heart of the city of course not 10 minutes away from the kremlin from red square and whatnot what more can you toss that's definite at this point well there's more news coming in about casualty figures 3 according to eyewitnesses media accounts one traffic police officer was killed at the scene he unfortunately was targeted by this automatic gunfire come to his injuries at the scene in terms of casualties again we are saying there are 3 casualties that is probably accurate but what we do know what we don't know rather at this stage is whether those casualties are any further security personnel or if there is one attacker or of all 3 attackers were killed at the scene we just don't know right now i think was adding to the confusion is somewhat witness accounts say these perpetrators or perpetrator would dressed in security personnel uniforms now things might have got confusing in the run up in the panic as people fled the scene so we can't really take them at face

value what we can confirm and this is official from the f.s.b. is that situation is no longer an active shooter situation that means the attacker or attackers have been killed and they are trying to establish their identity but that doesn't mean the danger has passed the security forces are saying there is some sort of device that the attacker or attackers may have left behind in the building they are doing a sweep of the area to locate that device and see if it poses any danger to the public that would also of course explain some of the security measures that have been brought in at the scene namely the blocking of mobile phone signals that they are possibly cautious about setting off any devices any any 2nd divorce. that is why the signal my from blocks and of course as you can see the live pictures there streets absolutely deserted very unusual sight so that was a good while and not long ago we have video from the actual incident while you can hear shots being fired in this area looked much different not long ago let's take

a look. again these are live pictures from the scene itself but there we heard large numbers on going up shots being fired there which is of course going to cause that sort of chaotic scene. yes absolutely and the security services all going to be looking for any patency any sort of timing quite shocking scenes that we do of people being shouted out to run to run and run away and we saw videos earlier of people running along the central moscow streets such harming was just getting back to that today of course was putin's annual press conference you mentioned quite right exactly it's an event that attracts a number of people to the capital nearly 2000 journalists events and putin offer

getting some sort of clarification here about the timing the timeline behind what happened 8 sorry 610 was when the incident began we're hearing that 3 unidentified attackers entered the reception area of the f.s.b. the federal security service building and opened fire with automatic weapons in that exchange of gunfire 2 of the attackers were killed there with entities being established one of them then fled there he fled outside into the street and that as we understand where the traffic police officer opposite the building where he was tragically killed we understand now just getting a bit more of a timeline here that the attacker managed to run away about 3400 meters away he ran down the the street kwasniewski more street that's again a very busy. street in the center of the capital that's likely the pictures that we're seeing now where you can hear the shots being fired if you can then you can play that clip where you can hear the shots being fired extremely loudly and

a large number of them ongoing if we can listen to that again. you see scenes you just back to see. you know what i'm going to also sounds it's like here in a war zone and you can imagine the panic those people went through as they went about their daily business going home on their way home from work only to bump into this gunfire or be told to run for their lives in fact we can hear someone shouting over and over why not run and thankfully people listening and running away from that area which is of course now in. this point into you we've actually spoken to an eyewitness account we'll try to get that to you just a little bit later one eyewitness. telling you that he was there at the time of the attack you heard the sounds of gunfire and the police who were on the site the traffic police the security officers screen look people to run to get away and

perhaps their reactions their very quick thinking prevented more more casualties in what's already been obviously a tragic day for the security services anyway the f.s.b. are they using now that attack or the surviving attacker ran away from the main building he barricaded himself inside a nearby house where during an exchange of gunfire he was killed at 715 his identity is being established we are now treating this as a terrorist attack but some of this might have been obvious of course from the outset but we needed that sort of confirmation to rule out any other incident this is now being treated as a terrorist incident and will be will be responded to accordingly of course when all those conflicting reports are coming in it is important to get down to the facts of exactly what it is so you are saying at this point we do have confirmation that there were 3 attackers and then they have all 3 been neutralized at this point but you were saying that this is still does not mean that everything is all safe in

that area correct yeah indeed this is no longer an active shooter situation we do have confirmation that all 3 attackers. killed there's no more danger to the public from that but they are still searching the area for any devices the attackers may have left we don't know how many there are we don't know if they pose any danger at all but the bomb squad on scene emerge the ministry of personnel also on the scene to deal with potentially any fires and explosions that may have happened as a result that will no doubt take several more hours to clear of course that lead turned into a crime scene where forensics officers will come in and try to establish piece by piece exactly what happened who was involved and ultimately of course their motives and exactly what we're going to see now as what would be seen. more of the calm before the storm now that the situation has been taken the under control now they're going to have to identify those attackers and try and figure out exactly why this happened because of you as you've mentioned earlier this is not something that you see very often in moscow in russia in general and so this is going to be

something that's extremely surprising for people who found themselves in the area at that point indeed and investigators have been seen and they've already opened a criminal case and it was just this is within the last hour of course the start up of the what you can call case has been open. for attempted murder of police officers serving security personnel so investigators will be taking it from there as the bomb squad does their job hearing any sort of device public safety with approaching here for a bus stop pushing slightly what happened who was involved and what. exactly that's going to be interesting to figure out exactly what their motive was because if they started inside the building it does indicate that they wanted to do the most damage there and possibly even try and break in further but it sounds like they were actually met and stopped in just the lobby of the building and that one attacker

a kalashnikov assault rifle they were 2 of those attackers were neutralized one of those attackers that managed to escape he played into the street where he basically shopped one traffic police officer that has been confirmed we are getting information from the ministry of health that at least 2 f.s.b. 2 russian security services offices have been wounded in a critical condition there saying they've been taken away to hospital now the danger from these attackers from the shooters has now passed their speed have been found they've been neutralized they're working to establish density but the danger as you again said jackie hasn't passed they are still looking for a device some sort of package or case that the attacker may have left inside the building the bomb squad in attendance they will be looking to find that package to see if it poses any danger to the public and of course public safety at this stage

is the priority live pictures coming to you now of course. and she has seen the sheer amount of services at the scene fire service as well and of course according to eyewitness accounts it was their quick actions that prevented more people potentially being caught up in this and being killed or injured we can go to a group now show you just the panic that took place in the 1st moments after the shooting. so scenes of panic there obviously and you can hear very loud gunshots being fired over and over which is something that is of course going to show. everybody and people screaming and running so you can imagine the panic that's ensuing there now of course today also a lot of reporting the russian president held his annual end of the year question and answer session which meant there was even more presence in the center of the

city there was a record number of journalists attending that 1900 someone journalist attended that just today just a few hours before this took place and of course a lot of the putin has no doubt already been briefed on the situation and we'll be hearing from him eventually the other presidential spokesman richard pascoe fast confirm the president is aware of the situation knows what's going on and indeed he's currently in the kremlin attending an evening a concert dedicated to celebrating the work of security forces personnel which take place on the 20th of december in russia that is tomorrow but that evening is taking place to that celebration dinner is taking place in the kremlin today it was just a matter of the last couple of hours that was the putin gave a speech detailing the fortunes of tackling terrorism and extremism we can take a listen to that. speech. he's getting we need to be more active encounter looking for dreamers immigrants. compromising leadership

center of the city where there's plenty of restaurants and bars and other attractions from both locals and of course tourists as well you know what i mean we have seen tragically you and i and then as you do we've covered multiple other attacks have been across across europe and some of them they're quite similar remarks some of them are different certainly the ones in london bridge in london that the 2 we've seen over 2 years they have targeted random people random members of the public used by using violence as weapons these attackers it seems certainly had a different plan in mind very very specifically went to the halt of the russian security forces the russian military targeting the federal security service building. targeting police surrounding that we're not aware right now of any civilian casualties the have happened in the area it does seem so far that the critical injuries or deaths tragically are serving security forces personnel and

police officers and those 2 officers of course will surprise with their families who have been taken away in a critical condition as a result of this attack. obviously force as well with the bomb squad currently trying to find them to fuse that device. so exactly as you can see from the pictures there is a heavy response in the area lots of police and other emergency services there and the whole place has been completely shut down this is a live picture from the area and it's see you know they're the only people and vehicles that you see at the scene i don't know the police this is extremely unusual for that area it's just striking as you say jacki you know having you know spent a lot of time in central moscow. seeing this at this time it's just come up to 8 pm the stockhausen at 6 pm this is real this is real rush hour time and seeing these streets so dead to have so deserted is unusual artist on hawkins in the studio
