hello there i'm a military man you're watching in question broadcasting live from r.t. american national headquarters in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from across the nation and all around the world. our top story today cope at 19 and how it continues to impact the american economy the unemployment rate is estimated now at about 13 percent hitting its highest level since the great depression so as the virus is forcing stores restaurants and
2:01 pm
other non-essential businesses to shut their doors a record number of people have filed for unemployment the labor department reported a staggering 10000000 people filing for unemployment insurance in just the past 2 weeks that means almost all the jobs that were gained in the last 5 years just vanished let's take a look at the most hard hit states the highest number of unemployment claims the files were coming in from california at 870000 over on this side in new york those claims total about $360000.00 now economists believe that the end of this crisis is not anywhere near the at and as the numbers are expected to continue to climb it's estimated that about $20000000.00 people will lose their jobs in the coming weeks but there is an increasing concern about how it's impacting low income and minority communities and whether it will lead to an even deeper divide between the haves and have nots so. more on this let's go to our tease rachel blevins she is live in the
2:02 pm
news room with more to this rachel well manila as the dust related to the corona virus have soared past a lot of an 1000 in the united states early data is confirming the fear that minority communities are being hit the hardest when a new death related decoded 19 is reported in the u.s. the information given typically includes the age and gender of the deceased but the victim's race and income status also play a key role and the latest data really shows an alarming trend in which minorities and specifically african-americans are being impacted by the virus in cook county the 2nd most populated county in the u.s. african-americans make up 23 percent of the population but 58 percent of the coded 1000 deaths in the city of chicago african-americans make up just 29 percent of the population and 70 percent of the coban 1000 deaths 81 percent of those individuals had underlying health conditions such as hypertension high blood pressure or
2:03 pm
diabetes similar statistics have emerged in michigan and north carolina 2 of the few states publishing statistics that include race and in wisconsin reports are now revealing that african-americans make up almost half of milwaukee county's $945.00 cases and 81 percent of its $27.00 despite the fact that the population is just 26 percent black there are concerns or cross the board for low income and minority populations in the united states as unemployment numbers continue to skyrocket by the we have levels the country hasn't seen since the great depression for those who are able to keep their jobs they are finding themselves on the front lines in the food and service industries with an increased risk of exposure to the virus a combination of low wages and lack of access to health care could make a coven 19 diagnosis devastating as a survey from the federal reserve found that almost 40 percent of american adults don't have $400.00 in cash. savings or credit to cover an emergency but even though
2:04 pm
president trump recently signed the largest economic stimulus bill in u.s. history which congress touted as holding the answers to concerns about health care and unemployment benefits many have warned that it does much more for big corporations and for the average american human rights watch criticized the bill noting that while sick leave is included companies with more than $500.00 employees are exempt and a report the organization went on to note low income communities are more likely to be exposed to the virus have higher mortality rates and suffer economically as a result in times of economic crisis these vulnerabilities will be more pronounced for marginal groups with nearly half of the u.s. population classified as either boeing come or poor the concern of how the coronavirus pandemic will further cement the divide between the haves and the have nots is starting to become a reality reporting in the newsroom. a leaked memos
2:05 pm
from amazon corporate officials reveal a plan to discredit some fired workers these are those employees who have been protesting working conditions amid the coronavirus outbreak with a closer look at how the workers' claims and what's being done to keep them safe here's our t. correspondent natasha. top amazon officials are at odds with employees who are protesting working conditions and now a leaked memo from a meeting with c.e.o. jeff bezos himself along with others who make up corporate revealed specifics about a worker named christian smalls in a leaked memo and amazon general counsel reportedly called him quote not smart or to kill it and reportedly wanted to use him as part of a p.r. strategy to make him the face of the entire union organizing movement it's no secret that amazon has resisted efforts of organized labor for years smalls was let go last week after leading colleagues in a lunch hour protest in staten island new york over the company's response to the pandemic we don't have don't buy the deputy sheriff. it's dark crystal yeah you
2:06 pm
don't look like you're born you're down like we started this and walked it is strong but we're told by senior he sees their deeds but we call the c.d.c. to get downstairs but amazon says small's was fired for violating a company policy of a 14 day quarantine period after coming into contact with an employee who tested positive for the virus when specifically asked about the memo david's billow ski amazon's general counsel said that his comments were quote personal and emotional and a statement he says i was frustrated and upset that an amazon employee would endanger the health and safety of other amazonian but repeatedly returning to the premises after having been warned to quarantine himself after exposure to virus cove at 19 i let my emotions draft my words and get the better of me but smalls doesn't stand alone in this fight workers in detroit michigan held a similar protest questioning the safety of their working conditions we need a job base those who take action known by jeff bezos a visit his facility to do something about the people coughing and sneezing as
2:07 pm
you're walking and it's just something needs to be done i stand for everybody here beside me and i want these he does he want to be shut down immediately professional cleaning all we want for them lewis said the good enough for 2 weeks with pay what it's like a deep cleaning bill and despite amazon's general counsel claiming they're brainstorming ideas on how to beat the chrono virus according to protesters the facilities are not abiding by the center for disease control interventions guidelines for coping 1000 safety standards you're not really doing social distancing there's about part is extended people in a building on a daily basis sometimes and some areas we are shoulder to shoulder. ok be 6 feet away while the staten island facility remains open despite an employee testing positive for the corona virus small says he's writing governor andrew cuomo hoping he'll shut it down for an extensive cleaning reporting in los angeles natasha's sweet r.t. . it's rare to see the u.s.

government step in and tell big private companies how to treat their customers until now federal officials threw down the hammer on all u.s. airlines telling them to refund their customers especially after airlines were given nearly $60000000000.00 in the coronavirus aid package are different from jack is taking a deeper dive into this than the european commission to about a day later they told airliners across europe to do the same right exactly manila because of the coronavirus flight cancellations now outweigh the number of people actually booking flights and worldwide airlines almost $35000000000.00 in refunds and almost all of them have just been giving their customers vouchers and like you mentioned with the u.s. airlines getting a big chunk of the coronavirus aid package surprisingly the bailout will have these companies barely breaking even so let's look at the breakdown here yes again airlines were given about $60000000000.00 but only $25000000000.00 is actually going to passenger airlines which all will be divided up so you're looking at almost $2000000000.00 airline now the money is only to be used to keep their
2:09 pm
employees working through september and not putting any employee on furlough now to see exactly what airlines are dealing with when it comes to getting refunds we have jet blue as an example who released their numbers and march of last year you're looking at $22000000.00 a day in ticket sales march of this year only $4000000.00 and now in april they're only making about a $1000000.00 per day and how much do they owe its customers and refunds $2000000.00 per day so airlines have been doing all they can including making some dodgy moves to preserve cash like changing their return policies over and over again putting in loopholes as to what flights actually can get refunded even delaying refunds for up to a year you also have some of its bosses for going their paycheck like united airlines c.e.o. and president and the c.e.o. of southwest airlines saying that he'll take a 7 percent pay cut but you can see all of them make well over $5000000.00 a year so after getting more than $600.00 customer complaints the department of transfer. station ordered airlines to refund their customers if
2:10 pm
a flight is canceled or significantly delayed which also applies to government restrictions that will prohibit flying airlines have cut down drastically on the number of flights per day like american airlines with many of the airlines suspending service to new york which as we know is a major coronavirus hotspot airlines have also cut down their schedules and now middle a typical passenger airliner has about one in 10 seats filled in fair and just this morning because of all of this and many customers are are obviously really angry a customer is actually suing united airlines how's that going to work out middle it's actually a class action lawsuit it's a real david and goliath moment here for united and this could be the start unfortunately too many lawsuits against these airlines adding them even more debt now the man suing jacob rudolph he's a minnesota cop who says that he paid more than $1500.00 back in january for 3 plane tickets and even after the department of transportation reminded airlines
2:11 pm
that they had to refund its customers rudolph says that they still didn't pay and only gave him travel credit within a year of the original travel date now a spokesperson for united airlines declined to comment on the lawsuit except saying that united is proud of the role and company employees are playing during this crisis and they continue to operate in nearly every domestic destination reporting in washington fair and fronsac r.t. . and elsewhere around the world japan has declared a month long state of emergency in tokyo and 5 other prefectures that continue to see the number of infections rise prime minister shinzo abbay has requested residents to stay at home and a practice social distancing this as the total confirmed cases there are nearly $4000.00 japan is also set to roll out a trillion dollar stimulus package to protect their economy. and over to israel where a complete nationwide lockdown has been ordered during passover to control the outbreak there prime minister benjamin netanyahu has already. restricted movement prior to
2:12 pm
the lockdown only allowing people to leave their homes to buy food or do other essential activities the lockdown would go into effect on tuesday afternoon and friday morning. and california is sending 500 state owned ventilators to other states and territory struggling to contain the corona virus outbreak the medical equipment is being shipped out to me about maryland delaware d.c. the northern mariana islands and oregon and washington state also stepped in to send ventilators to the national stockpile. l. speaking of ventilators take a look at this tesla shows off a bene later made out of electrical car parts their goal was to create a ventilator to help the medical industry without taking away more of their supplies so instead they used parts from their model three's display and infotainment system tesla along with general motors and ford have signed on to manufacture ventilators during this pandemic. british prime minister boris johnson

is now receiving oxygen support in intensive care meanwhile questions are circulating as to who is going to govern while he's away or to discuss the later and forth h.q. rejoining him shares shocking updates regarding the future us 249 will be right back. join me every thursday on the alex salmond show and i'll be speaking to guest of the world of politics sports business i'm showbusiness i'll see if that. is your media a reflection of reality. in

. world leaders sending their well wishes thoughts and prayers pouring in from across the globe as british prime minister boris johnson lay in a london intensive care unit meanwhile as some heads of state look at mr johnson as
2:16 pm
a precautionary tale others are shirking the threat of coronavirus entirely here to weigh in on all of this former u.k. m.p. george galloway george 1st ken what can you tell us of boris johnson's condition his office says he's using an oxygen tube but not of the ventilator can we believe those updates coming from his press office. well when is an oxygen tube not a ventilator that would be my 1st question personally i've never heard of an oxygen tube and if he's in the intensive care unit which belatedly the british government conceded in public that he was having earlier described this as russian edition formation which 5 hours late are they confirmed to be the truth if he's in intensive care why is he in intensive care if he isn't suffering from pneumonia and isn't on a ventilator and of course this is symbolically important because once you're on
2:17 pm
a ventilator well the chances of you pulling out of it alive are really dangerously small something like 8020 of the people who go on to a ventilator come are alive only 20 out of $100.00 so it's very watering indeed not least for his pregnant partner county simons who is extensively pregnant i think 6 months pregnant and herself has the coronavirus but also has wide our family friends and of course not least the country because he was elected to lead the country and now politically cannot do so from a hospital bed still less if he is in a ventilator saw there's a state of confusion as i told you yesterday there's also
2:18 pm
a discount on government sources tell the public because having you know what it's like in life once you've caught someone out lying to you you're unlikely to wholeheartedly believe them next time even if they are telling you the truth and that's right there is always a little bit of skepticism when you hear whatever they say but george we know that a lot of people are not. happy then that dominic rab was deputized by the prime minister to be his agent while he's unable to perform his duties so how long can this go on and what is the concern against having mr rabb play prime minister for the time being. well on the last point 1st he is a new boy he has 12 months only of cabinet experience there are others in the cabinet with vastly more experience than and there are people in the cabinet been in the cabinet for a decade he's been in for 12 months is an unprepossessing character if i can put it
2:19 pm
kindly he does not convey any kind of style of leadership or of authority is a bit robotic a bit of an automaton a speak your weight machine and again there are other people in the cabinet much better communication than him the chancellor of the exchequer is also a new boy but much better as a communicator but there are others and it's strange actually that he has had the baton passed to him i can only assume maybe i'm being unkind it's because he's no threat to the prime minister's position nobody can see him as the elected prime minister nobody can see him as the elected leader of the governing party but just being might be why he got the gig but questions arise because he's now officially you see the deputy prime minister we have not so whose finger on the trigger for
2:20 pm
example god forbid if anyone had to reach for the nuclear button who would it be it wouldn't be heaven he has no authority to do that he has authority to troops on the street but he doesn't have the power to sack other members of the cabinet you see what i'm saying here there's a lot of confusion total lack of clarity because we don't have the systems in place to make these kind of transitions easy. fascinating like here in the us we know it's the president the vice president and then speaker who is next in line so there are a few people in queue and you don't have such a system then in parliament. no wow there's lord as it may to vote. but dominic rob is the man that was there when the music store in the game of musical chairs he got the gig. you know whatever our

differences with boris johnson of virtually everyone in britain is hoping that he who he's young with children with another child on the with it would be absolutely heartbreaking if he didn't come out the other end of this would be quite a major tragedy after such a tumultuous 2 years to get him in that seat and lastly george boris johnson is not the 1st big name in government to contract covert 19 to fall ill weeks before we know justin trudeau of canada he took the precautionary step of self isolation after his wife became ill with corona virus us senator rand paul tested positive prince charles prince albert of monaco yet there are others who are kind of in denial of the virus such as brazil's j. or boston or oh what do you say to those who are shirking the realities of this disease george and how could this virus potentially reshape geopolitics as we know
2:22 pm
it. well it's the bin of my life at the moment a confluence of libertarians and ultra left wing people who've turned out to be flat out of course they deny the thing that they see in front of their eyes they know they hear that the neighbors their relatives people young and old with underlying conditions or without a woman died in labor yesterday in england the baby was saved and the mother died they can see all this yet they are still claiming this is some kind of hole go up by i don't know bill gates or or george soros or they're always looking for jewish people so quite often ross child has a name does being under the hedge rule is really revolting actually and is beginning to make me very angry indeed i do think that the geopolitics will change
2:23 pm
on for ever after this apart from anything else capitalism globalized capitalism which transcends badass and is more powerful than any national government is a dangerous thing for our health and we've got to recover national sovereignty and some control over our product of our our lives when i have start on your show that 40 percent of all americans don't have $400.00 in cash in the bank or in credit yeah to me an american say wants to handful of people or no more wealth than half the people on the earth that's not a system that can be allowed to continue it's dangerous interesting that a virus that we can't see might change the whole world george will leave it right there george galloway live and i love and i believe if they kill. yes.

all right let's. and over to the sports h.q. with regina hamm most sports are trying to figure out what the next steps are but it seems that u.f.c. isn't really having the same issues it's pretty much 2 sides of the same coin because you see arguably is the most highly anticipated fight of the season as far it found self impacted by the current of ours but you have the present dana white is still pushing ahead and believes he may have found a pretty creative solution his problem in a tweet seems the sports and e.s.p.n. white put forth the pretty bold idea saying i'm a day or 2 away from securing a private island and will be able to get international fighters all of them into the u.s. so i have a private island i'm going to start flying them all into the private island and doing international flights there the flight was originally scheduled to be held on april 18th the barclays center in brooklyn new york but restriction the public gatherings in the state forced way to find a new venue it was highly anticipated made off and 20 ferguson for the interim
2:25 pm
lightweight title confirmed he is unable to travel due to coronavirus really travel bans and their meeting absolutely seems cursed at this point it's the 5th time the same to be versus ferguson has failed to actually make it to the octagon she's the main carter announced monday with a full slate of bouts with ferguson now facing off against number 4 ranked just engage she while actual occasion is still to be revealed why promises that he'll start holding more u. of c. events frequently over the next 2 months. and many sports are still scrambling what to do next and get their seasons off the ground major league baseball though they seem to find some headway as legal socials might have found a way to start as early as may these officials are increasingly focusing on a plan that would allow them to start the season in just a few weeks arizona is tapped as a potential ground for the games to take place and the ideas embrace by emily and the players association as well as federal health officials concern for the plan though include mental health during player isolation and some believe there are just too many roadblocks to overcome to start the season in may rules for playing
2:26 pm
are strictly laid out and that includes 30 teams playing in the greatest. no fans chase field with the arizona diamondbacks play they will have had other spring training facilities nearby for possibilities for hosting players coaching staff and other essential personnel with live in isolation only traveling back to and from the stadiums no family interactions so it is supported by the c.d.c. and the national institute of health president chimed in over the weekend after speaking with heads of many of the country's top officials including l.b. commissioner rob manfred players are actually considered low risk for contracting kovan $1000.00 due to their age and health but they can start certain stand that officials and others in operations could contract the virus and militarily interesting that's a pretty bold claim that we're looking at maybe made for baseball i mean you're about a month after opening day should have it anyway but that's not something people are looking for i know sports is that uniting factor but you're bringing in a lot of other risk factors by trying to keep everybody wants i don't buy it one
2:27 pm
second it's wishful thinking it's not going to happen it's too risky for everybody too risky for the players too risky for the people that have to clean up after the players i don't think it's really going to happen and i would love for it to go on but i doubt it not going to media as well like you still have to broadcast news days so you have a whole other fact i mean it's just it's worse i agree with you it's totally wishful thinking maybe they can find a pro private island like you know dana white did much of that sport either but art will be right there richard hamm thank you for that and don't go anywhere because we are back to back in 3 pm with a lot more news for you we'll have more on the fed stepping in to make airlines a refund passengers who were forced to cancel because of coronavirus and then congress prepares for a 2nd rescue package after it's become clear that the u.s. economy isn't looking to open up anytime soon we've got all that and more coming up at 3 pm so that's it for right now make sure you keep up with everything in question at all times by downloading our brand new free app called global t.v. you want to watch 7 catch up on all the news you might have missed you follow me on

2:29 pm
that is i had this horrible autoimmune disorder growing up and it turns out it was completely alleviated with very drastic dietary measures and i went to a number of doctors to discuss what happened to me and i was basically laughed at like diet has nothing to do with our meanest orders so my suggestion to people who have health issues they can't figure out if they're going to see a medical professional and they've been going for 10 years and they're still on the same place they should probably take it upon themselves to start testing things out testing out diet testing out exercise and try and figure out things on their own. as we head into the big singularity it's the single most important thing that ever happened to humanity sometimes the creation or invention or just fire. this charge of a new test or should get the u.s.
