really are especially who are chosen leaders really are like us congressman richard burr who in his position of senate intelligence committee chairman heard the news of the impending pandemic before the rest of us and chose to save his own ass set's while selling our physical and financial safety up the river or what about the united states department of justice who instead of seeking to help protect all of us is instead taking a page out of the bush administration's post $911.00 playbook and is looking to decimate our legal and constitutional rights under cover of national catastrophe politico is now reporting that according to recently uncovered documents submitted by the d.o.j. to congress that the justice department has proposed that congress grant the attorney general power to ask the chief judge of any district court to pause court proceedings whenever the district court is fully or partially closed by virtue of

any natural disaster civil disobedience or other emergency situation. as norman l. reimer executive director of the national association of criminal defense lawyers correctly notes that means you could be arrested and never brought before a judge until they decide that the emergency or the civil disobedience is in fact over and that decision my friends may never come as we've learned from the u.s. congress is continued obedience to reauthorizing the prising the patriot act and the national defense authorization act all read over and over again despite the emergencies that spawn them being long finished and over so as this international catastrophe continues to reveal the good from the bad and the ugly i think it's a good time to start watching the whole house. was nice. to see this.

twenty's at least to know you know gone through the 911 experience where. you have the patriot act and the national defense authorization act wait what's going on because usually during these crisis that's when people try to push through the most like constitutionally damaging stuff that they want to do for a while because ironically those are the times where fewer people are watching because of what everyone's off of $911.00 particularly with the patriot act and how much that mitt towards taking american security away and privacy now people are a lot more attentive so you're not going to be able to push things through as much under the curtain if you were able to do with 911 we're watching one more advocacy group speak out against this right now you're seeing people that are basically thing you should be worried about and trying to make sure we have enough hospital beds enough math we shouldn't be trying to roll back more rights for people we shouldn't be trying to take away what it means to be an american citizen no we shouldn't be i mean just to give you an idea of some of the things that they're trying to inform in the o.j. also congress not only about the kind of like well you know let us kind of

indefinitely hold people without charging them but as long as the emergency takes place which could be forever and the barman also asked congress to pause the statue of limitations for criminal investigations and civil proceedings. for at least a few for at least one year they also looked at changed the federal rules of criminal procedure when it comes to video conferencing hearings and to let those hearings happen without a defendant's consent meaning that like ok let's say if you want to you know if they're going to have any hearing in regards to a court case the defendant wouldn't have to have their consent in order for it to be done over video conferencing so on one hand you're like well you know conferencing hearings are smart idea in a time of virus but shouldn't the who is there to defend himself be able to say i want to be there live or over video conversely stuff some say it's pressure and they think the timing is problematic but it's also the fact that we're supposed to be in this new era of criminal justice reform and we're watching more and more of those reforms not looking very much like reforms at all when we're talking about

pushing through things like this that automatically turn turn every all of our prime. yes on its head when it comes to many people who are already incarcerated actually being able to not only have their day in court but have a day in court that is actually foundational to their constitutional rights and the least of it but also be protected from the virus too because we're also seeing that 2 words like well. exactly and my other question is what do you if you were to hold these people would you actually hold them our prisons in our jails are already overcrowded when we saw the part you know we saw what happened down in mississippi with parking prison them like what's happening down there that's already a mess i mean there's a 1000000 different things at work here and one of things that got under my skin the most and that really upset me was the fact that like you had senators congressman our president all knowing in advance all knowing in january all getting briefed over and over and over again and not really sounding an alarm and to what mid late february because he the president believed he could contain it and other

members of congress were so busy doing well one again election year trying to get somebody else to let be that they were on the democratic side but also just not paying this attention the but didn't start with didn't stop it presidential there was so many other levers that also ignored oh they were also they were also making a lot of money at the stock market to burn them 1700000 may say you got kelly loffler republican out of georgia 1300000 you got dianne feinstein in the mess so when stocks left and right they all knew and they all got busy on the stock market at the end of the day but again what i put you know the needs of the people above the needs of their pocketbooks. and you can see the group of them there that's just some of them were but accused of trading stocks. in what spurred what's to come with this virus. the novel coronavirus is touching every aspect of our lives stay at home orders have been issued in several places in addition to curfews pop up testing clinics social distancing mandates and the list

goes on and on for american workers it's layoffs into. collapse and wondering if they will be able to weather a storm that's beginning to raise the same types of fears we saw in the 2008 housing and economic crash trump desperately tried to take advantage of the economic gains obama's recovery act created and now it's 40 five's turn to work the economic magic of his own we've seen in the child administration ideas about a $1200.00 direct cash payment to americans but that just doesn't go far enough workers across the country have already lost their jobs and many more face unemployment is coping 19 ravages the u.s. force enclosures of restaurants bars schools and other areas of public life non-essential employment projections look bleak and the lasting effects could cripple states for example goldman sachs forecasts that the economy will contract by 2.5 percent over the 1st half of this year translation

a loss of $3000000.00 jobs by june bush bank and j.p. morgan actually see things a bit worse suggesting 7500000 jobs could be lost. the food hospitality and retail industries are poised to take the hardest hit affecting states like nevada florida and hawaii at high rates but according to a quirk by the economic policy institute all things are going to feel the pain california is positioned to lose over 600000 jobs while texas could lose 400000 my home state of illinois up to 200000 jobs this summer. the job loss knows no region and respects neither rule or urban areas because equal opportunity with the white house boiling every step of the way as they attempt to get a coronavirus recovery package together with house democrats and senate republicans in a power battle americans are left hanging in the balance governors mayors and other

local leaders will be tasked with not only fighting for their sake the qana me but developing policy plans to restructure after the colossal downfall and it's an election year and a lot is at stake but nothing matters more to voters than their pocketbooks can stay policy makers reduce job losses and mitigate harm and what measures can they take to lessen the blow. as that is one of the most important questions that we can ask ourselves right now. hurt like whatever everywhere i look you see the economic impact happening left and right you can escape but there's absolutely from the stay at home orders to the closures of certain businesses if you tell 2 the drivers of the american economy in many cases the small businesses that they can no longer operate or they are out for weeks at a time they will have cash reserves on hand there is no bailout waiting for them many of them are not going to be able to open their doors again and we're already looking at industries that were suffering before the corona virus outbreak with you're talking about the retail industry if you're talking about you know the

traditional hospitality industry all of those things were having their own they had their own bits of construction before coronavirus it and now this impact is something that many of them cannot weather it's it's brutal in that sense and that's come. the big question that snow over to you kind of are proposing which is is congress has anybody in our government really prepared to handle this economic crisis what it what it was we're talking about earlier today it's going to rival 08 if not if not go past what happened what we saw in 2008 absolutely and we know that this administration isn't necessarily equipped to handle a president since his inauguration has been running on the economy being great these numbers being amazing job loss not really being a thing of being out of that pressure section of 08 and him you know basically doing a nonstop campaign on how great the economy is doing now all of that is turned on its head in a year where he is fighting for his own life in terms of reelection this is something that a lot of people projected could be the turning point regardless of what his

approval numbers were if the economy was to take a major l. things were going to look different so i think there's a lot of fear there as well and the economy is taking a major l. and the sad thing is you see washington go lock step right away into what they know right ok pay off the big donors ok bail out this group bail out boeing bail out all these companies boeing was doing bad before their sever happened remember they have there was a 737. there was a bunch of companies now who are jumping in like disaster capitalism like we might be affected by this what steal some money from the american people would steal some money from the tax dollar taxpayers and get out get our big bailouts i think was a mark cuban actually said it best he said anyone who takes money from the government during this time of crisis should not be allowed to do any kind of start buybacks or you know feather ness of any executives whatsoever because we cannot allow that to happen as we saw in the aftermath of 2008 and it should have been an automatic given it should have taken mark cuban to say it but i think that that definitely was something that put a lot of elected leaders on alert as well so now they're including that in their

packages i think that there was something else interesting that came out this week earlier today actually congresswoman jodi she had some very interesting comments i think that we have the to me let's see this tweet oh my goodness. so she is going to go into business is closing unemployment soaring hysteria and fear of riches were her c.e.o.'s or boycotts and if that which is worse the illness or the i think that is the crux of the tweet and the issue here is that there are a lot of people particularly on the conservative side and the president as well right now who are looking at the fact that businesses are going to be threatening clothes and looking at a lot of the big business looking at you know the capitalist market there were set upon and looking at those jobless numbers we talked about they are willing to stop the 2 to stop the state at home borders they are willing to stop the social distancing because they don't feel that they can get the economy back on track should we do that though you also risk people literally dying in the streets. it's

an easy choice for me if it comes down to the economy or people dying in the streets i'm sorry i want to save the people dying in the streets because guess what you don't have an economy of people are dead. you can't ignore them because they were unable to understand you have this is this is not a this is not a 0 sum game you have to say people 1st you know we can develop all of these ideas about you know how to get our economy going again and hopefully our governors state legislators and others who are involved at a local level do have an understanding that they have to start making these policies now because they can't depend on the white house to do it this is an election year clearly they can't depend on a lot of people to do it they are the ones who they are their populations are going to be looking forward to to make some type of sense of all of this you sort of don't put don't put put put people over profits that's really what we have to do awesome awesome work as we're going to break remember that you can also start watching the hawks on the man through the brand new portable t.v. available in smartphones to google play on the up web store by searching portable

exactly is humanitarian intervention the encyclopedia brittanica yes that one defines it as actions undertaken by an organization organizations usually a state or a coalition of states that are intended to alleviate extensive human suffering within the borders of a sovereign state. but is that the truth labor and human rights lawyer baron cohen would believes there was a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to the rallying cry of humanitarian intervention and he joins us now to discuss his new book on the subject titled no more war how the west violates international law using humanitarian intervention to advance economic and strategic interest thank you for joining us today deb. hey thanks so much for adamy you ben as the title of your book suggests you know i want to ask you 1st what recent or or what good examples of this humanitarian intervention you know best exemplifies the misuse of phrase by the united states

what are some examples that we've seen recently. well i think the one that really stands out as libya. it's one will recall in 2011. to us artist pated that nato bombing of libya between march of 2011 and in october 2011. this was under the obama administration and the 3 people who really pushed this operation were stealthed anointed the man it turned interventionist and that was hillary clinton susan rice and samantha power samantha power famously writing a book saying that the u.s. had to be more active in stopping genocide around the world well but what happened 1st of all it turned out that the war was based on lies and all these wars are we weren't there to protect human rights and in fact emails that were leaked by week 2

weeks later showed internal discussions where they were in it there was no human rights crisis certainly by the time we were bombing libya. meanwhile in us lied about a number of arrangements for invading one of the law is the worst one. was to get off it was used in black merced and they are used from an african states. to kill those don't think well this turned out not to be true 1st of all i don't know why they had to be black but that with and for. but 2 it turned out there being black mercenaries who were african guest workers that could be invited to work. in libya these 2 are not mercenaries at all in fact amnesty international which initially had all disli were delayed or stayed there was no evidence of black mercenary this lie was important to come to things one that helped pave the way for

the intervention which destroyed it or not of civilian cities like stir which killed the house has to be but also this law and help. are on an anti african and it anti black sentiment military and so during and after the nato intervention you saw genocide against africa and s. workers african s. were killed and they will you change the entire black towns were to apia laded by the forces in us the warden and he and they have a just perfect in that these were allegedly black person areas meanwhile as we know on the streets to libya for the 1st time in memory african guest workers and other african brought into libya are being stalled on the streets before $100.00 of people just as slate this was the result of the humanitarian intervention

carried out by the u.s. under obama and encouraged by rb the remote famous humanitarian intervention is in the world. that's pretty incredible so it's a pretty incredible having stuff. when he manages areas it takes all the home turf . and then get well the go ahead sorry. you're no good how is the united states and others been able to circumvent the un tarter and other human rights laws against aggressive war by using the guise of humanitarian intervention. to guess what they say so 1st of all any war since 1945 to the creation of u.n. . charter. we have to remember that the u.n. charter was created to the un it was created after world war 2 in the sponsored a war would do and the main purpose of the u.n. charter was stopped aggressive war because this with the mystic greatest scorcher

against humanity and the greatest crime the nazis committed was a quest for. and so to get around that prescription against aggressive war and to get around the do to a girl who seeks security council authorization. to fight a war to us came up with this idea of humanitarian intervention and the idea you know. if we claim we're going to war to stop genocide or going to protect the rights of people against and it's danceable dictator. the u.n. says but that is it doesn't mean you authorization from security now. to do that the classic case of forced was to yugoslavia this was the 1st modern humanitarian intervention carried out by bill maher and it was carried out

without security council authorization. and clinton one of the big when he says he wanted to bomb. serbia which he did urge 78 days. was to show the world that dean us could do it and could do it without security company council authorization and that's what happened the u.s. did it along with other nato allies and their position was that doesn't change they can do whatever it wants to in supporting the rights but again in the case he was slavia again and what we saw were 2 things that nato itself carried out war crimes masked or right over 78 days of bombing which mostly focused on civilian targets. but also being human rights have been uses to. stir be there. that u.s. claim to want to stop actually i'll arrange it imparts box to the bombing. in fact

were spurred on by the bomb so that invasion again itself created humanitarian problems because again it focused largely on civilians it's going to be structured but also to curb the very human rights abuses it claimed to curb act if. it's but it's pretty incredible i want to ask you really quick going got about a minute left but are there any examples of you know humanitarian intervention conducted by the u.s. that actually was justified and didn't have all turned their motives of what profiteering and all the other things you mentioned earlier is there any in the last 2030 years that you can think of the none. of the $28.00 there are 3 any. 2 well established or well except that examples of humanitarian intervention in the past decades none of them were

carried out out by the united states that's truly incredible but i'm not about god to actually measure. vietnam which invaded cambodia and got rid of pol pot. which very few people go. into. when they plan into east pakistan now bangladesh. action in britain and it up doing a lot to stop the extreme slaughter. in bangladesh and. china and so nina. rid. of to take changer in uganda eating meat well i'm sure it's all human rights experts agree with those who are sometimes if you have a charity intervention not only cared about out by the us down which carried out by the last little while i would add if i got in that was that shouldn't stop the african child get rid of our growth in mandela nelson mandela greece now. well we
