3:04 am
reaction so far well as we saw before ukrainian president a lot of years olinsky gave his condolences recently to the families of the victims of this tragic crash and we also have some reactions from government institutions in ukraine as well ukraine's embassy in iran says that they have enough information now to definitively conclude that this was not the result of a terrorist attack and the country's national security and defense council has even opened an operational headquarters to collect more information and get to the bottom of what caused these technical problems the fire on the plane and as for the ukrainian international airlines they've also decided to halt all flights from ukraine to tehran until further notice because well technical problem seems like the main and right now of course it's still early on we still have a whole investigation ahead of us but still if it indeed was a technical. the main question would be then what caused it was it a. manufacturing was it because of something went wrong you know in the
3:05 am
docks in the manufacturing docks or. did it come about as during exploitation of the of the plane so tell us what do we know about the safety record of that particular boeing 737 model well it's had a number of crashes over the past several years this plane specifically is the 737800 it's an a bit of an older model but the plane itself was only produced in 2016 so it's not that old only about 4 years and it's had its share over the past several years it's had its share of crashes over the past several years and 2016 over 60 people. were killed in a crash when that same model of plane was going from dubai to russia and it crashed in 2010 another case in india killed over 150 people again the same plane model and this isn't even the boeing 737 max which has had its own share of crashes over the
3:06 am
over the past several years it's a newer model as well and we've extensively reported on those crashes as well but this is an older different model actually and boeing has commented on the situation they've said that they're collecting more information but other than that we haven't heard much from them. i'm going to be waiting for the results of the investigation which is currently being conducted artist on quarter think you are joining us in the studio with those details. reports of the plane crash come just hours after a round fired dozens of ballistic missiles at 2 u.s. military bases in iraq iranian military is calling the move a revenge for the death of its top general custom samani was killed and a u.s. drone strike last week. got a good academic. was . now the missile strikes happened exactly the same time at the same time of
3:07 am
night as the assassination of salim money just $5.00 days earlier circuitry of iran's supreme national security council tweeted this image of the iranian flag that's an apparent reference to trump's tweet of the u.s. flag just after the drone strike that killed seoul imani. middle east correspondent paula sneer zorba lisa's details. well we've recently just heard from the iranian revolutionary guards and i must stress that it's i'm confirmed but they've issued a statement in which they say that 80 soldiers have been killed and some 200 have been injured at the one american base that was hit in the early hours of this morning now earlier we did receive confirmation from the pentagon that no american soldiers had been killed so we're hearing this figure of 80 killed but as of yet no confirmation which will bring you as soon as we get it at the same time we are hearing very very strong words coming out of iran they immediately took
3:08 am
responsibility for this morning strike saying that it was an act of revenge and warning that if the united states or any of its allies in the region respond it will it will retaliate in kind at the same time they have contacted the un secretary general saying that iran will take all proportionate measures against any threats or use of force now one of the 1st people to respond in the early hours of this morning was iran's telecommunication minister referring to the united states he said get the hell out of our region we have heard from the iranian foreign minister. with who has stressed that it is not in the interest of tehran and it is not to rand's intention is to make the situation and have a full scale war with the united. states iran 2 concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under article $51.00 a few and charter targets in base from which coordinate attack against our citizens and senior officials were launched we do not seek escalation or war but will defend
3:09 am
ourselves against any aggression now there has also just been reaction from the advisor to the iranian president who harm me and he has said that there is the threat now that there could be an all out war in the middle east and of course that's the number one concern here in the region where all countries are monitoring the situation extremely extremely closely we know for example that the philippines have evacuated ally in the process of evacuating their personnel and they citizens from iraq and at the same time other countries have urged they citizens to be in a state of high alert now as for the iranians themselves as i say strong words coming out of them anyway new revolutionary course statements saying that this attack this morning was in revenge we warned the great satan our good american regime that any further malice or mobilization will result in a more painful response. of the u.s. government which have given their bases to the terrorist army of the country are
3:10 am
warned that any territory used for hostile acts against iran will be targeted now we haven't hear ted any direct responses from other leaders in the region most notably the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has not said anything although he has been no doubt holding meetings with his defense minister enough to benefit israeli soldiers are in a state of high alert in the north in the south of the country and they have been since last friday and this is out of concern that iran might activate its proxy groups either hamas in gaza or his in iran has been. so the potential for full out war is there and we'll continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates as and when we get them the u.s. federal aviation agency has banned all u.s. flights over the persian gulf over security concerns previously trump threaten to strike 52 iranian sites if it were tell you did in any way but so far washington's response has been somewhat muted tweeting so far so good. all is well
3:11 am
missiles launched from iran a 2 military bases located in iraq assessment of casualties and damage is taking place now so far so good we have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world by far i will be making a statement to morrow morning well we have a tweet from donald trump it begins with the phrase all is well followed by a statement that there is an assessment going on of the casualties and the damage done to us bases as a result of the attack by the iranian missiles furthermore we do have the white house saying that trump has been briefed on the situation and it we have this point it's expected that down trump will speak to the media regarding the events tomorrow this is what we heard from the white house we are aware of the reports of attacks and u.s. facilities in the rock the president has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team now the response from
3:12 am
members of the u.s. congress has been quite different depending on which party they are in closely monitoring the situation phone bombings targeting u.s. troops in iraq we must ensure the safety of our service members including and needless provocations from the administration and demanding that iran sees its violence american world cannot afford war. iran is now openly calling for americans to turn on each other the time will come to debate us policy tonight's american and allied troops have come into direct attack by a nation state and americans must come together to support and protect them and respond appropriately may god protect and watch over our troops stationed in iraq my thoughts are with them and with their loft once i condemn iran's attacks which targets you ask coalition and iraqi military personnel in the strongest terms i am monitoring the situation in iraq closely and praying for our men and women in uniform the iranian regime has made
3:13 am
a great miscalculation by launching its attacks along trump supporters the decision to kill qassam solomonic is being celebrated as a heroic act an act against terrorism however among many democrats though they have not much good to say about qassam solomonic they seem to however argue that this was an unnecessary ask elation that put american lives at risk so many democratic voices seem to be speaking up and saying that donald trump could possibly be asking lading to a war with iran and didn't consult the u.s. congress on that matter so there seems to be some pretty solid divisions about how to assess the recent events between the usa and iran at this time people are waiting to hear what trump will say when he does speak to the media as the new day comes in the united states. however early a president from bad down on a threat to destroy iran's cultural sites the u.s. leader calls the global alarm with a series of tweets on saturday in which he said he rainey and learned marks could
3:14 am
be targets if the country were to seek revenge for the assassination of major general so the money but on tuesday trump said washington would obey international law. we are according to various laws supposed to be very careful with their cultural heritage and you know what if that's what the law is i like to obey the law one of the consequences of the u.s. assassination came from iraqi m.p.'s who voted on sunday to expel foreign forces from their country then war in iraq to brace itself for heavy sanctions if it kicked his troops out of the country. on tuesday the iranian parliament unanimously passed a bill class find the u.s. armed forces as a terror organization tensions in the middle east have soared since the start of 2020.
3:16 am
meanwhile these are pictures from the state funeral of the slain major general it was buried in his hometown there has been an outpouring of grief all across iran and saudi money is killing viewed as the death of a national hero whose funeral attracted vast crowds of mourners at least $56.00 people were killed after being crushed in the crowd during tuesday's funeral procession for 2 decades early money served as the commander of iran's elite codes force which is the external wing of the islamic revolutionary guard he played a crucial role in iran's military decision making process and helped expand the rums role in the middle east. now we can go to a number of breaking new. story we're covering for you this hour and that is the plane crash a passenger plane carrying some $180.00 people would crash just outside to
3:17 am
iran some 2 minutes to take off now we have. to bring us more because there have been some developments in the past few days yeah absolutely well 1st of all the plane was on route to kiev from tehran from the company to run airport where at 6 am local time 2 meant just 2 minutes after it took off the plane crashed now the amount of passengers that were on board we have some conflicting reports about that ukraine's prime minister said that there were 167 passengers on board with another 9 crew members wall we also got reports that the ministry of internal affairs of ukraine reported that there were $180.00 people total on that plane now we. we we saw pictures earlier of the you know absolutely burnt airplane that crashed and the body bags associated with this tragic event there's reports that
3:18 am
all of the reports agree that there are no survivors that's the that's the main thing is the video that we do have from the crash itself it's extremely grim and harrowing really you can see one video that we have that shows some amateur actually caught the moment where the plane was falling from the sky i think we can show that now that video and you just see in the night sky because as you mentioned this was very early in the morning you just use that small flash on the top of the screen and then hitting that area just southwest of tiran and exploding yeah as far as i understand this point the reports are saying that there is a specific reason for the failure can you tell us a little bit more about that yeah well this video what it corroborates what one of the airport representative said that a fire occurred in the engine mid-flight which eventually brought down the plane and iranian authorities had media had also been reporting constantly that this was the result of some technical problems but it seems like what the airport
3:19 am
representative said was more specific and that a fire took took place on the plane and here you can see in this video the absolute devastation and destruction that was caused by this explosion this is what this was just one of the engines i think yeah absolutely and again like like i said all 'd the reports agree that there were no survivors and and it was certainly a tragic moment but sort of official reaction do we have to this crash at this point in time we have a lot from the ukrainian government actually there have been a few from the from government institutions as well as from ukrainian united airlines from ukraine's embassy in iran and they've said that the crash they they've confirmed that the crash could not have been the result of a terrorist attack and the national security and defense council of ukraine has even opened up. an operational headquarters to get to the bottom of what caused these malfunctions and collect the details of the tragedy now the airlines ukranian international airlines has also said that they will be halting all flights to
3:20 am
tehran until further notice because of this now the reason i pointed out that particular engine in the footage is because it is one of the very few parts that are recognizable to this tragedy everything else looks just bits and pieces and it looks like almost had broken down on the edge and then the explosion on the ground just you know finish the job that will move is done already but what do we know about this of course again you've said the causes of the tragedy still to be established and. blame on anyone as of now but. as when it comes to that particular model how reliable was that particular model of the boeing because the company has found itself in the water lately because of its grip and its reputation has been mobbed by tragedies yeah the company has certainly had a lot of its planes have been crashing over the past several years but this plane specifically the model is called the 737800 the model itself is relatively older
3:21 am
but the plane that specifically crashed was was built only in 2016 so it's relatively new in itself but this model has had its share of crashes over the past few years in 2016 over 60 people were killed in a crash that occurred on a plane that was going from dubai on route to russia in 2010 another crash that occurred in india killed over $150.00 people so that's already over 200 people in just those 2 instances and this model isn't even the boeing 737 max which has had its own string of crashes over the past several years and is actually a newer model that's also led to many casualties involving those crashes as for the company itself boeing has said that they're still gathering more. from ation in connection to this recent crash in iran but other than that we have yet to hear much from them all we can do now is wait for the official investigation to get some real information on what did happen on that plane and the tragedy that happened
3:22 am
earlier this morning donna quarter thank you for bringing us that information now the ukrainian president a lot of response he has cut short a visit to oman and is heading to kiev on his telegram channel and he expressed his sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims of the plane crash he also said the ukrainian authorities were still clarifying all the details of the tragedy grieving relatives gathering international ports where flight 752 was heading people mourning the dead and waiting for any information about the disaster. we now go back to our other developing story this hour overnight iran far dozens of ballistic missile bases housing u.s. forces in iraq iranian military is calling it revenge for the death of major general qassam salmoni who was killed in a u.s.
3:23 am
airstrike last week the trump has responded to the attack saying that all is well and that he will make a further statement later today which of course we will be bringing to you cannot bring in say i'd mohammad marandi political season and politics professor at tehran university now would you say this is a proportional response are you around has said it's not seeking any escalation or war but has warned that if the us then responds itself then there could be all out war in the region. well the iranian leaders said last night was a slap in the face. the u.s. has to leave the region. i think that. iran will that this is not enough that's my understanding it was in my opinion a very humiliating strike for the americans because the u.s. military was unable to intercept even
3:24 am
a single iranian missile even though this was an air base and usually the defense systems and in their face especially in a war zone are extraordinarily good the americans obviously must have been waiting for something so it shows the vulnerability of the u.s. in iraq against the iranian strike and i think that that would mean the same is true for all u.s. bases in the region there's also been a warning warning from iran that if the united states responds militarily. all those countries in the persian gulf region u.s. military bases will be seen as hostile actors. implies that they will be attacked as well and if a country like the united arab emirates or saudi arabia where all their assets are right alongside iran's borders i think that the u.s. would not more than a day or 2. americans are standing on bury. man
3:25 am
. whether it's in the persian gulf war in iraq especially with the outrage that now exists in iraq. in light of all that you've just said especially about america's regional allies like the united arab emirates and the saudis where do you think america's relationship will go with those regional allies because de facto they are right now finding themselves in the middle of a conflict that maybe they didn't want to obviously those 2 countries have never been big fans of iran but they never would they weren't actively seeking military confrontation and now they're in the position when they could be dragged into one. well according to wiki leaks documents the former saudi king did call for the united states to attack iran and we do have information that the moratti crown prince has asked for the same and we do know that the drone the american drone that
3:26 am
the iranians downed in inside the territorial waters came from the united arab emirates and the u.a.e. and the saudis and the rain as well as others they are hosting american bases and those bases are directed towards iran so they can have their cake and eat it too they can't allow the united states to threaten iran or attack iran or harass iran and not pay the price so the iranians have given them a final warning to if an attack is carried out by the united states these countries will be seen as that they'll be dealt with as such and as i said saudi arabia the united arab emirates they cannot ask for a specially united arab emirates cannot last for long so i think people probably should be leaving the persian gulf us with me as possible because we don't know whether trump is wise enough to recognize that this is not a winnable conflict or not well when it comes to donald trump is usually so
3:27 am
bombastic and what not but after the strikes themselves he tweeted out that all is well so far so good on make a statement later today very calm very reserved which is in complete contrast to what he was threatening just a few days ago to hit out at least 50 plus the iranian sites why do you think that change in tone. well i think the very fact that these missiles pass through american defenses so easily and not as i said not a single one was brought down by the americans i think raises concerns in the united states that if the iranians wish to seriously take our american bases and their soldiers they have the capability and of course on the ground the americans are in a very precarious situation the iraqis want them out the people of iraq are
3:28 am
outraged because they've all the united states has also committed war crimes against iraqis and berthing a senior commander as well as many soldiers fighting isis and them are saudi arabia are simply not countries can fight for they are miserably weak and vulnerable the last the war against yemen this firetrucks imposing starvation on them and all their oil and gas so basically oil installations are right in front of iran. it's not a pretty stand to be in if as i said if i was in the u.a.e. i'd leave say an mohammad marandi i'm afraid we're going to have to leave it there politics professor at tehran university thank you for joining us on the program. and just a quick reminder for any of you just tuning in that iran fired dozens of ballistic missiles and bases housing u.s. forces any rock and the iranian military called it revenge for the death of major general samani and that's your news wrap up for this hour will be back in about 30 minutes thanks for tuning in.
3:29 am
so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy for them to you shouldn't let it be an arms race interviews on off and spearing dramatic development only really i'm going to resist i don't see you how's that strategy will be successful it's very critical daryn time to sit down and talk.
