotaging the system 28. now there is uncertainty in health care. remember this it led to this. we won't forget. well their financial backbone is made up by bills coming from a nother arabella advisers sprout the new venture fund the dark money is not
5:04 pm
a trick exclusively from the democratic playbook yes it's been revealed they do outperform the conservatives when it comes to the amount spent by more than 20 percent in fact but pro republican donors do that too and according to the research media coverage is way out of balance with most outlets reserving a good bashing for the conservatives when you look at the mainstream media which has deservedly declining pop declining viewership both the editorial and the production staff is chiefly and the anchors are chiefly democrats or democrat leaning so of course out of the mainstream media you're going to get that that narrative reality is the independents and the rising anti-corruption anti-crime only part voting populace the united states is against the use of dark funny is against the use of corruptly having foundations the reality is that
5:05 pm
a lot of money comes in from unions from particularly from the public sector unions to their favorite politicians both legally and i think illegally but there has been a rise now of dark money and dark money is bad whether it's right or left leaning i mean the public has a right to know that each individual's vote counts and that it can't be swamped by the activities of partisan. groups that are illegally sourcing in. one of the money so next time you see a nonprofit banner stirring up a fight for of your to another democratic staple remember regardless of what side of the political spectrum would comes from it's not just people but billionaires fortunes behind it to. at least new coalition government is said to prosecutors on to the ousted former interior minister matteo salvini the anti immigration firebrand is accused of conducting a smear campaign and inciting violence against
5:06 pm
a german refugee ship captain correspondent chart do bensky is across the story for us. well salvini is facing this libel case where he's being accused of inciting violence against a cap in this is a captain of a charity rescue ship in the mediterranean karolyn a racket a german citizen now back in july she had rescued 53 migrants in the mediterranean and tried to dock ship this was the sea what 3 on a tally in soil she was told no you can't do that that was one of the the policies that might be any had when he was interior minister of italy and she then continued to try and dock that boat in doing so she actually rammed into a buddha control vessel and she was later arrested for that no salvini at the time accused captain rocket of trying to sink that patrol boat and actually had cues to her of an act of war she was later released then put on the house arrest and later
5:07 pm
court said that she hadn't done anything illegal or though she does still face charges of helping illegal immigration now salvini during that whole incident discussed it on twitter he said things that the captain was a criminal that she was a delinquent that the poor woman had tried to kill 5 italian soldiers and this is why he is now facing this prosecution but salvini says he stands by everything that he said denounced by a german communist drop the good immigrants. it's a model for me i'll never give up. well it is former interior minister former deputy prime minister matel use of the knee is one of the country's most popular politicians riding high in the polls mainly due to his anti immigration stance and the fact that he closed ports to illegal immigrants while he was in that position
5:08 pm
now the current coalition which is the make up of the 5 star movement and the left wing democratic party is said to be a coalition that's kind of come together to form something out of nothing and as a result many people intended hooks at that government itself could collapse in the coming months if not the coming years but certainly many people expecting that before italy's next scheduled election as a result of that the popularity of materials salvini is seen as being thought on inside of the current administration so you can imagine that they're certainly rubbing their hands in glee at any attempts to neutralize material salvini and neutralize the popularity. of washington seems to be improving its relationship with the latin american nation that borders venezuela is launched a so-called humanitarian outreach program led by the air force there that provide some services to locals but also conducts
5:09 pm
a training for military personnel the move is now seen neighboring venezuela encircled by american bases just months after the u.s. backed opposition failed to achieve regime change in caracas our senior correspondent jeff examines washington's tactics. u.s. military has returned to guyana after 20 years on a joint military exercise slash humanitarian mission there's nothing quite like a humanitarian mission led by guys who specialize in boring things like having a drug rehab center run by drug lords but small details the important thing is the guy and that is important on a sits in a strategic location. on the north edge of south america and on the caribbean and the look what a coincidence it borders venezuela i mean what are the chances of that the same venezuela that has u.s. bases all around it here here here here brazil is in thing that it's open to
5:10 pm
hosting a u.s. military base a mile then israel is like the center of a do nothing of u.s. bases same venezuela that the u.s. has threatened repeatedly where it has tried to spark regime change and which it is encircled with guns just in case trump decides to pull the trigger it's a regime that frankly could be toppled very complete by the military or the military. you'd think entirely surrounding nations you don't like might be a bit overkill but it's the pressure the psychological pressure that matters the promises easier when the guys who are negotiating with always have something to fear specifically about their country being burned down if they see the wrong thing and it isn't just venezuela i mean look at iran as no way to check a chewing gum wrapper without hitting a u.s. marine on the nose which come to think of it they could well uses an excuse to
5:11 pm
invade iran a few months ago trump even sent more troops to the region just in case they left an empty spot at which iran could through a chewing gum wrapper and china for the faint of heart one gets the impression that there are more u.s. troops around in china than there are u.s. troops left in the united states but don't have the map fool you for america that isn't enough the us needs to develop alternative operates in the cations the pentagon will continue to develop new concepts build a distributed and resilient force posture and field new capabilities to counter these threats honestly the drug mess of. seems remarkably apt the pentagon recently boosted the has leukemia patients in more than 160 countries have some sort of military presence in 84 percent of the countries on this planet and yet not enough

just need more crave more. 3 former security guards from the private u.s. military contractor blackwater have had their jails and has all but half of their roles in or the most notorious chapters in the iraq war they were convicted 5 years ago over the deadly shooting of civilians in baghdad in 2007 which left more than a dozen iraqis dead the man had hoped to walk free on a technicality but the judge disagreed in the united states we hold our armed forces and our contractors accountable for their actions. dustin heard had his sentence reduced the most to 12 years after prosecutors said he was responsible for only 6 of the deaths while even liberty and paul were found culpable for the majority of those killed their sentences were cut to 14 and 15 years respectively lawyers had appealed to the judge to let the men walk free having already spent 5

years behind bars the original judge and jailed them are men and rules governing the use of machine guns in a violent crime which carries a mandatory 30 year sentence but an appeals court rejected that 2 years ago because the men had used government issued weapons in a war zone in thursday's re sentencing the judge described the former guards as fine young men and praise their characters the massacre of iraqi civilians became one of the most emotionally charged symbols of american abuses in iraq. sorry i don't have a character there are. there were dead bodies everywhere and this is already been done about the only t.v. who thought to be among the dead bodies of my own history with those who are child forces in the world now 7 years old i've.
5:14 pm
got to ask it again as david swanson beneath the sentences handed down to the gauntlet went to lenient. i do think it is outrageous that the 30 year. sentence for having a machine gun is tossed out if you got the machine gun from the us government what's the us government of all the rule of law in another country halfway around the world and i think it's outrageous that another law requiring 10 years for having any kind of gun was tossed out on the basis that this was
5:15 pm
a war wolf what made the war legal think the entire war was blatantly illegal why should it have a gun with the end that illegal war legalized having that gun as part of your crime so i mean these are technicalities but they tell a larger story about what we sanction as a as a culture bringing bike. it's

a very dangerous illusion to stick with a mistake. by terrible simple compared simple to do with climate change as compared to making vast had to triple tariffs and there's a danger to lives and to think that we've got a plan to be there for those people we've got to do the films here. welcome back to the program at russia's embassy in the united states after

a russian executive was detained in italy at washington's request has been charged with suspected industrial espionage against an american aviation company alexander caution alpha is a director at a key russian engine manufacturer has claimed he conspired to steal trade secrets with an italian director. both men were arrested in naples in southern italy let's take a look at what exactly the men are accused of conspiring and trying to steal intellectual property belonging to g.e. aviation relating to aircraft engines production the us justice department says hired staff from the company as technical consultant those employees then allegedly filed a report containing sensitive details about amir putin's head tout the u.s. over the arrest saying it threatens to worsen relations even for. the practical this is very bad practice it complicates our bilateral relations and i'm not joking we often see no reason for hostile actions of this kind moreover i have every
5:18 pm
reason to believe that sometimes these actions are connected with unfair competition including in the aerospace industry if there is some kind of criminal activity here but it's all law enforcement agencies that should cooperate the united states has made similar moves before arresting a foreign citizens in a 3rd country the chief financial officer of chinese tech giant weiwei was arrested in canada in december over blank for washington. even getting reaction from political analysts about the ramifications of. this is obviously. i think all major powers now realize the competition for technological superiority in the future will be so we're almost be decisive in major power competition the united states certainly adopts the and america 1st strategy and that are not some illustration and it is
5:19 pm
more interested in seeking an advantage is position rather than. gauging economic cooperation and the expense and not say less than it was and so on it emphasizes the fact that high tech is a serious problem for the no stage for china or for russia for every country though because everyone is trying to gain actually is to every other country's high tech and there's a tremendous competition going on and therefore the americans are saying right warning everyone you want prayer price if you in fact steal our secrets but from the american board of view it's quite difficult for them to prosecute someone. in a 3rd country or gain access to the person who had been who they're accused of stealing their high tech secrets. and he is just in india has lost connection with a space probe tearing an attempted landing on the moon south pole mission control
5:20 pm
in bangalore lost contact with the become a robot during the final stage of his descent if successful india were to become the 1st country to land a probe on the moon south pole and according to the country's space agency the trajectory deviated from the target course resulting in a hard landing a rocket carrying a pipe at the know putting them in for a couple of minutes are to. i can often isn't a month ago the $145000000.00 mission is called john dry and to the goal was to conduct a detailed study of the moon's makeup including its geology and i'll tell you. now siberia's harsh cold climate isn't for everyone but coupled with the region's cheap electricity it turns out it's a haven for the 21st century gold rush that is a bit coin mining.

the global currency analyst mark violate the hunger for digital money comes down to trust he's been speaking to max kaiser here's some of the interview that's online now at r.t. dot com. in crypto and big kohain trust is a big word because it's trust. trust as unneeded the transactions are self verifying you don't need a 3rd party to apply that stamp of approval and in this in this report golden age
5:22 pm
of eroding trust you put it quite right up there with all that's essentially gold and because in our together in your view of how to play this collapsing a world of collapsing trust. yes i think it's important to to not neglect generally the technological progress which is going on on the crypto currency side generally which is obviously also being followed and tried to being taken advantage of from central banks when it comes to bitcoin. i mean this discussion is always interesting one of the teachers of bitcoin versus gold gold is . obviously a physically metal it's an internal metal it's just never dying and bitcoin is a man made system so so that would be one fundamental difference but then again from from a from a term of money bitcoin one can make the argument is even harder money than gold in

the medium term so so it would be really an interesting measure of value so i think one needs to follow it closely. a funny thing now i'll be back around 30 minutes time with more updates and to stay with us. 6 guys are financial survival. when customers go by to reduce the price. to now well reduce and lower. that's undercutting but what's good for markets is not good for the global economy. would make this manufacturer come sentenced to public wealth. when the running close to some protect themselves. with the financial merry go round

the sun we know we're. doing the whole middle of the room sick. going to the real news. joining me every thursday on the alex salmond show and i'll be speaking to guest of the world of politics sports business i'm show business i'll see you then. last month u.s. manufacturing shrank for the 1st time in 3 years what impact will this have on donald trump's 2020 reelection bid we're taking a look on this edition of. welcome
5:25 pm
to politicking i'm matthew cook in for larry king recent data from the institute for supply management's manufacturing index shows that sector of the economy shrank for the 1st time in 3 years the index is a widely watched gauge of factory activity in the u.s. and its august numbers show the lowest reading since 2016 is this a cause for concern regarding the health of the u.s. economy and is this coupled with the recent talk of looming recession more bad news for donald trump heading into the 2020 alexion let's talk about this with chris lew the former deputy secretary of labor during the obama administration he also served as the former white house cabinet secretary for president obama he is in washington d.c. chris welcome to the program matthew always a pleasure so let's jump right in is the u.s. manufacturing sector. for the 1st time in 3 years since in august so is this a cause for concern it absolutely is a cause and it needs to be looked at in the context of other economic data that has
5:26 pm
come out last week we saw that consumer confidence fell by the largest amount since december of 2012 and so when you have an economy where manufacturers are trying to deal with uncertainty from the trade war and perhaps aren't producing as many goods or not hiring as many people you have consumers that are possibly pulling back on their spending that's not a good recipe for economic success going down the road so is this are these new numbers a direct result of the u.s. china trade war or are they just about is it a psychological effect can you break down what this actually means. what what causes it well it's a little bit of both i mean we let's also remember that we are now 9 years into this economic recovery and that's a historically long period of time we probably regardless of where we were on trade tensions were probably nearing the end of this economic cycle but what happens when you have companies that aren't sure of their exports not only to china but other
5:27 pm
parts of the world because we certainly have trade tensions with europe as well canada mexico but aren't as aware or aren't as certain about the supply chains and what's they're able to source products from they're not going to produce as many products they're not going to hire as many people and that's the direct consequence and you see that playing out right now in these numbers but it's also more broadly just based on uncertainty in the world right now you've got your a possibly going into recession as well certainly the chinese economy independent of the trade war was slipping as well so we probably are slipping into a global economic shutdown slowdown whether it's a recession is is unclear at this point so many factoring slows does this mean that people are actually unemployed and out of work. no and well we will get the next piece of important economic data later on this week on friday we're getting at the jobs data for the month of august you know we have still continued to see
5:28 pm
a fairly robust jobs market right now although it's slowing down as well the numbers 429000 are i think about 160000 jobs created per month that's down from about $220000.00 just the jobs that were created each month and 2018 so on balance you would still say that the economy is doing well but there are certainly storm clouds on the horizon just so that the audience understands the manufacturing sector of the manufacturing sector makes it's one of the top 5 employment categories in the united states is it not and what are the one of the subcategories of manufacturing obviously there's steel manufacturing electronics consumer goods but break it down for us well no that's exactly right i think manufacturing makes up you know is in the top 5 but i think overall you know it's constraint comprises i think something like 9 percent of the u.s. economy but psychologically it has a much more powerful impact because manufacturing is not only about exports imports
5:29 pm
it's not only about consumer goods it's about transportation it's about warehousing it's about construction it touches so many other parts of the u.s. economy and in certain parts of this country in particular in the midwest in the south manufacturing has placed an outsized role so again it's true measure it's true symbolic importance of the u.s. economy is much bigger than the actual amount of dollars that are involved so in manufacturing is focused you say in the south so these are primarily in the midwest so is it the is it primarily red states or or traditionally red leaning states that have the most manufacturing jobs well it no it is it's a lot of rural jobs we should say that and it's also frankly a lot of jobs in the traditional midwest but we also need to understand manufacturing. looks a lot different than it used to be when i was the deputy secretary of labor i used to visit all kinds of factories i would visit auto plants as well the u.s.
5:30 pm
manufacturing balance is producing far more goods than it did let's say 10 or 20 years ago but it's also doing with doing all of that with far fewer people and in part that's because of automation and so manufacturing as a portion of the u.s. economy has steadily shrunk but obviously the trade tensions we have are creating a series of headwinds that it's struggling with right now it's an interesting conversation the one regarding productivity because of where we're producing more goods and partly that's due to automation but also the american worker is very productive when compared to workers abroad i mean americans traditionally or currently work more hours have less vacation time and so forth what's your assessment of the way american companies actually take care.
