as of 2013 the pet food industry was dominated by only 5 more titan glamour companies. yet when a consumer walks into a store it's easy to assume that there is a vast array of choices for their dog or cat and the ability to choose that one perfect food. but just how different are these choices and what's really going on inside of those bags is what's inside really as healthy as the shiny outside labeling would have be believed.
12:32 pm
i've. found. that. my name is karen becker and i'm an integrative veterinarian here in bourbonnais illinois. this is a commercially available raw food diet this is what i am i'm also going to give the boys in a. great 1st approach. is a. very dire. time is it. fair. if. so there's a problem in the pet food industry and most pet owners aren't aware that there's
12:33 pm
a problem and unless you have an interest in digging deeper and finding out what those issues are you can go through your whole life eating the exact same food assuming what you're doing is healthier pat and once you start digging the evidence becomes overwhelming that the industry has significant issues. the human animal relationship is deeply embedded in our society. it is estimated that 80000000 dogs are in the united states with 96000000 cats. americans alone spin an estimated $60000000000.00 on pet expenses every year and that number is growing exponentially. it's always a 1st of all the buy something you're. something that will make them happy and live a healthy why we give them exercise of clean water and want of love. we've always
12:34 pm
purchased food from a grocery store or a pet food store that provided convenience the promise of nutrition in familiarity with the brain in. the industry at large survive for nearly 100 years without a single thought from consumers as to what was going into the pet food. that all changed in 2007 when a toxic ingredient made its way into pet foods killing thousands of pets nationwide melamine is used as a fertilizer in asia and also has several industrial commercial uses including a component of kitchen utensils and plates the association between melamine in the kidneys and urine of cats that die and the melamine that was in the food they consumed is undeniable just and only melamine is an ingredient that should not be in that food at any level. following the 2007 recall one central question began to resonate among consumers. what are dogs and cats actually supposed to eat it's
12:35 pm
confusing because the pet food industry is telling us what to feed our pets more based on what they want to sell us than what's necessarily good for the pet she is oprah winfrey is about mary and now an author and her new book is called the war treatment please welcome dr barbara well good morning they all right thank you so much for being here so let me ask you this what are the things that we are giving them that we should know and then what should we be given that we are so no corn no weight no so way after many years of r. and d. we have found that corn is still the best available source of carbohydrates when processed and refined properly those are the things that cause overweight diabetes arthritis chronic skin infections allergies things like that that's the precursor for a lot of that if you're feeding for nutrition and they're eating a lot of those things that mess with the body they just don't stay healthy let me ask you this dr are those. the things that you find in dog food and you're talking
12:36 pm
to people who are giving table food today i know it's and. during the war there was a moratorium on using the metal cans for canned food so they said you can't use metal cans for dog food anymore you have to use that for ammunition. as somebody said we need to make the dog food something we could put in a paper bag and that's how they did it and nobody thought at that time that making a camel and eventually the way that we process it now could ever be a help detriment to the dog. now because of the way that the world is corn and wheat have become so subsidized and so chain it's a super cheap way of problems now in animals that i don't think we've seen anything like it in in history every animal that comes in to see me they'll say oh they're
12:37 pm
basically healthy but the list of problems is immense so it's not that they're healthy they're actually suffering from still many many maladies a lot of the same maladies that we see in people we have animals that have you know diabetes and arthritis they have auto immune disorders they've got allergies and part of the reason for that is because we are actually creating these problems it's a huge epidemic of problems all of them i believe can be linked to a very simple problem of diet. and. 2 after each other after the trial and. still 12 years old no you don't or you know why you know the choice is up because your parents feel extra food put this down every day they can arrows. right
12:38 pm
on it absolutely the best and i can imagine they're so excited about it and it's gonna. and i worry about them eating raw food and then liking me now i do not. know if it's because the fact is. there aren't any happens it's. just. i think raw food is weird to a lot of people when i 1st mention it to people they sort of say raw food i have to feed raw food to make my diet healthy like are you crazy and i well you know you don't have to do it it'll make a difference in make a huge difference. one of my hobbies and passions as wildlife rehabilitation. this is her doing is. you see the current. and. i have been fascinated with
12:39 pm
nature and life something can remember. 2 i became a license to wildlife rehabilitator when i was 14 and i knew that i would have a life long career helping animals all when i was 14 i heard about a woman that had tremendous success with wildlife rehabilitation name is barbara harvey and she was a who are kind of concent and i called her and i said barbara my name is karen bakker and 14 years old and i want to know how you became so successful. long story short she invited me to her home in her account wisconsin she lives in a beautiful log cabin during the winter months and she lived in a teach me on 13 acres during the summer months she invited me to live. on her 13 acres and see how she rehabilitates hocks eagles i was in falcons barber has the best success rate in the country with raptors and the reason she has such an success she feeds biologically appropriate all. living
12:40 pm
mice rabbits rodents to those animals to be able to help the body recover from injury. so when i went to veterinarian school years later and i sat to these nutrition courses and when they gave me the laminated chart that told me what food i should feed with what disease process things did. before i went to vet school i worked for years in zoo medicine. the most important thing i think i learned from that is every species has its own requirement each species must eat what it is supposed to eat it's developed evolved to have a specific diet that keeps it healthy. each animal has its own biologic requirement for certain nutrients a species appropriate diet for worms is dirt a species appropriate diet let's say for hummingbirds would be nectar you can't feed earthworms nectar and you can't feed hummingbirds dirt both of those animals
12:41 pm
would simply die it gets pretty confusing with dogs and cats however because dogs and cats are nutritionally much more resilient than other species and what that means is that we can nutritionally abuse them for lack of a better term and they don't die immediately they just have an overall vitality decline and overall degenerative changes take place in their bodies from feeding them food that are not biologically appropriate cats being obligate carnivores have to consume meat to be able to thrive they do not have a biologic requirement for any type of carbohydrate very high protein require a very high moisture requirement and a moderate fat requirement cats originally we thought were domesticated to guard the grain race because cats don't consume grain cats consume ice that consume the grain and so by domesticating cats we assume that there was a mutually beneficial relationship we do know in the last 100 years since we have produced cat foods on the market that cats have experienced c. . difficultly more kidney disease and we know that they have experienced obesity
12:42 pm
organ failure and diabetes at a much higher rate and certainly we need to begin evaluating what role nutrition has and some of those degenerative diseases kidney disease is the number one killer of cats and we know that asking cats to process and tire lead to hated food such as kibble can be very detrimental to kidney health dogs evolved from the gray wolf and we know that dogs came. out of the order carnivora which means they're carnivores in 1903 the international society as a logic nomenclature redefined cain as lupus familiaris as just these other people that define what category what taxonomy animals fit into and why this society concluded that dogs were genetically identical to wolves they shared 99.9 percent of the d.n.a. we know that geno typically the genome type the d.n.a.
12:43 pm
is identical to what has changed over the last 2 to 3400 years this to phenotype phenotype is the jacket which is what that's look like we have bald dogs dogs of my fluffy hair blue eyes dogs with crazy types of here in the body and you know here anywhere else bekele dogs short legged dogs double coated dogs we've created these fantastic varieties of breeds because we like diversity and what we see despite the fact that we have bred dogs to have certain characteristics we have not bred out of them there cain is lupus d.n.a. so yes just as you can have brown hair blonde hair or you can have blue eyes or green eyes brown eyes your nutritional requirements as a human being remain the same despite the fact that you look vastly different depending on what your d.n.a. dictates.
12:44 pm
54 jets and more than 1300 military personnel are headed to heal some air force base in alaska where is that to say come on i'll show you what's the reason for any type of enhanced u.s. military presence in this area russia. what is it suddenly about the south china sea that makes it so that it 11000000000 barrels of oil. take a look at this map who really owns what kind of says no it belongs to us india says no we claim that that belongs to us both of these countries have nuclear weapons capabilities there is reason for concern so that's why we're going to drill down on this story for you today right here on the news with rick sanchez where you know as we always like to say we do believe by golly it's time to do news again.
12:45 pm
good to bad is the. police. were. going to bring one some of the wealthier neighborhoods it's been far more contained in the numbers are much lower than some of the more a neighborhood star city it's the same we're working with going to source outside of the state is there just so it's so unlike anything out of. the major companies criticize. morning consumers against the hazards of feeding
12:46 pm
romita pets claiming it can make your animal sick. however those companies who repeatedly criticize feeding world diet have yet to produce a single study to provide any substantial evidence to support their claims. the problem with the types of research studies that you are describing they would go at least 7 day to 10 years in length before you would get a definitive answer within our. legal requirements and framework said it's not f.d.a. is responsibility to do such studies the research has not been done on raw foods not because there is an interest but because the $1000000.00 it takes to fund that particular research simply isn't there now integrative in areas are working on that but trisha veterinarians will say until we see their research we're not interested in recommending this particular food for dog and cat owners we just don't believe it's safe and healthy the frustration is is that we don't have clinically proven
12:47 pm
research demonstrating that dry and canned foods are wildly healthier for pets as well. the larger corporations are not very interested in proving or disproving the value of their food because they're already making a $1000000000.00 on it and there's no reason to do that research since major pet food companies are involved with and have influence over vet student lack of education surrounding role diets exist heavily among traditional vets when clients come to veterinarians have who have not been educated about raw foods at all and say i'm considering feeding my pets raw meat of course the logical conclusion is why there's a lot of bacteria in the all diets and it's kind of a ticking time clock or you could harm them or why would you do that or it's risky i think we're all food as too much of the potential for negative side effects that it's just not worth it people's biggest question is there could be. pathogens or bacteria parasites within the food that could cause illness to pets when dogs eat
12:48 pm
raw diets their feces their poop has a lot of bacteria. let's talk about. dogs if given the opportunity will eat. dogs and cats being carnivores are equipped to be able to process their evolutionary food source which is raw meat. all of their digestion has acclimated and has evolved to be able to process whole living unadulterated protein so from ripping and tearing their dentition is set up to be able to process meat their stomach acid is very acidic in fact a ph of water which is highly acidic that stomach acid is in place to be able to neutralize pathogens or potential harmful bacteria that could be present in the food from the outside the pet food industry looks like the perfect industry there are beautiful packaging there are diets for every disease in disorder there's all
12:49 pm
kinds of different colors and beautiful pictures and if you look a little deeper unfortunately that isn't the pet food industry is all about. i've collected a few examples here and we're going to go over some labels but 1st example is the food that on the front says be several meals fully prepared bursting with flavor who doesn't want that in a pet food 1st a previous corn 2nd ingredient is soybean meal 30 greeting as peace and bone meal for think gradient is a crown a week followed by animal fat preserve the b a h a we can't they are the ha is that toxic preservatives that should not be found in any human or pet foods despite the fact that it is the 1st 3 ingredients are carbohydrates that are totally unnecessary followed by a totally toxic preservatives selfish q bank not a park next we have a food that has one act. several packaging awards because it's so beautiful there are chunks of meat falling from the sky and i'm being beautiful here of course here
12:50 pm
we have a nice array of radioactive colors that have been added in for you the consumer dogs and cats cannot see all these different colors this is added in because you take my cash it looks beautiful my pet would love it but the amazing buzzwords like a full life. one town or doesn't want their pet to have a playful life this is just entirely a marketing 1st thing greeting a ground yellow corn totally biologically unnecessary 2nd ingredient you can buy products meal totally rendered inappropriate in terms of quality to be nourishing your dog with turning green corn gluten meal very allergenic totally unnecessary for think media whole wheat flour and then animal fat although this really looks to be beautiful and something you'd be interested in nursing or cut with my recommendation is to avoid it over here and they have a special latte right to help with prebiotic fiber there's a lot of these patented words that are trademark words that companies will use to
12:51 pm
how kind of distorted their products will be something special included as a means of you coming back and buying it because other brands you're comparing it to doesn't have to help it's a good so good marketing on that because this particular food is than be a less quality if you are a goat. when you add up organic from rice organic own organic millet organic barley organic grain store go organic peas organic potatoes. portion of the ingredients in this particular food doesn't outweigh the organic chicken or the chicken mia healthy really what are you supposed to say unhealthy the worst possible food in my opinion you could ever feature dog. number one ingredient beef by product. of fruit toast corn syrup what is byproduct. my product is what's left over after an animal has been slaughtered and all the
12:52 pm
edible parts have been removed the criticism lies in the mystery of the meats being news. what is quality quality is a term used when discussing how good or bad the world material that goes into the food actually is whether this protein comes from diseased animals euthanize animals kill human food waste or processing the industry doesn't have to disclose the source of the ingredients. that doesn't prevent them from easily proclaiming that every ounce of their pet food is of the highest quality. the issue is on the back of the dog and cat food bank it doesn't say render terrible quality protein it doesn't say that it also is we also can't less legally grade a u.s.d.a. inspected me so this leaves this giant gap for the consumer to have to fill in that void and it's wildly confusing the controversy with kibble exist because troy food is 4 weeks of moisture. when your animal eats try to they're put in a permanent state of dehydration the quality insourcing of where the ingredients
12:53 pm
came from is kept secret in even if the ingredients were perfect the manufacturing process to make any product shelf stable for extended periods is performed adik chetry newly high temperatures. this creates 2 potent carcinogens that are cyclical means in a cruel mind however most companies do not disclose to the consumer what temperature their foods are cooked at and they act as if the trace amounts of carcinogens pose no threat it was a real 948 when veterinarian mark morris decided to create the 1st person correction petfood still recognizable today at a time mark morris was critical of pet foods for lacking quality ingredients and he wanted to make a superior product backed by scientific research he teamed up with canning manufacturer. burton hill to fulfill his vision. the result became what we know
12:54 pm
today as science diet sold in veterinarian offices all across the country. but in 2013 the wall street journal reported hills was starting to see its profits decline because consumers no longer identified with their ingredients. science diet has since refocused on rebranding their image as more natural creating new product lines and shying away from controversial in rendered ingredients. the national renders association argues that they're providing a necessary role when it comes to the recycling of animal carcasses. if there wasn't anywhere to put the animal waste from the human food industry where would it go in the earth in the air. in the ocean. it all has to go somewhere. we have a huge quality control problem meaning the quality of the gradients coming into the industry anything from potentially fabulous u.s.d.a.
12:55 pm
inspected human grade all the way down to entirely rendered which is every piece and part you could ever imagine actually probably don't even want to think about the final result is used to manufacture hundreds of products everything from so few channels and the fed foods to cosmetics that the company is blending is recital there gradients together with synthetic items and then arose to create a profitable quote complete and balanced diet that is then marketed to tell and in 100 years time we have successfully convinced an entire generation of pat lovers that why would you feel anything but dog food for cats looking at the rules that guide the pet food industry it's easy to see how they are set up to benefit the corporations over the consumer. the regulators have created special terminology for packages assuming that consumers would be able to guess what they mean. any product containing the words dinner nugget or formula only have to contain 25 percent
12:56 pm
actual meat any product labeled with only has to contain 3 percent me furthermore the so-called flavor rule a levels for any protein to be listed on the back it may be flavored as meat but in reality the back that contains the word flavor may contain little to no meat by using the key word flavor on the package the pet food could but does not have to contain any meat at all but it's acceptable for the package to contain an image of a fresh day in green panels to display certain percentage of the protein percentages do not represent actual meat content in the product as protein can come from a multitude of sources this raises the question if the average consumer knows that the terminology used on packages reveal the exact amounts of meats used in foods trying to understand who exactly makes these rules and what their actual legal authority is needs to many different organizations the association of american feed
12:57 pm
control officials is a non-governmental organization they have a model bill that that sets the standards in terms of ingredients nutrient levels package labeling in terms of ingredients as well for pet food companies to abide by each year members of africa come together to update their official publication which defines each ingredient that's allowed to go into pet food. members of the major pet to companies it in the meetings as well below in their voice to be heard when it comes to what goes into pet food. so who is africa i think if you look at our websites we have some very clear statements about the fact that asco is not a regulatory organization itself that's one thing important the 2nd is that asco doesn't approve products while we do is we deal with the ingredients in the scientific validation if you will of the ingredients that go. into the food and then the actual claim that a manufacturer makes it is after all approved is probably not representing what but
12:58 pm
after itself would say the f.d.a. has worked closely with f. co on the regulation of all animal feeds not just pet food i think the important thing to remember is f.d.a. is a true regulatory authority were after 0 is an association of state feed controls for szell's when you look at the manual i think you really begin to see how the interests of after the pet food industry alive actually putting together a list of ingredients that you would want to see and that was that you would want your pets to eat and then forcing that on the industry they've done it in reverse and basically just accepted the standards that the industry has been using for years and use of the term or claim natural and pet food labels so if i want to use the word natural on my dog food label sure are the rules and i'm quoting this verbatim a feed or ingredient drives solely from plant animal source either and it's

well coming up viewers from around the world live from central london this is not a u.k. . the transport secretary announces over 100000 daily tests have been carried out for code 19 for the government repeatedly failed to reach its target. and they chose e-mail claims coronavirus tests from commercial labs have disappeared into a day to black holes frustrating efforts part local authorities to get the crisis under control we're hearing from a disease expert it is really an embarrassment that we all not in a position to know what the test results are. and teach chinese racism souls in britain according to a report with some physically abused spat out and told to go back to china we hear from the professor behind the study. britain could face
1:01 pm
a legal challenge from the e.u. if it goes ahead with plans to exempt from this work 14 day quarantine travelers from aboard i'll be joined by a form of bricks apology any pain. and also of the online games golds to teach children the plenty of social distancing by getting them to connect mosques and avoid people busy streets in from one of the games creates its top psychologist professor richard wiseman. he's in poland in terms of communicating with kids he don't want scandal too much of that because the boss is a very scary message and so this is a fun way to do each cartoon characters in this rather common scenario but it has a very serious intent. the government announces it has finally reaches testing target of 100000 having failed 10 days out of 12 since its end of april target that his days of thousands
1:02 pm
of coronavirus tests has vanished into a black hole according to a leaked emails leaving local organizations without. information needed to foot the pending all the statistics watchdog reveals the truth of the u.k. one infection already here shut it was does she joins me live here in the studio and also we showed you the government has actually reached its testing told you well yes in today's daily press briefing grant shapps the transport secretary revealed that yes the government has indeed reached their own target of 826000 which is 26000 more than the government's deadline i'm target of 100000 however it's not actually that great news because the government has missed a majority of these deadlines and these targets this month in fact the government has missed 10 out of 12 days this month of course critics have long been concerned about this idea of testing throughout the whole of this lockdown period we know that hancock the house secretary at the beginning of april put forward this
1:03 pm
self-imposed deadline of 100000 tests every single day by the end of april and yes on deadline day the government was able to get to that deadline of 122000 tests however that leap in that sort of short amount of time really made many question the way the government is collecting that data some even suggesting reports even suggesting that the government changed the way of records and handles the data in order to meet this deadline but this isn't the only blunder of the day when it comes to testing that comes as the health service journal has just got its hands on an e-mail that was written from by the n.h.s. which essentially reveals that tens of thousands of covert 19 q work tests have reportedly gone missing vanishing into a data black hole that specifically refers to test completed outside the n.h.s. so in commercial labs from home testing and drive through kits the issue is though without the information local authorities and organizations do not know exactly how
1:04 pm
many people in the area have tested positive meaning they can't respond adequately or efficiently. nor are they able to work out the capacity for any more tests according to the methodology though it's understood that data on a regional capacity often outbreak is absolutely crucial for the testing and tracing and tracking program that's been implemented by the government even more roaringly though with all of this majority of the tests have been conducted in commercial capacities rather than the n.h.s. in fact 60 percent and we understand that 7000 people have tested positive have had their data lost meaning that g.p.'s cannot understand the true scale of the crisis in the local areas well last week the chief medical officer chris witty he apologised that this test data wasn't available for local n.h.s. teams that comes after schools of g.p.'s were complaining they had no idea about the disease clusters in the area well since the government has responded admitting
1:05 pm
to a technical fault but says it's now resolved. data is not disappearing and there was a recent technical error related to post code data but this is now been fixed and to fully correct to data flow was issued last week this did not prevent public health bodies from undertaking contact tracing of those with positive results now we also asked the n.h.s. for comment but in fact they just referred us to the part department for health and social care however this crisis here in england is not just happening here it's happening in scotland as well as ministers are as well concerned and their health boards and still unable to see the results of coronavirus tests that's actually since april and it's because of again continuing problems with processing data and show there's been a big study in the infection level in the country know absolutely and we've got the latest statistics from the office for national statistics giving
1:06 pm
a true sense of the amount of people who have contracted the virus in the country so between april the 27th and the 10th of may an average of 0.27 percent of the population in england how did it that's around 150000 people now the stats are based on a sample of 10000 individuals but what it tells you is about one in 400 people in england have had the virus however if the stats are correct there are essentially mold and double the government's official figures this comes as the government's official death toll figures are also in in the last 24 hour period there's been a leap of $428.00 deaths a jump back to the higher levels we've seen taking the total to 33614 deaths across the united kingdom since the pandemic 1st broke out should you thank you very much indeed for all of the. experts in infectious diseases professor lord young told me that the whole approach to testing needs an overhaul. i think we there's
1:07 pm
a lack of joined up thinking probably within the public health england approach to this we know that many real operatives within hospitals have the capacity to do these tests and i think this almost panic at the very beginning to create these lighthouse beacons of testing hasn't really worked out as well as the government anticipated so therefore boris johnson suggesting 200005 the end of this month that's impossible it looks that way at the moment absolutely i'm very concerned about creating an arbitrary numbers clearly it's essential that we're testing people in hospitals and we know that's happening now and we know that fortunately the number of hospitalized patients with kobe 9000 is reducing the biggest challenge of all and the most significant thing is how we ease locked down without knowing where the virus is so if we're very serious about this test track trace approach we need testing out in the community and we need more than 200000 tests
1:08 pm
and knowing where the virus is is also being could tell by the fact that there are claims of data going missing how on earth can happen i really don't understand what's going on here i'm not privy to the inside of all of this but it is really an embarrassment that we are not in a position to know what the what the test results are and that's just seems to be crazy and again a very serious issue about pap's a lack of joined up thinking in the way that we're managing this public health crisis. leading academics who suggested over 100000 people could die from the virus if the current restrictions are lifted too quickly researchers from university college london analyzed just under 4000000 health records to find out how many could die of the disease the report published in the lancet stating between 37073000 excess deaths in addition to those who have already. passed away
1:09 pm
the findings are based upon a data model that takes into account a range of variables including age sex and underlying health problems well the author of the report dr. g. told me earlier that vulnerable people in society should go back to work until social distancing measures can be employed properly or both work and on public transport we know from the data from several sources including office of national statistics including the national intensive care audit that the lion's share of the excess deaths of a kid due to kind of virus are in people with underlying conditions and people who are over the age of 70 and these are the people in the year now it's meant for the government on march 16th who were told to take particular care and socially isolate yes so is the solution then if you're looking at the start reality we got some really is that lockdown at some stage haven't we here in the country and therefore
1:10 pm
just keeping the vulnerable in isolation for longer and letting the less vulnerable to healthier people get on with life. so there there are a group known by the government as a stream of vulnerable with rhetoric conditions who have been told to isolate and be shielded for the 3 months 12 weeks and this group known to man with the more common conditions such as heart disease chronic lung disease diabetes and other conditions like this i would advise that when we're easing lock down we should not be encouraging people to go back to work until we're sure that the work place is the transport networks and so on can can be be able to socially isolate probably. let's turn to the latest figures as they emerge from the home nations n.h.s. england has reported 207 more fatalities in the past 24 hours the scottish 1st
1:11 pm
minister confirms 34 deaths in scotland wales has reported 10 and northern and 5 a former director of the world health organization has told storm and he's please northern ireland is taking a different approach to the virus to england we monitor senior scottish national party politicians as coronavirus could help pave the way to scottish independence accusing westminster of incompetence over its response and that disproportionately high amount of people are dying from code 900 in the poorest areas of wales according to official data with us have a look at how things are fairing globally and over 4300000 have been infected more than 299000 have died and as you can see there over one and a half 1000000 have now recovered well that's according to johns hopkins university which collates worldwide data the u.s. is considering threatening china with sanctions over its handling of coronavirus it comes as china sanctions australian beef in bali after it called for an inquiry into the origins of the global pandemic meanwhile the u.s.

secretary of state comes under scrutiny after being spotted wearing virtually no protective gear on his trip to israel. still to come. and teach chinese racism souls amid the pandemic according to a report we have from the professor behind the study. and also begin you could face a legal challenge if he goes ahead with plans to exempt from and of and for the 14 day quarantine travelers from abroad we'll be hearing shortly from a form of. an online game teaches children the importance of social distancing to join the president if this professor richard wiseman creates at the game.

so what we've got to do is identify the threats that we have it's crazy to. let it be an arms race in this on off and spearing dramatic development that only really exists i don't see how that strategy will be successful very critical time time to sit down and talk. report reveals anti chinese racism assault in the u.k. with a certain will lead to recuse of inflaming the situation. he has a story. i would like to begin by announcing some important developments in a war against the chinese virus it's not racist at all in the literal it comes from china that's what comes from china to be accurate as well they're losing their lives everywhere in the world and maybe that's
1:15 pm
a question you should ask china. don't ask me has china that question ok the us president and allied countries continue to blame china for the spread of the corona virus but all the general scientific consensus is that the wildlife markets of. where the breeding ground for the fallout is being felt by innocent people of chinese heritage including some of the 400000 who live right here in the u.k. because the one where people are being deliberately and obviously being avoided and shunned the people crossing the street couldn't they just because open up that is what it cost and this is before long time before lock up chinese aren't restaurants where the 1st to suffer when patrons does that long before lockdown measures were implemented but now it appears the situation has escalated to out right hostility and racism much of it towards people who were born and raised their whole

lives in the u.k. we have examples of people who. are resigning from jobs because they get so much abuse on trains and somebody gets stuck taking out morning jog because he was getting at use professor condo's report found people of chinese heritage being spat out physically abused and even told to go back to china half of the 412 people he surveyed said they'd experienced an increase in discrimination since the corona virus outbreak began of 3rd said they'd in counted and tea chinese racism in a public place 3 in 10 had experienced it in the workplace while 16 percent of the abuse took place on public transport now with the lockdown finally big lifted left some fearing that the hatred will only get worse as i was getting on the train stopped walking stick case to the station and i felt something hit my head.

despite here and i looked up and of these 2 men looking down at me. i actually shouted up at them and says did you because they were looking down at me and i said did you just like touch my hair if i liked spit so did you just special me. i'm just really in shock and disbelief because nothing like this is ever. before the crime figures certainly reflect those experiences and police forces report that hate crimes against chinese people have risen to $267.00 in the 1st 3 months of this year including physical assault and criminal damage that's 3 times the number reported in the previous 2 years and to professor khandala it's obvious what's fuelling it the you know so you've got the the the the so styled leader of the free world blaming charlie and he did it again and he's consistently doing it
1:18 pm
and it gives license to people i think to be a cold sue exercise their own prejudices the kind of divisive rhetoric we've seen coming from some leaders may just be a weapon in the trade and to a political war between china and the west before those feeling the impact of it on the streets of the united kingdom it's anything but again it's leaving many of them questioning their place in a society which is the only one they've ever known. of the u.k. but. the e.u. could sing the u.k. if it pushes ahead with plans to exempt from on and from a 14 day quarantine on travelers from abroad speaking on sunday the prime minister said that new quarantine measures would apply to travelers coming from france at this stage comes off the french president to monte concessions in a phone call with boris johnson but experts warn that such

a move could result in the u.k. facing a costly legal challenges remain subject to the european court of justice until the end of the transition period in december this year meanwhile euro skeptic m.p.'s urged the government to stand up to the block. so once we make that judgment about what works for the greatest safety of people in the u.k. . it is time for us to stand up for ourselves and do what we think is right people want to get bricks it done they'll be surprised 1st time we tried to take but contro we end up being sued. under current plans anyone flying into the country will remain in isolation for 14 days to prevent coronavirus being brought in from overseas it would also apply to british travelers returning from holiday passengers could be forced to provide an address at the border and those breaching the quarantine could pay a fine or face being deported however the final decision is yet to be taken it took to the streets to get reaction about french being examined. bizarre the whole
1:20 pm
notion that i don't understand i don't some why they would be exempt to be qualified to be because they're infected lot like most of the whoa from any where you're coming from in this country you should be quarantined from frons germany any where you're coming from you should be put in quarantine because remember the virus is. over there too so i think that they should people make a. transparent 2 rounds and then. you say well that's not a point in 4th place will fill that and. kill the thing one country gets away with that. well for more on this i'm not joined by former party m.e.p. robert roden robot very good of you to be with us we're still in the transition period all we have course we start to play by the rules and that means a special exemptions for france or. well you're right technically we are still part of the european union for this transition period which comes to an end.
1:21 pm
obviously the end of this year but we do have a critical juncture coming up unless that's what's about 6 weeks the 1st of july when we have to either agree to extend or continue with the existing timetable but is it isn't it interesting that the e.u. now is decided despite all the obviously the crisis going on on the priority as they should be setting the pandemic that chosen to have a fight with the u.k. over sensually an arrow or a competent taking back control of our borders i'm not allowing the british government to decide who comes in and the terms on which they come in so i mean private facie it does look like discrimination and i'm sure the the you will act and they've already issued legal proceedings sokol intrenchments process of failing to comply with the free movement rule but i think this sets up. essentially
1:22 pm
a fake a fake fight on one the where i think that they will they will have to back down because frankly they have so many other issues they have to deal with but these are special times roman of course the u.k. standing up to the e.u. obviously people like yourself are urging the government to do that stand up against the block but look these are exhort extraordinary circumstances we should actually all be standing together against the virus that's a priority isn't it. while it's again it's interesting because the whole issue that if you like the 3 of the main pillars of the opinion of free freedom of movement of capital and people and they've essentially been. the whole operators of those 3 pillars of of being removed because as we know the schengen agreement which does allow free movement to member states which obviously we were never in has now been essentially abandoned because now member states are putting up orders so. we are seeing if you like the failure of multilateral organizations like the e.u.
1:23 pm
and we are seeing the reassertion of sovereignty and member states because of our own like a global pandemic like this only the nation state can make these critical decisions on on the how who comes into the country quarantine levels and the way obsolete to deal with it medically so i do find that fascinating and against all the see a backdrop where last week the e.c. j. was seen to have acted ultra vires i.e. outside of its perimeter of law the german high court which ruled that the the european central bank acted outside of its competent in terms of quantitative easing a monetary finance in member states so the ears got so many big issues all happening at the same time and it looks like a perfect storm for them you mention that were borders and of course that was a major issue in all the press it discussions and argument and done
1:24 pm
a few of it where the u.k. government has just told a committee instalment that there will be physical post at northern ireland's ports ahead of the end of this breaks a transition period that is totally country to what the prime minister promises in it what do you make of that. well again i haven't looked at the details on that bill obviously it does seem that it's a departure from what was stated earlier i don't know whether that's been put in place for medical purposes and i talked see it being done on and for the purposes of the breaks it deal to say as you know northern ireland is in that unique position of being able to be both part of the single market and still within the united kingdom and so has tariff free access to century to both markets sure and i appreciate your not up to speed because they were a long way from here at the moment but of course this issue is something that it is been central to much of the breaks it discussion and the wire ease about carving up
1:25 pm
the u.k. any form of border checks. put in the hours see well that that is the beginning of the end of the union isn't there and this is something you all of us are being challenged with as a pro breaks in any pain yes and i wish we had stood publicly the brakes at party when all the see when were the european parliament behind. the ulster unionists on this i'm stating that the integrity not a key note was 1st and foremost and it was paramount now i i have gone through the agreement with northern ireland i actually think that there's a lot of confusion about the actual borders i there is going to be no i don't think that's going to be a physical border that we will call from the days of the troubles what i think they are talking about overseas electronic issues i don't think is going to be border posts military that sort of thing it will be purely if you like that either
1:26 pm
medically that kind of issue or or on goods and services but right now frankly there are no there's no trading going on whatsoever so those are either. said a no deal breaks it which in my opinion now looks like an 80 percent probability whereas at the end of january when we left the european union like a $5050.00 i think now it's basically almost a foregone conclusion but we'll move to a double clean break bricks it because frankly and the any theoretical economic impact from the no deal which i never excepted anyway are irrelevant now because we have no trade our economy is going to be falling by at least 3040 percent in the 2nd quarter roland thank you for joining us live here in our u.k. thank you so much bill and finally a free online games aim to teach children the importance of social distancing during the coronavirus crisis develops in just 2 weeks can you save the world
1:27 pm
racked up $10000.00 plays in its 1st 2 days you should be staying in but if you have to go out to get a new save the world players must keep their distance from others walking and cycling on the street as well as avoiding sneezers gathering healthy snacks keeps you in the game longer are collecting and 80 mosques helps you saying more lives the final score is based on how many lives have been saved by those actions. well earlier i spoke with one of the game's co-design his world renowned professor of psychology richard wiseman he told me people of all ages a cable of adapting to the new changes despite the uncertainty we've had about a 3rd of players say that when they go outside to get that behavior feels different because of it by think what is important terms of communicating with kids is that you don't want to scare them too much and of course the virus is a very scary message and so this is a fun way of doing it cartoon characters in this rather fancy naleo but it has a very serious intent so fingers crossed it will change the way people think and
1:28 pm
how they behave you're obviously not just a game creator your a world famous expert in psychology and behavioral science what do you make of the adult reaction to the lockdown. well it's we're seeing a lot of variation of what people need to understand is that it is for everyone's good not only their own benefit but if we're socially distanced you know obviously you stay healthier but you don't pass any affections on to others and actually as you said the scoring the game reflects that so if you don't pass the infection on to others they can't pass it on to other people and so you really do save lots of lives i think it's a really important message when it comes to social distancing life is going to be very different isn't it what do you think though if we try to talk about getting back to normal with life but what will this sort of new normal look like in in a few months or indeed a few years from now i've no idea i don't think anyone knows than that because that's part of the anxiety about this is the uncertainty what we do know is we are
1:29 pm
pretty resilient folks and we're also very plastic we are very good at modifying ourselves to change so you've seen behavior modifications already right across the world so actually i'm fairly optimistic about the future and also what you've seen is a lot of helping behavior obviously people the frontline but people helping within their communities so i think there's reason for optimism i hope the going reflects that in lots of ways i don't think it is going to be all doom and gloom in the future there's a lot of uncertainty but i think we are in a good position to deal with that psychologically that's all for this are our colleagues of america will take over the top of the next hour from all of us here in westminster thanks for watching and goodbye.
1:30 pm
