democratic choice over trump corporate law joining us as we try to find a point to. welcoming our viewers from around the world live from central london this is our 2 u.k. . the u.k.'s health service is under pressure despite plans for a brand new hospital i don't know me of volunteers as reports emerged of abuse being directed at n.h.s. workers we hear from a frontline doctor. hotel chain travelodge it makes homeless families with just hours notice blaming government advice over the coronavirus crisis. in. the u.k. stands isolated as the prime minister refuses the e.u.'s offer to bulk buy key equipment like ventilators we get reaction from my europe correspondent.
11:01 am
and fears grow over a potential mental health crisis triggered by the government's social distancing regulations. welcome to r.t. u.k. the growth virus crisis is ramping up pressure on the health services the u.k. death toll continues to rise and it comes amid reports of n.h.s. workers suffering abuse with some becoming a target for muggers well for more on this on a shot it was dusty joins me now hi there shot is so pretty dramatic developments so it's day 3 of the u.k. wide lockdown a national state of emergency and the latest figures are quite stark now 1 more than 9500 people have contracted kovac 19 with the death toll at 465 which is up 43 in just the last 24 hours however on the surface it appears to be the smallest rise of the week but actually the government has moved when the
11:02 am
time of death is a record it using a morning cutoff instead so potentially tomorrow morning we could actually see quite a spike now the n.h.s. are treating this crisis as one that will get worse before it gets better and. and now preparing for that eventuality of course the government did announce just yesterday that more than half a 1000000 people have put their names forward to house and h.s. on the front line they're putting their names into the how to do various activities like a scorching patients back from hospital and even collecting medicines and giving and distributing it to the patients as well as providing on the telephone support to those that are most vulnerable and in need of course so london is the epicenter of this crisis experiencing the most amount of deaths and cases on a day to day basis so what we've seen now to help deal with this pandemic is the construction of a new hospital in the heart of london. i'm here. in central london just say making
11:03 am
a new makeshift hospital truly making of cables for it but. this more is to be served very seriously and you know saw their small name come in and this is the saw use of google. and the size is absolutely huge the nightingale emergency facility in london's xcel center in east london will eventually hold 4000 critical care spread across 2 wards each one being a kilometer long reports say that the doors could open as early as monday though with an initial 500 beds being made available for use but this facility is planned to be just one of potentially 10 crisis centers around the united kingdom all designed to deal with a surge of patients with breathing difficulties needing to access ventilators now all of that comes as the n.h.s. staff have been told to hide their work identity badges when they're coming in and out of hospitals because believe it or not there has been
11:04 am
a spate of incidents where staff have been targeted by marketers who want to get access to their free food and drinks that has been made available to medical professionals on the frontline of this virus well to say thank you to those on the front line in the n.h.s. tonight the united kingdom will follow the lead of various european countries that are applauding the n.h.s. staff medical professionals it's a campaign called clap for carers and at 8 o'clock this evening people are being urged to go outside their homes and beginning applauding for the n.h.s. as a mark a small gesture to say thanks for the great impact and staff are having. a you very much indeed. want to discuss all of those points that are being raised are now joined by a general practitioner dr having. you very much indeed for joining us i mean what we've been hearing about is the best and worst of society is not half a 1000000 volunteers but staff facing abuse i know it's so sad to hear that
11:05 am
staff or have you been to these measures and hide their identity about jews but to be honest with you if that's what it takes to keep the country station they should what do you think possesses someone to abuse a medic. it happens at the unit it isn't the 1st time that it would happen it does happen and again it's not the right thing to do indeed also though those stealing n.h.s. badges for food that seems to be quite a different problem there doesn't it. it does and i think you've got to look at the big issue are people worried about where they're getting food from are they worried about how the government pays going to affect them or are they just you know sadly attacking those people who could potentially save their lives and dave about something perhaps the chancellor is going to be addressing later in terms of the finances but in the meantime there are plans to ramp up testing for staff do you think that's too little too late. i think we've had to wait for the appropriate
11:06 am
tests to come into place and the new tests that are coming up are going to be much quicker they're going to be more instances and i think the 1st tests that do become available should be made to n.h.s. staff i'm not sure that people really realize that this virus is affecting our n.h.s. staff as well we've got people who are sick we've got people who are vulnerable and we've got people who are looking after. family members at home i know there are g.p.'s that are frightened i know there are there are the n.h.s. workers that are actually scared that they're bringing the virus home to their families where they might well have people who are indeed very sick but are you ever scared i mean are you ever scared about the virus or also the fact you might come into contact with people as well who might have these. i don't tend to worry about being attacked and i think that we could all walk outside our front doors and that could potentially happen to us so i don't tend to worry about that myself i sincerely hope that it doesn't happen that at the moment there's nothing anyone can
11:07 am
do to stop that from happening so i try not to worry about it myself. as far as about the virus personally again i'm not a worrier so if i put everything in place and stay calm and continue with social distancing and protecting my family and then i know that i'm doing everything that is possible to keep them and myself safe and by being safe i'm then able to carry on with my work but what about your colleagues there how do they feel. there is a mixed picture but to be honest with you we've got a big job to do and by how everybody in the country at the moment is helping to protect the n.h.s. and that includes the facilities their parking spaces their food their identity badges if they don't have an identity badge they potentially can't get to work so and i think everybody in the country has. a responsibility to actually follow the
11:08 am
guidelines that has been set out and help the n.h.s. do their job well the new hospital in east london doesn't really underline how bad this is expected to get. i believe that is a big eye opener for many people as. the person that you spoke to earlier said that he didn't really understand this how about this could get until he saw the one kilometer that that he's going into exile and having been to conferences there myself i know how large that places and i think is the perfect location conference center is art really ends and it will look rather like commit your hospital but it be manned by some of the most brilliant doctors from the military and the n.h.s. that the country as it is of some comfort also though tonight celebration of the n.h.s. that's a bit of a giver of positivity isn't it everyone applauding that they must know that the whole nation is behind them generally aren't they. i think the majority of people are and the care is 8 pm tonight let's open our doors and really set
11:09 am
a break what these wonderful people are doing in order to try and keep everybody safe and save as many lives as possible absolutely doctor out of having thank you very much indeed for joining us thank you. boris johnson has suggested the m.p.'s considered new laws against black market profiteering during the pandemic it comes amid reports of recent panic buying at the raising of prices on essential products. am i right on befriend the prime minister assure me that he had regular contact with supermarkets and food supplies to ensure that goods are getting to the shelves where they are needed and will he join me in calling on people to only take what they need not to stockpile and to stamp out the disgusting scourge of black marketing profiteering here yes yes indeed this is because i think the profiteering is something that we should be looking at from a legacy point of view in this houses as has happened before in this country and but i can tell him that the supermarkets do have adequate supplies our supply
11:10 am
chains is as mobile friend knows are our very good relaxed delivery hours but it is very very important that everybody in their shopping reasonably and considerately. boris johnson's call comes to staff at retailer sports direct claim the company has significantly raise prices on number of its lines among the items include skipping ropes race from just on the straight pounds to almost 5 or a set of dumbbell weights or an increase of 20 pounds to $6499.00 even those looking for less strenuous activity have to pay more $1.00 of their dot boards has increased by 10 pounds to just under 40 well suppose i write say the increases were planned and have nothing to do with the pandemic while some goods have seen an increase in price at sports direct to this is not the complete or accurate picture not only were these goods originally discounted but even now they are under the recommended resale price. online marketplaces have also been told to do more to
11:11 am
cope profiteering of key items on their platforms digital somewhat misses that usually cost around $40.00 pounds have been seen on sale for as much as $300.00 while the price of hand sanitizer has increased $10.00 fold selling for almost 10 pounds sanity products that normally retail for around 3 pounds have doubled and increases for baby formula have been found online for 4 times their original shop price or the government's call to crack down on profiteering comes as one of the companies selling covert 19 testing kits has a tory m.p. as a consultant i went paterson earns about $100000.00 pounds a year advise in round docs liberal trees whose kid is marketed at $120.00 pounds we have yet to receive a comment from paterson or run docs but the company has previously defended its position as a private company with over 40 years investment in and commitment to the diagnostics industry run docs quickly developed a code 19 test and were able to provide that test with
11:12 am
a home sample collection capability at a very competitive price that price is a matter of public record or to discuss all of this are joined by councilor jazz aswell just thank you very much for joining us i mean is making laws against profiteering now a case of closing the door after the horse has bolted. i think i think a lot of residents of certainly felt that and i think. making sure that we actually try and still carry on with the way the residents expect us to it's really important and certainly what we've done in red breeches made sure our enforcement team has gone out to even though there are no real laws in place but there are certain things we could have done and we did do that and there were things like making sure that our trading standards went out reminded the traders exactly of their responsibility and the pitiful situation that we find ourselves in and not to profiteer from that but also to make thought make sure we do the proper checks on
11:13 am
everything else like fire safety like waste management and ensuring the sale of any niger knitting everything is checked out and we made sure we made it as difficult as possible to make sure that our residents got as much as we could do under the law at the at the moment but certainly the law is coming it's going to make it harder for people to profiteer and that can't come soon enough indeed i mean the thing is though there's nothing any good about hiking prices it's just a question of morality really at this time isn't it it is and certainly it's a question of greed because certainly the virus here before covert 19 is grete and what we've said to our residents is to make sure look when you needed help from the council we put in things like free one hour parking we've increased the the the enforcement team to help you and also the government has actually given you though their window of pain of the 80 in 8 years time and making sure that you get
11:14 am
access to grants and you'll start getting 80 percent of the salary and certainly your business rates all these things have come in and yet they still decide they want to profiteer it is unbelievable that people are so greedy at this particular time in particular you know this is never happened for the last sort of 100. years or so the only 2 other sort of events that mimic anything like what's happening today is the 2 world wars and yet people still find the opportunity to try and profiteer from ordinary human beings who are simply frightened just do you think that naming and shaming particularly now as we have social media as well do you think that's effective. i think i think it's a lot or what i would say to these shops is that these bad times are going to last forever and when they're done i think their own lot of residents look very angry and they will remember what they did when they needed their shopkeepers to step up to the plate there are you know the frontline services like the n.h.s.
11:15 am
doctors they're put literally putting their lives at risk for these people and yet we're sort of still trying to profiteer so certainly we will be looking into this and residents will not forget when this is over but i guess they find it as i mean it's a case of supply and demand doesn't it and if there is a market for it people will be willing to sell us and i think the demand use and you hit the nail on the head when you said it's a moral obligation at this moment when everybody i mean i've got been men who are going out 1st thing in the morning an hour earlier an hour later and you know you've got the twitter feed on the nurses that has done an 18 hour shift and she goes to the local supermarket not only have the residence of the police for every penny but also there's no food left and people are just sort of being very very greedy it brings the worst out about us as human beings but certainly from the n.h.s. and the emergency services if the best out of them as well date and i'm not positive that we will leave it can such as off our thank you for joining us thank you. for

the travelodge hotel chain is under fire citing the coronavirus crisis as a reason to have it homeless families who've been placed in the rooms by local councils. travelodge sent a letter to hundreds of residents including homeless families to inform them that hotels were closing down due to the government's coronavirus restrictions they instructed these people to vacate the hotel within hours of the letter being sent critics of the new restrictions took to twitter to express their outrage with people dubbing the move to evict those with nowhere to go a scandalous while others said they would boycott such change when life returns to normal. while some defended the move placing the responsibility on local authorities as it's not financially viable for hotels to remain open while a spokesperson for the hotel said they were following government advice travelodge has been obliged to commence for temporary closure of its hotels in line with the

instructions from the government on the 24th of march 2020 we do expect to remain open in selected critical locations across the country to support accommodation for emergency workers and other groups we are reviewing daily which hotels are best positioned to support the needs of a rise of a government while ensuring we comply with the new restrictions in place to protect the public. coming up after the break. the u.k. refuses to use help to bulk buy ventilators assam any piece criticize the response of certain member states to the coronavirus pandemic average oint by europe correspondent. when i almost show seemed wrong all right old quotes just don't hold. me close

the stock market i could imagine trading in a 1000 again on the dow and that would be an appropriate level given the true underlying economic factors the bond market is sure the interest rate should be 45 percent in the in the 30 day interest rate ok that would mean bonds would be down 506070 percent but that's that's separate that's return to normal valuation and that's what we need right. a are. welcome back the u.k. appears to be totally self isolating as boris johnson refuses e.u. help to bulk buy medical equipment to fight the coronavirus it comes as some any piece of criticize the response of certain member states to the pandemic artie's europe correspondent peter all about joins me now with more hi there peter so

division between the u.k. and the e.u. but also within the you itself. well yes let's start off with what's been going on in brussels on thursday the parliament there the european parliament's been debating talking about these proposals that have been put through or put forward by the european commission to handle with the handle be a mediator outcome from the coronavirus but also to deal with what will come in the future in fact this bundle of measures is being talked about as a new marshall plan of the marshall plan of course was used to rebuild europe after world war 2 and in fact in the chamber on thursday we heard ursula for the lion the european commission president talking about the effect that this could well have on generations in the future that they wouldn't see the rubble of crumbling buildings as we did post world war 2 but that there was still would be an effect there one of
11:21 am
these things that was put forward is the decision to group together to buy important medical equipment we're talking masks we're talking gloves and all important ventilators the offer was made to the united kingdom to get involved in that downing street though has said no they don't want to be part of that they're going to go it alone on the line for her part though has come under some criticism for the way that the european union the european commission has addressed this she was speaking to in the empty european parliament that's partly due to the fact that many a u m e p's can actually get to brussels also social distancing precautions that are in place as well she said europe is now ready to step up to the plate but the story from the last few weeks is hardly a painful one to tell. when europe really needed to be there for each other
11:22 am
too many initially looked out for themselves. when europe really needed an all or fall one spirit too many nationally gave an only for me response. what we do now metrics for today as well as for the future and we all know well venue's that hospitals and sex and nice to patients from lumber d. while others from the grandest in finance and now bearing being treated in the ground. and luxemburg this only goes to prove that it only it is only by helping each other that we can help ourselves for the u.k. response in turning down the offer to be part of that collective along with the european union was very simple they said we're no longer part of the european union
11:23 am
so they will be going alone that will be to the united kingdom will be going alone when it comes to making their own precautions back to brussels and back to what was going on in the european parliament the standout performer in the debates that we saw on thursday was really mount on the old bridge the french army not only former well impassioned and let's face it agricultural langridge language that she used in saying how essential it was that musk's were given out to those that need masks both in her own country of france and also across the european union but she also took time to scold those in europe who have used this crisis as an attempt to try and seize power and also to try and turn a quick buck. goal in mind this to mess you most of what you'd assume when we see that germany is following the guidelines for example some other states are just waiting for people to turn up at their hospitals because of it all but is doing while achieving total party with deafening silence for the rest of us the czech

republic and italy are actually fighting over little italy of march this is the shame to face of europe which is terribly on the united. states can do with this solidarity of people has to be something which provides a reason that train of europe the european parliament is expected to vote through these proposals put forward by the european commission later on thursday evening as i say though they are taking this seriously it's been talked about something the language that they're using to talk about at this point certainly taking it seriously talking about it as a new marshall plan not only to deal with the virus now but to rebuild once it's passed a hit all of us thank you for joining us. now across the globe there are growing concerns about how the coronavirus crisis is affecting people's mental health it's emerged that a health worker in italy has committed suicide after working on the front line. 34 year old daniela thread say what on the intensive care unit of the ship santa jet

been discussing for the past 10 years here on kaiser report and one of the people most responsible for the imbalances that we see in the world that the global trade imbalances the global neal liberal imbalances caused by all of this insanity of sending our manufacturing overseas for example is larry summers he was the treasury secretary under bill clinton from 1909 to 2001 so he oversaw glass steagall remove all he oversaw w t o. except in china into the world trade organization he saw all those sort of things that dismantled the commodity futures modernization act he saw the stuff that created the destabilization that we see going on so it was quite ironic or and indeed quite repulsive to see him tweet this max thoughts at the end of a long week why.
