syria defend this military campaign against terrorist groups that an emergency session of the un security council of the western powers calls but a truce in italy. the chance of the us democratic national committee calls for the heavily delayed results in iowa to be reassessed concern regularities. a key regional prime minister stepped down in germany right up to being elected that summit a huge pull out over a year between the german chancellor's policy and the rightwing alternative for germany.
6:01 pm
a very well welcome to you you're watching r.t. international with me. and our top story this hour a fiery debate has taken place at the u.n. headquarters in new york over the conflict in syria the damascus envoy addressed the emergency session accusing turkey and other countries of occupying and pillaging syria and supporting terrorist groups or we can now cross like 2 artes caleb moore who is in new york for as i cared about what was said at the session well quite an intense disagreement among countries represented at the u.n. security council when it comes to the situation in syria's province of lip now quite harsh words were given by the representative of the united states who was very accusatory in her language when speaking on behalf of the trumpet ministration regarding syria and russia. the trumpet ministration condemns in the strongest possible terms the assad regime iran hezbollah and russia's barbaric an unjustified
6:02 pm
military offensive to be quite clear what we are witnessing is deliberate lethal violence against thousands of innocent children women and men. and now when russia spoke to the 15 member body russia emphasize the fact that it seems like these meetings are happening almost timed in a way to undermine the syrian government's efforts to defeat the terrorist forces the russian representative spoke very critically of how this meeting was planned and how this meeting this emergency meeting of the security council was convened so quickly and why take a listen these unplanned meets in syria follow a common pattern convene precisely when terrorist groups in the country are under threat and the syrian government is regaining control of its own territory i would
6:03 pm
like to remind you that these groups are recognized as terrorists by the security council syria has a right and it duty to come by terrorists on its sovereign territory. now the terrorist group that controls the syrians province of the syrian province of it live is known as he at al shabab and that group has been widely understood to be a terrorist organization around the world has committed atrocities killing civilians targeting civilian infrastructure seizing hospitals and doing other things the russian foreign ministry has pointed out however that it seems that some of the statements from the united states almost seem to indicate that u.s. officials consider to somehow be some kind of moderate opposition group or somehow an acceptable group and don't seem to recognize that as a terrorist group furthermore when the syrian representative attempted to speak to the meeting at one point the syrian representative was interrupted by the security
6:04 pm
council president at that point we heard the russian representative step in and assert that the syrian representative had the right to speak emphasizing that the the place in question the entire purpose of the meeting was to discuss it live which is a part of the syrian arab republic it is part of syria's territory and so at that point the syrian representative was able to continue his remarks so quite intense disagreements but the syrian representative when speaking emphasized that their territorial integrity was being very very widely violated and emphasized that they were determined to defeat the terrorist forces and that it seemed like the united states and nato were essentially trying to undermine their efforts and prevent them from defeating these terrorist forces and retaking their province of lives so quite a strong disagreement between countries represented at the u.n. security council meeting that just took place here in manhattan. ok caleb thank you
6:05 pm
for breaking that down for us that artie's more pain well let's discuss this further now let's cross live to eric sperling executive director of just foreign policy thank you for joining us on the program now the u.s. is calling on russia to stop targeting rebel groups almost washington is protecting the last remaining extremist militants why do they have such different perspectives on who are terrorists and who are not. thanks for thanks for having me well i think many r.t. viewers probably are familiar with the long history of geo political struggles between the united states and former soviet you know now russia and i think this is unfortunate just another chapter in that story where. you know of course back in seventy's and eighty's we had the united states that saw no issues or was happy to provide support to groups in afghanistan were fighting the soviet union that of course had very islamised points of view and the united states was happy to arm
6:06 pm
those groups and support those groups in fact recently i recently remember that in the rambo movie rambo 3 in 1908 was said dedicated to the brave dean of afghanistan to give us a sense of how culturally much that widespread that was culturally united states is interesting i mean even brett mcgurk who was formerly a top advisor u.s. envoy to the fight against eisel in syria has said that it lead province was the largest al qaeda safe haven since $911.00 so a number of instances they recognize that it is haven for terrorists of course he was hiding out there but then i think in their quest to damage their continue to destabilize syria and their allies iran and their allies in lebanon and iraq they are taking this position for geopolitical reasons. and during
6:07 pm
this session held today the syrian envoy repeatedly accused in the us of occupying and pillaging parts of syria and trying to seize its results since i think both a fat accusation. i'm sorry that who is trying to seize the resources. as the syrian envoy accuse turkey and the us of occupy and pillaging pulse of syria and trying to seize its results is to be asked for having stated that that's been the stated policy of the president out states donald trump has repeatedly and besides that one of the reasons that we are in syria is to protect the oil control of the oil president trump was actually criticized over that position by his friends on fox news so and also by progressives in congress including tossing jabbered and many others so i think there is there is reason to be concerned about that given that the president states
6:08 pm
as repeal the stated that as the us goal there. without the russian envoy he was saying that syria has every right to defend its own territory from terrorists how can the u.s. and other western countries object to that i think there is somewhat of a double standard given that the united states has prosecuted a global war on terror that has led to drone strikes in dozens of countries but i think it is and given that when the united states united states actually pursue a very similar policy in in syria when they were fighting isis leading to mass casualties horrible civilian deaths so it is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black and there where both sides are using fairly indiscriminate bombing to deal with both syria and the united states and use indiscriminate bombing to deal with terrorist control over huge and inside syria and in the u.s. case the world. thanks for joining us on the program eric spotting executive
6:09 pm
director of just foreign policy thanks again. a child the u.s. democratic national committee has called for a reassessment of the delayed results from the iowa caucus that's off the doubts were raised whether they were factually correct as our month has the report. iowa caucus the democratic caucus still missing a whopping 3 percent of the results the race is very very close extremely close booted judges in the lead with 26.2 percent and bernie sanders right behind with only 26 point one percent then we have warren with 18.2 percent and of course joe biden with 15.8 percent but a judge and sanders do have each 11 delegates basically whoever gets the 1st prime amount of delegates and reaches the $1191.00 before the primaries gets the election but it's clearly too close to call even with 3 percent still missing but in the
6:10 pm
last hour like you mentioned d.n.c. chairman took to twitter to announce this we canvass enough is enough in light of the problems that have emerged in the implementation of the delegate selection plan and in order to assure public confidence in the results i am calling on the iowa democratic party to immediately begin a re canvas so for us a tweet really came unexpected for the democrats who have already seen a lot of how they go it came as a surprise to them so what this recant this means is it's similar to recount but not quite we may be seeing another caucus of sorts to go back and seeing a recount of sorts rather to see who will win it all been caused by this error called from the application called shadow the error in coding that could not delay that these are important results and it's also important to note that this these are these primaries the caucus in iowa the new next one in new hampshire and then south carolina and nevada they really are important to kind of give these
6:11 pm
candidates the 1st momentum in this race but without the iowa results they could be moving to the now new hampshire were only days away from that. well the 100 precincts reporting consistencies in their results along with missing data are inaccurate calculations also took place the fairly to validate the results correctly and on time has caused widespread anger for weeks i don't know what is going on with the iowa democratic party and the slow trickle of results how many of the counties are having their results falsely reported by the i.d.p. every county needs to release the results now are human and labor rights lawyer dunk a valid believes the whole mess with the iowa caucus was no accident the truth is that the damage has already been done i mean i was a small state it doesn't end that many delegates what i were present is the chance for the front runner who appears to be bernie sanders to be able to come in and
6:12 pm
have a strong showing and to gloat and say look on the front runner and win this thing and that's been taken away from bernie sanders by what has happened in iowa who clearly are not going to use this a out the shadow out. in other primaries but i fear there is going to be more trouble i mean a lot of us believe this is not accidental the powers that be at the democratic party do not want bernie to be their candidate they appear to be willing to burn the law house down and to lose to trump rather than have a fairly moderate social democrat earth be their candidate and so i think you will see more problems. twitter and you tube have announced changes to the way they fight doctored materials but the vague wording in the new rules is raising questions donald quarter has long. we all like a good many i know i do and that's why i'm here to warn you that they're
6:13 pm
potentially in danger because of twitter's new war on altered images and videos that might mislead voters we know that some tweets include many plated photos or videos that can cost people harm today we're introducing a new rule and a label that will address and give people more context around this tweets one man's satire is another man's trigger there's bound to be those who will find hilarious songs like this one unhealthy for political discourse rather coldly. and actually. what has boiled its definition of so-called dr damages down to a few criteria editing of the contents composition changes in its visual or auditory information and anything that simulates real people but who actually gets to make the call on what does or doesn't harm is anyone's guess are these trump dog
6:14 pm
and rocky memes politically misleading maybe this one with bernie sanders is harmful a political satire well it's always bound to hurt someone's feelings but if you're not on twitter don't think this isn't going to step on your toes you tube's got its own version of this new policy of the 2020 lection season kicks into high gear in the united states people who visit you tube to learn about the candidates and watch the election season. over the last few years we've increased or if it's to make you tube. and information as well as an open platform for who flee political discourse remember that video trumps supporters made portraying their president massacring the mainstream media and the church it was funny to them to the mainstream media while they were a bit offended the white house correspondents association says it is horrified by this and is calling on president trump to denounce the video c.b.s. has decided. not to show that video we can't show this video because it's so
6:15 pm
disgusting is extremely violent it is disturbing and those bad liberating videos could also be interpreted as politically misleading you probably in this day think a bug with my ear. we need new babies out there think we need time to make new ones because the old ones just become so big twitter's netizens have already picked up on the controversy cause people harm were kind of instances this i love how you used the word doctored because that's the elite soccer means the left caught me on twitter oh yeah well now no one can make your bed in the which may cause harm to the left we can read between the lines there would be no unimproved in the people's republic of twitter coverage it seems that without any ultimate authority to make the call on what is and isn't a violation so many decisions will be left to the rules vague wording who knows how internet freedom will fare as a result of problems american corruption activist and founder of project veritas
6:16 pm
james o'keefe had his account suspended by twitter earlier this week and he was wrongly accused of leaking private data belonging to a volunteer on bernie sanders camp a dispute began when a washington post reporter accused project veritas of publishing secret recordings of volunteers on sundays campaign rather than stuff as james o'keefe then wrote a tweet requesting of attraction and providing a link to a publicly available election information as proof proof the volunteer was actually an employee keeps the count was then locked by twitter and although the reports say retracted his story o'keefe the count was still restricted here are those that stick with recordings of bernie sanders staffers that kicked all of this off. there were. cities. it was.
6:17 pm
still be in the. east. so. it's in his tweet james o'keefe linked to a page on the publicly available federal election committee website commissioned website when his account was then locked by twits he logged in to find a warning that is posted violates his rules unquote posting private information james o'keefe told us more about what happened. we reported publicly available f.e.c. documents in a washington post reporter say that the man you just saw the tape there collier it was a quote volunteer so the washington post reported deleted his erroneous tweet we reported the information showing that he was not a volunteer he was a he field organizer for bernie sanders in the state of iowa and then twitter locks my account and does not allow me to tweet it until they tell me i have to delete
6:18 pm
the tweet reporting the f.e.c. information i don't want to delete the tweet i think that that would be unethical for me to delete information like that i'm trying to report information the public has a right to know so i think twitter is drawing a line in the sand here and i'm not going to delete this tweet i've appealed the decision trying to get twitter to change their mind but it was making the argument that because the f.e.c. paystub had the information about the address of kyle yuruk that's a violation of his privacy but when you're a public figure when you're when you're talking about how great violence is and killing police officers are i think that reporters have a right to publish things like f.e.c. paystub so i think it's very hypocritical for. so when kay regional prime minister steps down rice also being elected will bring you more details on not a short break.
6:19 pm
i walked through the streets of moscow now blood 100 people i was down would have the changes of the blood that they don't have to keep because in order for them to have the timi they need the d.n.a. changes they also need an environment that's receptive and one of the biggest areas of growth medicine in the future is be targeting. changing so the cancer doesn't want to. what politicians do something to. put themselves on the line they get accepted or rejected. so when you want to be president and she. wanted. to be like to be close this is what the $43.00 of the more people. interested always in the waters of. the city may.

want to major shake up in german politics became regional prime minister has quit just i was off to taking up the post and made a huge backlash to have a political union that brought him to power. it's just resignation was inevitable the dissolution of the parliament is inevitable if detroit yesterday with a perilous trick of damage democracy there was no cooperation with the f.t. there is no such cooperation and will never be told us carrick they're quick to say that he had nothing to do with a deal with alternative for germany but well how long he sticks around at the
6:21 pm
higher levels of the free democratic party would that may be measured in hours similar to his reign as prime minister of the state of to ensure he's fairly much in the firing line at the moment and has been a huge backlash to this situation it's unfolded into india backlash from politicians also from the public as well it follows this union basically this alliance between the c.d.u. which is angular merkel's party on the right wing alternative for germany party the f.d.a. to support and back thomas kennedy to be the prime minister of the state of to even get that resulted in condemnation condemnation from on high angle of merkel herself having something to say about it and this is unforgivable and that's why the result must be reversed the election of this prime minister was a unique process that broke with the basic conviction of the c.d.u.
6:22 pm
and also of mine namely that no majorities should be won with the help of the f.t. this is a ban today for democracy. chancellor merkel have to say something because she often repeated that promise that there would be no alliance between alternative for germany and her present democratic union it's really seen as the big to boo in german politics to have anything to do with a half day to try and gears them to gain power in fact we saw large demonstrations across germany on wednesday evening against what we've seen happening today nya.
6:23 pm
is one of the smallest states in the german federal republic but the rock that's been thrown in there and not pool has certainly cast ripples far afield christian linda who's the head of the free democratic party that thomas kennedy belongs to least for now in fact he's called for votes of confidence while speaking to the party leadership when it comes to the cd themselves local representatives in the states of today just saying they don't want to see new elections in the state it does look like that's the direction we're heading in at the moment when you look at that it's hard to think that would have been possible just a short while ago while angle a miracle was hades of the christian democratic union that there would be
6:24 pm
a local faction of the policy that would be so publicly. moving against what head office is saying. there will be a meeting of christian democratic union top brass here in berlin on friday as they continue to discuss the fallout from what's going on in the states elections well we've got reaction to the story from both sides of germany's political spectrum. parliament voted with this majority for this liberal and it is clear that our deputies from f.t. also supported this liberal candidate but it's completely constitutional completely democrat democratic political left wing a leader a centrist a leader bolen 'd is not a willing to accept that in a federal state the parliament elects a liberal to be prime minister because they say he has the support of the wrong after all party if he in 2 renier has to 2nd largest force and the people voted for

them it chose and which states democracy in germany as an hour after government of i get our merkel to lead a. regional federal government and you left it through fascist this is. a group of a child who is it's not a question of legal it's a quest question of politics in this year. of course in the professional political. system on the federal level you are professional you move all and you think forward ritchson are you. and if you know better now you can happen the. kind of trick tries to bring in. government to legitimated that it's all just politics you should do anything to him to. have 130 german public figures have signed an appeal for the release of wiki leaks founder

exposure to arbitrariness and abuse may soon end up costing him his life hopefully the judge will decide in a thoughtless favor and and turn extradition down on the on the grounds that the u.s. is not an honorable partner in these proceedings i think it's clear that a staunch cannot be will not be given a fair trial fair treatment and the british government should take that into account the prosecution of astonish is obviously would be a major blow to to press freedom throughout the world he's been put in a and solitary confinement until very recently in a maximum security prison and it's obviously having a very damaging effect in terms of as his physical and mental health so it's been it's been extremely harsh treatment. and and certainly belies britain's reputation as a as a place of civil liberties and civilized treatment of people like that. well thank
