means that russian athletes won't be able to participate for their home country and things such as the tokyo 2020 lympics we even understand the world cup in 2022 is in doubt we know the winter olympics is out it also means though that russia will be able to bid for it won't be able to host any sporting major sporting events in the 4 year period also government officials won't be able to attend major sporting events and it means that russian officials won't be able to sit on things such as international sporting committees or international sporting boards and the russian flag will be banned from any major events now we do understand that it means that russian athletes who have no cloud of suspicion over them in regards to any duping issues will be able to participate in certain events but they'll have to do so under a neutral flag so they won't be able to compete for the glory of their home country

the decision that awarded russia the world cup and 20 teams there's there's clearly an international effort by the exact same countries that are opposing russia at every turn at the u.n. security council and with regards to syria and also over issues surrounding the ukraine so this is an extension of the cold war in fact it was never this fat in the cold war because in the cold war at least the 2 countries seem to for the most part respect the sporting arena as a neutral arena where politics wasn't going to really contaminate that although we did have the issue of do moscow olympics in 1980 which were boycotted but and also the los angeles olympics after that $1004.00 but that left a big scar on a lot of athletes careers that left a big scar on the sport in general because it wasn't an international a full international competition and there really robbing not just russian athletes

to this regime as well that it would remove them if they qualify for the 2022 world cup and in qatar that's. it's unspeakable what that means in terms of. this is just the national mood. really is that this is an effort to isolate russia on the international stage with it also means that possibly less people will visit russia from foreign countries because russia will not be able to host or mount international competitions is well that was the major people the people diplomacy. victory for russia the 20 teen world cup those who did attend those who weren't scared away by the propaganda that was being run nonstop before the world cup in russia. quite a few people away including british supporters knowsley empty empty scenes in their games in the world cup that's all part of this is well it's this is part of

really make headlines it's not such a big deal why do you think that it is. there is an absolute double standard in this case. with all of these governing bodies and i'm going to extend this in some people might disagree but any of these international bodies let's take it out of sport for a moment let's look at how russia is treated it's not allowed to give import into allowed to fight this double standard for instance this is the same in the o.p.c. w this is also with the dutch led joint investigation on the downing them $817.00 russia is not allowed to see the evidence russian investigators are not allowed to be involved malaysian investigators or malaysian represents weren't allowed to be involved in that either until the last minute so this is a clear pattern in terms of international relations and it seems like with all of these governing bodies they seem to be a lot on to their own and they seem to be heavily weighted in favor of the u.s.

or canadian or say nato member state led agenda and the united states wields a lot of power in the united nations as a lot of people know and a lot of backroom deals a lot of intimidation a lot of deal making going on behind the scenes constantly and any of these international decisions and this is no different at all what this represents symbolically in terms of international sport is huge it's really airbrushing russia from the international sports from the olympic games this is something that is part of the history of the country is robbing russia of future gold medal winners these are people who go on to be role models fighting so this has a devastating effect for generations to come and i'm sure that it absolutely is the intention by those who have question this from the u.s. from canada from the nato member states 100 percent i'm certain. if this is not a political decision if this is meant to help and doping at the end of the day is

making athletes complete compete under a neutral flag really the way to do that. that's a very small consolation. i think it's even banning the flags appearance at international competitions and there's all sorts of restrictions involved in that and back to the double standard question there's a number of american athletes that have been or are guilty of doing this very thing and who have been allowed to compete through various loopholes have been designed and the enforcement doesn't seem to be coming very hard on the u.s. side for that and so these are issues that american athletes don't have to worry about quite frankly and as well as athletes from other countries but russia has complied with everything that was in their interests to why would they not comply 100 percent with everything that was being discussed asked of them by water through

this appeal process of course they would and still this decision was rendered nonetheless and it's extremely it's a very lopsided application of due process and justice but it just reflects everything else that we're seeing in every other multilateral international organization the now russians being treated in the attempt to isolate this country . global affairs analyst patrick henning sending you for joining us on the program today. now for anyone just joining us we are breaking down our breaking news i want us decision to ban russia from international sports for the next 4 years to do that we're joined live in the studio by alex. now there's a lot to this ban it's not just the athletes can you break down what the details of the ban really do include well again in about 45 minutes we'll know the full extent of it when the press conference starts in switzerland and we'll probably have more clarifications from the world anti-doping agency itself but what we've heard so far

from the press office of. you know a couple of members of water actually speaking to the press this looks to be a very wide ranging but. essentially all sports competitions over the next 4 years but as we've been saying all along the participation of russia in those international major international sporting events like the fifa world cup in 2022 and like next summer is euros like the hockey ice hockey world championship that russia is due to host and the volleyball and the beach ball and so many others it all depends individually on those organizations hosting them because. the only major sporting organization which is in full i should say cahoots with the world anti-doping agency is the international olympic committee because the chairman of the i.o.c. already said you know very straightforwardly unequivocally that whatever decision water makes the will that he had so that if water decides that russia should not

participate as a full fledged nation in the next summer's olympic games in tokyo and 2 years later in france then it will be it will happen that russia will be in those 2 competitions which is almost set in stone at this point to you know judging by what the water members have been saying but interestingly enough you know russia again being slapped for the same thing the very same incident and i'm talking about the very same incident in the sense that russia was not let's say caught doping again or anything like that it all. all goes back to that story where russia had originally been banned from the games so this is basically a continuation of that story it's not something new it's all about data from 201215 and we're about to go into $22.00 and even more so water itself. has done a great job in fighting doping over the past year it had full rights as a member of the world and i don't think family and at the same time we have not only heads of international. agency like us.

but also father the vice president of the world anti-doping agency. who had this to say about russia's potential about. i want to complete that we had 2 choices and i supported. today i'm afraid that if we. didn't support to see. last year i was present at the wada executive board meeting and book where they essentially decided that the anti-doping agency and the nation should be given a 2nd chance to gauge should be reinstated what i heard was a very specific line that if we want russia to get rid of doping or any other country the world 'd for that matter we need to let the anti-doping agency work right. just banning athletes or making them compete on the neutral flag is not the

solution because it makes people angry it makes people even more hungry for someone to get angry they make more mistakes. in the huddle and the vice president would just listen to she was the only person on the entire water board to vote against reinstating russia last year so i suspect that she is now walking around with a whole attitude just like from us but then again we have to ask ourselves the question the not the blanket ban butt. even the ban on competing on the russian flag what does that really solve fair enough the accusations put forward by wada are very serious i mean it's not about again you know doping a lot of athletes like the allegations were last time it's about trying to conceal the data from that previous scandal and trying to make sure that you know it doesn't come out again if these allegations are true the individuals reportedly who perpetrated this kind of stuff they should be singled out. in all criminal

investigations it's not for me to decide for us to decide it's not for the you know the corresponding 'd authorities to decide but it's not it has nothing to do with the athletes themselves and we have to ask ourselves a question in this regard and this might be an unpopular opinion but anyway what is doping itself doping is the constant need for success for overcoming your rivals where is this need for success coming from this is coming from huge homicide zation of sports who are the powerhouse of this sports this is the united states the u.k. and many other western countries who are basically pumping billions and billions of of money of different money of dollars of pounds into sports making sure that you know athletes want to compete more they want to run faster they want to jump it's all been going on for like what 20 years this is a great debate to be had you know for instance how football has changed thanks to money how different other sports have changed thanks to the money invested but again this kind of hunger for success that breeds doping itself and it is really

bizarre to hear from the people representing that part of the world which is prolific in terms of pumping sports with money that you know a country should be banned from from participating in major tournaments i mean this is not even a double standard it's just mind boggling and mind exploding situation to be considering no money in sports is very much a catch $22.00 i know i have to explain to people all the time how college sports are so popular in america people don't understand the colleges and i have to explain that it's all money they've done such a good job it's a business. exactly that people become interested and they invest their entire souls into it you know we're talking all the time that this is something that has never been seen in such a scale just recently went to a student football championship and you can see those students playing you can see there the quality of their football is not that strong but you understand that they are pushing to with something they're trying to have those competitions organized so they get well not maybe to the level of college sports in america but somewhere they're not what what they're doing is under the premise of fighting for clean

sports they are killing all of that as well because i don't understand how you know people would be able to develop sport without any perspective of having a chance to compete internationally and again something we mentioned earlier not just the fact that people can be but it's also about the state reputational stain which is now. over even clean athletes most of the states and russia. that you know you belong to the nation which had this and that this is just this is just preposterous in my mind exactly at this point you hear doping and you start thinking russia there's no choice it's just already ingrained in everybody's mind and we're talking about how the ramifications of this decision they're saying that this is a 4 year ban we've been talking about this since how how many years already but again the 4 years after the 4 years it's not going to stop because you can russia also can't make any bid for hosting further international sports going forward and it's unclear exactly which international sports are going to fall under this ban

like you said we're waiting for that press conference in about 30 minutes where hopefully we'll have a few more details and we'll have more response from organisations like feet and whatnot to see exactly what the details are going to come down at but at this point we have likely we're going to have athletes that are going to need to prove that they've never doped so they have to prove that something doesn't exist haven't they already 'd proved it i mean the up scores of clean athletes who won the gold medals and they've proven it already they never passed you know you never never had a positive result of that on the. and yet they are again saying that you can compete if you prove how many more doping tests they should produce how many more saliva blood or urine tests they should give out for them to be you know sort of vindicated in the eyes of the corresponding organizations again if i had to put money on now on whether russia would get a full you know full extent of the ban for the 4 years i don't think it will but the olympics itself the next 2 games to tokyo and france it's almost out of the

question now seems to be out of the question unless the appeal is won but that's already tragic enough for hundreds and hundreds of athletes that's already a massive human tragedy and again it's not because of something they've done it's because of something that certain of is someone allegedly have done so why not focus on eradicating the problems caused by those. allegedly caused by this process instead they are just trying to sort of wipe everyone off and this is the most bizarre thing on exactly if somebody commits a crime you put them in jail you don't put the entire city where they live but anyway i this point we know that russia has said that they're going to appeal this they have 21 days to appeal to cast how likely do you think they're going to get any movement on that and even if they did like you said the olympics in tokyo they're right around the corner even if they did appeal would they be able to make that sort of deadline you know there is an interesting point which we haven't yet mentioned about a week ago there was a press conference of the head of the russian olympic committee. and he

specifically said that the russian olympic team is preparing for the tokyo games regardless of what the december 9th decision will will mean. and when obviously people started asking questions why you know if you get a blanket ban and and russia would not even go there what's the what's the point in preparing for this games and he said listen unlike the previous situation no one has ever laid any accusation towards the russian olympic committee in the previous situation when russia got a ban from the 2 previous of the games. it was directly laid out at the feet of the russian olympic committee and they said you are guys to blame you about from attending the games officials are banned from attending the games so it's a full book for the russian olympic committee this started you said we we've been waiting for any kind of accusations towards us none has come so theoretically. on a more practical terms that has not accused the russian olympic committee but right now it actually says that it has because it is essentially banning the officials

from again from competing and participating in the olympic games so this is all very you know a twisted twisted story that's for the appeal you know i would say it's $5050.00 it can be overturned it can be you know. proven again so it's really hard to say it's just depends on what kind of proof russia bring to the table that. do have an indicator because right now it looks pretty grim and in the studio unraveling this water ban for us thank you. now the u.k. has anti-doping agency has supported wada's decision saying it's the only right one u.k. agency has its own controversies though it cleared heavyweight boxer and whites despite the presence of steroids in his sample and justification it said the levels were very low and not caused by any fault on whites part. of look at how a double standard appeared to reign in the sphere of anti-doping. for years the

national sports competitions have. been hijacked by the russians for decades it seems that russian olympic athletes have been secretly doping to gain a competitive edge doping system secret labs double agents helping russian athletes cheat their way to the medal stand at the olympics this is now boynton the finger at a whole range of sports in a former what a staffer told us today you know this isn't a bombshell this is a nuclear warhead the russia doping investigation has become the leviathan of sports scandals it's towering so high above everything else in fact it's hard to notice other violations in its shadow bribery a secret doping society medics and coaches going rogue this year alone has seen plenty staggering revelations none of which could compete with russia the when it comes to the fallout and case one a kenyan olympic champion.
