3:00 pm
hello there i'm a military man you're watching in question broadcasting live from our to american national headquarters in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from all across the nation and all around the world . our top story today coated 19 and how major u.s. airlines are coming under fire by the federal government now chances are you might be one of the many americans who were looking to travel even perhaps bought tickets in advance only to find out that you were stuck with another voucher we're told
3:01 pm
you'll be credited for the next time you fly so as a result of the pandemic airlines have had to cancel hundreds of flights every single day and in fact the t.s.a. has reported that as of this past sunday only 122000 passengers were screened through all u.s. airport security checkpoints and that's compared to 2400000 last year on the same date now the number of operating commercial flights down significantly a whopping 95 percent so what's no surprise that as airline companies continue hemorrhaging money passengers are seeking a refund for those canceled flights that were initially denied any cash back so that's why the department of transportation reached and demanded out to the airlines that they comply with passenger requests and give them back their money so it's a rare step to see the government step in and tell big private companies how to treat customers until now and. is this the new normal so are to your parent project has
3:02 pm
been taking a deeper dive into all of this apparent the european commission later told the european airlines to do the same thing right that's right manila because of because of the coronavirus more people actually are canceling flights rather than booking them like you said worldwide airlines they all almost $35000000000.00 with a b $1000000000.00 in refunds and almost all of them have just been giving their customers vouchers and like you mentioned u.s. airlines they're getting a big chunk of the coronavirus aid package but surprisingly the bailout will have these companies barely breaking even so let's look at the breakdown here now yes airlines they were given $60000000000.00 from that package but only $25000000000.00 is actually going to passenger airlines which that's going to be divided up between each company so it's at almost $2000000000.00 per airline now that money can only be used to keep their employees working through september and not putting any employee on furlough now to see exactly what airlines are dealing with when it comes to getting refunds we have jet blue as an example who released their numbers
3:03 pm
in march of last year you're looking at $22000000.00 a day and ticket sales march this year only $4000000.00 now in april only making about a $1000000.00 per day and how much do they owe customers in refunds $2000000.00 per day so airlines have been doing all they can including making some pretty dodgy moves to preserve cash like changing their return policies over and over again putting loopholes as to what flights actually can get refunded and even delaying refunds for up to a year that you do have some of the bosses for actually forging their paychecks like united airlines c.e.o. and president and the c.e.o. of southwest airlines says that he'll take a 7 percent pay cut but look at the numbers there they're always making well over $5000000.00 a year so after getting more than $1600.00 customer complaints the department of transportation they order airlines to refund their customers if a flight is canceled or significantly delayed which also does apply to government restrictions that will prohibit flying airlines have cut down drastically the number of flights per day like american airlines. with many of the airlines also
3:04 pm
suspending service to new york which as we know is a major coronavirus hotspot airlines have also cut down their schedules and the typical passenger airline airliner now has about one in 10 seats filled manila and so fair it obviously a lot of people are upset about all of this and rightfully so but one customer is taking it to the next level right and just doing united airlines yeah he has filed a class action lawsuit you know it's a real david and goliath moment here for united and this actually could be the start of many more lawsuits against these airline companies adding even more debt to that now the man suing jacob rudolph he is a minnesota police officer who says that he paid more than $1500.00 back in january for 3 plane tickets and even after the department of transportation reminded airlines that they have to refund its customers rudolph says they still didn't pay and only gave him travel credit within a year of the original travel date now a spokesperson for united airlines declined to comment on this lawsuit except she said that united is proud of the role and the company and the employees play during

this crisis and they are going to continue to operate in nearly every domestic destination reporting in washington fair and fronsac. all right you might call this the cares act part 2 now congress is now looking at a 2nd stimulus package meant to help businesses and workers impacted by the coronavirus shutdowns now this is in addition to be over 2 trillion dollar stimulus which were approved back on march 28th joining us to discuss this investigative journalist and boom bust co-host ben swan so ben what do we know about what's inside this cares act do. well it's being developed right now there's a couple of things i'll get to that in the 2nd but let me just say this because there is some breaking news on this bill the. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell just came out this afternoon saying this that the additional amount of money needs to be put into the current care. that is 2 trillion stimulus dollars
3:06 pm
remember the cares i could self is divided into pieces $500000000000.00 is supposed to go to helping big businesses about $350000000000.00 will help small businesses and they'll be checks sent to individuals right remember all that well the $350000000000.00 part of it that goes to small businesses mcconnell came out just a few hours ago and said that that amount needs to be increased immediately so apart from this kind of 2nd version of the stimulus we know that the senate is already pushing very hard to get more money into the small business part of it as for who else would be included this time around in the cares to if you want to call it that legislation that includes farmers extending unemployment benefits and getting additional direct checks to american families all right now now let's backtrack here to that breaking news you just gave us and i don't want to farhad because we don't really know how the cares one is working out right we don't we have we have very few numbers in fact president obama supposed to be speaking on
3:07 pm
that this afternoon and that we talking about how it's going so far we do have some insight from white house economic adviser larry kudlow who says about 38000000000 dollars worth of loans has already been applied for remember the cares act essentially allows small businesses to go in and request loans that ultimately can be mostly forgiven if you use them for utilities to pay salaries over the course of $2.00 and a half months and also to cover mortgage or rent for your business most of that about 90 percent of it will probably be forgiven as a loan if you use it properly there's also a clause in there that essentially says i'm learning more about this now that you can also apply for loans right now from the s.b.a. normally the s.b.a. cuts offloads at 350000 they have extended those to $1000000.00 for a business and those would have a low interest rate on them they would have to be paid back but they have a low interest rate so what we know is that about you know several 1000 businesses have already applied for this and about 38000000000 is being doled out already but there are so many. business is being affected right now manila but you have to look
3:08 pm
at it and say you know how how can 2 trillion dollars possibly cover all those businesses and all those losses just you know and then one note here on the s.b.a. i don't know if it's what i'm saying on my instagram i don't know if you're seeing it on yours but when you log in there's an ad at the top of instagram talking about the s.b.a. loans and asking me if i need to apply for it i mean what's up with that so so so facebook is doing this instagram is doing that if you log on to your bank right now all banks are putting this up and the reason for that is because here's how it works the carriers act is now is being funded by the federal government it's being run through the s.b.a. so you apply to the s.b.a. but you don't apply directly to the s.b.a. you actually apply to a local bank the local bank then runs it up through the s.b.a. to get you approved and then it's paid out by the feds so there's multiple layers in that that's why you're seeing it in so many places right now it's really just everywhere and then once everyone we know that there have already been 3 stimulus
3:09 pm
bills that have been signed into law cares act is obviously the biggest well known one why would another stimulus bill be necessary i mean is it just what mitch mcconnell pointed out. well i think that's part of it and part of it is that you have to remember that there's going to be criticism no matter what you do there's going to be criticism but one of the i think fair criticisms is going to be that $500000000000.00 is going to corporations and how much money is actually going to individuals for these stimulus checks so that's a big question right now so $1.00 of the things that i think lawmakers are trying to do is get out quickly ahead of it and say we recognize number one unemployment claims much higher they had than they had anticipated we're talking about 10000000 claims in just 2 weeks we'll probably have another 3 to 6000000 people this week who will sign up for unemployment benefits remember unemployment doesn't mean that you're out of a job it just means you have 0 hours so you have tens of millions of people who are saying i can't work right now i need a check immediately and i think that that's what you're seeing the feds trying to respond to right now and goldman sachs lastly is saying that this bill may actually
3:10 pm
see more political friction than the other ones why do you think that is. very quickly i think the reason for that is because lawmakers in theory have more time to think about this one thing lawmakers are not doing under the under the guise of an emergency they're talking about using enormous amounts of money $2.00 trillion dollars is about half of the entire federal budget they passed it like that now we're turning around and same will maybe we need to do it again so what are we talking about for 610 trillion dollars how much debt are we creating and are we setting ourselves up for massive massive inflation those are questions lawmakers are going to need to wrestle with rather than just passing everything under the guise of an emergency and swung at the credit virus and date death thank you for that update you got it. right millions of unemployment claims have hit the labor department after many are furloughed fired or simply just had their hours cut due to the pandemic but economists believe we are far from the end of this economic crisis as those numbers are expected to continue to climb so it's expected
3:11 pm
about 20000000 people will lose their jobs in the coming weeks but now there's increasing concern about how it's actually impacting low income and minority communities and whether it'll just lead to an even deeper divide between the haves and the have nots so for more on this we'll go to rachel evans live in the newsroom for us rachel well no as a death related to the coronavirus have sort past 11000 in the united states early data is confirming the fear that minority communities are being hit the hardest when a new death related to kovan one teen is reported in the u.s. the information given typically includes the age and gender of the deceased but the victim's race and income status also play a key role and the latest data release shows an alarming trend in which minorities and specifically african-americans are being impacted by the virus in cook county the 2nd most populated county in the u.s. african-americans make up 23 percent of the population but 58 percent of the coded
3:12 pm
1900 s. and the city of chicago african-americans make up just 29 percent of the population and 70 percent of the coven 1000 deaths at least 81 percent of these individuals had underlying conditions such as hypertension high blood pressure or diabetes similar says a 6 have emerged in michigan and north carolina 2 of the state's publishing says just 6 that include race and in wisconsin reports are now revealing that african-americans make up almost half of milwaukee county's $945.00 cases and 81 percent of its $27.00 does despite the fact that the population is just 26 percent black there are concerns across the board for low income and minority populations in the united. today's unemployment numbers continue to skyrocket by the week at levels the country hasn't seen since the great depression for those who are able to keep their jobs they are finding themselves on the front lines in the food and service industries with an increased risk of exposure to the virus
3:13 pm
a combination of low wages and a lack of access to health care could make a covert 19 diagnosis devastating as a survey from the federal reserve found that almost 40 percent of american adults don't have $400.00 in cash savings or credit to cover an emergency but even though president trump recently signed the largest economic stimulus bill in u.s. history which congress touted as holding the answers to concerns about health care and unemployment benefits many have warned that it does much more for big corporations and for the average american human rights watch criticize the bill noting that while sick leave is included companies with more than $500.00 employees are exempt and a report the organization went on to note that low income communities are more likely to be exposed to the virus have higher mortality 1 rates and suffer economically as a result in times of economic crisis these vulnerabilities will be more pronounced for marginal groups with nearly half of the u.s. population classified as either
3:14 pm
a low income or poor the concern of how the coronavirus pandemic will further cement the divide between the haves and the have nots is starting to become a reality reporting in the newsroom rachel blah vns archie. you know wisconsin marching on with their primary elections thanks to an order from the state's supreme court we're going to discuss that and then later in force regina hamm brings us a masters edition of major events that happened on this day in sports history will be right back. lead.

what is the difference between embarrassing gaffes in elder abuse joe biden certainly excels at the former and maybe is the victim of the latter we are told mention of mental health is off limits to what degree is the public the right to know. i don't trust medical authority at all ever and the reason for that is i had this horrible autoimmune disorder growing up and it turns out it was completely alleviated with
3:16 pm
very drastic dietary measures and i went to a number of doctors to discuss what happened to me and i was basically laughed at like diet has nothing to do with autoimmune disorders so my suggestion to people who have health issues they can't figure out if they're going to see a medical professional and they've been going for 10 years and they're still in the same place they should probably take it upon themselves to start testing things out testing out diet testing out exercise and try and figure out things on their own. my.
3:17 pm
well it's election day in wisconsin polls are open on a most unusual turn of events over the last 48 hours that's because on monday gov tony even tried to stop in person voting with an executive order but then the state supreme court ruled it has to go on as planned so now cities have consolidated the number of polling sites due to a shortage of workers willing to interact with the public because of the coronavirus so precincts are down from 180 to just 5 for the entire state so in addition 2500 national guard troops guard troops have been called to staff these limited polling sites so joining us to discuss what's happening in america's dairyland artie's scott e-mail who's host of news views hughes all right scottie this is you know you're you're seeing here every state who had primaries or elections have already moved their dates why is wisconsin still holding their election today. mel you are correct as 15 states have moved their primaries to the
3:18 pm
coronavirus however the debate on whether to move the wisconsin primary has become so intense it's going all the way up to the supreme court were just late last night united states supreme court upheld with a 5 to 4 ruling upheld the state supreme court of wisconsin's decision to not allow an extension of the absentee votes by a week now earlier yesterday as you mentioned in your tas democrat governor tony ever issued an executive order postponing the election for 2 months or that was almost immediately struck down by the state supreme court saying guess what governor you don't have the authority to postpone election especially the day before so it was maybe a little short notice now it's got a $77.00 delegates are up for grabs today but the democrat presidential race is not the only race on that ballot what else is there well that's the thing everybody obviously is still trying to figure out who's going to be the nominee on the
3:19 pm
democrat ticket and that's very important but there's actually a big race that's right now motivating a lot of people to the polls and that is actually the supreme court race for president trump even just the last 24 hours not once but twice treated in a doors meant for a state supreme court judge who's an incumbent which is very rare for him to do the main reason why this is some part of the d.n.c. is going to be held later on this summer in milwaukee so this is very important on several different levels of elected officials that are looking at wisconsin and how it turns out so there's always a reason right and it's got to how are are the wisconsin voters responding today at the polls i mean are they scared because of coronavirus are they still showing up. well that's the thing since the very beginning because they open this morning there's been a long long line cell lines have been long because it's narrowed down from 180 precincts to 5 across the state the size of wisconsin and 2500 national guard troops have been brought in because they couldn't find poll workers to staff these
3:20 pm
poll locations now there were 1300000 absentee ballots as of monday that had been requested only 57 percent of those had been returned and we still don't know where those 539000 ballots when they will be returned however they have to be postmarked by today manila for them to count so the truth is the only thing that we do know is there's probably a good chance we're not going to know the winner of any of the elections or those delegates by the close of the polls tonight i can imagine so and scotty you know there's been a lot of talk about how coronavirus is really impacting minority groups and poor communities i mean there are a lot of poor communities in wisconsin as well in wisconsin is very spread out anyone that's been there and it's a very vast state so could coronavirus be impacting ethnic voters in wisconsin as well given that 180 polling places down to just 5 there's a lot of these people that are that are in poor communities that don't have
3:21 pm
a means to get their. well obviously manila that was one of the concerns even before the events of the last week in fact there were 4 federal lawsuits filed saying that we need to extend the absentee availability the problem with this is obviously to get an absentee ballot you had to request it mainly on line and a lot of people don't have access to the internet so that was the main concern so yes there's a lot of worry right now that latino voters as well as african-americans in these communities were not going to get the absentee ballots hence why today a lot of those long lines that are standing 6 feet apart are filled with minorities because this is their only option and they want to make their vote count so the vote still continuing today we have to bring you a date to it but like i said it might not be a week monella before we know where those 77 delegates are all and in a race between bernie and joe biden every vote counts especially when it comes to those delegates you know it's got to i just got to say at this time you can blame the coronavirus and not russia maybe. you can blame
3:22 pm
