tv Cross Talk RT October 8, 2019 11:00pm-11:31pm EDT
11:00 pm
11:01 pm
hello and welcome across all things considered i'm peter lavelle in the age of what is happened to journalistic standards and competence in the media not long ago it was generally agreed that politics was the art of the possible now one news narrative must prevail and all others must be vanquished as the state of affairs serves the public interest. talking the media i'm joined by my guest joe concha in new jersey he's a media reporter for the hill and our radio host in new york and greenwich we have tom. ereli he is an america's voice news contributor as well as executive advisor
11:02 pm
to cloud hub and in paris we crossed but he's a he is a social media expert as well as teacher at science perry all right gentlemen cross rules in effect that means you can jump in anytime you want and i always appreciate joe i said in my introduction here that one news narrative must prevail and all other is vanquished and i'm like you i watch media all day long all kinds of it ok and there is something. different now than it was a few years ago where you don't just have different opinions if you have a different opinion you're not only wrong but you're morally wrong you're you don't have moral standing for your position in public life that is a very dangerous place to be joe. think about where that declaration is coming from it's coming from air quote anchors who are supposed to be objective be seeking truth supposed be asking questions and listening and challenging when necessary not
11:03 pm
to go into interviews where they have a pre disposed opinion of what they believe is right or wrong in terms of that narrative and most times in the us that narrative is an anti trump narrative therefore anybody who challenges that and we saw that with chuck todd last weekend challenging senator ron johnson a republican who simply tried to make some points and then todd went after him personally said he was pushing quote fox news conspiracy theories and was just saying things to appease president trump who may be watching tim russert is turning over in his grave watching interviews like that because russert went after both sides fairly equally and without the sanctimony that we see from the meet the press moderator that's currently running that show and i couldn't have said it better tom let me go to you but the cynic in me and probably the cynic can all of us is that that strategy is a moneymaker there speaking to the converted already there just. what they're doing
11:04 pm
is they're just giving back to the viewer what they want to hear it has nothing to do with news it's basically virtues signaling i saw exactly the interview that joe was talking about there was no substance there it was just 2 d. legitimize you that's the only message you got from that anchor go ahead tom if you will to a certain extent what we have now is kind of click bait media our country is politically divided here in the us and so different media outlets are really appealing to different segments of society we see that in us we've seen a lot with and this and b c and especially as well c.n.n. they are appealing to a base that they keep repeating what in some ways in some instances really. again we saw the most recently in the way c.n.n. an m s n b c manipulated transcript of president trump talking to the president of ukraine
11:05 pm
and they spliced that and they had to do work with it because they actually put it on screen they made it look like president trump was asking for a favor for him to investigate the present of ukraine to investigate former vice president joe biden that wasn't the favor of the favor was to look into the origins of the russia collusion versus the geisha and so it's really propaganda but sadly it really works is just appeals to that base and embassies ratings have gone up because of this propaganda in the era of trump yeah i can't think of a better person that would like to know the origins of that hoax i mean really the man in the oval office has a right to know i think i think you know that's my personal opinion considering what we've been through let's go to paris now. has had some news media been weaponized now because i have to admit i don't know the media sphere it so well in france as like i would do the u.k. or the united states but it seems to me that mainstream media is being weaponized
11:06 pm
for political purposes its purpose is no longer to inform the purposes is to form opinions go ahead in paris. the purpose is to create ammunition for a battlefield and the battlefield is the social media it's not the media anymore the me to do not really have any influence to be honest they provide a mission to people who troy and broadcast to the media is saying and use it as a minister against other people who. are broadcasting other kind of media so depending on where you live. through all of the media in france we don't really have any kind of priority of media because we're not 3 let's say we don't have the 1st amendment like the americans so we don't have the something that would be the equivalent of fox news in france for example but it might come sooner or later right now it's a topic of discussion in france but my point is media do not have any influence at
11:07 pm
all they lost all their influence from the battlefield that is happening them on facebook mostly facebook and twitter and all those media just providing and they're not weaponized the battlefield is not the media sphere it's the social media ok it's very interesting here you know but cho we have a whole string of former intelligence officials being employed particularly but not only but particularly at c.n.n. and m s n b c so i mean i'm just going to kind of fear arise i think i'm allowed to do that to my program so they hire these guys like brad in our clapper mccabe and so they they have the they still get the top secret briefings you know they have clearance so they get information they tell their employer their employer then says hey joe we just heard from a source which is the source is the contributor and the contributor is on the set
11:08 pm
reaffirming confirming what they learned from their own briefing i mean i find that insidious ok that is not in the public good go ahead joe peter we hear a lot. about state run media right and we'll hear from the c.n.n. center world accusing say fox of that for instance that state run media i see state run media as c.n.n. for instance or m s n b c hiring all these senior intelligence officials c.n.n. has more than 12 former senior intelligence officials on their staff most of all not sympathetic towards the president and we see that obviously with john brennan former head of the cia and m s n b c we see it with clapper at c.n.n. c.n.n. goes out and hires andrew mccabe who do you have indicted who was fired for a law. lying under oath 3 times about leaking to the press it's a quid pro quo do you think mccabe was leaking to i'm going to get c.n.n.
11:09 pm
because they hired him as a big thank you you know giving us everson for mention that turned out to be false anyway i wonder would make cable look like when he's on set in an orange jumpsuit maybe i'm getting ahead of my skis here ok tom i mean it's can't continue with this here no no no go arrest him while he's on so that would i wish him all these odds that i would be the 1st time if i if i got wind of that would be the 1st time i'd watch the end live for years ok send me a tweet ok if you hear of anything ok let me go to tom here i mean state t.v. this is what joe said but tom in many ways in the same vein that we're talking about it's kind of like deep state t.v. to me because what they what they want to do is they want to form the narrative and outlets like c.n.n. and m.s.n. b.c. are more than happy to do their work for them they've been doing it a long time anyway now they're just more open about it go ahead tom. well essentially it's agenda driven media the agenda is to do everything in anything to
11:10 pm
damage president trump and they'll hire anyone actually to do that when you take a step back though it's not all that surprising because in the united states the media is dominated by democrats a vast majority of reporters and people in the media democrats they are based in deep blue sea states deep blue cities and they really just marinating in this liberalism and it comes out every day when they go to work they're not thinking about how to cover the news they're coming to work with an agenda and you just have to remember that c.n.n. they were they hired sarah flora's who was the department of justice spokes person and people in c.n.n. rebelled about that yeah so she no longer has the original post as political editor i mean this is really inbreeding it's ideological inbreeding and it's really a problem because it's creating division in the united states let's go back there are so pretty you said that france doesn't have a version of fox news but you said there is discussion about it what would it take
11:11 pm
for that to happen or what will it take for it never to happen go ahead in paris well we don't have anything like the 1st amendment and that's a huge difference between france democracy and the american democracy there's lots of thing you're not allowed to say in france according to the law this is a problem for many people who express themselves for example people are now law through a prism self in france it might sound weird to an american even to a non american that is not racist because it is totally in a position to the 1st amendment but this is how we work here in france so the diversity in terms of media is very shallow compared to. what you can find in the united states or even what you can find in russia that's the way we work here that's the way we're used to having those media. but keep in mind that roughly one . no more than 25 per cent of the french population have any kind of interest ok in
11:12 pm
your case but then when people do not believe me where is the debate then on the airwaves like the way you describe it it sounds like it's very difficult to have a debate if. there is nearly no debate from time to time there is some glitch in the metrics to so to say that enable some side of the bait of course since we just had some true riff the tremendous attack in the very center of our secret service it's a topic for debate but most of the time there is no debate because most expression that could spark all the debate and not a lot to spend ourself could change but it's going to take some really huge. when they don't know no one here that it's no wonder they're not sure there will it be no wonder the yellow vests came about they have a whole lot to say but they don't get it and they're not heard very much on the airwaves what a pity for france ok all right gentlemen i'm going to jump in here we're going to go to a short break and after that short break we'll continue our discussion on the media
11:13 pm
11:14 pm
in the. city. and i'm going to christ i said i'm not going much to you mama says. welcome back to cross talk where all things are considered i'm peter lavelle to remind you we're discussing the media. ok let's go back to joe in new jersey i'm going to play the devil's advocate here just to be fair here i mean i don't know how to describe donald trump is a media phenomenon i mean it's a it's
11:15 pm
a force of nature i think no one will deny that irrespective of how you feel about him but how how is he treated the the the public sphere the media sphere is is he respectful does he play the role he does because you know that's what so much argued about in the airwaves is that is his form his delivery and i just said to a friend of mine an hour ago but trump speaks trump speak and his followers understand trump speak liberals can't ok and that's one of the great divide in the poll and the american political environment now because one part the liberals are tone deaf to what most at least half of the country is willing to listen to go ahead joe. yeah i find it funny if misspells a word for instance on twitter then you'll have i brought up the word sanctimony during your last break i'll bring it up again you'll have some blue checkers that those are people who are verified on twitter saying oh my goodness he can't even spell x.
11:16 pm
and people just look at that and say yeah i misspell things all the time you do he's not homogenous he's not packaged like i do so 2016 opponent hillary clinton everything was a modernized and packaged in focus group perfectly and that's what the appeal comes from that is not your typical politician but i also hear that trump and i've heard this for 3 years is a threat to the 1st amendment i've never seen more books written about one president then this one and if you don't like that i have to point out these papers and office in office oh yes right it's amazing and we see we see a lot of lament peter around the white house press briefing going away which became a joke it was a complete circus it was grandstanding you might as well just have jim acosta sponsored by irish spring to give him a soapbox to stand on because that's all it was about a cost of making a name for himself if i'm making a name for herself and there is no substance to what the president has done and has done this easily but i'm talking about 4050 times more than any other president is
11:17 pm
speak to the press directly in gaggles when he's on his way to marine one the helicopter on the white house lawn and he speaks directly to reporters more than any president by far that we've seen in history so i think things are going fine when particularly the word is coming directly from the horse's mouth instead of a press secretary and to a hostile press were no one is interested in actually getting to truth anyway it's very interesting you know tom i think one of the problems that the left mainstream media has is that number one they feel that they have lost control of narratives which they believe that they have some kind of god given rights to possess it's always been mystified why they think they have the right and they see that like through. or trump just breaks right through he goes straight to his supporters here let the left to the left liberal media can't stand not being control of narratives and the more they trash as president the more they lose control i mean watch that
11:18 pm
i'm watching m.s.m. b.b.c. and c.n.n. they look at sterile coal i mean i wonder if they need help because they they can't even string sentences together anymore i mean the level of english has crashed ok because there are so enraged i don't even understand what their rage is about their so incoherent go ahead. you know that's a great point peter certainly the bridge because president trump again to your point by using twitter he goes right to his people goes right communicates to them and goes right around the media what i call a lot of times the antitrust media and the other thing president trunk does he does these tremendous rallies where he goes into a local area he delivers his message it's a life they can't manipulate that and then the local media is really forced to cover what's happening so it's a direct way to really communicate with his base and earlier i think you said that you know the liberal media they don't know how to react is that it's almost they have 2 voices there are it's 2 languages they can't understand his language and
11:19 pm
they really are frustrated about the way he communicates and the way he can crisply deliver a message to his followers let's go back to paris here and i'm fascinated what you've said to us on this program i mean because of what i would call an incorrect me if i'm wrong a very limited public sphere of debate in france but i mean doesn't something a situation like that encourage the development of conspiracy theories i mean because you know in america as you've heard all through this program here if you if you if you disagree with the left you're just automatically default a conspiracy theorist ok which is absolutely nonsense but if you have a limited public sphere don't people end up believing that they're not being told the truth or what they're being told is a manipulation i mean i find this really interesting what you've told us here. it's exactly the same thing if you don't agree with the state in france if you're a conspiracy theorist the most the big difference is that we probably have 75
11:20 pm
percent of the population labeled as conspiracy theorist for example 'd a few weeks ago there was a huge industrial accident in france the whole. city submerged by pollution and the state was keeping it was telling people there's nothing to be afraid people were living in a nightmare because the pollution was huge over whole state a while of course states are smaller in france than the united but still it was a disaster and the state kept saying there's no problem there's no problem until people realize that dozens of hundreds of tons of toxic products were burned and that was a major problem for their health so not only nobody believes the state but during the 1st 2 days the major news channel kept saying that if you don't believe what the state is saying you're
11:21 pm
a conspiracy theorist. it's i guess the same thing everywhere until the local gets into power and the liberal media gets into the opposition but we're not here yet in france ok joe is switching gears slightly and one of the thing you know this term dog whistle you know trumps a dog whistle for racists but if you watch media enough and i know you do and i admire your work very much at the hill and your contributions on fox never miss them but it but it's like m.s.n. b.c. and c.n.n. they are dog whistles their entire organizations are dog whistles to make people viscerally react to whatever they think is important at the moment the covington kids all my goodness i mean that was the biggest story of all time until 00 it went away because it was fake we had we see this over and over and over again they blow their whistle joe. and the reason why they could blow that whistle is because peter
11:22 pm
there is no accountability whatever these again air quotes mistakes are made and i don't want to keep using mistakes because that seems innocent. maybe there is some agenda. as tom has been saying maybe there's some agenda behind this or they believe what they want to believe they fall in love with the narrative the clicks are going to come and then if they get it wrong tell me the last time you saw somebody get suspended or fired over a major journalistic mistake that hurts the integrity of that news organization now the problem is that the integrity doesn't really mean anything anybody anymore because of the business aspect that we've been talking about but in terms of dog whistle there was one point in july where i just pulled up the story c.n.n. and m s n b c said the word racist more than 1100 times in a span of 4 days that is almost physically impossible to do yet they did it over and over again because they were talking about president trump and what he had said about the squad so if you say something over and over again like the boy who cried
11:23 pm
wolf in this case the media that cried racist it tends to lose its impact after the 784th time so i think that's why we've talked about how media doesn't have an impact it doesn't have as much as it used to because it's become predictable it's become so biased that half the country here in the u.s. says i'm not listen and i'm not i'm not you know it's the best benedict option i'm not listening to you guys anymore that's what it is it really is. one of the things that. i'm calling this program media conspiracies and this is exactly what we go from one conspiracy to the next and when one loses all of its energy it's on its last legs another one pops right up and you know it pops up just as fast as the epstein story goes away it's amazing one thing i'd like to know and i want our viewers to write to me how is it possible every single liberal out. n.p.r. today and this n.b.c. c.n.n.
11:24 pm
how do you how is it they all the commentators say exactly the same thing through during one news cycle it's amazing existential threat. they do it who sends out that e-mail i really want to understand how they do it because i wish conservatives would do it more often really go ahead tom. it's almost like there is a list serve with a message point comes out from on high somewhere in my suspicion be the conspiracy guy it's somewhere in the party where they all go in lockstep but you're right one for russia collusion to to racism to recession now now we're into ukraine it never stops but again they're just speaking to themselves and to joe's point in respect to accountability there have been some people who have been fired at c.n.n. and a.b.c. news but i think the most important aspect is the drop in credibility with polling i mean rest newson reports had a poll where only 33 percent of voters think the new york times gets it accurate
11:25 pm
most of the time most students almost 70 percent think they're wrong most of the time look at about the no worry of life unless if you're a baseball player and you fail 70 percent of the time to be considered good. let's go back to paris i mean just to jump in go ahead go ahead joe that's the whole point of the program go ahead go ahead and i was about to say tom brought up c.n.n. i'd be a.b.c. brian ross from a.b.c. and then 3 reporters from c.n.n. or got a story on anthony scary movie wrong i asked the question before when was the last time you saw that both of those happened in 2017 we haven't seen any accountability sense what those were going to samples of tom but i mean you know but joe but joe. why shouldn't the public serve the much better than this because it seems to me as tom was pointing out the trust in the media is just plummeting and now what is happening and for me i'm very happy because alternative media that is smart is keep
11:26 pm
is picking up in pace and i think that's one of the the derivative effects i see that tom is agreeing with me here but you know when you lose your credibility like that it's almost impossible to get it back and i think that they won't get that credibility back the one some trump is out of office their business model will collapse marc. words gentlemen that's all the time we have many thanks to my guess in new jersey greenwich and in paris and thanks to our viewers for watching us here at r.t.c. you next time and remember. thinking of getting a new phone the ones we got in her she wrote was as he didn't know until he was trapped in this tiny little wired coach you don't need a crate with him he will just start freaking out and she won't want to spray them
