3:01 pm
people are just. from our international new center here in the russian capital this is a pleasure to have your company my name's union only. the us democratic party has suffered embarrassing night in iowa the results of the 1st major vote in the 2020 primary season been delayed due to a crippling technical glitch or not expected to be announced at all until choose the evening would be a full 24 hours later donald trump was quick to comment on the turmoil at the iowa caucus taking to twitter to say on the democrats' apartment ineptitude meanwhile in the absence of any official results to all of the party's presidential hopefuls decided to claim victory. so we don't do results.
3:02 pm
by all indications we are going to new hampshire victoria. due to the failure of the iowa democratic party to release results tonight and in the interest of full transparency bernie sanders a senior advisor jeff weaver is releasing results from nearly 40 percent of precincts in i want results have been delayed so they'll be coming but they'll be coming later nevertheless this is this is a huge embarrassment for the democratic party this this is an awful start to the to the nomination process because iowa is statistically of paper it's insignificant i mean out of the 2000 almost 2000 delegates required to be nominated as the presidential candidate for the democratic party only has fought so you know it's a tiny amount the population is small it is a very representative but. it is the 1st primary it is the 1st cry it sets the tone
3:03 pm
sets the atmosphere if you win it it gives you a huge amount of momentum going forward because it's an example it's a people see that you're winning in a jump on board and for this to happen now apparently because of a technical glitch ease awful we've found inconsistences in the reports in a free says of results in addition to the tech system has been used to tabulate results where oh so using 4 to suffer results and a paper trail to validate that all results match and ensure that we have confidence and accuracy in the numbers we report fortunately no one's come out and blame the russians yet but you know did eventually down the line will there be a fall guy who will think you know i can just play in the russians and nobody's going to prove you disprove you but the point is the point of this app at the center of this at the center of this mess the point of this app was to safeguard the primary the election to safeguard. from russian meddling from foreign
3:04 pm
interference from hackers they drew tens of millions of dollars and to developing these apps and to develop the developing technology to protect themselves and what you have at the end of the day at the end of the day it all goes pear shaped the entire system is an embarrassment nothing's ready. there's also a scandal brewing on live cause a lot of people a lot of the candidates are very angry that this happened especially those that were projected to win but pete booted judge one of the one of the candidates he apparently bankrolled the funded coup funded me do nations to the developers of this application is a conspiracy theories brewing among people that don't support him saying that you know how convenient he was spared the embarrassment straightaway of coming in 3rd or 4th in this poll have because because obviously that would be awful for any candidate nevertheless this is this is an egg on their face this is this is awful
3:05 pm
for the entire democratic party this is. the worst part about it is that all the supporters of all the various candidates and now angry not only at the democrats but at each other they're blaming you know candidates they're saying you would have come in 3rd you would have come in 4th others are claiming victory with nothing to do with nothing to back it up. very ironic because this is exactly the sort of behavior that the cues to russia of committing that breaking news russian hackers try to hack wisconsin's election system russia's hacked into a lot of things russian hackers the kremlin clan it certainly looks like the begin with an eye towards openness president it's ironic isn't it that democrat paranoia about russia what caused them to develop these apps to safeguard themselves with technological files or what have you eventually that and there are. and
3:06 pm
incompetence was the downfall because russian hackers of never managed to stop an election to delay the results of the primary but an election in the united states going through that gets to have well i also spoke to richard good who's a political consultant and former advisor to the hillary clinton presidential campaign about the chaos in iowa iowa had no business being the 1st state to kind of act as some sort of sieves that candidates had to move through for 2 reasons one caucuses are entirely undemocratic unless you could take off from work and be there in person for some period of time which a lot of people cannot do. you couldn't vote secondly iowa is very white it's democratic voters are very liberal and very young and frankly most voters in most states. don't have those traits so for i mean i think there's
3:07 pm
a consensus this morning that this will probably be the last time that iowa caucuses act is the 1st in the nation donald trump is going to seize upon everything he's going to seize upon your name he's going to seize upon your gender he's going to find something where he thinks he has an edge in this case it wasn't because the world was watching america at least was watching what happened was donald trump has every reason to ridicule what happened there that's true he can say if you make all sorts of accusations about the democratic party this was the democratic party of one rather small state iowa we will get to a state next week new hampshire also a small state then we get to increasingly larger states and i think it's a judgment that people have made that for all the strengths of the economy he's not the person they want. in the white house for the next 4 years but that could change . let's take you know to france where a former spokesperson for a syringe in this group has been charged. on the arrested on charges excuse me war
3:08 pm
crimes and torture no let's go through what we know here he had lived in hungary for several months before being granted a student scholarship in march say the authorities are only tipped off after a human rights group pointed out his real identity charlotte dubin skier correspondent has been looking at the loophole that allowed us to suspected war criminal entry into the e.u. . torture kidnapping war crimes these are just some of the charges brought against the syrian he was named on a student visa he went by the name of mushed enough may in france back in syria he was is a lowish no ordinary stews and t. is said to have once been jayashri islamic press secretary previously nor did his freedom fighters the hardline islamist group in fact curried out a reign of terror in the eastern ghouta suburb of damascus.
3:09 pm
when you look at. him he's linked in profile he describes himself as being specialized in security and terrorism affairs with a focus on syria he boasts of an impressive academic background with bachelor's degrees from not one but chief diversity's including in hungary and when it comes to experience he mentions being the c.e.o. of the syrian news monitoring network may trace of the allegations of torture or forced in this moment of children raising his history seems an apt given that all islam ceased to exist back in 2018.
3:10 pm
as the battle for eastern ghouta played out the french government said it was concerned about a grave violation of human rights and it called for a cease fire now while it acknowledge the presence of just harvests it also accused president assad of using the ongoing conflict as a fig leaf to wipe out any opposition. the syrian regime and its allies are brandishing the fight against jihad his fighters the need for which no one is disputing as just a few cation of an offensive aimed at entirely different goals its real intentions
3:11 pm
are indeed to annihilate any our normal position and break the morale of civilians by indiscriminately massacring them following that offensive in eastern guta by the syrian army generational islam was talked balt last year a complaint was filed to the courts in france and josh and the senior members and no wanted as it was criminals. the complaint filed in june 29th teen was built on over 3 years of documentation of the crimes perpetrated by jaish al islam summary executions kidnappings and the systematic east of torture the group targeted people suspected of complicity with the regime but also ordinary civilians accuse of not applying the shari'a imposed by the group rigorously enough the international federation for human rights says the arrest of most enough where in march say paves the way for the 1st investigation of the rebel groups crimes others may be hoping
3:12 pm
that arrests such as this will help shed more light for crimes committed by opposition forces during the syrian conflict giving a fuller picture of what really happened on the ground. paris or political analyst nickel america which believes similar situations will continue to arise on unless the french government tackles both legal and illegal immigration at all. once you enter the european union you can go more or less where you want there are no border controls how we entered hungary would be an interesting question to know that what is. prosperous and this in this situation is that he entered legally he wasn't even hiding he was living in the wide which is a neighborhood in the center smack in the center of more state you could continue studying in france with no problem whatsoever that means the police cannot do their job properly today in western europe they don't even know who's in the country we've gotten so low as to say that we don't even we don't even know if you've got the means to stop terrorists we don't even know if terrorists are in the country we
3:13 pm
know there are some but we don't know how many and it's you know it's already difficult capturing those who are not even in hiding so i think definitely this is going to hurt a bit the government because this is very bad press very bad press having a terrorist. somebody accused of terrorism entering legally come from another country going with legal it's a university this is very bad press so there might be some who's in the following days but i think unfortunately if the government doesn't handle the process of immigration legal immigration early in the go the immigration and the secret service if the government doesn't tackle these issues seriously unfortunately these types of stories are going to continue in time. britain is rolling out the green carpet with the country's energy regulator unveiling plans to scrap gas heating and the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2035 in the hope of hitting a net 0 emission target 15 years after it but there are worries it will hit the
3:14 pm
most vulnerable in society as every house in the country is set to pay more. well this is it the moment we've all been waiting for the beginning of the end of carbon emissions as the u.k. could be on the path to net there are a monday the u.k.'s office for gas and electricity markets or presented its new action which is aimed at transforming the country's infrastructure to make it more eco friendly britain has come a long way it is decarbonise faster than any other major economy but we must go further particularly on heat and transport we are taking an approach that recognizes that our role protecting consumers includes a cheering net 0. it is now vital that the energy industry rises to the challenge and demonstrates how it will work with the government and off jam to decarbonise britain's energy system at lowest cost well it's a $9.00 point plan and if you don't drive electric car yet you may be in trouble as under the scheme 10000000 petrol diesel cars will be replaced with the green immobile and for the time being you better keep your winter jackets on because gas
3:15 pm
central heating is to be ripped from every single home well the plan also wants to shift towards renewable sources of energy like solar and wind which is great news for g.b. then with all the rain so how much will this cost that well as our demographic would put it you can't put a price on saving the globe can you and doesn't have a direct answer either to recognize the broad tradeoffs to overcome such a scale is spreading the cost of a low carbon energy system between today's and tomorrow's consumers when apparently this $9.00 point plan is all down to you so it could all go up in smoke when you hear how much it can set you back well the rollout alone of electrical vehicles could be $2000000000.00 pounds a year which is the equivalent to 30 pounds on every household bill. chandler. please use. it.
3:16 pm
if it is going to be good for the planet and if we do have to pay a bit more money then i live. in a freezing cold system so that's my. baby and it will not take the trouble. providing it's not done and i want to buy seats with people just paying money out. there so that i mean well jim could cause an uncomfortable atmosphere as it has a history of hiking prices for consumers for its own good just a few days ago the national audit office revealed that electric bills were unnecessarily high fee year is setting the public back $100000000.00. pounds annually but if it's all spread out equally for the good of the planet then right well the royals wouldn't get the warmest reception on this one when prince charles hopped on his private helicopter producing c o 2 emissions to get to climate change conferences in order for him to undertake as many engagements as he does across the u.k. and around the world he sometimes has to fly as he has often said assume is there
3:17 pm
is a more sustainable way of making these journeys he will be the 1st to use it so as to use it or a 1001 is hard to believe when buckingham palace tops the list for the most environmentally damaging buildings in london or about the time when her majesty used the state's poverty fund to heat a humble abode i don't think robin hood would approve of the time being there are many proper trial alternatives out there the flying around the thing is nearly everybody one time it is so. you can stop him too you sort of get that he's a boy and he needs to be. high security. doesn't make sense but when it comes to the climate it seems like the ordinary britain should brace themselves to be ready for the additional financial sacrifice everything is on the altar of a carbon free future. social media in sweden has little over the issue of wearing the heat up a controversy was sparked by
3:18 pm
a mobile application linked to a song competition which a large users of all 'd ages to address their on screen image with the traditional muslim head scarf for women.
3:19 pm
well women across the globe have also been polarized by world teacher day the event called on women of all faiths to cover their head for a day as a sign of solidarity but running parallel on social media or the hashtag no job day. well let's get into this a little bit for them very happy to say we have a couple of guests on the program for you rockman is a no hit job day activist and a women's rights advocate or her as well joins us live who we start with. the spike the rage the jobs popularity in the range the jobs popularity in the world it appears to be growing we've got sweden in this example one of the world's most liberal countries we've seen the top fashion magazine cover with a woman wearing one look of the year these women are wearing them from choice are
3:20 pm
they wrong. in my personal opinion i have no problem with a woman choosing to whether he jar my problem stems more from force or jobs around the world through laws such as in iran and saudi arabia as well as within our community is throughout the world many many girls are forced into wearing the job. without any. usually from a very very young age without any full understanding of what it represents and how difficult it will be to take it off. when we're talking about this story in sweden it's quite eyeopening some of the details the creators of the mobile application they offered a job of a tour for girls aged 3 could play without as they wished do you think that was ok . well they absolutely developers are merely reflecting the culture that's taking place in their community what we now know is that
3:21 pm
a lot of people have immigrated to sweden and they are practicing the muslim faith and they do you require that their children wear these 2 jobs is the youngest 3 we've seen where school teachers in sweden have been told that they have to make sure by the parents that they have to ensure that their children don't take off their head job even if they want to play at the age of 3 where been told that there have been other cases where some principals have said no one's allowed to or had jobs in their school so there's definitely a community where this is a very real and present appearing you know issue and concern and so we have to just allow the app designers to kind of. basically play to their audience if you will. very is there an issue with the bombing the concept of bombing them you know if somebody is being forced to wear them of course that needs to be addressed but if
3:22 pm
you're if you're rolling out a total of not make it an issue of women's rights come purred to people being affected in a community which needs to be sorted out. so before i answer that question i do want to address something reese. i do understand from the point of view of the developers they do need to cater to and audience you are correct however i do find a huge problem in perpetuating this idea that children as young as 3 need to win the job in. he in any form and i would also like to say that he job is not a culture it is very much a religious symbol and the job throughout the years has erased several cultures around the world it is a race the somali culture it is a race the culture that i come from the been goalie culture it is a race so many different cultures where women could wear whatever they wanted or what was culturally acceptable if that's what we're going to call it and has
3:23 pm
replaced it with the job but to answer the question. if we're to talk about whether or not the huge jump should be banned i'm firmly on the side of the who job shouldn't be banned as someone who grew up in a fundamentalist household or someone who was a fundamentalist. i can say for certain that if the he job was banned in this country in the u.k. i would not have left my home and i think that that is certainly more toxic than a full ban on the job i think that women should be able to choose what they wear and that is exactly why i am an advocate for no job day because i stand for the choice to take it off which is something that is just not extended to people around the world and people within even my own community here and in the u.k. . i'm reese the point isn't it that thought but people in the western world you know. there's the issue of of sisterhood business looking out for people in perhaps
3:24 pm
more oppressed societies just to give you an example we saw some muslim women. last month a female chessmaster in iran removed her job during a tournament i was promptly removed from the team for saying it quote creates many limitations for women on the prize them all there be a sick writes you just your thoughts and something i thought if you're going to start a movement surely this should be supported in more liberal societies too. so so here's where we stand as women in the west we believe that representation matters so when you see when i myself see a little brown skinned girl on a t.v. commercial as a little girl i believe i can grow up to be that person or when i see serena williams playing tennis or something to that effect it shows me that i too am represented in the world around me so what we don't want to do is not show women and had jobs because we don't want you little girls who wear jobs to feel as though they can't be a part of this larger story that we all are
3:25 pm
a part of right and then at the same time there is a more insidious history and maybe a more negative connotation about the idea that if a woman removes her job that she can be jailed or you know even punished severely by her own family or by the government jailed for 30 years she could be murdered and so or you know acid having acid thrown in her face so these things though they are like you said faith religious connotation religious expectations of that are placed on these women they come with very real and insidious and very unfortunate requirements and it's a nuance that we want to balance we want to allow women who are a part of this religion to feel as though they are part of the larger fabric in this larger blanket that we all we've together to be a part of but at the same time we have to acknowledge the realistic history that stay. behind and within the very real present history realities that face women who
3:26 pm
are in these part of these religions so it's it's very nuance we want these young women who are in the tennis in the tennis tournament who take them off and say this is oppressive we want their voice to be heard right. is there an issue of what do you say when you hear the argument about the burka is an individual commitment to modesty for the vast majority of women and it's not oppressive or it doesn't oppress them in any way. so i just want to say thank you to respond bringing up those points because i do agree and i'm very very grateful that you brought that up i do feel as though only one narrative is shown in the west when we talk about the job it's often a very positive narrative but i think that the other side also has to be addressed we have protests in iran going on which are just not highlighted by western mainstream media. but when we talk about the job or the boer car or the new car whichever thing you would refer to they have several names at this point. if we are
3:27 pm
to say that it is oppressive or that it's described as not oppressive because it's an individual choice i think that that statement has to be looked into much deeper i think that many of us girls who are brought up in muslim households into an islamic faith. we are indoctrinated into wearing this and we are told why we wear it from a very very young age without being able to fully understand all the implications behind it when i was a little girl and even now people tell me that the reason that they were his job is for modesty and you know he job helps prevent men from being 60 sexually explicit expletive and things like that. which i don't fully agree with i think that if we are to come. you know this sexual behavior in men it should be
3:28 pm
something that men are educated in and it shouldn't be the onus on the woman to poke a. ok i just want to bring up 0.2 to research about the story that we're talking about in sweden do you think. it's a case of what's going on there cultural appropriation by people in the west without actually understanding the symbolism and some of what. we've been going through today about some of the the issues surrounding it like we're speaking about that example in iran for example. so here's the here's my here's my view i believe that sometimes appropriation is a very real thing and in this instance i don't believe it is i believe that people like elle magazine and different countries are looking to celebrate the individual differences that many women face if you look at different brands of makeup they're having they're using where they're selling many more shades of skin to represent to
3:29 pm
make sure everyone has a shade for themselves that matches who they are and i think right now what the media what magazines and you know the beauty standards are trying to do is just be more inclusive and say there is a spot for you here and so with that we don't know all the times why some of the things that are represented in our cultures are or hit our religions they exist so what we're now realizing is ok while we're trying to support and be inclusive there are some issues with the the historical in the current realities that are attached to these jobs and the women being covered and so if we accept the question you know if a if we in a in a world where there were no me in this hyper unrealistic world where there are no min would anyone need to wear her job well no the answer is no because women are taught to wear her job so that they don't entice or encourage men to be aggressive ok ok so what we have to do is realize there's
3:30 pm
a connection there ok frey we have about 20 seconds left if you want to just offer your final thoughts. so we have about 20 seconds left if you'd just like to offer your final thoughts. a minute final school. on the he job i'm not entirely sure which swedish this is in reference to i don't think that there's any cultural representation going on appropriation sorry i think they are just trying to represent the community but i do think that the job does have a lot of negative connotations attached to it that just aren't being addressed and i hope people will start to address them and start freely talking about them without any fear of harassment of any sort. for a rock man i know a job and reset every cent of women's rights advocates like you very much for coming and sharing your thoughts today. ok just a reminder for all to the minute news and views artie's twitter page a certain worth a stop follow us now if you are not.
