country want to talk about that and more all right it's time to boost your news i q . opec and their allied oil producers held a virtual meeting today seeking an agreement on oil production cuts in response to a slowdown triggered by the coronavirus pandemic but can all the key players make a deal that will actually last r.t.s. rachel blevins has been following this story and the high level meetings taking place she's joining us now from the news room with more of the details so rachel what's going on while manila the price war between russia and saudi arabia appears to have reached a cease fire as 2 of the world's largest oil producer seem to have reached a historic deal on thursday now this according to reports that saudi arabia agreed to remove 4000000 barrels of oil. a day from its april production levels while
2:02 pm
russia has agreed to cut 2000000 barrels a day the deal was made during a virtual meeting between opec members and other alloy oil producers amid a need to respond to the drop in demand from the ongoing lock down over the coronavirus pandemic as a result global oil demand has dropped by an estimated 30 percent resulting in the push to decrease the market's oil supply by around 20000000 barrels per day while russia and saudi arabia have indicated their willingness to cut oil production they have also said that a deal would depend on whether the u.s. agrees to join but despite ongoing talks with the saudis and support for other countries being required to cut production the trumpet ministration has fought back against placing limits on u.s. soil insisting that production is already falling on its own and a statement the u.s. energy department said quote with regards to media reports that opec plus will require the united states to make cuts in order to come to an agreement the e.i.a.
2:03 pm
report demonstrates that there are already projected cuts of $2000000.00 barrels per day without any intervention from the federal government meanwhile oil prices were up ahead of the meeting thursday with a global benchmark brant crude oil futures up 3.9 percent at over $34.00 per barrel and the u.s. benchmark west texas intermediate 5.9 percent at over $26.00 per barrel this deal comes weeks after a breakdown in talks over production cuts between russia and saudi arabia that resulted in a price war and an increase in production which sent oil prices falling to their lowest point in 18 years now it remains to be seen whether washington's purchase a patient will indeed become a sticking point in finalizing a historic deal and if the world's top oil producers can come together to bring stability to the markets as a coronavirus lock down continues reporting in the newsroom rachel blogs and archie . and joining us to expand on. on the latest news from opec and its impact on
2:04 pm
europe plus the scary remarks from italy that the e.u. trading block could collapse because avakov at 19 can damage former u.k. m.p. george galloway went and so george what's your rate reaction to all of this coming the news coming from opec about saudi arabia and russia. well it's all a bit bewildering really i haven't filled up my tank much these days like everybody else but the last time i did at the pumps the price of petrol was no different to what at the before and this time when the price of oil was down around $20.00 a bottle saw clearly the cuts in prices were not feeding down to the consumer the 2 petrol station secondly they're only is a glut of the level the is because the very same saudi arabia turned on
2:05 pm
all of its tops and flooded the market with oral precipitating the need to motorists fall in prices and now they seem to have walked up back and are going to reduce the road they're going to reduce the production so it's all a bit 2 bewildering for those of us not in the oil market but it sounds like good news because the ability in the world economy is obviously a premium now because the main reason for the fall in demand for oil is that a very considerable proportion of the public is no longer travelling factories are no longer producing the industrial demand for oil and what is likely to be catastrophic depression after of this is all over god knows how low that demand is going to fall absolutely george on that last note that you. mentioned demand is way
2:06 pm
down because virtually everybody in the world is on lockdown so obviously opec wants these global lock downs to end it's driving down demand do you suspect that some politicians out there who are rushing to end all of these quarantine measures do you think because they're being motivated by big oil. well yes i mean everything in life depends what side of the telescope you're looking through and as war is too important to be left to generals ashore lockdown is too important to be left to oil companies or for that matter restauranteurs pub or nurse or all the other people who are hard to badly from the fact the population is locked down this has to be medically and scientifically driven not commercially it's really not rocket science. a virus that spread from person to person will spread
2:07 pm
less if the persons can be separated sufficiently and we are playing for time we're looking for a vaccine were looking for the virus to run out of steam and so as long as numbers are still rising and my goodness the rising in your country and mine in particular we've got a 1000 people dead every day for the last 3 days and probably more because they're not necessarily counting them. accurately we understand as long as these numbers are still rising is completely unconscionable to and the lot done so there are companies are just going to have to grin and bear it now speaking of politicians ga talian prime minister just epic conti is raising a flag that the world's biggest trading bloc the e.u. which your country is still a part of for the time being could collapse because of this pandemic italy has been hit with 17000 deaths from this that's the most in any country he says if the
2:08 pm
bloc doesn't have a uniform financial response to this so that debts are debts rather not death debts are incurred by member states and would be shared across all of the e.u. he's calling it corona bonds what do you think of this idea. well i had we are of course still tied to the e.u. but we have officially left it so it's with all all modesty when to the affairs because we're no longer really responsible for them but the prime minister of italy is undoubtedly correct said over and over to you italy and spain were left to rot by the e.u. people were even stealing the p p e and ventilators and saw on that were destined for these 2 countries so much for a trading block so much for
2:09 pm
a union so much for the fraternity that was supposed to exist in this e.u. it's clear also now as italy begins to experience a fall quite a fall in the death rate their financial economic impact is going to be absolutely disproportionate mean germany has a very low death rate and a comparatively low infectivity rate and other european countries have gotten off quite lightly too they'll have to share the pain with it and spain surely if the european union means anything at all but i suspect it will turn out that it doesn't mean very much a tall age union when times are good and it's a dish for unity when the times are bad so i think condi has got it right the stress test of coronavirus may well break the european union yes so much for all
2:10 pm
for one and one for all georgia leave it right there george galloway always appreciate it thank you. thank you. right here in the u.s. immigrant farm workers are being deemed essential workers while they're getting up every day to help grow our nation's food supply during the corona virus outbreak many of them are having trouble feeding their own families our to correspondent natasha suite has more details from los angeles as cofa 19 sweeps the globe the effects have taken a toll on nearly every industry this includes farms across the u.s. from california iowa north carolina to florida 80 percent of the 3000000 farm workers in the u.s. are latino and 90 percent are working on temporary visas from mexico only about half of these essential workers have legal authorization to work and despite taking the daily risk of being exposed to the coronavirus many of these farm workers are struggling to make ends meet according to student action for farm workers in durham
2:11 pm
north carolina farm workers there are an average of 11000 dollars a year the organization says a farm worker must harvest 2 tons of sweet potatoes to earn just $4.50 and just last week the episcopal farm worker ministries saw an increase in need among immigrant families for basic groceries and well more than 200 families came to the offices in search of assistance some 50 families left empty handed immigration and customs enforcement or ice and other city officials have urged and documented immigrants to not avoid seeking medical care during this pandemic no one should be afraid of going to the doctor and seeking medical care if they need it in the state of california hospitals and other care providers are required to provide care to everyone regardless of their legal status but some say despite being considered an essential worker they're still worried about getting the medical attention they may need our community is mean facing a lot you know and it's really on the scribe right now who share
2:12 pm
a lot of what's going on no you know really yes no. we're afraid going to get this sit in in. not knowing if immigration the and so we're going to be there doing their work you know so very very hard as the entire country is working to cope with financial hard times church groups and other organizations are seeking donations for immigrant families who are struggling to feed their own reporting in los angeles to talk sweet r.t. . and a 2nd potential coven 1000 vaccine is being tested right here in the u.s. researchers opened another safety test on an experimental vaccine this one using a skin deep shot the experiment uses a vaccine developed by novio pharmaceuticals taken in 2 doses and require monitoring for weeks leading to phase 2 of the trial if trials are successful the company says it will be able to produce

a 1000000 doses of the vaccine ready by the end of the year. and then over to kentucky where a doctor who saw a group of teenagers not practicing social distancing take the matter into his own hands you can see there the doctor's wearing a red shirt he's seen approaching a group of teenagers moments later he is strangling one of the girls that already on the ground 57 year old john rademaker was charged with 1st degree strangulation and 3 counts of harassment with physical contact he was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. and saudi arabia has declared a unilateral 2 week cease fire in yemen saudi officials say the move is in response to a united nations truce calls and to help stop the spread of covert 19 and a ceasefire if it sticks opens the doors to a deescalation of the fighting in the 5 year long war in yemen. and protesters are

2:17 pm
i. lot of love today on the economic front as the fed is pumping an additional $2.00 trillion dollars into the economy for new loans and the senate seems to be at a stalemate on billions more for small businesses so joining us to discuss the best co-host and investigative journalist ben swan over at the update desk ben as so 1st let's start with the senate voting on more funds for small businesses how much are we talking here well we were talking about to another $250000000000.00 which would mean that that particular part of the cares act the small business portion of it would be worth about $600000000000.00 so essentially senate majority leader mitch mcconnell wanted to bring this to the floor today get a quick vote on it and just put more money into the program the problem is it went nowhere this whole thing's stalled out because essentially mcconnell said i'm just asking you guys to change that 300000000000 to 600000000000 essentially it's just
2:18 pm
basically erasing the 3 and replace it with the 6 but democratic leaders said no that they wanted to have more oversight over the program and add some additional changes to how the program is being run so far and because of that the 2 sides came to a stalemate and nothing got done so that's very bad news and that update coming in just a few minutes ago i got another one for you 2 is speaking of money being pumped in the federal reserve so that says that they're going to pump another 2.3 trillion with a t. $2.00 trillion dollars worth of loans that are going to be made to businesses and corporations that need help right now so we still do not have the full details of what is going to go into those loans how you qualify for them but we do know this manila that so far the $300000000000.00 worth of loans that was set up to run to the s.b.a. that system has been completely overwhelmed so far and there's no way it's going to be able to pay out to everyone who has applied so there are a lot more applicants than they were anticipating. well the truth is there
2:19 pm
shouldn't have been more applicants than they were in dissipating they just underfunded it because we're going to shut down the entire economy you have to understand that now everyone's business virtually is being affected by this and then what about this week's jobs report what are we learning what are we gleaning from those numbers. and so that's another point here you know we're talking about all these businesses that are struggling was a result of that as of today manila another 6600000 files for unemployment that means in 3 weeks we've seen 16000000 people in this country filed for unemployment i mean it's an incredible number again these are not permanent numbers hopefully the sooner that people get back to work obviously that will be the case but these are people who had 0 hours that means that they got nothing from their employers in the last week were up to 16000000 people in just 3 weeks now i mean i know those numbers sound like a tsunami of people that are not necessarily unemployed but clocking in their hours but the truth of the matter is to abandon a lot of these jobs just are not going to come back there are going to be mom and
2:20 pm
pop shops restaurants various businesses mechanics or what have you they're just going to fold and shut down their doors for ever so they're still going to be a large portion of those numbers that stay on unemployment right well it depends on a couple things 1st of all one of the things that may have pushed the unemployment numbers up a little bit higher this week is that the rules have been changed a little bit on this if you are self employed you can now file for unemployment so that's one thing that's also driving the numbers up but also remember this that if we can get these other programs that p.p.p. that paycheck protection program to actually pay out 2 and a half months worth of wages for people who have not been able to work and also pay for a mortgage or rent cost businesses could recover from that if the s.b.a. would loosen up some of the guidelines in terms of loans that are out there there could also be you know right now they're saying they're going from that express loan from $350000.00 per applicant to up to $1000000.00 there are. allow business
2:21 pm
owners to bridge this but if that does not happen then you're right then millions of people will remain on those unemployment rolls obviously all we can do is just hope for the best then but these numbers definitely shocking a slap in the face and wait a wake up call we've got to do something here. as always appreciate the update thank you militants. and iraq's caretaker prime minister abdul mahdi has chaired a cabinet meeting to discuss u.s. troop presence in iraq earlier this year the iraqi parliament voted to end an agreement that allows us troops in iraq which followed a u.s. targeted attack against the iranian general on their soil but now prime minister mahdi said circumstances have changed in the current situation requires a reconsideration of that decision. take a look at this huge section of a bridge in tuscany collapsed on wednesday but given italy's nationwide coronavirus lockdown fortunately the bridge was not experiencing much traffic only 2 truck
2:22 pm
drivers were on the road at that time and according to italian news reports just one of those drivers was hospitalized and is expected to live and then over in libya rockets came raining down in tripoli damaging cars and hospital the hospital complex the hospital was treating over 300 patients there at that time including some for the coronavirus the attack on the hospital was the 3rd such strike on a tripoli medical facility in just the past month. and space crew members from russia and the u.s. blasted off to the international space station today nasa astronaut chris cassidy was among those representing the u.s. side of this mission and for those wondering if this mission was done with the safety of crew members in mind given the coronavirus crisis russian space officials say they have taken extra precautions to protect the crew during training and preflight preparations. following the outbreak. all right let's go over to regina

hamm now sitting over at the sports h.q. so rigid there are a few countries with sports still going on and people are actually able to go attend the games they're sitting in the stands in some not into social distancing very well and delarue says actually defying the odds in this time of coronavirus as their top soccer league started the 1st leg of the belarusian cup final it's a quick one actually and what that most 6 minutes in and he gets the past takes a shot from beyond the box put this team up on the board. pretty happy about that one and it is going to be a beauty of a chip shot and shocked or has no chance there often does not seem to care and he found that that matter if in the stands to witness pavel sets he did have the break wait a minute 30 knowing could stop him any stink to the 2nd goal for dynamo only there gave it to he's going to get close and to wicki just out runs and says this is my shot and takes it shocked or looked absolutely abysmal the whole game and the final
2:24 pm
shot from dynamo prove the point not to be good but also the 20 win and an interesting shot to see during the game then i'm a buddhist need a some a successful if not very weird attempt at filling the stands the whole squad took shirts from manchester united arsenal real madrid with cutouts of players faces and they ended up in the stands the few spectators you see there seem. to the asked as their focus on our parts about the 2 new. soccer headlines are few and far between these days so let's have an edition of the rector's day 2 when players have a chance to make news on the pitch and will keep it all in the most recent decades without the 15 paleo is gifted a diamond adorned statue to celebrate his 1283 goals scored during his career he missed superstar during the 98 world cup winning 3 of them during his 2 decades long career 17 ingalls 81st master spaniard sergio garcia defeated justin rose in a sudden death playoff the duo. par for playing 72 holes 1st major title for garcia

and his 74th attempt at a big time when they're just devastated on the 18 the hole but in 200-1008 was sad moment tottenham hotspur striker harry kane suffered a bad ankle injury the 1st leg a champions league quarter final tottenham beat manchester 10 in the game but his last time came so the pitch for the rest of the season. athletes across the globe are feeling the impacts of the current of ours especially among soccer clubs in europe and their fans than france those players though found a way to give back to those that normally fill their stands on match day league one top club. made their stand to help those fighting the coronavirus on the front line the team along with their p.c. foundation has launched the hash tag p.s.g. engaged to fundraise for health care workers p.s.g. already made an initial donation of 100000 euros or about 109204 dollars as you fancy joining $51015.00 or 20 euros about $5.00 to $55.00 u.s. dollars because monday the money raised will go to hostels and or parents of those

that sick or popular say those on tours working throughout the country and abroad and neymar actually made his own secret contribution of $875000.00 to unicef to help fight the coronavirus and the league is suspended until further notice. so it's good to see you know soccer players and a lot of athletes around the roman ill are finding themselves a 3 time in to give back like neymar has is pretty impressive yeah that's a nice chunk of change that he donated would he have it i'm sure he has and it's good you know france is hard hit like most of europe is most of the world is by current virus i'm sure italian soccer players have been doing the same thing i'm sure in the u.s. you see celebrities and athletes they're also donating their own money to help with coronavirus what i did find the most odd in today's sports news regino was the belorussians and their fake fans in the in the little eerie you know i'm sitting there we cut the video we're watching it and they get shot at. you know
2:27 pm
2 and it's funny because you see these fans and then later in the clip you see really great really life going over there and i can't tell who's more excited than i do the other thing is about this thing of exactly i'm going to say i was a big a flag on this plane just like when people put dummies in the passenger seat diving in the carpool lane in the dummy sometimes you're not going to work. we know but you know it's not really just saying just say all right thank you for that regina and we'll have a lot more news coming up for you at 3 pm eastern today in new york city at least 41 transit workers have now lost their lives because of the coronavirus as new research now indicates that european travelers actually brought the virus into new york and some are asking what's with all this love for andrew cuomo now given that his state's hospital system was actually being degraded slowly for years ahead of this pandemic so we're going to discuss that all that more coming up at 3 pm so until then make sure you download the brand new portable t.v.

a town the question and we looked at the motional physical well being the number one thing they noticed over and over was depression i mean in a large percentage of the population we are hardwired to be social we're supposed to be out and about our brain grew the size that it grew so we can process each other's faces are hear the voices you don't need to go hunting with a big brain many that connect with each other and that's why we have a big brain and so it's very difficult to spend prolonged periods of time out of sorts and out of touch with each other i actually worry 'd especially for the older population because we know connectivity is critical there and they're the ones most at risk but they're the ones who benefit the most from being sheltered in place against solitary confinement would be the only thing comparable or. with the one benefit is we now have technology keeps us hooked into each other you and i can speak from our homes i'm in my basement you're in your palatial facility in the specially.
