department of labor more than 17000000 new jobless claims have been filed in the past 4 weeks and in fact last week saw 6600000 americans applying for unemployment benefits in just one week and all the tea leaves are reading that this is just the beginning my friends and that these numbers could actually be on the conservative side of things. but it's not just the united states of america facing massive amounts of unemployment new new new new new all around the globe jobs are being lost in record numbers thanks to the code 19 pandemic in fact the international labor organization well they now estimate that working hours will decline by 6.7 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2020 which is equivalent to $195000000.00 full time workers the aiello director general guy ryder sudden a statement to the media that quote this is the greatest test for international

cooperation in more than 75 years if one country fails then we all fail we must find solutions that help all segments of our society particularly those that are most vulnerable or at least or least able to help themselves. and that that is the key my friends that is the standard that we must hold our leaders to in these dark times not only here in the united states but around the world as well the days of handing out pennies to the masses while the top 15 and 10 percent of the rest well it's quickly coming to an end because history tells us that most often in the wake of the great pandemics the pitchforks and torches are sharpened and lit which is why it's time to start watching the whole. what's going on a city street you want to. see see this joyce

specifically and in a lot of our shopping malls and areas like that are macy's of the world those industries were already on their way out this coronavirus expedite the process but many of them had shuttered stores across the country and began doing that months ago you know it's interesting to me shows that the ilo what you mentioned earlier about the global issue of job loss there actually has to. with 38 percent of the global workforce roughly 1200000000 workers around the planet are working in sectors that are exactly what you just talked about these high risk sectors that are in severe decline and i'll put these sectors include retail trade accommodation in food services and even manufacturing all those sectors that are hardest hit you look at this chart that you can see right now that's that's the chart of when the recession happened 2008 of. people asking for unemployment look at the spike at the end that's insane but when you look at it it's completely baffling it's upsetting it's and raging in many cases it's also something because we know what these

projections are going to look like again outside of coronavirus times we're talking about manufacturing we knew that that industry was all but dead we're talking about retail we're talking about certain certain aspects of the hospitality industry a lot of the lower the lower skilled work a lot of a lot of jobs that many americans depend on who who don't have college degrees many depend on who live in across our urban centers i'm a rule areas as well and i don't think that we've really taken it seriously to the extent that we should have what could happen to these jobs and how america will look if they no longer exist that is true and this is this is what you're seeing is the fall out of when you try to build an economy in a country on the service industry which is the only industry that really works when you have the wealth divide that with this country has you know when you have so much debt between the haves and the have nots the service industry is what fills that because the industrialists like you said there's no industrial base anymore the other problem that we were talking earlier today when we look at the story too is these numbers that we're seeing 17000000 filing for unemployment you accurately

pointed out to me earlier today that like that's what we know of in terms of who doesn't have a job exactly we have to really break down these numbers and understand that this is not a true reflection of how many people are unemployed across this country we know that states across the country michigan being one that's prominent right now but states across the country are are having issues with. their systems people who are trying to apply for unemployment online think bleak and not because there are so many people applying at once these systems were not built for hundreds of thousands of people almost entire states in some cases applying for unemployment benefits at one time so they're shutting down and many people are you know flooding the phone lines trying to get someone to answer them so that they were actually be counted and receive unemployment benefits so that 17000000 of the people basically got through exactly what might be double of that. that tragedy i mean that's that breaks my heart when you look at that and the other problem too is that because of what you're talking about part of the big 2.2 trillion care package that you know

that they just passed in congress laid off workers are eligible for enhanced unemployment they might get an extra $600.00 a week for the 1st 4 months this is going on but if they can't get through if they can actually get the systems of government to work and get through those phone lines or get online without the site crashing they're never going to see that absolutely this is eerily reminding me of what happened with the initial obamacare rollout everybody signed up and then all of a sudden nobody could get anything done because that site was not ready for the capacity either knowing that because on a virus was going to have the effects that it does on the economy i don't understand why the states didn't do more in the weeks leading up to it to actually make sure that people will be able to you last that service it goes back to what i said to but it's true right after all these pandemics when you look throughout world history that's when the pitchforks come out that's when the torches come out and that's when suddenly you see a dramatic shift in how society runs itself immediately following sometimes to the fascist sometimes to the socialist but either way i think we're in the we're going to big changes coming as soon as we're out of this absolutely. coronavirus has

shelters and the other 35 percent are found in our streets under bridges sidewalks parks and abandoned buildings. coping 19 poses a unique set of challenges for the under-served communities homeless individuals often grave health care outcomes they lack health insurance can't see doctors regularly or at all suffer from mental health and addiction issues that disproportionate rates and have nowhere to turn for help as a global pandemic continues to spread cities are scrambling to respond to the growing homeless crisis and its intersection with public health according to the u.s. department of housing and urban development over half of america's homeless population is found in one of 5 states california new york florida texas and washington permanent supportive housing transitional housing and shelters was born with a population are in short supply and can't meet the growing demand as the local

government's response appeared with work over 100 and its effect on the homeless they're failing thousands of people live in an overcrowded shelters and on the streets with little access to basic things like showers and sedate at least 3 shelter residents have tested positive for coping 19 in l.a. with thousands of empty hotel rooms available bickering and territorialism among local leadership continues to put homeless people at risk. contrast this with boston where convention centers are being repurposed repealed hospitals but also providing shelter for those in dire need as a global pandemic continues to spread these are through a way to respond to the growing homeless crisis and its intersection and public health joining us now is to have a bath street medicine director of health students taking action together. so i beg your very much for coming on to a pleasure having you on the show again this spread of bamaga is devastating and its death toll continues to mount specifically among the black american population

demographic also disproportionately affected by homelessness they can't social distance they can't practice safety measures like the c.d.c. recommends and also have many preexisting conditions this is a rep recipe for disaster is it not as a street health dr do you see your royal provider and are there others taking this form of activism to the streets to try to help this population that truly is right in the crosshairs of this pandemic. well thank you for having me 1st. off i'm a medical student so not yet a doctor but i do spend quite a not quite a bit of time on the streets it's. just seems to your question some of the stuff that we've been seeing out there when we 1st started going out a lot of people knew about the virus and as we continued to go folks found out about it because some of their basic essential services like street outreach team stopped going they those who relied on and handling were no longer receiving their regular income and so. just to kind of build off of that we've also found that the

conditions that homeless folks are in is especially those who are in shelters. are inadequate to address the recommendations by the c.d.c. you'd be surprised actually the recommendation for those who are unsheltered who are experiencing symptoms that don't lead to respiratory compromise meaning not severe disease but still symptoms not. the last could possibly be to shelter in place in their encampment and so it would make it very important for us people who are still continuing to go out to be able to provide those services to them on the street. and the federal emergency management agency or fema is helping in l.a. by paying 35 percent of everything cough or supportive housing while the state of california is providing 800000000 in emergency funding to counties they think this type of partnership is something we will see across more states. what hopefully there the amount of taskforce in funding allocated to addressing covert 19 in

homeless populations is absolutely necessary i think we should start to see that rise more and more however one of the things that we want to warn about is kind of stigmatizing and shelter populations as vectors of the disease when in reality they're not no more likely maybe even in some some circumstances less likely to get it then you or i and so it would be important not to just instinctually round up homeless folks in the process violating their civil liberties because they're being seen as a vector of disease in terms of funding and allocating resources to them i think it's important that whatever measures those are led by people who've been doing the work and not just an instinctual and instinctual call for emergency housing no matter what that might look like we think it's important that emergency housing for those who require it in those who need it include lots of social and

medical support services you see if you work hard to get that housing for someone but you don't follow up with the kind of support folks would need it's very easy for them to lose that house and out back on the street. that's a great point you made on both fronts there also you know we shouldn't be vilifying them or putting them out there are saying like all of these people are going to be more susceptible and dangerous. and in getting this disease than anything else i think it's great points that you just made there the ending homelessness act of 2019 was sponsored by maxine waters last year and she wrote a strongly worded letter to hud secretary ben carson about hog regulations that increased homelessness and thus far it's become kind of this political football tossed bath back and forth between both parties what are measures congress and the white house on a federal level what are the measures that they can take to improve the dire homeless situation that we're facing here in the united states. well i think it would be our 1st start to develop task force which put experts in the position to

inform those responses from public health officials that cetera i think something that those who may not understand the live he's of homeless folks and i actually got this analogy from a mentor of mine is that homelessness for those experiencing it is kind of like being on a ship direct boat and so you kind of holding on to whatever pieces you can to form some semblance of structure so any kind of response which works to radically disrupt that rounding people up streets sweeps forcing people into emergency housing to try to stop the spread of the virus all of those are measures which at the surface seem like good ideas but in reality could actually be making the spread of the virus worse. in terms of our a larger response at least locally one of the problems is that in shelter populations those charters aren't adequate in terms of spacing to accommodate the

amount of people that they need at the distance that they need them at along with the hygiene protocols that are required and then there's just the shelter population for us shelter populations people who are homeless but are sleeping on the streets access to stuff like hand washing bathrooms all of those are not available and so it makes following the guidelines of the c.d.c. nearly impossible and in my experience something like a mobile hand washing stations which is something that community organizers and advocates like students and public health workers have been putting together should be instituted on should be instituted on a federal level rather than just on a volunteer basis. so i have that's a brilliant brilliant breakdown of what's going on and thank you again for coming on and really really breaking this issue down for us it's always a pleasure having you on and keep up the great work out there in terms of helping those people that need meet our help the most. thank you so much for having.
