11:30 am
and that mr out tonight. to many people and too many little government people for them to tell you that oh come on you can come we're going to protect you and you're not going to do that. cold i think if people realize that the government is not going to protect you is
11:31 am
not going this leave you if something were to happen it kind of like changes your your mindset your like only because i was in the theory i know how the government works and i don't want to put money into that i don't believe they're going to protect me when the time comes so the only way you can protect yourself is by protecting yourself. here sitting in front of a blast proof bunker made by the u.s. army during world war 2 it is 2200 square feet. it's very large but it's not the only one. there's $575.00 of them around me. stretching out 6 miles it leaves directions 3 miles in
11:32 am
these directions. nobody was able to figure out what to do with the ones empty bunkers. but finally one of the ranchers that owned this section called me and said would you be interested i have 575 bunkers we are now building this into the world's largest survival community with as many bunkers as we have we will eventually have 5 to 10000 people here ringback ringback. it will take them up on i think beyond us and link up where that guy flow could both man. and run out of on
11:33 am
something happened to the generator. you know so i'm running off in my solar things out there's a lot of sun today so everything is have lights on fine i've got a food. and i also have my maybe in chicago that really helps me out she works and iraq iran member struggling she will help me out and she's going on incredible to me because i met her when i moved here before light. 3 or 4 months before i moved here and i told her i said look i'm outta here i quit my job i'm leaving you know we can start this then one thing led to another and we start going strong and i love her and she's eventually going to get here.
11:34 am
but. it's a good like. ok this is both ages ago. there you go it has put your looks. this is all kim's left freaked out stuff you did go ahead and it gets elaine to do with gasoline yet you do it all. give us something to drink a little bit here we got some good water here. food so it can good let me check the temperature on this again. like you can't go a little bit keep your freezer gone. house at 9 shadow where you shadows she's busy i want to sit down look at the t.v. here for a little bit oh oh well yeah we get some news here i did put
11:35 am
a camera and put the antenna on top there's a bunker one of the 1st cancer here. i have to lug and look at i painted the inside but i lost a gallon of paint i don't know why i lost a gallon of paint and it's all over me and my great grandfather's colt. there were officers special of our name off the official who are a constable before world war one when they made gun right afterwards they start stamping amount is what the hell. your government and our government and all the other major governments of the world know what's going to happen and when it's going to. but they haven't told you and
11:36 am
they haven't told me they haven't announced it because if they were to announce it right now and tell you that in one year on a certain date the catastrophe is going to happen. the world would suddenly stop people would panic society would break down and nobody would go to work nobody would care about the law or prison so you'd have lawlessness you'd have. a terrible life between them and the. people. a lot of the pictures here are original so you can see all these pictures are were drawn here and the 5040 s.
11:37 am
and i came to my bunker and i told the incredible pictures storm window frame everything after enslaved everything on a cut off here for every picture i have now. and frame it out so i can kind of show the artwork that was done is incredible were i get this lady here is from hawaii because she has a live me and she looks the wind. and i tell people do you have enough. if something happens for a day have enough food if something happened for today 3 dave have you ever tried not eating for a day have you ever tried not eating for 2 days you know so i try to. open people's minds to the reality that you know your government is going to protect you and. you guys are going to be you going to die because you think i've been eating for 2 hours. and you're going to die because you're putting that in your head and you're
11:38 am
going to die. i am the 1st one to dedicate to doing something like this. i feel this is my calling. i feel this is what i've been preparing for my life. so i took the chance then. moved here you know you can stay here you work on your bunker every day. and we got this light color right here when you come into the door here and the closet i'm going to be putting up here is actually a mirror and it's actually a tan colored mirrors kind of a copper colored mirror and that we can see yourself when you come in or see yourself leave an enemy or gives its respective. perspective for. maybe baker in here even though it's a small room. right now i have 40 foot floor
11:39 am
down sub floor. calm pastored would compress the wood floor once i get phase one done. that would mean. great room the kitchen in there the galley the vents. pantry room. the bathroom now my bathroom actually will have a 12 volt. and cost me $11.00 earn dollars toilet. itself composite the to your waist the gray water goes out down this way. and you take that waste your bottom waste and put it in a barrel and a year later you can use it you date it you use it later and you can use it in your garden.
11:40 am
sell the bunker for $35000.00 currently and that will continue to go up as we run out of supply everybody's heard of the cold war the cold war is over but the holy war is. any big city anywhere in the world you don't know your neighbor you don't know the guy that's 5 miles down the street that has a gun and he's a criminal and he's a gang member and when everything happens the lights go out 1st thing he's going to do is go to the t.v. store and break in and take all the t.v.'s then after that they're going to get hungry so they're going to go to the supermarkets and we're going to take everything in the market off the shelf will be nothing within 24 hours and then after about 3 days till. they're going to be very hot. and then they're going to
11:41 am
come knocking on your door. to say what do you got whatever it is. we want it. and they're going to take it from. the old military bigger excess were they all we all used to see told people that used to the military guys used to run this town right because this used to be over 1500 military families here at one time so it was a big these were all barracks and everyone used and there is here this place you can be nothing but the big beautiful homes and now look it is torn. still beautiful things from you and. a lot of people and over this this location is very filled with and it's
11:42 am
a. an element that extracts nuclear. radiation you can like paper. a nuclear waste and i think that's why they put this here because it's so. in trade it was very early on and if you do have an explosion the really mean to ground will get rid of it faster than if you were the woods somewhere that doesn't have really.
11:43 am
11:44 am
we're presently city and central kansas which is the site of a intercontinental ballistic missile base that was part of the cold war era and this particular site was a atlas athey missile silo which was nuclear hardened and i purchased this site in 2008 with the idea of converting it into a nuclear hardened bunker. the idea to go after a luxury bunker and design a facility like that became in the sas in the early on in the conceptual design phase because we realized that with the relatively small number of units that we could put into that the syllabi they would have to be at a higher price point. in the number one criteria that came up and that was a lot of people would say why need
11:45 am
a bunker that would protect me and my family for 4 to 6 months and then the next guy would command and say well i was thinking that point needs something for at least a year and then someone has a what if we have a global climate change that wiped out crops for 0 so we had to be in there for years so we quickly got feedback from potential customers that had a really big span and timeframe. i know we're in kansas but we decided to make people feel comfortable that are from the coastal welcome to the beach. so one of the things you don't expect to see in an underground bunker is an indoor swimming pool this is 75 feet long and holds 50000 gallons and it's a salt water pool it's all computer controlled and maintained.
11:46 am
so here we have a cross section of the this is the dome of the where we just to tour the pool every day ocean we can go level medical and security the store level of hydroponics and then are stress eventually levels 3 for 5 through 11 and then there's a library in classroom an exercise and theater and then pontian storage. this is the hydroponics level one we're on the lower level there's another identical configuration this room right above us these circular tanks all over here roughly half of the room are all for raising columbia these pipes shaped lower tanks are all for growing plants this half of the floor opposite the securities are a medical facility so and here we have a full pharmacy we've got everything from radiation drugs in.
11:47 am
iodine pills and likes and things like that that's what stored in here then we have a full dental office and we have a medical exam room. and we even have a hospital and procedure room so we can actually do minor surgeries i personally think it's better to depend on yourself than the government for protection so if you can you know what we will do what's the downside here the downside is your family might not survive because you made the wrong choice of being prepared you thought that the government was going to take care of you and if you make those arrangements then. you still have a backup plan if you fail then maybe the government's there but if you come in the government may fail but your backup plan so i would try to do it myself. and maybe in your schoolyard play when the signal.
11:48 am
signal means to stop whatever you are doing and get to the nearest safe place. always remember. of an atomic bomb can come at any time only know the bomb can explode any time of the year day or night it's ready for. in cover. add up boy tony that means act fast tony knows that it helps to get to any kind of cover sundays holidays like asian time we must be ready every day all the time to do the right thing if the atomic bomb explodes. this family knows what to do to your own family should remember what you do tell me right out loud what it was supposed to do when you. were not in a cold war situation anymore like we had in the 1960 s. with the soviet union back then we had what was called duck and cover and we had
11:49 am
a mascot it was a turtle called bart the turtle and he would come dancing around and he would teach the children how to hide in case a bomb went off. i'm 57 years old and i've never seen a country so divided as america is right now so divided that people are buying bunkers in record numbers to protect their family from the unknown because they don't know where their country is going they don't know where this country america that's going to end up in 10 years. we have a saying in america we're all just 9 miles away from anarky now what that means if you take an america and you don't see him for 3 days he will kill you for food.
11:50 am
that has been buzzing around. and i said what can i do to help my family. so i bought it in the next. day but that bunker he doesn't want to know about but bunker he says oh my god roberta what did you do we're going to get termes on this is now i don't well i buy the bunker 9 and thinking i get in the ground. here's your bathroom. come the street is. these challenge. these out of control. i put a little light. here and a little storage area here and then this has storage in here on all 4 of them. and the curtains for privacy. between 59 and 63
11:51 am
degrees all year round it could be snowing up or could be blazing hot in the same pitch or going around i like being alone sometimes so. it's just quiet you don't hear anything at all. not even flies come down here is my girl cave. my husband go let me say this. there's a planet coming through that has its own solar system. in the sun it's got nibiru and it has its own moon it has its own has its own planets are going round it's supposed to pass through between the sun and us. and something as big as the earth is going to cause tidal waves or earthquakes volcanoes. and it's going to chill. it's over it for
11:52 am
a while right and it can happen any time so. much as an ism believe it but i do. it take some crazy not just don't believe the. air part skip way over there. i don't have one here at their place but their pipes are way over there they don't come straight up in most cases like most bunkers they go straight up so if you go up to me pool water and it just goes into the bunker it doesn't happen on my bunkers meyer's parts away over there so somebody comes out and finds an air pipe they try to pour gas in at our pumps smoke or even put carbon monoxide back a car up to a socket to get because of my valves with shut off the carbon dioxide the water go in the ground now if they put in a bag over the pipe that's eventually going to tokyo so there is no bunker i make this not impenetrable but i can help the lion as long as possible so then you have enough air in there to use the escape tunnel the flank the guy sitting in the back
11:53 am
. this is a bunker but this has a like a 4 cox gun vault door inside it has the name of the guy's ranch and you come down the stairs and it has a mud room as well say i ever one of my bunkers has a place to shower and decontaminate before entering the bunker. the shelters we make today are identical to the shelters made for john f. kennedy is. right now the people who are buying bunkers are not the liberals as the conservatives the conservatives are buying the bankers they're buying the guns or buying the food they're buying the image that the left is and buying anything because they figure they have the police in the military and they're kind of crazy to begin with anyway if we could end up in a civil war number 2 in america it would start today it would happen the problem we can't is because we're all intermingled so it's a war of words on the news and media but this country needs to break up and people
11:54 am
need to go to the side that the we need to split this country. this is mine this is mine. just as he didn't want us since his mind is full she will be. loaded and ready and. this is mine she's mine. now you were used to get a laugh now we have a. target. range. they have an area about a mile behind us it's in a little social shooting range and everybody in the local area schools fight to practice well so new short walking. and we practice come home and then we clean the fronts and ready for the next day.
11:55 am
so will you know it's you is another day. the same response i'm sure i'll be able to make them. going to your sister's blown 12 to 25. shelters 400225 depending on the temperature drop here tonight deal situation because of the cool temperature. is long as a remain sealed about 20 years. but what's your biggest fear my neighbors. just in case people always ask me aren't you worried about people knowing where your bunker is i said
11:56 am
no because that point at the press free until. the locals here look at us. like we're crazy that that's a waste of money why are you doing that but the locals also don't know that. if you live in chicago you have nowhere else to go. so why not have things like this. the good thing is everything is paid off. i don't know nobody no money the focus paid off the car the heat off the trailer it all nothing i just got to figure out oh. oh enough weight of pain my childhood pain my daughter's school and that's what i do. just to live their life without fear. then this whole world will be different but every once in one's fearful you need to
11:57 am
break away from that fear because the only thing you have to fear is death that's the way i look at life and i think that i'll just want to enjoy my life because time is precious. time is you know that's what we have here and it's fresh.
11:58 am
in this community there are people who believe that it's ok. it's really hard there are no jobs and you see that i've got kids. and as a parent. i can come up with lots of arguments and there's a lot of conflict within the game between the teams most of the conflict i would say. is made. close one on each of those he knows each other is good because the state of california alone makes $6000000000.00 a year of the prison complex just to get some point in your life where. you don't care and. so you don't care about anything. world
11:59 am
is driven by dreamers shaped by one person or those with. no dares thinks. we dare to ask. a lot of money don't let me know. please. please let them know.
12:00 pm
let me let. the local. welcome to all to you can you we're currently awaiting the government's daily coronavirus press briefing it's not yet clear who will give the update given how many key government figures and al self isolating in the meantime other news this hour. the prime minister's top adviser goes into self isolation with coronavirus as government experts say britain's lockdown could last 6 months. and it just workers say they are forced to hide away the protective equipment and make sure visits as it's claimed to government records for a pandemic 4 years ago but failed to heed the results i'll be talking to a doctor. with moscow in lock down the other regions to
12:01 pm
follow its lead we'll be getting reaction from our correspondent in the russian capital. and that britain is on course for a recession worse than the 2008 credit crunch as analysts predict a major downturn could be coming from a financial expert. also this hour firefighters get set to deliver a food drive evidences and recovered bodies as britain prepares for the peak of the pandemic we'll be talking to a former fighter a little later. welcome to the u.k. live from central london the government has warned that coronavirus a lockdown measures could last for 6 months as the prime minister's chief advisor self isolates with symptoms of the disease that's as worries grow of a shortages of n.h.s.
12:02 pm
resources despite the authorities rehearsing for a very similar scenario 4 years ago. he joins me now with the latest so the virus continues to hit at the heart of the government. yes absolutely we've seen over the weekend the numbers of deaths in the u.k. as a result of covered 900 rise in the latest figures announced today are that's 1408 people have sadly lost their lives across all of the countries in the united kingdom now we've seen last week the prime minister boris johnson testing positive for coded 19 and as a result he's self isolating at number 10 we also saw those images of the government's special advisor dominic cummings running away from downing street now those images that went viral they brought much perhaps levity to what is a very serious situation but actually mr cummins themself is now also self isolating although it's not clear whether he has tested positive yet for or not now
12:03 pm
as i mentioned johnson is self isolating he is quarantined but still he took the opportunity to record a message for the nation i want to thank everybody who's been complying with our instructions to you to stay at home and we've already seen massive falls in railway usage i think down about 95 percent plus you should got about cindy 5 percent people really trying to work from home if they possibly can and that's what we want stay at home protect the n.h.s. saved lives. of course all the advice about social distancing has now become the norm we've seen police over the weekend breaking up a number of gatherings in darby there was a party attended by 25 adults and children a karaoke party and as you can see quite a spread put on it's those types of gathering which the police are now have the
12:04 pm
power to try to stop and to break up now i don't understand any arrests were made but the police do have the ability to arrest people if they persist but also so far in people who are holding these types of gatherings or in other ways who are breaking the quarantine rules now we've been hearing over the weekend from the deputy chief health advisor to the government and she says that all of these restrictive measures could last up to 6 months the issue of the 3 weeks is for us to review where we are and see if we've had an impact jointly on the slope of that curve but i think to make it clear to the public if we are successful we will have squashed the top of that which is brilliant but we must not then suddenly revert to a normal way of living that would be quite dangerous if we start with an all of our efforts will be wasted and we could potentially see a 2nd peak so over time probably over the next 6 months we will have
12:05 pm
a 3 week review we will see where we going we need to keep that later on and then gradually we will be able to hopefully just some of the social distancing measures and grant judy get us all back to normal. dr herries has come in for some criticism because not that long ago just 2 weeks ago she was encouraging people to keep going to large events mass gatherings and so on and so forth calling for schools to stay open and in this period we've seen events like the chelton festival taking place and so it's for those reasons that the doctor has come in for criticism. now and we will be there are some countries where the big sporting events and the these documents galleries $100.00 of them to this one suit all of the militant voices in this country is not to do that in this country we have tasted it and mobile is looking at the bigger political moment and with that it
12:06 pm
will serve as an intervention might help money this is the good will push the people to date and then it would and in general those of the events being carried on nothing seem to be indeed and then he thinks if we get this right it isn't. and how is the n.h.s. coping with all of us at the moment. well the n.h.s. are preparing for the peak of this crisis but it would appear that the n.h.s. could have been better stuff them better prepared and given better resources because 4 years ago the government ran an operation or an exercise to predict exactly this type of scenario it was called exercise cygnus and it was a pandemic model to test the capability of the n.h.s. looking at how they would cope 7 weeks into a pandemic the model or the mark virus was a deadly respiratory virus from asia in almost exactly like coded 19 and that model
12:07 pm
threw up the following conclusions that would be shortages of protective equipment ventilators of critical care beds and overflowing more trees and critically that general n.h.s. capacity would struggle as well because of course it's not just covered 19 there are other people with other health conditions and operations that need to take place all of which seemed to have been put on the back but now so the governments have come in for criticism for not heeding the advice of that exercise but now the government responding saying that they run these types of models all of the time. as the public would expect we regularly test our pandemic plans and the learnings from previous exercises have helped allow us to rapidly response to cope at 19 we are delivering a science led action plan to contain delay in research and mitigate the outbreak and have acted swiftly to contain and slow the spread of the virus significantly to
12:08 pm
save lives up to port our n.h.s. . so in some quarters criticism for how the government have or haven't prepared for an event like this one is a thank you very much indeed for all of the well with those doomsday warnings not being heated some n.h.s. frontline staff say they're forced to hide their personal protective equipment reports say that health workers are grabbing what they can from hospital storage units including face masks and protective glasses is that many a word that there simply aren't enough to go around and that some workers are even calling in sick out of fear the government said it is working to get additional personal protective equipment to frontline staff earlier spoke to physician dr bernard single he suggested that the shortages need actually be down to communication issues. seems to be have. really it's not being it really. and there slightly because are different shows are
12:09 pm
interpreting only had been guidance if. and i mean problems in these very lanes are that they're fundamentally plot and using and contradictory and so chose to be honest have to say you do what with me from these very lanes and making it. really big to the star where some trysts have yet to do that and still dragging behind and not having the right protective clothing it must be terrifying for stuff on the front line physically and mentally it is causing a lot of friends 80 fear amongst friends lame star and that's why we believe that all the suspected patients in the hospital ship fall in they're going to agree or confirmed it was 2 cases and these cases all these cases your property which is as a pyramid serious muscovites are for the balance because any patient who's coughing should fall in the end to get
12:10 pm
a result and this is recognised by them again. and you have a properly prepared for a pandemic of the sort i mean you have experience yourself of these exercises one i don't have experience myself but it is it is a very difficult situation and i think anybody can be ever be properly prepared for these. images and one has to call everybody has to bring to get their pants so i have also been the go home end and also aren't even close but at the same time i think what we the campaign is asking is let's do this with a good friend in a very bitter half of the small because you'll be a lot better if people deal with make it about the stuff. well just to recap those numbers for you the total number of corona virus cases in britain is now over 19000 more than 100 people have recovered from the disease while more than 1400 have lost their lives as for now england has 16487 confirmed
12:11 pm
cases scotland has 1384 wales has 1241 a northern ireland has 410 that's is the 1st minister of scotland announces another new field hospital in glasgow similar to those being billed in meant just birmingham and east london and northern ireland's justice minister has released just under $200.00 prisoners nearing the end of their sentences to help prison authorities deal with the pandemic. across the world the number of people confirmed to have died has nasa parsed 35000 that says the total number of infected people has jumped over 740000 with the epicenter now in the united states 156000 have all ready recovered. the russian president has called on heads of other regions to fall of the capital's lead and instigate tough knock down measures to tackle the coronavirus our correspondent in moscow donald quarter has
12:12 pm
mill. russia still managing to keep down its number of coronavirus cases for a lot lower than what we're seeing in the u.s. and europe right now it's around to it's just under 2000 cases but vladimir putin still wants ordinary people and officials to know that they need to take this crisis seriously he's asked officials across the country actually to follow moscow's lead in strictly carrying out government measures that are intended to combat the spread of the virus. today we are doing only to ensure that the virus doesn't hit a large number of people and the preparations need to take place in all regions and take into account old account collated scenarios of the potential spread on the basis of the experience of other countries we need to take all necessary measures even if uninformed people think they're rather over the top for russia as they say god saves the man who saves himself now the russian capital's measures that we're
12:13 pm
talking about here stopped just short of a full lockdown where people are now required to have special permission to leave their homes for any reason other than to take out the trash get groceries or walk their dog now putin also called for the creation of additional reserves of medical supplies to use in this in this time of crisis and for if the crisis continues to get even worse this is an important decision to make right now when the situation here is really more or less mild in comparison to other places now it's also important that citizens understand the severity of the situation especially the elderly who once again has encouraged to stay home it's really their best chance of protecting their health and their lives amidst this worldwide pandemic and for a while in russia this is just a recommendation but as the coronavirus cases here are gradually continue to rise
12:14 pm
the measures against it against the spread of this virus are slowly becoming more strict so perhaps through those measures russia will be able to maintain its control 'd over the situation. where in other places it spun completely out of control. still to come on. this i know this claim the u.k. is heading towards a recession full with us in 2008 and economics expressed. and british just to help alger in the virus crisis even connecting bodies to talk to form a fall off the shelf break. is your media a reflection of reality. in

12:16 pm
president trump has claimed that keeping coded 19 deaths below 100000 in the us would be a great achievement for him in. we'll return to that in just a moment but in the meantime we can cross live to the government daily press briefing given today by foreign secretary nominee. good afternoon welcome to downing street for today's coronavirus press briefing i'm joined by our chief scientific advisor valance and dr yvonne doyle medical director at public health england. before the subject provides an update on the latest data from our cobra occur coronavirus dashboard i just want to give you an update on the steps that we as a government have been taken to defeat corona virus. a step by step action plan is aiming to slow the spread of the virus so fewer people need hospital treatment and he won time thereby protecting the n.h.s.
12:17 pm
his capacity. at each point we've been following the scientific and medical advice and we've been very deliberate in our actions taking the right steps at the right moment. we're also taking unprecedented action to increase and h.s. capacity by dramatically expanding the numbers of beds key staff lifesaving equipment on the front line so that we give people the care they need when they need it most. that's why we're instructing people to stay at home so we can protect our n.h.s. and save lives. i can report that through the government's ongoing monitoring and testing program as of today 134946 people have now been tested for the virus 112805 have tested negative 22141 have tested positive. of those who have contracted the virus
12:18 pm
1408 have very sadly died. we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those of those who have passed away and i think those figures are a powerful reminder to us all of the importance of following the government's guidelines we must stay at home to protect our n.h.s. and save lives and i'd like to thank all of those involved on the frontline in particular all of those in the n.h.s. for their battle against this virus the amazing doctors the amazing nurses all the support staff working day and night the thousands of other key workers from our teachers to supermarket workers to a fantastic diplomatic network who are all as a team working around the clock to get us through this unprecedented coronavirus challenge. this is a united national effort and the spirit of selflessness shown by so many is an inspiration. i now want to turn to what we've been doing to support british people
12:19 pm
traveling around the world coronavirus hasn't just challenges at home is the greatest global challenge in a generation and as the countries work to secure their borders and stop with the spread of this deadly virus we appreciate that an unprecedented number of u.k. travelers are trying to get home and we're not talking a few 100 or even a few thousands we're talking about hundreds of thousands of people traveling around the world so with that in mind on the 17th of march we advise people against all non-essential traveled around the world and since the 23rd of march we've advised that all or u.k. residents who are currently traveling abroad should return home hundreds of thousands have already done so. but many travelers haven't yet managed to get back home from young backpackers to retard couples on cruises and we appreciate the difficult predicament that they find themselves in. we also recognize exactly the

anxiety of families here in the u.k. who are concerned to get their loved ones home it's a worrying sign for all of those who've been affected. and i want to reassure them that this government their government is working around the clock to support advice and to help british travelers get home i've spoken to more than 24 and ministers around the world in the last week will say to support this effort to keep airports and ports open and to facilitate access to them by british travelers. over the weekend i spoke to foreign ministers from a stranger new zealand india and brazil and pakistan and i also spoke to the ethiopian prime minister and in all of those cases urge them to what with this to compare to keep commercial routes flying. given the scale and complexity of this challenge inevitably requires a team effort. so the foreign office is working with other governments there's

a particular focus on transit hubs and we're also working with the airlines to keep as many flights running it's possible. we've got a lot more to do but we've already helped hundreds of thousands of britons get home . the 1st priority has been to keep as many commercial flights running as we can and that's based on just purely the scale and the number of people who want to come home and as a result of those efforts and the corporation received from the spanish government we've enabled nesta mated 150000 u.k. nationals to get back from spain. on other commercial routes they've come under pressure we work with partner governments and airlines to get back 8500 u.k. travelers from morocco around 5000 national from the foreign secretary dominic robb they're giving the government's daily press briefing the foreign secretary said that he understood the concerns of those trying to get back to the u.k.

and highlighted the work he was doing to bring people home and he also said the government was dramatically expanding n.h.s. capacity n.h.s. testing and reminded people to stay home as per the conditions of the meltdown. british for fighters will assist the public during the lock down and are ready to recover bodies if the crisis worsens as part of a joint national approach the emergency service will deploy for fighters to drive ambulances deliver essential items to the vulnerable and elderly and collect bodies in the event of mass casualties during the break the greenman between the fabricators union and foreign rescue ploys is set to last for 2 months but can be amended depending on demand we face a public health crisis and paralleled in our lifetimes the coronavirus outbreak is now a humanitarian emergency and firefighters rightly want to help their communities many
12:23 pm
fear the loss of life in this outbreak could be overwhelming and firefighters who often handle terrible situations and incidents are ready to step in to assist with body retrieval for more on this i'm now joined by a former firefighter lucy must suit lucy and hello to you thanks for joining us. this is this is a very grim subject matter isn't it of course but i'm sure far fighters would want to help out. oh absolutely the feedback i'm getting is overwhelmingly firefighters are happy to volunteer and do this and this is not the 1st time that volunteers half of them selves forward i mean we saw the reaction after the grenfell tower tragedy where firefighters across the country volunteered to assist the london fire brigade and also the community at renfro in any way they could very recently bill and you saw over 65 fighters from this country some of them retired traveling at their own expense to australia to help with the bushfires there and the emergency
12:24 pm
response operations going on there so of course firefighters across this country certainly in london whenever there is any kind of disaster they are more than willing to how certainly in a situation of the feedback i'm getting from friends of mine former colleagues is that they're desperate to help out in any way they count and part of that help will be of course dealing with bodies and of which have been infected with the virus that could be dangerous for personnel. certainly but of course as firefighters we put ourselves in the front line every single day we certainly put our lives at risk every single day when we go to work and we all used to unfortunately are used to dealing with dead bodies which we do quite often as firefighters within the brigade and many firefighters will have relatives and loved ones who work for the n.h.s. of course they don't want sir assist them in any way they can and of course most firefighters will also have the relatives who they're rethinking of at this time so
12:25 pm
yes there are risks in face of our fighters and what we must do is ensure that if we do volunteer in pass else forward which i'm sure thousands will that there is the proper protections in place for us we are given the correct p.p. and that we are protected in the event of injury so if there is a firefighter who is injured or infected because of the coronavirus that they will be protected and they will not be disciplined later on. on the line for going off set and of course crucially bill if we're taking a number of firefighters on way from fire stations and putting them places where they can help with this pandemic we need to make sure that fire cover is not negatively impacted because what we don't want to see is firefighters not able to attend to those fire emergencies now more so than ever were saying hundreds will see millions of people across the country who are at home 24 hours a day that their full gives the bigger rigs that there will be. fires in their
12:26 pm
household except truck so we really need our fire cover and to be as effective as ever a little early to say you want to make sure that the firefighters will be safe when they carry out these judi's but of course we are hearing of that health service work because they they don't have the right protective gear so how can you be confident the firefighters can go about their work and feel safe and protected. it is a concern and the answer to your question is at this point we can't be confident and this is something we need to put on the government the government have reached out to us and they've asked firefighters across the country to volunteer their services and and to help with this which of course we are more than willing to do but then the government needs to do their part and they need to make sure that not just firefighters but n.h.s. workers and it's worked with across the country are as safe as they can be of course when you do a job like firefighting when you work for emergency services you can never be 100 percent safe and we are willing to pass par lives on the line every single day but
12:27 pm
at the same time the government has to fulfill their duties to make sure we're not putting ourselves in harm's way whether it can be where it can be avoided again very briefly if you don't mind clearly extra training will be needed to take on these fresh challenges what will the service get it isn't just on. i mean it's a difficult one i mean time is of an essence i mean you know normally it's a become a firefight it takes you know 6 months pass a training we're in a situation it's completely unprecedented yes in an ideal world we would have been a farmer training we would have all of the we need however i think this is the most at sea we just need to get out there and do what we need to do this i must say thank you very much indeed and that's it for the most i'll be back with more news for you just over half an hour from now.
