10:00 pm
oh. it was all. the headlines here on arch international supporters of ousted president clash with police during the funeral of a killed protester that says everyone morale is tells r t the country's interim leader is taking the country in an increasingly affair or a terry in that direction. a stark warning of the trump impeachment hearings with a star witness claiming russia is already firing up the meddling machine ahead of the 2020 u.s. presidential election. and a new spat over a secularism in france a retirement home closes its doors to a 70 year old catholic nun for refusing to take off her habit. and find
10:01 pm
those stories in full over on our website r t dot com i'll be back in about an hour's time with a quick recap of the headlines in the meantime though it's the big picture stay with us. on this week's show well sent the elves are busy at the north pole the grinch is also working overtime to rip you off we will warn you about holiday season scams that are targeting you right now also in the next half hour. we've become so accustomed to mass shootings that only 3 people are dead is a relief how politics permits the killing to continue but 1st bolivia hong kong what in the world is going on i'm all in cook in washington this is the big picture on our 2. america.
10:02 pm
after a right wing coup unseated democratically elected evo morales bolivia's 1st indigenous president who won the october race by over 600000 votes angry bolivians took to the streets it got ugly quickly and morale is fled to mexico what are the issues and who is behind this cool let's ask the author of among other books globalizing the caribbean political economy social change and the transactional capitalist class jeff sprague is a research associate at the university of california riverside he is co-founder of the network for the critical studies of global capitalism a jab by evo was 1st elected back in 2006 so he's had a long run how did bolivia fare under his administration. well
10:03 pm
under morales the government or the country improved significantly and that's what is so shocking for this to happen. the poverty decreased. and of large scale under his government economic investment the country really benefited a lot through that government of the movement for socialism under him under his administration and right now we're seeing a complete rolling back of those positive gains we're seeing what i call the coup of the little pinochet's and they're bringing pinochet style de facto military regime into the heart of south america you know the only one who's made that comparison and since israel election last month and the indigenous race hatred has gripped some members of those indigenous led movement for socialism have
10:04 pm
had their homes ransacked and burned some of been rounded up others killed his replacement military backed sen janina proclaims that the city is not for the indians who should stay in the highlands and she has called indigenous bolivians say tannic to which cherokee activist rebecca nagle replied anti indigenous racism is at the heart of what is happening in bolivia but jeb there seems to be more going on there than racism and we've seen this movie elsewhere literally beneath trouble venezuela is lots of oil bolivia has vast lithium reserves and lithium goes into electric cars and bolivia's natural gas reserves are plentiful you have written that the united states played a key military coup in bolivia how did this unfold. we'll it's as if these little pinochet's have appointed
10:05 pm
a and coulter want to be to be this new president people have gone back and looked at her twitter account where she talks about indigenous people not wearing shoes that they belong in the hills not down in the cities. the defacto military regime i wrote in a piece for website called the gray zone where we looked at these little pinochet's of these military men that are now running the country and how they were trained at the school of the americas the infamous. fort benning georgia department of defense training ground for so many latin american military officials that have committed mass occurs coups across the region and we see this playing out right now just on november 19th there was the massacre in la paz on the 17th there was a massacre in cochabamba and so every few days now there's a new massacre where the regime is openly targeting the negatively racialized
10:06 pm
digitas population and so we see that playing out in real time and this coup this will be studied for years in the future by people at langley because it happens they carried it out so quickly there's a new study talking about how 100000 more than 100000 twitter accounts were made in the days leading up to up to the coup to really flood social media with all of this regime change rhetoric really demonizing the elected government and so there was an ideological component of this and they did it so quickly and they had these people in place these military officials in place following. president trump statement was that these events send a strong signal to the illegitimate regimes inventors. and nicaragua that democracy
10:07 pm
and the will of the people will always prevail we are now one step closer to a completely democratic prosperous and free western hemisphere reading up on this was like reading a novel give us your predictions best case worst case outcomes for bolivia. it's really like 1904 the reality is it's not a victory for democracy like trump is talking about the reality is we see the rounding up of of activists and leaders of morality his party we see the burning of homes of officials of his of his sister the bolivian military even ran over his dog with a tank. there murdering their murdering people in the streets the journalists that align with his movement or that are critical of the who are being kidnapped tell us who are the latin american left leaning network has been taken off the air similar
10:08 pm
to how it wasn't a queer door a few months back and so we really see this war on the left and right progressive forces the right holding in latin america and i think it goes back when we look at . george kennan who was an architect of cold war u.s. strategy the idea was that you can't allow any liberal any any progressive or left leaning. or socialists movements to really gain power and gain strength in the region and there's been this back and forth where at times they try this more soft power democracy promotion you know jet monday or usa id author activist professor we're going to keep an eye on this story and we appreciate your context and perspective on it this week they lie in hong kong where things are getting worse as the clash between protesters and police escalates college students are being urged to leave you have seen our correspondent michelle greenstein recently
10:09 pm
reporting from the troubled streets of hong kong solid work there welcome back adjectives to describe the situation in hong kong adjectives ok violent escalating. agenda driven but nuanced and finally i would say something along the lines of tragic because ultimately it is the people of hong kong who are going to pay the price if the situation continues to escalate it's worse there now than when you were there just a few weeks ago i mean every day we're seeing these violent clashes between the police and these demonstrators so it's certainly not ending friday morning in a rambling 57 minute phone call to fox and friends the president said he was urging china not to send troops that have been massing at the border protestors are mass producing petrol bombs and hurling javelins constructing catapults and slingshots if things go from worst to worse is this instantly going to be 2047
10:10 pm
hong kong reverts and will never be the hong kong we now know. kong is certainly never going to be the same if that's what you mean this situation is not going to be erased from history you mentioned the petrol bombs and the bricks being thrown at the police here are some other things that lead up to china's decision to amass some troops at the border we have people who are voicing their opposition to protesters being attacked on occasion being lit on fire one man was punched in the face simply for speaking in mandarin which is the language of mainland china we had a woman beaten and dragged by her hair again for voicing her opposition to the so-called democracy protesters we've had multiple lawmakers stabbed and like you said this is in addition to the rampant property destruction the offices of lawmakers regularly being destroyed by these so-called protesters and we have petrol bombs again being thrown up police actual weapons we have lasers that damage the police officers eyes being pointed at them which you know seems like nothing compared to the petrol bombs but in addition to that we have a lot of people breaking the law every day so in
10:11 pm
a way you could say that the hong kong police have actually been quite restrained given the amount of violence that the protesters are pursuing you know the footage you came back with was scary looking stuff and now the united states congress has passed the hong kong human rights and democracy after a 20000000 t.v. in. which directs various departments to assess whether political developments in hong kong justify changing hong kong's unique treatment under u.s. law among other provisions it would require the secretary of state to issue an annual certification of hong kong's autonomy require the president to identify persons responsible for abductions of hong kong journalists and others and those complicit in suppressing basic freedoms there require the president to issue a strategy to protect u.s. citizens and businesses from the risks by a revised fugitive offenders ordinance including the state department's travel advisory it would require the secretary of commerce to issue an annual report
10:12 pm
assessing whether the government of hong kong is adequately enforcing u.s. export regulations and u.s. and u.n. sanctions particularly regarding iran and north korea to other hot spots and it would make it clear that visa applicants shall not be denied on the basis of arrest detention or other adverse government action taken as a result of their participation in the protest human rights etc beijing understandably is livid calling this legislation the piece of waste paper of the state on people's daily editorialize that if the u.s. side goes its own way china will take effective measures to resolutely counteract it and all the consequences must be fully borne by the u.s. so this comes out of the a c. at a critical juncture and trade talks with china assuming fingers crossed no military intervention how does the situation in hong kong impact this tense trade
10:13 pm
talks that's underway it's a good question before we get into the economic war between the u.s. and china let's talk about what the hong kong human rights democracy act well actually do because there's a precedent here you know we passed the iraqi liberation act in 1980. and in a way you could say that china is different than all these other countries upon which the u.s. would like to execute regime change like a rock like syria like libya like bolivia like with the like where you began this show china is stronger in many ways than those countries so we can't attack china in the way that we do these other more weak countries but we can use and fuel situations like the one in hong kong to further our own agenda as we know the u.s. is the world's superpower right now so we want to prevent any threat to that now like you said the senate has unanimously passed this the house also passed its own version but exactly what this law would do is this pave the way for further u.s. sanctions and intervention and there are a number of irregularities that we need to talk about with this piece of legislation the 1st documents that the hong kong human rights and democracy act
10:14 pm
references the joint declaration between china and britain this is not a treaty still the hong kong human rights democracy act acts as if it is and says that china needs to follow this or else the us going to take all these steps the other thing is the international covenant of civil and political rights which china has not ratified so it's not legally binding under international law so it's interesting that the u.s. is threatening to punish china if it doesn't of uphold this document that's not legally binding to china but here's what's really interesting the human rights of democracy act says that hong kong cannot make any moves to enforcing article $23.00 of hong kong's own basic law and what is article $23.00 it gives hong kong the authority to a nafta laws that prohibit treason and the subversion of its government and to prohibit political parties from establishing ties with foreign political parties so it's interesting that the u.s. is preventing hong kong from acting so in laws specifically with regards to foreign political influence and that's something we're going to discussing a lot in my special that's airing next week thank you for that and this is a story that's clearly nearer the beginning correspondent michelle greenstein thank
10:15 pm
you for stepping into the big picture thanks a lot coming up another week another shooting is politics perpetuating gun violence in america and with the holidays upon us the wiseguys are owed to rip you off stay tuned for a scam a word. this is the big picture on our t. america. i have concern about new technologies and i think society should and i and i try to help them get engaged in those concerns. but we also should have concerns about doing nothing doing nothing is extraordinarily risky in a world with some point 5000000000 people and a whole series of. ancient technologies that are not necessarily suitable
10:16 pm
for tomorrow. young elephants have come to us. especially brutal touching incidents because the baby elephants often do see their mothers. killed but also be caught up and voted. i do believe they laugh and smile i see it's a nice little months. for the expression changes. we really need to talk about guns in the united states senate floor connecticut
10:17 pm
democrat chris murphy said we can't go 24 hours without news of another mass shooting somewhere in america my kids and millions of others hide in corners of their classroom or in their bathrooms preparing for a mass shooting at their school and this body does nothing about it the good news is that we have a piece of legislation that enjoys 95 percent support in the american public and will undoubtedly make an enormous impact on gun violence rates in this country after murphy finished his speech and left the senate chamber he then found out about that california school shooting murphy had called for the senate to immediately take up h.r. 8 a universal background check bill passed by the house of representatives which along with other measures the house has passed sits in senate majority leader mitch mcconnell's drawer how much could passing that help let's ask ronald hampton 20 year 23 year veteran of the metropolitan washington police department thank you for
10:18 pm
keeping us safe all those years he is a university lecturer on criminal justice he served as an officer. the national black police association has worked with the carter center human rights program and travels the world advising law enforcement ronald welcome back thank you very much for having me that recent california shooter used what i am told is called a ghost gun meaning have i got this right it's assembled from parts so it doesn't have a registration number and obviously there's been controversy about 3 d. printing of guns but other than those situations. how much could universal background checks help i think it would be tremendous really to have this sense to the support for this so. i just don't understand why the congress particularly the the senate hasn't signed on to disown that deal but now no wish for valor so no one what has to happen is probably someone in the senate who opposes this have to
10:19 pm
experience some sort of loss as a result of the gun balance in this country because the when it hits you pression of the you begin to develop all the help a different view in terms of what needs to be done and you can get a round of support to supporters around 996 percent most n.r.a. members want background checks absolutely because it makes sense yeah well it's like reinstate the draft and we'll go to war last 100 percent ok these school shootings are tough the children who died at sandy hook were 1st graders and there have been calls to arm public school teachers good idea bad idea i'm not i'm not down with that had the school teachers because there's enough going on in the classroom that teachers need to be connected to rather than to worry about the gun where is the gun who's going to shoot them i want to shoot to the other valve that may or may not be associated with kids overpower the teacher well that's that's true you have to think about those things so but i just think common sense kind of
10:20 pm
thing that we're working on now a lot of our schools a bill and drills every single month is required to do ga drills office buildings are required to do drills because we're in that place because again i didn't lead this won't take the responsibility in the leadership to deal with this is in a responsible way well if congress won't some states have enacted those so-called red flag laws under which by court order firearms could actually be confiscated after family members or other acquaintances raise concerns for people who are watching us right now. one of the warning signs well i'm going to want to sound this behavior if you work with a person say for the last 3 or 4 years what you've noticed something now about this person in terms of their rationale for doing what it is that did go on they come in maybe sleepy they're also leaving early they're agitated those kind of things and
10:21 pm
then they're talking about death and other things related to their own life and their family's lay then those are the kind of things i think you had to be careful of and you need to say something to not necessarily to him but to a supervisor and the other people so that they can begin to talk about it and bring in some people to have professionals to have a counselor the middle in on this thing is a is is really key to recognize that in these 3 or 4 good points and observations to sort of the begin to address these issues in the workplace in the school house as well as the home and in our community 2nd amendment activists seem to restate and unison that good guys with guns can take care of the bad guys with guns i watch i don't i want you to think back to when you were in baghdad ok you were in uniform and you respond to an active shooter scene you see somebody not in uniform with a gun what do you do you shouldn't you shouldn't and i mean that's it and that's what the that's what we were trying to do we were also trying to do which was
10:22 pm
really down the stood it didn't even understand the more name there's certain things that when you encounter someone with a gun and then you inform you know what to do and you even sometimes have to ask for code of some if they're not even going to form the new you don't have to really act as though that person in the right going to hurt you or someone else so you have to you have to have your gun in your hand ready to use it and you can't hesitate the book so i'm not sure about this and i have been for some time even when i was on for this whole idea on. people we went through extensive training with our and then you had to go back for practice and all that kind of stuff. now i don't think did including that type of repetitious training in formation where we talk about it's a little movie theater full of people who are in the range and some of the earls
10:23 pm
a smoke bomb and they're not only one to be around individuals who don't have the experience and have a great because you don't know how they're going to and then and then again the more guns we have enough of the more possibilities in the percentage is going high in terms of people given that as a result of having the good ronald hampton always good to see a happy thanksgiving here is the thing to do here come the holidays and with the wiseguys who are out to rip you off how to dodge the grinch let's ask the author of a stack of books including identity theft alert 10 rules you must follow to protect yourself from america's number one crime he's attorney bentley university professor and your guardian at scam aside dot com stephen jay jay wiseman steve this just in with the new disney plus video service off to such a start you are reporting that within hours of launch thousands of account holders discovered their accounts have been hacked and the access to their accounts denied
10:24 pm
what happened and how are those subscribers at risk. you know the interesting thing is this is a really good example of a problem that we all face so the disney plus streaming service was something that a lot of people were looking forward to they signed up for it right away and then bam within hours thousands of the accounts were hacked and the people as you say couldn't get access so how they do it well with all of the data breaches that we have some of the information that's out there on the dark way of where the bad guys buy and sell things are plenty of passwords that we used for these hacked websites so what happens is these are up for sale and a lot of hackers just bought those passwords use those for disney plus because what people are often doing too much to our own detriment is using the same password for all our accounts now it's one thing to have your password taken away and you can't use it for disney plus but it's another thing of what if that password you used for
10:25 pm
some website that had a data breach is also the same password that you use for your online banking and that's where the real problem comes here so the warning to everyone is use a unique password for each of your accounts online because you're just in much too much jeopardy because of all these data breaches there are services that can do this for you but that that's a real real concern for a lot of people since many of the swindles we dodge all year begin with the as an e-commerce which is the new north pole so 1st things 1st because web sites are so easy to fake how do we know that we're actually purchasing from a real merchant. it's really tough because i used to teach before i was teaching at bentley in the state prison system in massachusetts and the scammers there used to say you know back when i was doing counterfeiting it took skilled now a 14 year old kid can do anything online and they're right it's very very simple to
10:26 pm
put up a website that looks just like a legitimate web site so how do you know well what you do know is you go online and you remember my motto trust me you can't trust anyone 1st of all you look at the web address if it looks so if it looks far off ok you know on it would do it if the deal looks too good to be true you still don't want to do it but a nice easy trick even if it looks really good is to go to a website called w w w dot who is and this will you can check out the domain name and find out who owns it so if this web site that looks really good and it looks like and it's supposed to be a target website if it looks really good but you go to who is and you find out that it's owned by someone in nigeria it's time to go to another website ok well one way or we'll learn a lure it into these phony shopping sites is by coupons amazing offers of that there we are e-mail big risk correct. yeah and this is
10:27 pm
a problem you know like everything else coupons have migrated online you can get them in text messages you're going to get them in e-mails and the big place is in social media particularly facebook facebook is turned out to be a place where a lot of these fake coupons show up now the problem with these fake coupons are that they will often require you to if you click on them they may require you to take a short survey what they're doing is stealing information from you that they use to make you a victim of identity theft alternatively sometimes by just downloading that coupon you download malware so the best thing to do is again you can't trust them so you go to the website of the legitimate company because there you'll be able to find all of the legitimate coupons that are out there to be used and steve i'm out of time so give me the 10 2nd answer you using a credit card rather than a debit card. for everything use that debit card only as an a.t.m.
10:28 pm
card because you get much better protection with a credit card if you're a victim of a fraudulent use of that card with a debit card your entire bank account as it risks happy thanksgiving attorney author bentley university professor and scam aside dot com host stephen jay jay wiseman thank you. and thank you for watching the big picture i'm holland cook in washington question more are. you.
10:29 pm
so little. so. we'll. we'll. deal.
10:30 pm
and very well may continue watching us until. one explains the bipartisan commitment to an ending wars in foreign military interventions recent polls show the majority of veterans who fought in this century's foreign morris' say it wasn't worth it in 2016 game traction for doubting foreign adventures could be.
