u.k. police named the man who stabbed 2 people to death on the london bridge on friday he was a convicted terrorist released from prison less than a year ago. 3 people were injured in the netherlands in a stabbing attack the suspect is currently at. hand them a libyan town returns to work after she was beaten and publicly humiliated by opponents of the ousted president f.m.r.i. let's she speaks to us about her ordeal. he also cut off my hair they beat me up but they can change my use and i want people to take a step back and think they believe in people cannot live like this. but those are

the headlines you can find out more details on all the stories by heading to a website. and stay with us for the big picture next here on all to international. on this week's show dateline north pole again this year tech will be under the tree what to expect and will batteries be included but 1st is big tech. and should big brother crack down on amazon facebook google and you tube or should all call sam just bought out holland cook in washington this is the big picture on our to america. why do we love the internet things are free there want to know anything google it google is now

a verb want to tell the world do what the president does tweet it no charge want to tell your story with pictures or video facebook and you can broadcast live video free. or is it the buzzword that's emerged is surveillance capitalism controversy about how social media is being used to influence the political narrative presidential candidates and others concerned about privacy are calling for regulators to regulate or maybe even break up big tech companies good idea bad idea let's ask legal and media analyst lionel love lionel media and investigative journalist the tech savvy ben swan on the stump some 2020 dems who reckon that big tech is too big and full trust buster teddy roosevelt's attacks on big oil and big railroads been apples and oranges or apples and apples and i think it's apples and apples and look i think when we talk about what these big
10:03 pm
tech companies have become breaking up twitter because there is too much tweeting going on i don't think anyone's talking about that breaking up google because their search engine is too large and not talking about that but when google gets into finances it begins opening checking accounts when google now as we've learned is getting into health care and accessing 50000000 americans medical records and compiling them and building a lot of them and there's also creating driverless cars but amazon is creating a way for you to get packages faster oh and by the way also facial recognition software that they're selling to police departments and monitoring their homes. tech is now finding ways to immerse itself in every single aspect of our lives and i think that's where politicians will be able to get some traction when they say if you want to be huge in one particular facet that's fine but you can't co-mingle all these different industries bringing them together compiling data on everyone i think that's where they've gone too far and everything we tilt technology technology remembers recently we all got an email that i wager very few bothered to

read subject line was changes to youtube 2 or terms of service including content is the responsibility of the person or entity that provides a tool that service if you see any content you believe does not comply with this agreement including by violating the community guidelines or the law you can report it to us lionel this is an example of the safe harbor the social media enjoyed section $230.00 of the communications decency act as i understand it it draws a distinction between a platform and a publisher counselor translate the legal ease to english all of the station that is all it's gone now very simply imagine platform as a billboard. here's a billboard put up whatever you want and think about a publisher as a newspaper newspaper editorial ice and i can the fact i can limit i have
10:05 pm
a say in what goes there now in the old days various platforms and facebook and google ever they want to go both ways they want to say listen we're just the platform i'm not responsible for you want to put up a speech or whatever but then because they're actually tools of the government they started to say i'm taking your information down i think that's a less than reliable source so then they became publishers well the government said well what's it going to be if you're a publisher you're going to be subject to libel laws and you're going to be subject to defamation especially when you re publish something if you want to remain a platform be a platform but don't limit it here comes to 30 they say here's the best of both worlds you can be a publisher and not be held liable so long as you make some effort to have rules so basically remember the government think back there is the same it's not is that big brother the days of trust busters and and standard oil and the sherman any test or act that's over with different well to your point much of the push about regulating
10:06 pm
social media comes from the political right which complains that what seen in social media and what pops up in internet search skews left despite claims from facebook founder mark zuckerberg and others that it's all algorithms as twitter announced it would no longer accept political advertising congressional democrats lambasted zuckerberg for not fact checking political ads that facebook excepts here is mark zuckerberg in the hot seat you announced a new ad policy that gives politicians a license to lie so you can earn more money this division i suppose from a business perspective. the very small percent of our business that is made up of political ads does not come any work. close to justifying the controversy that this incurs for our company so this really is not about money our policy is that we do not fact check politician speech and the reason for that is that we believe that in
10:07 pm
a democracy it is important that people can see for themselves what politicians are saying yet the federal communications commission or who newly inaugurated president elevated the f.c.c. chairman reckons that everybody in the internet economy should face the same rules whether it is consumer privacy or deciding what is published and what is not. ben it is ironic to hear that the free marketeer who led the charge to kill net neutrality has it that way or is it not. free marketeer i would disagree with that phrase i think is an authoritarian i think that this is part of what we're seeing so when people on the right think that they're being. mistreated by big tech companies because they're on the right i think they're incorrect it's because big tech is authoritarian and it fits with within an authoritarian government structure in the authoritarian societal structure as
10:08 pm
opposed to a libertarian or free thinking structure but look mark zuckerberg is now trying to be the law in the free speech he is the new p.r. campaign that he's on it's ridiculous mark zuckerberg does not believe in free speech because if he did he would stop using those algorithms which absolutely exist and do limit content and hide content in fact he said in those same hearings that the algorithms are used to dissuade people from watching or discourage watching of content that these book doesn't like what does that mean it means it's hiding your content and yes it's an algorithm but remember this no algorithm programs itself some engineer at facebook is creating the algorithm some engineer google is creating the algorithm these things don't just manifest on their own and so someone is giving. actions to one of the things we saw with the project leaker from google who spoke out he explained this m.l. fairness machine learning fairness technology they use and that technology
10:09 pm
essentially is being fed by humans who are saying this is fair and this is not somebody had to write it well here come the holidays when e-commerce is sure to break new records now that amazon is the new north or a wall street journal investigation found 400001 152 items for sale through amazon had been declared unsafe by federal agencies were deceptively labeled or are banned by federal regulators counterfeit products which amazon has struggled for years to eliminate are another sore spot and there's also a stink about amazon directing you to their products rather than 3rd party mirch 2 part question number one what's wrong with that at c.v.s. i see store brand items with the same ingredients very similarly package side by side with more expensive products they're knocking off and if the amazon redirection is wrong has amazon just gotten too big to get it right lionel then ben
10:10 pm
well the idea is that you're taking the thrill out of my childhood the idea that i can't buy ever the all of the bag of broken glass or whatever it is you're doing right now is for some reason you expect amazon to be fair it is just like we algorithm is this magical potion i don't i know this is the holiday season but we come to. bend how about it what is wrong with them so on their own mirchi have asked for a certain type of item sure i don't think there's anything wrong with it i think the problem is that amazon was built on this idea that they were superior to other sites because they allowed those 3rd parties to have access and to sell their goods it would be. when you mention c.b.s. this would be similar to if you walked into c.v.s. and said i need to buy a razor and c.v.s. hung a black curtain over all the other razors they said except for their own so when
10:11 pm
you're searching you say oh there it is i can't even see the others it isn't that it's unethical it's that it's not being a good partner to the 3rd parties who have brought themselves to amazon and quite candidly have helped to build amazon over all this time and now amazon same were big enough we don't need you so we can use a version of bait and switch in loss leader in the in the on whatever the retail practice is. and the 2002 thriller minority report tom cruise played a cop whose job was to arrest intent criminals before they committed crimes. they just what's come the bahamas one male one female killer white $47.00 from intel or is. placing you under arrest for the future murder of sarah marks you demand. future b.c. seem pretty futuristic 17 years ago back to the future former congressman and presidential candidate ron paul is wary that this is coming true he writes that

attorney general william barr recently sent a memo to law enforcement officials announcing new federal initiative that would use techniques and tools developed in the war on terror such as bass surveillance to identify potential mass shooters those so identified would be targets of early interventions which would include the disregarding of 2nd amendment rights as well as the imposing of mandatory counseling and involuntary commitment and ron paul notes that some mental health professionals argue that even holding certain political beliefs is a sign of mental illness and he warns that his words attorney general ron barr has been trying to force tech companies to allow the government to have a backdoor for accessing a lot. tronic information lionel whenever you and i talk about this stuff you interrupt me and say it's already been happening for 5 years and you survived the big tech and big brother are already doing things that would horrify people such as
10:13 pm
this couple of things big tech and the government are the same big tech is basically a propagandistic kind of a p.r. agency for 4 deep state if you will deep state police state shadow government whatever you want to call it and by the way they've been doing predictive programming in the u.k. for years based upon things like weather when where you are and basically listening to the sound so the idea. is sounds farfetched but remember whenever you see something why there this is a precursor this was written a long time ago and the people who write these stories are basically writing the laws right now and the technology and irony of course is happening right now that we're the only difference is with minority report the whole point of the movie which by the way i think is one of the greatest. is that there was always a minority report right 2 of the the oracles would see the same thing and there was one that saw something different big tech doesn't see anything different it all fits the same and says this will absolutely happen ben swan and lionel thank you for stepping into the big picture indeed coming up already you know what will be

6 that's right tell us that slavery. in nato military alliance is a relic from the cold war back then it was relevant and even necessary today it is an alliance in search of a mission that search as almost weekly in jail eastern expansion towards russia but a lingering question remains is the average american and western european interested in a war over the summer the school year and i think. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas everywhere you go and again this year tech gifts will be under the tree and its annual holiday tech spending forecast the consumer technology association is forecasting $97.00 b.n.
10:16 pm
1000000000 in mirch $187000000.00 of us that's 3 quarters of usa adults surveyed plan to purchase a tack gift and don't just think gadgets streaming service subscriptions and video games are emerging as popular tech gifts 7 in 10 of us will give some sort of content 43 percent will give video game discs 39 percent will gift service like netflix or hulu but there sure will be hardware under the tree too and if your santa is stumped there is also survey data on gifts we want to receive of this year here with the 21000 top 5 wish list radio countdown style is radio's top tech talker dave grave line host of into. do tomorrow which is the coolest thing on the weekend on a couple of 100 radio stations across the usa and around the world and you can hear and see who show it into tomorrow dot com they've joins us from our team miami
10:17 pm
welcome back pal well thank you all and always a pleasure almost 25 years we've been doing this show we'll keep doing it till they catch us i guess. how about that new v.c.r. still flashing 12. well when we started almost 25 years ago the late is great is newest thing for the holidays was this thing called d.v.d. so that we we've seen a whole lot of stuff obviously over these years and other coasters all right back to the future number 5 on the list is wearable technology and if they can fit bit you just scratched the surface this research forecasts that over 9000000 smart watches will sell this holiday season 2 percent increase over last year dave who is the competition for apple watch and what else is school or hot in wearable technology. well actually holland fewer people are buying dedicated fitness trackers these days and that's because those features are built into all the major
10:18 pm
smart watches for example which is why companies like fitbit and even garmin who used to do fitness trackers have also come out with full featured smart watches now to stay competitive and of course one of the top smart watches one that is actually rated higher than the apple watch according to many tech journalist and again the one i use is the samsung gear smart watch it also pairs nicely with i phones my son chris has a phone and he uses one of these gear watches but so just because you may have an i phone doesn't mean the only watch you can use is the apple watch and by the way it's not called i watch other products in the wearable category that are popular are things like the silent beacon this is a safety device very similar to that old time i've fallen and i can't get up the device only a lot more high tech you can use this place phone calls alert family and friends you can even enable g.p.s.
10:19 pm
tracking to help a loved one find you and keep an eye we ask a lot of feedback on our show about tablets i disagree with c.t.a. on tablets being in the top 5 these days phones are getting physically larger and more powerful especially the new large foldable phones tablets do seem to be somewhat less in demand than in the past but you know they're doing their countdown yeah the number 4 on the wish list from c.t.a. was tablet computers and that's a surprise me too dave i think of this market as saturated now. yeah i think it is in fact quite saturated and that's why it may have jumped the gun a little bit on your countdown for you but i'm finding it very surprising that they're thinking that tablets are going to be as high up on these wish lists as they are still popular no question but you've got. also look at things like the surface pro and certainly the chrome book those things can save you a lot of money and still give you some great opportunities much of which
10:20 pm
a tablet can do between that and a laptop a full fledge laptops and some to think about all right number 3 on the list televisions and there's a whole alphabet soup of new tech t.v.'s dave decode it for us and which type of t.v.'s are the best bargains right now well and always a good question old lead t.v.'s or organic light emitting diodes do look much better than a typical l.c.d. but they are typically more expensive for more affordable middle ground you want to do things like looking at the quantum dot displays from companies like samsung visit go and t.c.l. now when buying a new t.v. go for a 4 k. if your budget allows you'll be future proofing still no on air broadcast from t.v. stations and 4 k. but there is a lot of 4 k. streaming content now including netflix apple t.v.
10:21 pm
amazon prime video and yes even the new disney plus channel no need i don't think any way to go for an 8 k. set yet right unless there's no content right exactly there's a lot of really monitor proofing yeah there's a lot of 4 k. stuff on you tube it looks great and the prices have come down on those 4 k.'s our 2nd most hope for holiday tech gift smartphones and dave this latest i phone version has it now satisfied early adopter demand and what's new with android phones because they do out number i phones right. oh considerably but yeah you're right holland apple fans seem to be very happy with the latest i phone one reviewer called the best phone apple has ever made users seem very happy with battery life and the certainly the camera quality but some say the screen isn't as good as some of its android counterparts as you mention android currently has an 87 percent
10:22 pm
market share nothing really major early new though with android or i phones for that matter except because they all do the same stuff just faster and better certainly much better cameras on both platforms these days the main problem i think with both is that they've gotten ridiculous lee and i think unnecessarily expensive for their top and models all right kill the temp and your role here comes the number one tech gift we want this year and it may surprise you dave gave you a hint a moment ago it's laptop computers and this may explain the other gift that dropped out of the top 5 this year each year desktop computers were among the top 5 and dave i think this is unsurprisingly with tablets still on the list what can't a high end laptop do that only a desktop can. nothing they can pretty much do everything these days the the biggest issue i think with laptops remains the ability to easily
10:23 pm
upgrade components but then you have a couple of exceptions to travel the world literally with this new panasonic toughbook 55 because it's got many swappable modules so you can do all sorts of things with it very popular for police and military not yet consumer model but you want to stay tune for that but you'd be hard pressed to find any laptop these days that doesn't rival a desktop in fact a body year ago i went to a high end laptop connected to a big monitor and keyboard and mouse myself and away from my desktop machines for the 1st time you said a mouthful when you said tough because you know how much i travel and the road is tough on the laptop it's worth getting something sturdy. oh very much so especially if you're going to bang it up a lot and if like you and i we travel a lot it gets banged up in our case we actually ship the toughbook and with our
10:24 pm
audio and video equipment that we don't worry about carrying on because it's not going to get damaged it literally can handle the abuse which again is why it's really popular with police and military construction that sort of thing especially well i've said is still stumped consider gifting a smart home device 6 in 10 adults in this survey said they're giving smart doorbells that enable you to do surveillance scare off or admit people remotely and every time dave is here we love saying alexa just to wake up all the smart speakers who are watching dave the graph of the smart speaker sales looks like a hockey stick with over 11000000 forecast to ship over the holidays many users have them in multiple rooms of the house now and now alexa has gone mobile with that in car unit has it work and. well it's working very well but to be fair you also better say ok google now we've woken up the other side of most of the other
10:25 pm
smart speakers but the biggest use based on our listener response seems to be listening to streaming music very popular now coming in a very close 2nd asking questions another big use of course is the home automation obviously turning on lights closing the blinds now even changing the t.v. channels and volume your new voice remote if you will and you talked about the new feature of well we've got alexa auto as well and it's very handy you can do all sorts of things from the car you can play games of course with smart speakers are young cameron loves to do 20 questions all the time with alexa in the car they can be used as sound machines to help you sleep not while driving but others in the car or at sir. only at home but to your point about the eco auto keep your eyes on the road and have the same functionality though i like using it to add to my shopping list when i'm driving to the store. and that seems to make
10:26 pm
a difference not as eco auto go on line is it its own ip address is that your smart car is ip address need a hotspot you need your phone and that's how it works when it's your smartphone just like you would anyway which is kind of redundant because a lot of people are saying yeah well if i have a like i have it on my phone i just push the alexa button on my phone but it's kind of cool to throw a little device that you could also put on your ac vent in the car and of course just like any other alexa device it has a little blue light that flushes when you get it's attention and you know you're communicating with it but you're not having having to watch it dave grave line every time you come on our show i feel as though we have been swept into tomorrow thank you for joining us from our team miami and if you don't get dave's radio show on a station near you you can hear and see it at into tomorrow dot com merry christmas
10:27 pm

a pleasure to be here so so we've spoken to some of was brilliant minds and your must 1st woman interview and i'm very excited to talk to thank you special about the brain because it seems to be the turn no topic so you are very. well known and respected neuroscientists and you have covered many aspects of human brain and how it works and all of that and i have talked neuroscientists and most of them tommy that we're very dual beings that brain and body are 2 separate entities one is. by the other they all seem to somehow stick to this theory i want her you think there are really 2 separate things the strange image of the brain on the body also look a bit weird if you that was the case. no they're very integrated if you think about it the immune system the and the crown the homocysteine them are so.
