innes in those moments we have to start beginning to trust what is coming from within. to unleash the full power of the federal government of this effort today i am officially declaring a national emergency the us has stepped up its response to thwart the spread of the corona virus following the suit with other countries across europe and asia. as the greek island of lesbos records its 1st infection locals fear that they will not be able to cope while contending with an overcrowded refugee camp. if it gets like will be doomed because the island only has one hospital displaced snipe at least let's hope a lot of people here and now you don't know we saw. and u.s. markets reacted to a show of support from washington making gains after stocks took their worst hit since 1980 seven's black monday crash this time caused by investor fears over the

handling of covert 1000 crisis. visit our dot com for more coverage of stories from around the world stay with us now though for the big picture right here on our show international. on this week's show in the news business we say that stories like corona virus block out the sun but there sure is other news you need to know when we'll have at it but 1st outbreak update. we fear a deadly respiratory disease for which there is no vaccine and is coronavirus also a mental health threat if you are anxious you are not alone i'm holland cook in washington this is the big picture on our to you america.

9 years ago the matt damon gwyneth paltrow kate winslet thriller contagion foretold what many fear could be unfolding right now. the average person to see their faces 3 to 5 times every week. or know a lot of friends and each other. italy is under nationwide lockdown schools are closed to sports and other public events even religious ceremonies are cancelled if you went to italy to see the sistine chapel or the ancient ruins of pompei you're out of luck prime minister just epic conti calls this italy's darkest hour st patrick's day parades are cancelled in ireland here in the usa more schools and colleges are closing every day and as lots of business trips are being called off here is a snapshot of the emerging new normal. this is tom the shoeshine guy at
11:03 pm
the providence rhode island to airport although sharply reduced air travel has whacked his business tom shrugs i've always viewed teleconferencing as a threat. how are the rest of us coping let's ask mark rutherford a licensed psycho therapist in private practice in south florida and as a member of the palm beach county school board mark has a front row seat for another aspect of this rapidly changing story marc welcome back. and thanks for having me hey how are the changes in life's routine in just the last month upsetting the people that you council. it's very interesting it's been you know. has been going on for a while but really you really has seen a change in the collective consciousness maybe in the last 4 to 5 days people come in feeling very panicked you know they worry about money they worry about health they worry about their children and it just kind of builds upon builds upon that as
11:04 pm
each day passes the vibe generally is different than it was just several weeks ago . at 100 percent it's very very different people knew coronavirus was around they were keeping their eyes on it we were watching it in the room there were reports out of the white house and and the news outlets that in the last couple of days it's just been a tidal wave of information and fear well you mentioned money concerns and getting through the short term is one thing but now the stock market is a scary roller coaster and for several years economists have been warning that we are overdue for a recession tell me what you're hearing about for a one k. anxiety or other long term future for yours. it is interesting because all of the stuff we hear on t.v. is to if you have a 401 k. hold on to it don't panic but people are panicking you know the are getting put out
11:05 pm
of work i had a woman in my office yesterday in the fetal position on the floor she had many many contracts that were done overseas and 8 out of the 10 contracts were pulled not. indefinitely just pulled and so people are really starting to feel the effects of that and when you put it so quickly and in such a sweeping fashion i think people don't have the time to think long term they don't really they can't understand ok what's going to be like in a year from now or even 6 months from now they're worried about oh my goodness and they're going to be able to pay rent or buy groceries so that panic sets upon and they aren't able to really think clearly sudden surprises overriding long term concerns and i don't know anybody who's not touched by this i personally fly southwest airlines twice a week so i was unsurprised to get this e-mail it reads we spend between 6 and 7 hours cleaning each aircraft every night and as of march for we have
11:06 pm
enhanced our overnight cleaning procedures typically we use an e.p.a. approved hospital grade disinfectant in the lavatories and interior cabin cleaner in the cabin and now they're expanding the use of the hospital grade disinfectant throughout the year craft and it's going to be used in the cabin elements on the flight deck and in the lavatory and they say that this goes beyond the standard c.d.c. guidelines i'm sure we're getting all kinds of notices like this from businesses that we interact with mark how much do is surance is like this help emotionally. what you know at 1st blush it's nice to hear they're cleaning extra and taking extra precautions but it's the onslaught of information it's the the the language that is that is coming off of the t.v. and in each of the images that we see people walking around the surgical gloves in
11:07 pm
masks on so oftentimes you know what charlie brown's teacher. is that oftentimes a lot of this information people just aren't hearing because they're. it up in their own narrative about what it is that how how this directly impacts their life so the repetitive nature of the information coming out i think is crucial because i think people are hearing just a small fragment of hey how can parents talk to their kids about what's happening. so you know i sit on the school board and we had a emergency meeting 2 days ago in there was a very directed approach to teachers and guidance counselors and staff to talk to and parents talk to their children is one about maintaining structure these kids are going to be out of school for a while if you're you know doing online classes try to keep them at the same times as the kids go to school so they have some sense of when and what is happening you know we do school from 8 to 8 o'clock to 3 pm and keep that on schedule the other
11:08 pm
piece is just kind of a calming effect there's so much information out there and kids get it on their phone in the rapids and t.v. in from friends that we don't want to lie to them we don't want to tell them that everything is going to be ok we tell them we're going to do this together i'm always going to be here from you for you and we're going to take this one step at a time kids that are not calming and structure and kids can really read the room i think the parents composure is worth a lot in this conversation isn't it. yes i mean children see way more than we actually give them credit for and even just the energy of 2 parents talking kind of quietly in whispers at the dining room table while the child is watching t.v. they can pick up on that i see a lot of young kids in my practice in this past week they will say things like mommy is worried and so they don't really know exactly what it all is about these
11:09 pm
kids are sometimes often young but they know something's up you know and there's a lot of dissent from asian on the school bus on the playground correct. yes in palm beach county. there's been this directed effort to get signage you know that is with pictures and not with language to put on every school bus to put in every bathroom to put in every classroom so that even kids who aren't able to read at all can see the piece around washing your hands or talking to a teacher if you're afraid these kind of things just to calm them down because there isn't an answer right now and we're in in a place of not only indecision but not a solution and so they these kids can't help with that so we have to keep them calm kids are like the stock market it's a doubt they'd rather have bad news than doubt a mark we are living in a very social culture when we go to a game we cheer on the team alongside other fans wearing matching jerseys now the
11:10 pm
games are canceled as are donald trump's arena rallies and in troubled times when faith gives us strength places of worship are now closing how hurtful is it not to be able to assemble. will so health ways it's you know it's necessary but it's not be able to a symbol is it is a big piece especially for teenagers who are very social in nature you know the idea so there's something called chaos theory and when chaos ensues which is where we're at panic begins and panic is a fear based emotion and fear is an isolating emotion and so they're not only internally in a fearful place which is isolating they're also tangibly externally in an isolated place they can't see or talk to their friends this is where we in a lot of us adults complain about social media and kids online too much this is the time where it can actually help they can face time their friends they can do group
11:11 pm
chats they can connect over social media to make them feel less alone so where as these big events are happening where they could maybe meet up with their friends at a mall or at a concert or at a sporting event they can act. we connect online and that's very very helpful yeah even just 1020 years ago prefer time we would have felt more isolated but about cabin fever as more of us our self quarantining were stocking up on things we keep seeing pictures of empty shelves or we see empty shelves when we're out hoarding how can we prepare emotionally to be holed up at home for what could easily be a couple weeks. there's a number of things you know one is about you know long term planning versus short term planning what are we going to do today you know because in this environment where so much is actually changing on a day to day basis it's really hard to make long term plans so what are we going to do today we're going to watch a movie or we're going to wash the dog or are we going to go take
11:12 pm
a walk around the block what is it that we can do to occupy our time to pay attention to the chaos that is going on around us but also to create some structure and some joy some happiness on a day to day knowing that tomorrow might be different we might have to come up with another plan but today we're going to do this the short term thinking becomes our friends in times like this we're talking with south florida psycho therapist mark rutherford and mark when we had you won a while back we were talking about information overload apropos the story do sure then and corona coverage has been relentless it's what the news media call a great story because it is so vital and changing so rapidly i have seen you use the term news sabbatical talk to us about giving it a rest. yes so you can't turn on a t.v. or any social media without being just overwhelmed by the amount of information
11:13 pm
news going on about the coronavirus so i tell my patients and my patients parents take a new sabbatical turn off the t.v. put on some music if you. have to watch the news you know watch some of the late night shows get some you more involved in it try not to make it so so heavy with children's minds or developing minds and they can only take in so much information and if we just throw all of that information out they're going to we're all busy and worried and go into the store trying to take care of things we forget that the kids are going to walk around the house with the t.v. on so all of that information it brings them into panic it brings them into fear oftentimes kids do and say things that don't make sense in times like this they tend to have a tendency for what we call catastrophic thinking they may not actually share that with you but it might be their internal narrative of oh my goodness what if you know we're closing down the school what if the school never opens back up what if
11:14 pm
the virus kills everyone what if what if and they start thinking larger and larger so turn off the t.v. have directed conversations with your kids i call it the keep calm and wash your hands conversation we can't do anything with the rest of the world but we actually can do do something to protect and stay save ourselves marc rutherford thank you as always for your thoughtful perspective on this important story thank you for having me alan and perspective is what we need at times like this on twitter i found this corona virus has killed about 3000 people it has crashed financial markets and gets 247 news coverage $9000000.00 people die per year from starvation $25000.00 deaths per day the media never mentions it the difference coronavirus affects the rich starvation doesn't. coming up
11:15 pm
there is other news some overshadowed by a coronavirus coverage so we've got to talk this is the big picture on our t.v. america. with the coronavirus now officially declared a pandemic the world faces the additional burden of an oil market collapse this comes at a time when demand for crude was already flowing some are calling this the ultimate perfect storm how this all. plays against.
11:16 pm
we have to realize we are all living on a small fragile spaceship together and it's really no different than a bunch of people in a harsh environment trying to rely on each other to survive we we are interconnected on this planet we rely on each other or do around the world to survive as a species. while coronavirus coverage dominates the news we are still in the process of picking a president here in the usa and are these 2 separate stories let's ask former georgia state legislator or lead on jones and she who dared to challenge nancy pelosi for her house seat in california deanna lorraine. again welcome both thank
11:17 pm
you thanks so much looks like me and lead on switched colors today. where the only and do you know the last time you were here you were announcing your david versus goliath challenge for the 12 california district seat that speaker pelosi has held forever and we were as disappointed as you when we saw the primary results among your primary opponents someone who has already lost that same race several times and who is for lack of a more derby your term an older white guy and after such a diverse field of democrats launched a presidential bid so i want to ask both of you do you know them dawn in that order what will it take for us to rejuvenate political leadership at every level. well you're absolutely right i mean i hate to say it but my other opponent my republican opponent was an older white guy and people have
11:18 pm
a problem with that it's just the same stereotypical old white men running the republican party that you know even democrats and independents are turned off by and this is the person that has been running for 4 terms that he's ransom's 2010 for the seat against nancy pelosi in san francisco does the same thing he he is kind of like sleepy joe in the way that he has very low energy doesn't have a strong message isn't really strong or proudly voicing conservative values or opinions he's just kind of you know toeing the middle lie and so he can get more votes or try to appease to both the left and the right and you know that's a problem we need to have younger leadership in office i think we need people who are anti-establishment you know on both sides of the aisle we need people who challenge the status quo instead of just go right along with the status quo and
11:19 pm
again i think we need. young fresh energetic leaders who are loud and proud who are willing to do things that are more unconventional bold and unique to gather attention and that's definitely what my campaign was in contrast to his dawn that 1st democratic debate was delightfully to 1st the crowded stage looked like america and now we're down to joe and bernie and they're not even letting told see gabbert back on the stage how do we change this you know when you ask john lewis the congressman from my area he said if someone wants this they better come rip it from my hands actually group the enemy we need some fresh some fresh perspective and that's not a reference to 8 as a reference and that being within the political circles but john lewis is right the people who to change the narrative it's going to have to be young fresh eyes that come in and snatch those seats and we see the end of bernie sanders start in 2016 he started this political revolution and although he may not be doing as well there
11:20 pm
were a number of people who got involved in politics as a result of his revolution that have run for local offices across the board and we're seeing those wins and we need people at the top including nancy pelosi to encourage people to get in these races teach them how to run an effective campaign as well as teach them how to be effective elected officials yet michael moore has made up times that i think applies to both parties is that the down ballot races matter you know run for the local stuff get in the minor leagues of politic our national dialogue about the corona virus outbreak has become like everything else and evitable you political d'anna do you have any doubt that if the shoe was on the other foot a democratic president would be feeling any less heat from the republican undergird . oh well if it was a democrat president right now like president obama everything will thing that he would be doing right now would be praised by the left they would say the. it's the
11:21 pm
perfect response yes oh my gosh he's doing exactly the right thing it would be praised and unfortunately that's not the case with president donald trump right now every single thing he does is not good enough it's not fast enough it's not adequate enough and they just want to rip him apart well that's not fair would actually his response is so much better and so much more adequate than any president in their position that's what is i'm saying what if the shoe is on the other foot do you have any doubt that the republicans would be all over a democratic president given the status quo absolutely they had what we would yeah . i think i think i think anyone in this position any president is going to get critiqued and you know they're under a microscope obviously all eyes are on them to see how they respond in this critical situation right now that's getting wall to wall coverage everyone scared but there's also a lot of fear mongering going on and i think our president's doing a great job of trying to keep the calm trying to keep the facts and not have
11:22 pm
everyone go into such pandemonium i think the left is really trying to create such pandemonium such panic i think a lot of that is unnecessary and also ineffective and handling the situation well i just jump in here it's just what rush limbaugh said how about of lived on grade the administration's response he is failing horribly and i'm not saying that as a democrat or republican listen this thing started he wanted to continue to compare it to the flu despite the fact that many medical professionals said that this is much much more serious than the food and i will say the fact that he was close the borders to china early on was a good step but now we understand that he's on a 17 day working vacation they come back how much flak george bush took from sitting down while the plane and reading a book where the planes are running into the twin towers and now our president in the middle of the biggest pandemic of our generation is taking a working vacation makes us wonder you know he's turned around on many of the
11:23 pm
things that he said before about the seriousness of this he knows something that he's not sharing with the american public and he is doing a horrible job and making sure we're paid well d'anna when the president was 1st asked if he'd been tested for a coronavirus his halting reply was no if only to reassure us that he's ok why not get tested and if you did come up positive if i think it would send an equally useful message it could happen to anyone else isn't that an odd response. i don't necessarily think that's an odd response i think that he you know like a lot of medical professionals have also said that this is more of a strain. the common flu and there has been not very many deaths in the grand scheme of things that mean more people are likely to die on the streets of san francisco or in a car accident there's a lot of mixed opinions out there i think there's a lot of hype and i'm not saying that it may not be serious but he's also trying to avoid unnecessary panic and necessary measures being taken you know i think that he
11:24 pm
doesn't want to scare and worry the public if he did test positive then i think the left would attack him for that say that he needs to quarantine himself and there's just a lot of mixed opinions going on i think the n.b.a. canceling you know the entire season i think disneyland canceling their parks. and it's like those yeah they're just it seems like there might be an overreaction going on and it's a little bit scary because a lot of these things i'm not sure how they recover but i think our president has taken fast and swift measures overall without unnecessary necessarily scaring us he has shut off the you know the travel to china travel to europe he's declared this a national emergency he's doing the quarantines i really don't know what else he could be doing of course the left is focusing on you know the financial impact of this and try to criticizing him every way possible but you know remember obeid and
11:25 pm
obama and how he handled the swine flu. do you think that he did an effective job of handling that when he was his term because i don't think so and most people don't he really failed during that whole before the south carolina primary talking heads were writing joe biden's political obituary now is campaigning as a juggernaut legendary wargamers like son sue karl von close who it's always preached attack yourself by knowing your vulnerabilities dawn let's have some fun if you were advising but trump what would you point as biden weakness. you know i think they're actually already doing exactly what i would advise them i would not attack joe biden directly i would attack the party by talking about how the primaries riggin against bernie sanders about how the media is rigged against bernie sanders they know that that is going to make a number of people who do feel like this is already rigging it was rigged in 2016
11:26 pm
and not show up to the polls when november comes around and so they're doing exactly what they need to do they are helping to make the divide in the democratic party even wider than it already is and it's a smart strategy despite the fact that i don't like it at all our dno vice versa suppose you were working. in an upside down world for guys where would you hit trump. well because i was of the job that our president is doing and i think he's doing a fantastic job i wouldn't really know what to say but 'd some of the things are you know obviously his rhetoric his rhetoric can be very bold sometimes and it can lack political correctness it can be kind of rough around the edges so attacking him for his rhetoric and perhaps a lack of sensitivity sometimes is a strategy that they continue to do and i think that can be an effective strategy
11:27 pm
also i think you know criticizing him on perhaps his handling of you know health care and other issues like that but to be honest you know so much of the so much of the issues that they critique criticize him on are just overblown and manufactured so it's hard for me and i'm being honest here it's hard for me to really criticize doesn't other than things like his rhetoric because i think he really is doing a fantastic job for the economy and it as many other areas in moving the country forward as i'm not surprised to hear either of you say what you said and i appreciate the perspective from both of you and if i can leave you both with one thought it is please keep washing your hands. diana and what don thank you for stepping into the big picture and thank you for watching the big picture you know the deal if your cable company does not have r t america column up and cancel everything but internet access because we're live at youtube dot com slash r t america if you have directv we're channel 321 and with everything canceled
