11:30 pm
we're going to politicking on larry king as the u.s. covert 19 death toll convenience or rise and the disease invades the white house president from focuses on reopening the economy with the majority of states following his cue joining me now to talk about her hopes to reopen her city for business is carolyn goodman mayor of las vegas a position she's held since 2011 she's called the corner coronavirus business shut down total insanity and generate a lot of controversy of the photo the idea of using vegas as a control group for testing whether social distancing actually works the mayor joins us from the have you changed any of your opinion cowan you know i think what i was trying to get across is we weren't broken you know you don't build a city with such great. tourism and convention numbers if we hadn't already
11:31 pm
been a very safe place and one that was so proud of its health people won't come to a community aid or visit a hotel if it isn't absolutely clean and the food healthy and i think what happens from it perhaps a bad choice of words i'm not even sure what the word was but the reality is what i was saying it wasn't broken and sco we really were ready to continue as we were and we would show the whole world that we were safe from wonderful place great entertainment great food great conventions in accra limitless to happy lives whether you can imagine so is a long term the lead time and the laws it is time to survey says the vegas will open in certain degrees over the next month or so will have if they have tables they'll be separated separated from slot machines no nightclubs. restaurants.
11:32 pm
limited capacity isn't that a good start. well you know i don't think much has changed that's the tragedy we still don't have our arms around this very significant virus that really has set a death toll around the world. so we really are where we've always been with that we're very aware of it and everybody's terribly concerned a lot of people are extremely frightened and certainly i understand that but it is we have no prevention yet we have no treatment if one's diagnosed yet and we certainly have no vaccine yet so far so i sent them the city if all 0 since you say a true why open the city. where people were abandoned today jury wide open it well i don't see it that's what i'm trying to say we have been so careful about being a healthy place and operating in the best interests of good health and safety for
11:33 pm
all of our visitors and our residents of course to and so that i have been asking because we now have $36000000.00 plus at a work we have a lot of people that are waiting for their unemployment compensation they're destitute and so we are a service community and so to go ahead and get started is very important but it could recur in the fall. could recur in the summer or continue on or if in come back annually and we know that with the flu vaccine some people opt not to take it but we don't have the vaccine yet and so is my sense or sorry. you disagree with your governor so so are he close all of has seen those in hotels you disagree with that action. i am not in a position to agree or really disagree i have the city we are
11:34 pm
a city of about 700000 were a 155 square miles and i've been very very confident that we operate our city very carefully with great health and great concern for the enjoyment and good health of our errors and costs our mayor or what tell me what you want to happen what would you like. apple or do you want 1st and foremost i want to take care of all the unemployed and get them their compensation at their due their devastated their frightening their frightened their down to their very last dollars and they have children i really do want to work to see the schools open i've been passionate about education and especially our little people being in school they don't learn as well by virtual education they need to have teachers
11:35 pm
qualified teachers and back in the classroom and i know the job of the governor's extremely challenging and if you read some of the things that i have said it's not a criticism of the person it is about getting us back and letting people are earning let them have the right the dignity to provide for their families and themselves and their parents you are vegas open all of the mcnish sheens go in the slot machines in blackjack dealer rebuy they can. a manual you want that now in the end that i was not calling for that i wasn't calling for that i was calling really for the city of las vegas where i'm very very confident that we have built our city always with the customer and arrests again and to employ a 1st in mind for health and good health and safety all the time with the right transportation and everything we were claiming and we just our lives wonderful
11:36 pm
wonderful community and i can use a grip what happened with you and anderson cooper. i was asked to do with street a 5 minute interview which turned into a 25 minute. interview call and then no i never regret anything because i'm here to promote our community for most the greatness of the most diverse community of people and cultures i love it here moved here from the heart of manhattan loved it since 1964 i'm so proud of the people we're all just one group working together to do the same thing and promote the beauty of this fabulous exciting place to live and work and help each other and be a a family of people that believe in what las vegas says here we have
11:37 pm
a people surveyed in a recent number of poll said they would be very uncomfortable going into a casino wouldn't you if the casino a wide open and people using slot machine is in view of the current pandemic wouldn't you feel uncomfortable walking in that crowd would you. well you know it's an interesting thing i am i really the the yes from what i understand the poll and i really haven't looked at it detail other than how governments interact i was told by some people in our press that it was taken mostly in the north and nevada area and we are down here in the south were about 6575 percent of the population of course the casinos down here generate the monies that these cities and the governments and the state operate on and so to walk into a hotel if i could be assured the hotel with absolutely healthy and everything
11:38 pm
everything was clean and i could be assured of good health absolutely if i could be assured it was a good health and clane other than that you know to suppose on something we've never shut this country down we certainly and that's not even my or all my only concern is a spade in nevada where we are a tourism and convention state you know you but you can it with all the things you say with this kind of virus which you admit is a virulent virus you have with all things and all the hotels of cleanliness and everything you can't guarantee safety. health care no no i left they were everywhere well the question is on the other hand this hour long should we be clones could have gone on for 234 years then what's happening to our state it's gone what happens to future generations what happens to all these people
11:39 pm
who've lost their jobs then they'll lose their homes and then what do you have the you have not thanks were brave people and what we need to do is be working on and which i am fully in favor of as i said we were not broken in this city a las vegas we were clean we've not had an epidemic we have not had any complaints you may not had we have constant inspections we have laws we have ordinances we have everything to keep everybody as safe as possible right the problem is this as possible and with a virus like this it's not possible mayor you cannot tell me that las vegas would be safe and open right now you cannot would be that would be absurd and oh well in looking at las vegas's you know there was confusion on the part of some that the city of las vegas is a confined area and the whole of what's called las vegas is unincorporated
11:40 pm
clark county and other municipalities i was not referring to them i was referring to our city that prides itself in its cleanliness good health and safety strip is not in your city right you know basis not us we have no actually this is a lot of this. yes a little man. you know had i been they asked there was a preemptive comment by a person who actually was brand america under one of the previous administrations talking about how the city has no jurisdiction now in this county it's absolutely true we are confined to this city back down trees and i'm very proud of what we do because we do not that i would say anything different anywhere else but we have this area and so to know the pride the excellence of all the people to small
11:41 pm
business people who for sex exciting places where tourists are now flooding the millennial particular love that downtown we have so much whining on and it's wonderfully safe and has been there is a person is trying to recall you have a common. it's america it's simple believe me i've thought in my brain so many times in the middle of the night why i wish that person more. but that's the rag of the american way. carolyn thank you so much for joining us and i hope everything straight somewhere else to see me to thank you and everybody staysail what politicking after with us.
11:42 pm
good food descriptions sound up to tell using even for the owners. how to choose pet food industry is telling us what to feed our pets really more based on what they want to sell us then what's necessarily good for the pet. food may not be a sofa the best people belief we have animals that have you know diabetes in arthritis they have auto immune disorders they've got allergies we are actually creating these problems it's a huge epidemic of problems all of them i believe can be linked to very simple problem of diet and some dog owners so heartbreaking stories about their pets streets the larger corporations are not very interested in proving or disproving the value of their food because they're already making it a $1000000000.00 on it and there's no reason to do that research.
11:43 pm
cigarettes are coming and a lot of people say well you can't go negative on the world reserve currency they also said you could ever print a negative oil futures contract they said you could never print them negative interest rate on a sovereign bond that's already happened and i think about warren buffett for a 2nd i mean i pity him at this point because he says he doesn't like stocks and he's hiding out in cash but his cash is about to go negative returns by the negative interest rate on his calf is going to be. losing money on a stash pretty soon and he said i would never own gold and i would never own bequest so the only 2 life boats for warren buffett at this point and call them decline and he's based out of pride he's going to stick on his negative interest rate cash and he won't buy stocks he's already underperform the s. and p. for 15 years this is going to end up his career as basically a glorified money market fund that was a round trip to nowhere that everyone will just forget it.
11:44 pm
you can't be both with yeah you know what. won't go back to politicking progressive political commentator bill press joins us we'll dig into the lay of the 2020 campaign landscape and we'll discuss of course the colbert 19 pandemic he is the host of the podcast the bill press he is in our
11:45 pm
nation's capital bill more than 30 u.s. states and taking steps to ease social distancing you think this is working. i'm afraid it's too much too soon larry. look i'm as n.c. as anybody to get out of the damn house right now i mean it's. it's been 2 months and. at the same time. i think getting out too soon i'm not ready to go out to some ballgame or out to some concert or even out to some restaurant and the idea that this thing is behind us i think is a little premature there are 1300000 cases in the united states 80000 almost 80000 dead now. i think we need to see but let me put it this way i want to agree with donald trump on one thing he said the white house said when
11:46 pm
you have 14 days with cases going down then we ought to open up not one of those states that you mentioned not one of them has met that criteria yet so i think they stuck to that would be we feel lot safer now the white house is saying anyone entering the west wing has to wear a mask finally is a good idea. i took about freakin time let me tell you you know i i go to the briefings you know we've talked a lot about it i haven't been to a briefing since march 13 because i saw then that that that that was going to become a coronavirus hot spot it is there you've been in there many times i have to that that that's like being on a submarine in the west wing the rooms are so small the carters are so small and so close there is no way you can self distance in the west wing and i think they
11:47 pm
waited far too long to require everybody to wear a mask and now what do you got steven miller's wife the vice president's press secretary has the coronavirus the president's valet the guy that brings him as i do a diet pepsi and has his. service in his meals in the oval office has a coronavirus anthony found she and robert redfield the head of the f a c.d.c. ourself quarantined and and donald trump and mike pence who are also exposed refused to quarantine and refused to wear a mask so i'm afraid it's going to get worse and i tell you this the reporters i got a notice today again from the white house press corps and they said unless you absolutely have to be there or do not come to the white house it's too dangerous what's your overall assessment of how trump has handled this. bed lee i think
11:48 pm
you know the problem is he waited too long we last 2 months where. we could have been doing some social distancing he could have been curry states to lock down he didn't so january february were lost because he saw this as some political thing democrat you know whatever blame it on china blame it on obama. and i think we're suffering a lot of people have died because of that last time what number one number 2. i think he made a mistake in not putting forth i think there should have been a national plan for how every state would do their self distancing and a national plan to help every state get all the masks they needed the ventilators and it instead as you know what the president said was face up to you governors you know everybody kind of do their own thing and it's up to you or you know it's not
11:49 pm
my job you got to go by the masks and all that kind of stuff so i just think we lost or lost the that didn't have the leadership from the white house that you should have in terms of a crisis. oh we have trump economic advisers predicting dire forecasts about unemployment saying it could surpass 20 percent they also say that they're looking at an economic recovery in the 2nd half of this year who's right. and then that's wishful thinking if i ever heard it back i mean i don't know how larry i don't know how we get out of this we're going to recover you know we've been through bedtimes before not not of bettors us in our lifetime. but we're resilient and creative and a strong people i know we're we're going to come out of it but it's going to take a long time and right now get this 20000000 jobs were lost in april there are
11:50 pm
30 to 33000000 americans out of a job right now as you said that the unemployment rate is 15 or specs to go to highest 20 percent we haven't seen it since a great depression it's not going it i'm sorry stephen newton it is not going to turn around overnight it's going to have to be a gradual recovery and it will be i believe there are some on the right saying that you fell as the democrats you don't want to get better because you wanted to be big trouble for the president in november can you believe that. i don't believe it and it's just simply not true that's you know that's a typical blame somebody else we're you know. every day the one thing i can do and i can go down the washington mall as far as i can for a long nice walk and it's no problem self distancing because this is nobody else there right on the whole washington mall today i saw 4 people right i didn't get
11:51 pm
close to any of that my point is on the way back there's a house in the window it's got a big banner and i see it every day and it says we're all in this together nobody wants the economy to fail nobody wants more people to die we're all in this together so i think that's just that's just nonsense former president obama in a telephone conversation call the situation chaotic is that a term you would use oh yeah but you know what i think the president was talking about another telephone call was the situation at the department of justice where attorney general bill barr. dropped the charges against michael flynn former national security advisor michael flynn who pleaded guilty to
11:52 pm
lying to the f.b.i. admitted that he lied to the vice president and bill barr said i don't think any crime was committed by larry. i think you and i were taught that lying to the f.b.i. is a crime right yeah it's certainly the other side it is i don't know i don't either and i think what obama was saying is that that's right it really does undermine our system of justice and we know that flynn even though he fired him flynn was trump's buddy and bill barr. is pretty clear it was just doing a big favor for donald trump's buddy do you think joe biden should figure out ways to get out more yes. what he i don't know how he does i don't know how he does it i think. they. you know that
11:53 pm
he's getting out online for local t.v. stations but this seems to me there's got to be some way they can get him they can get him around more there's another school of thought larry on that by the way i agree he should get out more i'm not i'm not changing my mind but there are others who say since trump is making such a mess of everything that the best thing to do is just to stay out of the way but you know when the other guys screw it up so badly the you just shut up and let them do it but i'd like to see more i'd like to hear more of joe biden a tape of the latest the latest that i've heard is in the biden camp that there's they see now that if he succeeds. he's going to take over a country that's in his bed shape as it was when f.d.r. became president and that he is going to have to be an f.d.r. kind of president and do big things big time on the economy real fast
11:54 pm
to bring this country back. yard the new deal he put the government to work he had people building things like stadiums and highways and yep yep yep yep and we have talked about we talked about infrastructure write that down that's not now's the time for. good people to work rebuilding highways bridges you know water treatment plants stadiums parlin ago is now reporting that december the kemal are harris is in the lead to be biden's running mate i don't know how you know that but what do you make of that well the guy wrote that crist catalog oh. friend of mine he's a good reporter he talked to a lot of people around he didn't talk to biden you talk to a lot of people around biden. i thought that was a pretty good story but here remember he also said in the same story that elizabeth warren is
11:55 pm
a close 2nd. i think that camel harris elizabeth warren and amy club which are the 3 front runners i think i think either one of them would be dynamite but i also want to mention to me that the sleeper candidate if you will is susan rice you remember her national security adviser under obama suzy ambassador to the u.n. african-american really tough and really knows government knows the white house and obama worked closely with her in the obama white house so i wouldn't be surprised to see her a camel heris lucky's she's our california senator she's great i think the only thing is. biden doesn't need california he's going to win california yeah right but you know one test them point she doesn't help. that if people are torn about vice president remember like. when bill clinton picked al
11:56 pm
gore another white guy from the south you know some people say you need somebody who can deliver a state. but that's not always the case but hey grok obama didn't pick joe biden because he could deliver delaware that. 3 you know has 3 votes so you're right but come on harris' rebuttal a lot of a lot of energy you know and. i think should be dynamite bill thanks for your time as always hey larry we go back a long way it's good to see the good will bill press and thank you for joining the audience on this edition of politicking remember you can join the conversation on my facebook page or tweet me of king's sayings and don't forget use the politicking hash tag and that's all for this edition of politicking.
