12:00 am
the best. hello and welcome to crossfire we're all things are considered a computer labelle after a lackluster primary democrats and their media friends have decided on joe biden as their party nominee is the electable will the progressives fall in line with his job offering voters and will the d.n.c. experienced buyer's remorse come november.
12:01 am
ross knocking joe biden and the democrats i'm joined by my guest richard goodstein an old bridge he is a democratic strategist and a former adviser to bill and hillary clinton and in new york i'm joined by how when she was in city she is in american journalist with r.t. her writings are collected at helen of destroying dot com or across liberals in fact that means you can jump in anytime you want and i always appreciate it let me go to you 1st. i know you have to tell me you're really super excited about joe biden is your nominee right i mean really ok because you're part of the. peter i am super excited when i look at the polls and i see that the american people have come to their senses i guess you know i'm not donald trump's biggest fan and when i see. notwithstanding the fact that there is this usual rally around the flag it gracing a president during a time of crisis and that's happening in every other country on the planet and
12:02 am
virtually every state in the united states dollar tax rates went up and now they're back down to where they've been and joe biden is beating him by 6789 whites in some of the big respectable polls so that does excite me that yes fair enough fair enough ok the national polls mean nothing at this point and if you compare it to 2016 joe isn't doing that well hillary was doing much better ok having said that when he going to win here let me you know let me go to hell and ellen. the real issue here is within the democratic party itself in it's really centered on bernie bernie sanders ok they finally got him out ok they rallied their forces the media came in to save the day as well and it really gets down to the bernie bros and i don't use that term in a project pejorative way as many but i know
12:03 am
a lot of bernie bros and they are fervent very smart people may have just much gumption as conservatives do this if we disagree but helen it really gets down to the progressive part of the party are they going to be won over by joe because joe has given them nothing to did. yes i mean the good the ones who voted for hillary back in 2016 will probably fall in line behind joe personally i don't understand why people were willing to live up to her bernie this time around after he basically threw them under the bus and $1016.00 telling them to vote for a candidate that went against everything that he stood for and now he's done that again so i think in the same world the progressive's would probably try to vote 3rd party of course not living in the same world as many recent events have made clear but i don't buy them is not going to excite the progressive vote i think a lot of people stay home and i think a lot of people will vote for her apartment ok well richard how he says will joe biden reach out to be aggressive in any meaningful way because i have to agree
12:04 am
with how and i mean bernie was on some not late night talk show when he was asked a very important question do you think joe can we didn't and he said yes and then ever all of us are saying why are you running ok and what was the last 4 years all about what was the last election all about because i would contend and i think you would probably agree with me that he's going to need a lot of progress across to you know get over the line to win because the party is very fractured so the same question i mean is job to give them anything because i see a lot of angsty on the part of bernie supporters and nks against bernie himself go ahead richard. so let's talk about this through the prism of issues bernie sanders is fervently in favor of habeas many people have health care as possible joe biden was instrumental as an aside when we got the affordable care act passed donald trump is in court today trying to strip tens of millions of people coverage
12:05 am
who it creates this in condition so with progressives really care about issues like who has health care and who doesn't this is not a close call let's take climate change as an example barack obama and joe biden push very progressive climate change proposals having to do with the power industry and others and sign on to the paris climate deal donald trump says the climate change is a hoax so if progressives these people who backed bernie sanders really care about addressing climate change this existential threat this is not a close call you go issue by issue let's take gun violence barack obama and joe biden push ways in which we should limit access to guns not interfering with the 2nd amendment god forbid but making sure that we reduce gun violence double trouble things we should do nothing other than get its guns in as many hands as possible so progressive presumably care about that too so you go issue by issue peter and this
12:06 am
is not actually a close call in 2016 these people who were people who either voted for trump or voted 3rd party thought at what differences may respond when we now know what the implications of donald trump when he get are so people who supported parties or if they can really care about the future of the country and the issues this is not a close call. well ok but i think you know again if you look at the complexity of the democratic party what it what it because now that joe wants to embrace the obama legacy well what about those 505000000 people that were thrown out of their homes when barack obama saved the banks so you would wall street in and main street in people when homeless ok if that is at the normal we want to go back to because i don't see much of the legacy of barack obama that is all about appealing he sold out to the banks and big and to special interests like they always do when they get into power donald trump is doing the same thing don't misunderstand me ok but how and i mean you know richard's got
12:07 am
a point on some of those points right there but there's a fundamental difference is that the needs of workers particularly right now who is losing their home their health care it's not because of donald trump per se it's because millions and millions of people are losing their job ok that's what that that is ok i think that for a lot of people joe biden is a retread that was very unimpressive and i think here and here's my question to you and i think the democrats did you know we hugely disservice by having such a. an interesting lackluster primary job was never even challenged on his record ok what did he particularly of all those debates he hardly had to defend his his record because nobody would go there because of democratic orthodoxy it's ok because when he comes up against trump trump is going to go for an animal on him we've already seen the ads go ahead of him now and go to new york yet they're basically counting on people having this sort of haziness l.g.'s in the obama era
12:08 am
where nobody really remembers what happened in the obamacare which was as you said of massive think they'll outs millions of people being thrown out of their homes the affordable care act which was supposed to provide universal health care was actually begin to enter the insurance industry as insurance premiums have gone up since then well not a lot especially when the intl mandate 'd made it so that people you had to pay for insurance or you got. tax penalty so that wasn't a good thing for the very very many poor people who still have health care and now at least the individual mandate is gone so people can and who can't afford health care and who make too much to get on the medicare plans but don't make enough to actually be able to afford quality health care and those people were out of luck and they're still going to be out of luck because biden has said he'll veto medicare for all so i mean people who don't really remember the obama era very well might get excited about joe biden and as you said the democrats didn't challenge him on his record at all because they're hoping that those people don't remember the obama years very well and it's counting on people's amnesia is really
12:09 am
a poor strategy for running a winning campaign i mean the only thing that i can think of they're going to try to make it all about the v.p. and then biden just kind of scenes into the background and whether they pick the 2nd in command completely circumventing the voters' wishes we're already hearing so much hype about people like stacy abrams who hasn't won any election in 10 kilometers who of course voters proved early on that they didn't like and that was fortunately cabaret took her out on the debate stage but nobody got a chance to take out by his promise it wouldn't do it so i don't know that i think the democrats might have realized they can live with another term of donald trump because he hasn't you know and in any war and he hasn't stopped giving out money to get on him so we're asking democrats which don't start a lot they're going to i think i think to really deliver the baby which richard i think with this election i think is very interesting because of the in the role that bernie sanders played in the primary he was very strong base ok i mean
12:10 am
a unique base of people giving individual donations to and small donations i mean they did master that part of the campaign if you accept the the master of the message was failed bernie sanders egotist didn't have the fire in his belly to win but what i think is interesting about this election is that maybe for the 1st time in a long time anyway this voting. but the lesser of 2 evils may not be in play because i think it is you said i think a lot of people i want maybe sounds and i think a lot of people to sit this one out i think it is going to sit it out particularly progressives going to say i'm not going to play your game anymore we never get anything from you ever ok we bend the knee we kiss the ring and then you forget about us ok i think a lot of people are saying we're not going to play in that game anymore what do you say to them richard. i disagree on a couple counts 1st barack obama sounds like you and hello are in the same boat you don't think much of this presidency everything all the other democrats come through left i come from the right ok obviously thing i just say if you ask democrats
12:11 am
whether they would take iraq obama over donald trump course i think even helen would concede that would not be close to right and barack obama characterized joke by as having the single most progressive platform of any democratic nominee ever and that's not much playtime turning out some people think it's cabinet hold on and we've seen turnouts we've seen turnout sky high not just frankly in the primaries this year but going back literally since the day after donald trump which went on great it you take city and state and local races let alone the congressional races in 2018 and through the primaries this year democrats are chomping at the bit to have an opportunity to undo the damage that donald trump has done and again maybe you know held probably got some people that she thinks of who think that perfection should be the enemy that good but most democrats don't think that and
12:12 am
most democrats are horrified at the damage that has done to the country and we do know it for 4 years unchecked by having to answer to the voters that will motivate democrats if nothing else well again helen so what is the sterling reputation road record of joe biden you know this is a short program i can't. what you much time to think about. go ahead yes i mean he voted for the 9094 crime bill which put on president numbers of black men in jail for crimes that still serving sentences for 20 years later that he could see he voted to. i mean. it's a 2nd short program but he's been behind a whole lot of awards he voted for the iraq war he shamed people who didn't vote for the iraq war and voted for the war in afghanistan he's a well actually he was vice president during the during the war in libya and syria
12:13 am
and during the other war in iraq he voted for and. we can't forget about christmas because i'm sure donald trump is the real answer is with a vengeance. and china and china ok i so i don't i noticed the dueling ads that came out very very interesting this is going to be a nasty campaign or i'm going to jump in here and this is your program we're going to a short break and after that short break we'll continue our discussion on joe biden and the democrats new york. you're sitting somewhere i. can just.
12:14 am
see i'm going to. i was on the floor some things in my bathroom you know my brain. it's time for friends that i work since i was having children fever i didn't have any sense of c. source no. from the most you know from the words world would you. recently she goes under the goal of this initiative. that was simon is on the grounds of go purposes. i have heard and. push myself to this for me in the 5 days i'll go to.
12:15 am
taxed as a financial survival stacey let's learn sal fill out let's say i'm not so i get. angry some banks have to fight. thank you for taking. the story that's right. that's labor. welcome back to crossfire where all things are considered a computer lab elder among them are discussing joe biden and the democrats. ok let's go back to you richard richard we keep hearing that we heard this from hillary that she was going to recreate the obama coalition and it didn't work out and we're hearing the same thing from democratic pundits and the media is it 1st of
12:16 am
all possible to recreate that coalition and this is even desirable right now because we have this black swan and then to call the coronavirus which none of us ever could have 4 or seen i mean i can't imagine it's almost hard for me to remember what life was like 6 weeks ago believe me it's really we're living in a very strange time ok so i mean what is that alyson because it looks like the perfect professional and managerial class the suburbanites and people of color is that enough to cross that line because it again we i think that with a progressive there is such a huge wildcard here what's the coalition your bridging there when you think about the people who voted for bill clinton in the night you say you want to sizable presidential elections it was everybody you just mentioned and kind of working class whites working class whites. the democratic party but if the primary indication they left me warmed to joe biden and i will tell you there's
12:17 am
a reason you know in the past we talked about election in terms of who would you like to have a beer with i think this year it's like who do you want to have somebody who is decent back in the white house or not and i think look joe biden comes from scranton anywhere said on his sleeve and i think he means it he's suffered last personally and he knows what it's like to come up to a working class family and i think it again if the if the primary results are a vacation bernie sanders appeal to those people got their vote in 2016 and joe biden got them this time around in addition to the very people that you ticked off that's a pretty sizable chunk of the american electorate and you get to the polls or indication today and i would note every swing state donald trump is losing to choke by joe biden it's not lose any single state that hillary won in 2016 i picked the margins are big but every single one including states like arizona and north carolina let
12:18 am
alone michigan wisconsin pennsylvania donald trump is losing today to joe biden. ok you have but helen you know i find it very interesting how the media treats all this because after the the machinations and the the phone calls late in the night after south carolina also and everything coalesced i mean there's a doctoral dissertation in there somewhere on that ok those 48 hours ok but you know joe biden you know he has a reputation to be in the pocket of the credit card companies also he has his he's never turned away he's never disliked one foreign war. and that and got involved in your continued and of course seriousness of what i would call you know believe women a serious sexual. accusation against joe biden which the liberal media will not talk about will not talk about it and i remember very clearly the cabinet hearings
12:19 am
i was very passionate about the rule of law and the presumption of innocence here but you have the liberal media that does it simply does not want to talk about it ok and they only like the new york times watching because they only started talking about it when bernie dropped out what a coincidence here so i'm very disturbed by that cover the liberal media in a free pass that they give joe when they hammer trump every single day maybe rightly maybe wrongly but they camera him ok the media is playing a very important role in this election as well go ahead. yeah it's a massive double standard and it's just pointing to the further discrediting of the media i mean if everybody polly recalls 20 still it was oh not 5 percent certainty that hillary clinton was going to win and everybody loves hillary hillary is just great and then of course election day 'd came and that wasn't the case so i mean the media running interference for biden in doing this very obvious favoritism as far as hammering on trial for the assault allegations that come from at
12:20 am
least in one case a very curious place this this person but in the end by against him. the new york times waited i think 33 weeks before even mentioning that this thing existed and he read the interview with the editor of the new york times it's utterly embarrassing him trying to cover for basically a complete collapse of journalistic integrity which not with the times has had that in a while anyway but still it's the media is doing putting a nail in its own coffin by completely circling the wagons around biden and just giving away all pretense of nonpartisan isn't. yeah you know you know richard i find it really interesting again you know you've already kind of hinted towards it about breeding decency back into into politics but that's a that's a that's a way to run a campaign ok but at the end of the day it's voting against someone is that going to work this time around is it you the coalition actually is not going to be all
12:21 am
the boxes we've checked up they're just hoping 2 things hatred towards donald trump and then hopefully he'll screw up the pandemic and in the rigged economic recovery that's a pretty risky strategy don't you think because there are so many variables involved ok and job playing the decency card i don't know i think that is very naive i don't think we look at politicians as being decent ok i think we look at the are they the person to get things done ok and i've never met joe biden maybe he's a nice guy but he doesn't seem to be all there i mean i've watched a lot of bitterness with that and with him you know i'm no doctor i'm not a position so i'm not going to judge but you know i've come across quite a few elderly people in my life and i recognize what i think could be you condition are you worried about these things you know joe biden has a phrase he says don't compare it might compare it to the alternative if you say
12:22 am
that it will be the democratic nominee but we're ready against somebody who cannot pronounce the word our actions or i'm not amiss who thinks that frankly frederick douglas has a great future who thinks that an american invented the wheel that's to his opponent's going to be so this notion that somehow by it is the one who showing some adult deficits. look the fact of matter is this isn't one of them to say this about running against somebody. again i think democrats have this sense of relief the reason that there was this coalescing around joe biden after. sure south carolina it was it was obvious there was going to be biden and bernie and a lot of democrats felt uneasy about having a self doubt socialist be the head of the democratic party the notion of keeping control the house of representatives would have been very much in doubt in that instance so and i think there's kind of a sense of comfort with joe biden they know what he's going to do want policies and
12:23 am
they so senator characters that you and i know that's the problem that's the that's the problem yes that's the problem but listen to this about this let me let me just say one thing peter i will believe you and helen and everybody else are taking seriously allegations that what allegation against joe biden by this woman if use is a really where i don't say 20 about the 20 that are actually going to court in her little gating against donald trump because of his assaults on them when i hear that yes i'll believe you me that it's a lot i don't really know here that's too great wakely i don't like the lesser of 2 dimensions and that's 2 great things doesn't work out like that what a candidate does not race it reflects the nurse the mental. the my point in bringing this ok is i'm not looking haven't got to see issue has nothing to do with being that it really is kind of has been if you're going to come out. i gotta get my my point in bringing that is not to stick it to joe no i'm not is meant in the
12:24 am
reference was made to the media not to joe biden ok and my point is you're right maybe 20 cases a publicly known really being reported and then you have this allegation that the powers that be the most powerful figures in media want to keep quiet and they do everything they can and then they'd do these. hits on this individual woman i thought we were supposed to listen to every single woman in every single claim i'm attacking the media here and i'm not disparaging the character of either trump or biden that was the reason why i brought this up but i want to react to something you said richard said you know the thread of the socialist bernie sanders what is the threat that losing your power or new policies are you is the democratic party worried about both a different way of imagining the workload and terrified of losing your power is this it and when it gets down to the day go ahead richard democrats want to house
12:25 am
of representatives by winning swing districts just flipped from republican to democrat and democrats why were so-called new democrats pro-business democrats democrats who held themselves out as middle of the road they also want on health care that's the way democrats will win 2020 and if anything underscores the value of having health care in this country incidentally not tethered to your top telling me at that point about people losing their jobs and therefore losing their health care yes let's have health care not tethered to your job and donald trump would have you had not health care at all you want to have kids on medicaid at all you did you would have no insurance but we are on medicare file as well but i wanted you know medicare saying also i'm sure i've not heard of that i'm going to give you the health care that you need and it's what kind of choices that. well the choice is between a candidate who is trying to get the federal government behind people who have
12:26 am
preexisting conditions as opposed to somebody who's trying to strip that away is actress helen or not or is that something that you think is just kind of like up a 5.8 kind of footnote you think if you think about what is going to be tens of billions like obama like obama has kept this promise as you know all those promises he kept it to close guantanamo to end the wars that turned to one to 7 to mean either doesn't have a history of keeping promises by then have a history of volunteer and the prosecutor himself at large corporations here quietly are saying you're going to settle and probably thinking to himself you can keep us there are many things like that or i've been rabidly shocked he said you can't want to test for corona virus you could get it back what makes that mark step that's what he said that's going to be the rallying cry this year if you want to test you can get it so says donald trump on march 7th and there's not a soul that believes that that's something he could make good on so that's going to be a promise peter to people remember in 2020 well ok look i'm actually really think that this is the lead the coronavirus crisis and what happens afterwards i mean
12:27 am
this devastation of the economy the just the working people being absolutely utterly destroyed during this i mean we're not pocus enough on that because we're focused on the on the power to make this thing goes down the the just it's good to be left behind is going to be caribbean even to comprehend let alone deal with and that's going to be the referendum on donald trump we're rapidly running out of time helen what do you think the chances are of buyer's remorse because that's name of this episode. is joke to make it all the way to the to november or are we going to see a possibility that you know maybe joe kind of be moved along a little bit what do you think when you think the d.n.c. has come in there. i think i'll both the convention comes around that they're going to have to have some sort of come to jesus moment and then maybe you know maybe we shouldn't pick a guy that's got a sexual assault case against him standing and maybe we should pick a guy who's clearly like sundowning half the time he's on camera and maybe we shouldn't does so what i don't call well maybe i mean they're definitely lining him
12:28 am
up for it he is being put up as the the hero who goes against trump and does the right thing on coronavirus that i'm going to get a quick walk. again another episode we were run out of time and i think my guess the new old bridge and in new york i want to go to be worth watching us here in our d.c. and expand remember ross not rose. has changed american lives but pharmaceutical companies have a miraculous solution. based drugs the people who are chronic pain and believe that their opioid prescription is working for them and the remedy be said to. price at
