the latest on the story is going to our t.v. dot com stay with us now though for the big picture this is our. this week show you have had to happen there is now a coronavirus scam going around and that's happening while the wise guys have come up with a new way to steal your income tax a return stay tuned for a scam alert but 1st what if the embattled president trump. the dog is pentagon brass prepared to say no sir and why is the u.s. a suicide rate especially among young people i'm holland cook in washington this is the big picture on r.t. america.
10:02 pm
what in the world is going on at home and abroad the questions outnumber the answers is the usa prepared for what happens next let's ask our tea contributor and longtime pentagon oficial michael maloof welcome thank you following is acquittal the president wasted no time in the 1st victim of his revenge call was a decorated colonel alexander vin men who was frog walked out of his national security post in the white house after his damning impeachment testimony in trumpet suggested that then men could fleece disciplinary action michael the military culture is steeped in saluting the boss how does stuff like this play with men and women in uniform but generally they're fairly conservative and they're going to follow the. commander in chief's orders to a point if it looks like it's an unlawful one then you may have some drop outs and you may have some that are. some may go along but i mean take the example of
10:03 pm
secretary mabus who is the general. at one time i really decorated but he disagreed with the president's policy on syria whether that was a policy issue it had nothing to do with it legalities as such but if the soldiers are told that they they only obey lawful orders and now when you had them in come he claimed that it was an unlawful order that the president gave to the president of ukraine well when you listen to the tape it doesn't sound like an order but as a military man he interpreted that any request is an order inferred as an order it's inferred as an order in his mind now he did other things too he went off the reservation started talking to other people look at this this is a problem and i'm sure that when he gets back that's going to he's going to be.
10:04 pm
bubbly isolated back in the pentagon sitting in a phone booth said in a phone maybe without even a phone without it maybe maybe so but well and it did give it'll give him time to contemplate the offer that was made by the president as minister of defense while he's writing his book while the next act in trump's revenge tour tough talk about reducing the sentence pending for his operative roger stone who were jury convicted on 7 counts and congratulations to a czerny general bill barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not even have been brought the president tweets claiming he had not directed the attorney general to do so so the prez is sending these signals again do we you think and i don't want to drag into the roger stone thing but let me draw an analogy during the final dark days of watergate and we heard
10:05 pm
tales of president nixon drinking heavily wandering the halls of the white house late at night talking to the portraits of his predecessors and there were whispers back then that pentagon brass had an unspoken agreement that if he said push the button they were prepared to say no sir can you imagine such a shadow protocol these days in the white house with trump flailing yes i can i think there is a a a a concerted there is a deep concern that he may do that proverbial. tail wagging the dog so to offset all the criticism but there is so much animosity right now in the congress are going to call him on every step as we've seen and he's going to be stymied somewhat in going forward with a lot of things now that the question over bar is interfering quote unquote into the into the stone. think again what's illegal has to be illegal and that's not
10:06 pm
relevant or approaches. it doesn't it doesn't show up right now right while all of this recent political intrigue comes as geo political challenges mount and enough brush fires are burning around the world that the news media and consumers are challenged to keep up with it in your view what are the handful of hot spots that we should be watching and does all this domestic noise jeopardize our readiness it does it takes our eye off the ball if you will if you will and there are there are many separate emerging trouble spots that are occurring but they all seem to be interconnected somehow you take the philippines with. a dump in the agreement we have with the with the with them on troop movements and what have you and maneuvers . the philippines is shifting over to china because of the bill rhoden issue the
10:07 pm
jury they were just signed on to they just got a $25000000000.00 deal from the chinese in addition the philippines is now figuring more into the maritime new silk road which is part of the over the umbrella belt and road initiative that china is pushing an economy that will end run uncle sam's greenback as the standard well yeah it could and that's what we're seeing we've seen we've seen the whole turkey syria russia episode blow 'd up we've seen qatar and emerging once again as another problem with the with saudi arabia and the u.a.e. turkey has a base in qatar a common theme russia it keeps saying turkey i keep saying turkey that is that common threat along with iran they they seem to be the bad guys in all this however they're also tied into the belt road initiative which russia. china also.
10:08 pm
want to be mediators and but they're all part of a group so you have russia china turkey iran and now india coming in because of a north south transportation corridor so all of these while these are all separate things they they do represent a. pattern of behavior that's heading toward a common goal and that is and the development of an alternative world order and economy doe raimi thank you former pentagon oficial n r t contributor michael maloof accounting for inflation wages are up 33 percent over 20 years ago and unemployment is at a 15 year low home values have fewer homeowners under water and many are saving much after low interest reef eyes and we're living longer for the 1st time in 4 years life expectancy is up cancer and heart disease are down attention to
10:09 pm
the opioid epidemic seems to be helping with drug down and infant mortality is lower among top 10 causes of death only 2 are up influenza slash no monee. and suicide you can get a flu shot at the drug store maybe for free but how do we cure suicide let's ask the author of among other books the power of off the mindful way to stay same in a virtual world psycho therapist nancy kali or welcome back to the big picture. thanks for having me as nancy and i chat we're going to show you a phone number at the bottom of the screen this is for the national suicide prevention hotline and if you're listening to this show as a pod cast the number is 802738255 nancy i was struck by an american psychological association report on what
10:10 pm
americans say causes significant stress 7 in 10 say mass shootings and health care roughly 2 thirds are stressed out by work 6 in 10 are bombed out by the current political climate money or terrorism and more than half of us fred the actual climate changing or the 2020 presidential election nancy does this track what you're hearing in your work it does it's spot on. i recently read a piece saying how do we be well when the world is on fire and i don't just mean australia i mean we are living at a time and i hear about it all day in my office as a therapist or people are really frightened it's it's a term used far too often but there is an existential terror right now about whether we will survive. and i hear this from people who are not by
10:11 pm
nature anxious people are anxious about whether or not we're going to be able to go outside during the day or will it be too hot they're terrified to send their kids to concerts because there might be a shooting there they're terrified of what's going to happen in this election will there be and so on and so on they're frightened about even though the economy is looking good there they don't trust it so it is a time like perhaps other times i've only been alive in this time but like no other certainly in my lifetime and no other that i have experienced as a therapist where anxiety is the basic state and not just for the anxious but for everyone and it's real what we're facing is not in our
10:12 pm
minds it's it's a reality nancy over 48000 americans took their lives and 28 pm the most recent numbers we've seen from the centers for disease control and so 35 percent since 1999 and for ages 10 to 24 it went up 56 percent from 2007 to 27 team why so much higher for young people. well 1st of all i have to say out loud that is unacceptable that isn't on acceptable number why is suicide the 2nd leading cause of death for young people after accidents how is that possible in our country that that for me is is a point of outrage. why it's happening is a complicated question some people talk about you know the digital world some people talk about drugs and alcohol antidepressants so on and so on but
10:13 pm
when we live in a culture that is such as it is as you were just talking about with that list of frightening things. we know that it creates despair that's why we call suicide deaths of despair so there is economic instability there is x. a stench old instability there is a level of fear that we're living with and when children are living with parents that feel this way they feel this way and you couple that with the loss of community in so many places and it's not surprising that the rate of rural suicide is twice that of the urban suicide rate which tells me that in the absence of community and in the places where guns are more available in the places where
10:14 pm
there is more economic instability you're you see that much more suicides so. there is this terror that we're living with but. there is also the bigger problem which is the way we manage mental health in this in in this country . one of the most shocking statistics to me holland is that we are the only country that i know of and i could miss one or here one here or there but that the rates are going up. yeah nancy these shocking numbers make the case for you i appreciate your time thank you again author and psycho therapist nancy call your comment up have you got your income tax refund yet but somebody else already got it there's a new scam going around and steve wiseman will tell you how to avoid getting a ripped off next this is the big picture on our t. america.
10:15 pm
next kaiser's line it looks like they save money to develop. a plan to take it easy this is a central plank support diet problem is kind of common right now so you stop to. you know be. kind of quick intentions were to go to a christening to maybe even 40 years ago simply evaporated to sit on a pleasurable. when
10:16 pm
the phone rings don't answer it's probably a robot americans received 4 and a half 1000000000 robo calls last month alone and that local looking number and caller id is probably a fair. and if it is a human but not someone your phone identifies as a friend or associate it's probably a scam artist and as our next guest always reminds there's a reason they call them artists one of the latest rip offs you want to avoid let's ask the author of a stack of books and if you can read only one make it identity theft alert 10 rules you must follow to protect yourself from america's number one crime attorney
10:17 pm
bentley university professor and ace scam buster stephen jay jay wiseman steve add the app and there are now coronavirus scams you know it's amazing holland what ever the public is interested in or in the news is something that scammers will capitalize so there are a number of very very interesting coronavirus scams that are taking advantage of people now one of the the big ones that the securities and exchange commission has been warning people about is you get a e-mail or a text message alerting you to some company's stock that is going to sell or because they've got the latest there are puting cure for the coronavirus so what this is is it's actually an old scam called pump and dump the bad guys have bought stock in these real companies but they're penny stocks small capitalizations they
10:18 pm
get people to buy them just relying on someone telling them that this is a great deal shoots the price up the scammers sell their stock the price plummets and suddenly all of victims there with bigger problems than the coronavirus another $1.00 though coronavirus related is you'll get an e-mail and this one preys upon all of us it's got the latest information about what you can do to prevent being infected by the corona virus all you have to do is click on this link download this attachment of course what comes with that is malware the. will either steal your information and make you a victim of identity theft or hit you with a ransom where we have to pay a ransom to get your data back this is exactly why i have bookmarked scam aside dot com and i urge you to as well and here's why it's income tax time and the government accounting office reported that the internal revenue service paid out $1600000000.00 to identity thieves steve your scam of the day reported
10:19 pm
that phony callers purporting to be from the i.r.s. have been the number one phone scam for the past 5 years run the script for us yeah this is kind of interesting what happens is you get a call and your caller id says i.r.s. on it so people may think it's legitimate but it's very very simple for anyone to what they call spoof a call you can make your call look like it's coming from a different number so it is someone from the i.r.s. off it is coming from the scammer and they're telling you that there's been a real problem with your tax return and unless you pay them immediately over the phone that you are going to go to jail and all kinds of terrible things will happen to you the nice easy way to know if it's a real call from the i.r.s. is not just ok the i.r.s. isn't going to threaten you in that manner but frankly the i.r.s.
10:20 pm
is never ever going to initiate contact with you by a phone message by a text message or any e-mail when you're getting audited uncle sam breaks the news to you by snail mail correct oh yeah says bad fact i've received one of those snail mail so that's how we had our contact well another that's making the rounds now is the free cruise scam how does that work. you know this goes back to it you were talking before about the robo calls the latest it and robo calls are a huge huge problem around the world where it actually not even the leading country when it comes to robo calls so you get a robo call you are really lucky you've just won a free cruise apparently you won it in some kind of lottery or contest that you never entered which certainly might be difficult they then use what you say you're willing to go along with it so you click to go to an operator and that operator starts upping the price on your free cruise well you need this you need that extra
10:21 pm
you need a credit card the bottom line is in a good way to find out that this is a scam and identify the scam is the fact that commercial retail robo calls are illegal i was encouraged to read how companies including a t. and t. and verizon and samsung and t. mobile and apps like robo killer and no mole robo can help us block robo calls and steve gives you links that are safe to click when you hit scam aside dot com and read his february 2 scam of the day steve when i read about shaken stir i of course thought bond james bond but in this case shake and stir is north acronym right for a technology that the federal communications commission recently rolled out how's that work yeah it's it's really very very very helpful it's not a panacea but it's a big step in the right direction and this is
10:22 pm
a type of software that all of the phone carriers are actually mandated now to add on to their services and it won't block the call but it will indicate to you it will recognize many of the robo calls and it will indicate that it's a scam so you can just terminate the call the other services you mention in there are a lot of them and i'm glad you mentioned going to scam aside to find it not just because it helps k. . but because there are a lot of phony ones out there phony phones and so what you do here is you can sign up some of these services have a fee others are free but there are a lot of them that will help block calls but remember none of them are perfect these scam artists there is a reason they're called artists and they're some of them are technological geniuses so every time we come up with some kind of a defense they come up with a new kind of often so these robo calls its services are really good and shake and stir is among the best but you still can't be sure when everyone gets through if
10:23 pm
it's a legitimate call or not well since it began back in 2003 that national do not call list has over a quarter 1000000 phone numbers that telemarketers are prohibited by law from calling but if i understand the deal correctly charities may call those registered for the do not call list or the wiseguys misusing met charity exception oh yeah and you know holland there are actually 2 major exception charities are one and political candidates are the other and so this year of course you're getting a lot of scam calls from supposedly candidates asking you to contribute and as far as charities go once again they're exempt from the do not call list so you legitimately can get a call from a real charity however there is absolutely no way of knowing when you get that call if it is real or not so what i suggest to people is when you get the call if you take it from the charity and if you do decide to listen and think maybe this is
10:24 pm
something i would like to contribute to you say thank you very much you hang up and you go to a site called charity navigator dot org this site will tell you a couple of things it will tell you 1st of all if that's a legitimate charity it'll also tell you how much if it's a legitimate charity of the money that you give to them goes to the charitable purposes and how much goes to their salaries it allows. so tell you where to contribute so you never even though it's an exception to the do not call list you don't give money over the phone to someone who has called you steve your book which we showed earlier in this segment identity theft alert outlines 10 rules you must follow to protect yourself from america's number one crime it's a great read so i want to ask you to spill all 10 but give us 5 fundamental tips yeah and you know these are the big ones if you follow these you're going to be in good shape and one of them is of course passwords you have to have
10:25 pm
a unique password for each and every of your accounts and the reason for this is there are a lot of data breaches where your passwords become stolen by the bad guys so if it's your password from amazon that's one thing but if that's the same password you using for your bank you're in trouble so you can take something so you can remember this take a phrase i don't like passwords capital letters small letters an apostrophe add a couple of actually mation points that's a good base and then add a few letters at the end like for your amazon it could be i don't like passwords to exclamation points a.m.a. and that way you can tailor a unique password for each and every one of your accounts but you'll also have security questions you have very very common security questions and unfortunately many of these security questions which will allow someone to change your password many of these are things that these scammers can find over the internet so when you
10:26 pm
get asked as your security question what's your mother's maiden name you don't have to answer it honestly you can say something like grapefruit or fire truck and that is ridiculous enough that you will remember it but no scammer is ever going to be able to steal that you also want to use dual factor authentication where a code is sent to your fall whenever you go online so that this way. even if someone is able to steal steal your password have your security question any of this stuff they're not going to be able to get at your account that's a really big one and then finally the one that so many companies as well as individuals all of us the biggest threats to our computers come from spearfishing where we are allured to clicking on a link that downloads mail where and even if you have the best security software it won't protect you from the latest what we call 0 day defects so the message here is
10:27 pm
you never click on any link you never download any attachment unless you've absolutely confirmed that leads me to number 5 and number 5 is my motto trust me you can't trust anyone you've got to got to be skeptical yes or things aren't as bad as they seem they're worse thank you attorney author and bentley university professor and 86 scam busters stephen jay jay wiseman. and thank you for watching the big picture if your cable company doesn't have r t america cut the cord we're live at you tube dot com slash r t america got directv we're channel 321 on pluto t.v. we are 279 and if you have the dish dish we are 280 there and all of our shows are available any time anywhere on our to use new portable t.v. app it's free in the app store or google play and we are on demand at youtube dot

a true explorer someone who loves to paint the president in order to figure out the future i'm here with architect urbanist writer a thinker rand paul has in his office to talk about the future of the city and the future landscape. graham it's so good to have you here on our program i've been wanting to ask you all kinds of questions big questions i was essential ones all trying yes but like i want to start with your exhibit at the guggenheim that's opening. so it's called countryside the future. and it's really funny you say that because most of the people i've spoken to big thinkers most of them agree that the future is with and big cities don't want to win because. so when you name it like that do you is it just a concept or do you really believe the future is a it's of course. it's a very cold. case and because in 2007 the un so many
