well there i'm an electron you're watching in question broadcasting live from our team america national headquarters in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from all around the world today on to our top story now coded 19 and how it's taking a toll on a growing number of people and global economies. as of today the total number of global deaths due to the virus is well over 900000
2:01 pm
the number of infections now closer 243-0000 china of course still leading the way with about 81000 cases there followed by italy with 69000 and the u.s. rounding out the top 3 with 54000 now taking a closer look at this country some 790 americans have now died due to complications from the virus and here in the nation's capital the white house and congress struck a deal early this morning to deliver a massive 2 trillion dollar coronavirus relief package the spending bill which is the biggest relief package ever in u.s. history would alleviate some of the economic impact of kobe $1000.00 such as providing support to businesses and sending checks out to needy families so let's take a look across the pond over to the u.k. where parliament is expected to close a week early due to the pandemic a new reports that prince charles has tested positive. for the virus we're covering

the virus from all angles here with our team george galloway over in london ben swan and farron from jack in studio all standing by let's start with sharon so much has changed overnight here in washington fair and what more can you tell us boy it has mandela after 5 days of intense negotiations and 2 failed votes in the senate democrats and republicans they finally hammered out a deal and came to an agreement around 130 wednesday morning both the senate majority and minority leaders they were very happy about what they were able to put in this coronavirus relief bill so let's take a look at what each side was able to win in this bill so for republicans their main focus was to help corporations and businesses as well as hospitals democrats who are fighting them on this saying that it's about the people not the corporations so republicans were able to keep those emergency loans again to corporations but also small businesses and that's why democrats and republicans they made a compromise democrats won the argument of strict oversight where corporations will be required to lay out how they'll spend their emergency loans and also make it
2:03 pm
public not just to congress but to the american people as well democrats also got an oversight board to monitor businesses and their federal aid spending minority leader chuck schumer also calling his workers 1st unemployment compensation on steroids where anyone who has lost their job due to the coronavirus will have their salary plus benefits paid for by the federal government now both sides also agreed on funding for hospitals nursing homes and health care workers along with direct checks to the american people that we've been seeing that $1200.00 per american being thrown out there but as far as who gets what and how much those kinds those actually kings are still being ironed out at the moment right now all the details are being written up to make sure like any other contract they have it all down in writing now the senate is set to vote and pass this 2 trillion dollar stimulus bill wednesday afternoon all in effort to keep the u.s. economy from going into a great depression once it's passed it goes to president donald trump's desk where he's been asking and waiting for it and he is expected to sign it at mediately monella all right turn. to our panel now to expand on this over in london former
2:04 pm
u.k. m.p. george galloway and investigative journalist and co-host of boom bust ben swan will weigh in so ben i want to head over to you 1st what do you make of this attempt at relief for the american people. why there's so a lot of questions about it you know fairing it did a great job right now of laying out for us kind of some of the details of this but in reality even though the senate and congress is saying this is about 2 trillion dollars worth of relief which would make it almost 3 times larger than the bailout that we saw in 2008 but in fact there are a lot of insiders who are saying that this number is actually much higher and when we get into the actual numbers of it it's probably going to be closer to 10 trillion dollars in terms of relief now this is not you know just money being doled out some of it will be repaid because some of it's in the form of loans some is in the form of direct payments so that's a big deal but remember this is also separate from the 4 trillion dollars that the fed is trying to pump into the economy right now so we're talking about
2:05 pm
a massive amount of money a massive amount of liquidation that's going on in liquidity going into the market the big question will be how many real americans actually get relief from this and how much of this winds up becoming corporate welfare and george you have actually been on the other end of this kind of conversation before are american lawmakers doing the right thing here and well the u.k. parliament consider similar measures to stop the bleeding before parliament is suspended. well i think 1st of all it's about to suspend parliament it was an even suspended when it was literally being bombed the chamber of the house of commons during the blitz in the 2nd world war was destroyed and all the members decamped to the court of door which is where mr churchill gave his great wartime speech as though it wasn't televised then so no one knew they were all huddled in a rather small cottage door i think it sends
2:06 pm
a message when lawmakers dig for the hills when there judy is clearly the home of events far as that's possible to be but of course a balance to be struck. politicians can never lie but they can be economical with the actuality i do think that they have to show the people that life goes on that the leaders are leading and some relief in the end will be forthcoming saw lawmakers haggling or poor baal's not good signs wouldn't happen here we don't have the same system. you're haggling where people were dicing with this demand and people were dying and falling sick didn't look good from here manila. you you said that right george i mean pete no matter what these people are going to debate on the hill there are things happening in real time that are not
2:07 pm
being addressed and then what about the president's remarks last night aiming to reopen america by easter sunday i mean good idea bad idea mind you that my new ben that this is against of the recommendation of medical professionals who believe this is going to take a lot more months before it resolves itself yeah well a couple thoughts on that 1st of all i don't think the president is going to get his way of saying we will reopen everything by easter weekend but i think what he will be able to do is say by easter weekend we have a very clear timetable for when things get back to normal but look i've been advocating long before the president said this i actually was advocating court before he did set it which is a similar essentially this we have to get the economy going again and you cannot shut down the entire economy over a virus even though you know yes 790 deaths of taken place but again i want to remind viewers over 22000 people have died from the flu this year in the united states alone and we haven't shut down the economy for them so the idea that we're
2:08 pm
shutting down the economy the way that we have and yes i know that the the medical professionals are saying no no no we have to keep it this way but they're looking at this through a vacuum in terms of simply the issue of dealing with the virus there are far more things to take into consideration here including the fact that you have the single largest workforce in america our service jobs related to restaurants and service industries like that the restaurant industry employs over 50000000 people in this country and none of those people are working right now that cannot continue and by the way we as taxpayers can't pay everyone salary and health benefits indefinitely the idea that we could do it even beyond just a few weeks is insane yet george what's your take on that i mean where are the american president's remarks on this are they irresponsible and was he just perhaps too optimistic. well it's about those balance that i was talking about i'm sure he'll have to eat those words but the. doesn't necessarily mean to have spoken up because it's important to give people the sense that this is not for of our
2:09 pm
whatever restrictions of our new laws or new disciplines we're applying will not last for of all those hope those light the end of the tunnel i do think that political leaders have to strike that balance because if they were to say to people by the way you're going to be along down and shivering in your homes next winter as a result of the coronavirus that may have entirely unpredictable and unpleasant consequences and george i want to stay with you for one more minute the breaking news this morning was prince charles has come down with a coronavirus of what are you hearing on that side of the pond. where he and his wife brought government structure for the holiday home our castle in scotland and that wasn't popular here no he's managed to get himself tested
2:10 pm
a bit like ron paul that we discussed the other day when virtually no one else has been tested and it is positive it's quite serious news he's a man in his seventy's his mother of course in her ninety's his father almost a 100 years old how. it's filled with the symbolism the heir to the throne himself has now gone down with the coronado so as one wag put it it's not the coat or no corona ation he had in mind why that is a sad and kind of scary pine bed george part of a good point we were talking about rand paul earlier this week and how he tested positive and he likely paid for it himself obviously but what do you make of that of of high powered people like rand paul prince charles big money n.b.a. players being able to essentially cut the queue and go take a test when they're not even showing symptoms. yeah well i think what's really
2:11 pm
crazy about this is not that this group of people was are have access to tests it's that more people don't have access to tests it's insane that in south korea they have been able to test as many people as they have they're testing more people than anyplace else in the world and in the united states we can't find tests anywhere and part of the problem for that you know is the issue of the f.d.a. that the f.d.a. has a very long arduous guidelines that are set up to prevent private companies from being able to create tests and that those rules were only removed a few days ago but they should have been removed a long time ago to allow private companies to come up with these tests instead the f.d.a. locks it down so i don't think the problem is just that these people get access to tests it's that we should have far more tests in this country every american should be able to access a test anytime they want to check themselves and we would have much better numbers if we knew that we know how many actual cases there are who is most at risk in the areas where we're seeing now the most and we also have
2:12 pm
a much better idea of the actual mortality rate which we still don't have a very clear view of and judge what about on your side of the pond how is testing going there and it seems like the brits have more access to these tests than we do stateside. yes but as ben just said. few days in fact nobody had been tested in britain unless they turned up already sick and suspecting that they had the virus if you could run dimly test the population which ought to be scientifically and financially easy to do then we'd have a better handle on how many people have already got this there's an oxford university study just been published which postulates only postulates that half the people in the country have already got this virus which would mean if true that a lot of people shrugged it off and are now immune to it the old herd immunity issue we don't know if that's true because not enough people have been tested
2:13 pm
unless they've got the shellings like some top level people have got to somehow a test for themselves so we need random testing in the population and we need to urgently that is a very good point i will have to leave it right there gentlemen ben swan and george galloway thank you for weighing in on this topic. thank you. all right the number of deaths from corona virus in spain has officially surpassed that toll in china as of today spain has had 3434 deaths compared to china's 3281 fatalities just in the last 24 hours spain recorded more than 700 deaths making it the 2nd highest in the world trailing just behind italy who now recorded 6800 deaths so far. and over in china the epicenter of the virus that city now reporting no new cases there china announced it will lift the
2:14 pm
lockdown after a significant decrease in the number of infections similar lockdown measures will also be lifted for other cities in the province. take a look at this here as demand for air travel takes a nose dive airlines around the world are grounding higher fleets what you're seeing here are hundreds of commercial planes parked at a remote desert facility in victor bell california just outside of los angeles airlines in the nation continue to struggle with the average flight just over 20 percent full and that figure is expected to drop into the teens by this weekend. and after criticizing china's authoritarian take on covert 1000 europe is now following beijing's footsteps in trying to contain the outbreak a full report on that straight ahead and then later at the sports h.q. we're going to hammer brings us preseason news that spells ballot luck or the new york mets will be right back.
