drops decades ago is the u.s. making the moves for the tragedy. built to the people in that little. hello there i'm watching in question broadcasting from our to america national news headquarters here in washington d.c. we want to welcome our viewers from across the nation and all around the world here are tonight's top stories 1st in virus stricken new york the governor there now tapping private investors to help with the state's coronavirus response that's stirring a lot of criticism all the details next in a full report. hoping to boost the auto industry after taking a hit thousands of workers are headed back to building cars again but this is more lou we're going to discuss then a massive explosion rocks downtown l.a. over the weekend and now federal investigators will be joining that probe to find
5:01 pm
out what caused this explosion all right it's time for your newsnight you. are at the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold tracking this global outbreak here the worldwide numbers now topping 4700000 cases with 316000 reported deaths then taking a closer look at the countries with the most confirmed cases the u.s. still leading the way followed then by russia and the u.k. and brazil trailing closely behind right here in the u.s. there are now some 1400000 cases of infections and about 89000 deaths and when virus stricken new york governor andrew cuomo is mapping out a plan to reopen the state and now he's tapping private investors to become part of the state's coronavirus response this move starring a lot of criticism all this as president meets with restaurant heads to discuss.
5:02 pm
what to expect in the coming weeks as trinity chavez has the report from new york. today officials slang the groundwork for what lies ahead dozens of states across the country reopening businesses parks and beaches but as most of the country is easing restrictions montana south dakota arkansas and maine are still seeing an increase of coronavirus cases hard hit new york mapping out a phased plan to reopen but governor cuomo says his state will have to keep its hands on the valves if the infection rate goes up the lower the infection rate. the more you will increase the economic activity it is a formula it is some area beaches and parks reopening large groups in new york seen across the city many violating social distancing restrictions gathering outside of bars and restaurants many of which are open for takeout new york city the epicenter of the outbreak far from out of the woods mayor bill de blasio doubling down on his decision to keep beaches in the city closed for memorial day weekend that's just
5:03 pm
the beach imagine the scene on the a train with people going out to the rockaways or any other train where people go the beach or the buses were not going to while they're crowding to happen so the word is no not yet and in neighboring new jersey hundreds of residents packed walkways and flocked to beaches many to get beach passes it's a beautiful day you have to be on line what better place to be a mom that it is the same time along our beautiful beach meantime back in new york officials continue to ramp up testing across the state now with more than $700.00 testing locations laboratories are carrying out about 40000 tests today governor cuomo getting tested himself during his live press conference on sunday that's it nothing else and as a state works to reopen the governors now enlisting a trio billionaires to help ramp up the state's coronavirus response microsoft co-founder bill gates a former google chief executive eric schmidt and former new york city mayor michael bloomberg. will spearhead the initiative the group will help trace the spread of
5:04 pm
the disease and think through how the state will look in the future just a few weeks ago when the trios names 1st became public local officials and education advocates blasted cuomo for depending on the wealthy and elected officials educators in particular called out bill and melinda gates for their foundation support for common core a controversial standardized testing program already implemented in new york and other states meantime in washington d.c. president trump is meeting today with restaurant executives to discuss the impact social distancing and say at home orders are having on their bottom line and i get to speak to restaurateurs every single day and i can confirm we desperately want to reopen. our restaurants or just in our hearts broken at this time we can provide the support in the comfort to communities in which we serve still those smaller rush from business owners argue that any financial help in the form of legislative relief packages may not be enough to reopen reporting in new york r.t.
5:05 pm
. monday tens of thousands of u.s. auto workers are headed back to factories in detroit chicago toledo louisville and kansas city as the 3 big automakers known as the detroit 3 have started building cars again but is this a smart move at this time when west coast and investigative journalist ben swan join me a little earlier to discuss here's our conversation. the majority of people are not interested right now in buying cars when you have about 35000000 people out of work right now you're not going to run on buy a new car you're going to take on more of that kind of a burden however. part of the reason that we need to see this move made by these big 3 as you mentioned which are really so for general motors and chrysler the reason that this needs to happen is because we need to get more people back to work and also fix supply chain issues just because people are buying cars to date. does
5:06 pm
it mean they won't want to buy cars in 6 months or a year and you need production facilities on line and production taking place in order to fulfill the orders that will come in the future and then what if any safety protocols are going to be put in place to protect these workers and also can i just add this other question is i thought president trump said g.m. was flipping their factories to make ventilators. right so g.m. was supposed to be flipping at least one factory to make ventilators but it's been very unclear as to exactly what that bill or that agreement was supposed to be because remember for a while g.m. said they would that they were charging an insane amount then they said they weren't there they said they were again and meanwhile what we have found in terms of into later is we have not had the need for ventilators as had been predicted by politicians and people at the top of the health circles like anthony who said we would need all these ventilators turns out we actually didn't need them and that goes back to what you just said there are still people getting sick yes but not in
5:07 pm
the mass numbers that has ever been predicted this thing is never taken off the way that was said so yes if we see more people start to go back to work there will be precautions for instance at these plants you have to wear a face mask if you're going to be at work going to do thermal readings and in temperature scans of people coming in and i got to tell you some of that stuff just doesn't make sense because most people who contract coronavirus are asymptomatic so you're not going to have a fever and the thermal imaging scans are going to tell you if someone has it they will also be conducting interviews with people asking them how they feel but again that doesn't stop the spread of it so so it's almost as if you're going through the motions of trying to stop the spread of corona virus without looking at what we know about the virus now and saying those things really won't change anything yet kind of sound a little in effect kind of like you know when there's one shoe bomber and now everybody needs to take their shoes off at the t.s.a. just saying that's commentary but let's go to good example let's shift gears here
5:08 pm
and yes car puns totally intended and talk about a new accusation from the chinese telecom company while way which is now claiming that the truck administration has damaged the global technology industry with this extended trade ban what if in relation to. yes in relation to the fact that if you go back into last year remember while way with us. actually part of this band not only to be used in the united states but there was a new trade ban that was put on selling simply conductors to walk away so companies in the united states that create semiconductors cannot sell them to while away for one way to use them and it actually hurts a semiconductor companies here in the u.s. and that's what wall weighs saying is that not only is the u.s. trying to hurt them but they're actually hurting businesses here and businesses that are trying to sell globally and trying to do business outside of the u.s. borders and what while way is saying is that the u.s. is actually harming companies beyond its own borders and they shouldn't have the right to do so when it comes back to that semiconductor issue and then here's
5:09 pm
a while way says they say this new rule will impact the expansion maintenance and continuous operations that networks worth hundreds of billions of dollars that we have rolled out in more than $170.00 countries what technology are they referring to yet this goes back to this this issue of semiconductors so what essentially they're doing right now is is the u.s. is saying you cannot sell some conductors who always are trying to injure while way and prevent them from being able to continue to develop their phones and gain market share while ways in the meantime look at. this business but the reality is that a lot of the semiconductor has come from the u.s. and it's it's it's a piece it's a cog in this whole supply chain process and by the u.s. cutting off this particular piece of that supply chain they do slow down while way to some extent but at the same time as we said they're severely hurting companies in the u.s. because remember a while weight is the largest now producer of or 2nd largest producer of phones around the world samsung's 1st while he's now 2nd an apple the 3rd so when you're
5:10 pm
cutting out the 2nd largest seller of phones from semiconductor developers in the united states you're harming them and i think it goes back to what george galloway and mike maloof were saying a minute ago which is that during this time when you would think that everyone's kind of focused on one thing instead the u.s. is kind of upping some of its attacks on some of these companies and you and i have talked about this it's one thing to be upping you know sanctions on cars. treats but to do it on private companies seems to be kind of the ultimate. i would have to agree we had to leave it right there unfortunately my friend ben swan thank you so much for that update. and over to los angeles now where firefighters were running for their lives this weekend barely escaping a massive explosion r.t. correspondent natasha sweet is in downtown los angeles with the details of this terrifying blaze. an explosion injuring 11 firefighters saturday night another 200 firefighters responding to the incident. very easy.
5:11 pm
to call we. turned a lot of our cars. well firefighters of engine 9 were working to put out a blaze in downtown los angeles according to the police chief something just didn't seem right at 1st there appeared to be only moderate smoke after opening up the building's still doors but when they went inside the smoke pressure was reportedly escalating the heat continue to increase from the back of the building and that's when the officer directed all of the firefighters to leave the building immediately as they were exit in an explosion erupted firefighters who were inside had a run through a wall of flames some 30 feet high and wide right down the center far. down their ladder from the roof there. are 11 members of engine 9 which is located in downtown los angeles right in the middle of skid row suffered serious and minor burns all are expected to survive according to the fire chief those who were not
5:12 pm
transported to the hospital were emotionally distraught or firefighter. directly and they're holding up. here all these injured. and at the time i. was talking to them we didn't know what extent. the fire reportedly started at smoke tokes warehouse distributor a supplier for businesses that make butane honey oil that eventually spread to nearby buildings firefighters were able to put out the flames in about an hour reporting in los angeles natasha sweet. and as really court today convicted a jewish extremist for the 2015 arson attack that killed a. palestinian toddler and his parents the court ruled bin lyall firebombs into the family's west bank home as they slept killing that 18 month old
5:13 pm
toddler that his mother and father later died from their injuries a 4 year old is the only family survivor. and in hong kong activists who led last year's massive protests are now on trial businessman jimmy lai former legislator martin and 13 other activists were arrested last month and accused of various charges related to those protests now anti-government demonstrators could be seen outside of the courthouse meantime the u.n. human rights office has called for the case against the activists to be dropped. and in eastern afghanistan suicide bombers targeted a base belonging to the country's intelligence service killing 7 members of the force injuring 40 others according to officials the bomber used a stolen military humvee and detonated the vehicle that was full of explosives at the main entrance the taliban has claimed responsibility for this bombing. and brock obama takes a swipe at president trump and trump of course hits back where's the decorum

right we'll see you church generations look back at the establishment media as the lead in the water pipes that drove the romans mad do you find yourself watching t.v. to turn your brain off to relax i want you to watch t.v. to turn your brain on i'm rick sanchez. it's time. to do news again. a recent op ed in the new york times claims that former president obama lives in trump's head and is titled just that times opinion columnist charles blow makes
5:17 pm
some scathing remarks or perhaps assumptions as to what president trump is thinking and why america elected him and 2816 so joining us to discuss this very hot topic legendary broadcaster and host of politicking our friend larry king so larry 1st as a disclaimer to the viewers we should let them know that you have actually known donald trump for many decades so what do you make of this recent opinion piece by charles blow we know it's an opinion piece he has the right to his opinion but in terms of the journalistic times that we live in there's a piece like this do more harm than good. i don't know i don't know you know become and go i know charles blow and that's going to be that's yesterday's news by the way we discuss this at length tomorrow with governor chris christie the former governor of new jersey he's our guest on politics of the prime no trouble will soar to year in or bomb of mark was i think one of the problems that the translation is
5:18 pm
is you strictly off the wall to call for bomb of the worst president we've ever had as of shared. what by the way maybe you have the answer in the one else seems to what is old bomb a gate. you know wary you've got me stumped i've been i've been looking all over for what the indictment is or could be would be i was hoping you were going to know the answer because like you said if it's not out there nobody else. i don't know of any crime that obama committed and i like when trump says everybody knows that's their favorite done a lot of those men don't always like everybody knows. now i'm getting old or your armor where you criminal or you know the guy why does why do you speak in platitudes like that that's that's from who donald is there so where he was a bird is opposing realtors in new york donald trump is off the top often does not
5:19 pm
think before he speaks frankly he sometimes lies he is in pretty rare the likable are always kind no it was always kind of mean to my why when i would i spend a few days in a new york house for dinner he always took care me it has hotels so i have nothing personal bad to say about him but as a president where he lacks what he lacks something that's very essential in presence he lacks empathy you know you can picture him like what or what obama did brilliantly on their graduation show yesterday. now there could be done that larry the implication in this article though is that donald trump is a racist and that he is dwelling on his hatred of ana i mean given that you do know him what do you make of that accusation you think it's true. i don't think so i
5:20 pm
don't think he's racist i think he takes advantage of anything he sees if he thinks that whites are going to elect him he'd take advantage of that it's crass but no i don't think at heart yeah i don't think it parties are racists or lol certainly a lot of this public all the churches look that way yeah and larry a hell of an election year by the way i mean we can have elections i mean we're drawing closer to the november elections it is shaping up to look like a general election race already even though the d.n.c. hasn't had a convention you and i ready discussed this we don't know if the convention is actually going to happen but we've got to be biden versus trump if you look at the t.v. look at social media especially on twitter you would think that obama versus trump in november there's not a lot of joe biden floating around the media sphere why is president obama suddenly now breaking his silence you think there's anything odd with the timing i think obama's speaking out because he knows the joe biden's in the folksy sequestered he
5:21 pm
can go to the campaign trail obama's free to do anything he like and i think is finally hit obama but all these criticisms over the past few years of finally getting to him he's human. i don't think for example obama is do you see that show us that the did they graduate of merit already here no no i guess. you could not a picture trump doing obama is eloquent and trump is kind of envious of that eloquence you know you don't you don't have many people has a record as barack obama sore trouble getting into the gutter with them. obama's a very popular ex-president with the next 1st lady who was fabulous person in the world from maybe true dangerous water here maybe so the last word on this do you think president trump should be picking a fight with former president obama. i was saying no 'd but you never know when
5:22 pm
donald trump would get i don't think he should pick on obama obama is very popular in america traum has his base of the base will always stay with them but i don't see anything beyond the base when you were tag obama who is today the most popular political figure in america so i think it's a mistake but it is trump and you never count trunk vote well i hope your old friend is listening and hears that because there's probably nothing good that will come out of picking a fight with barack obama that we will see larry king as always appreciate your insight thank you. thank you dear. over to canada now where a fly over to pay tribute to front line workers during this pandemic took a turn for the worse and aerobatic jet known as a snow bird crashed into a british columbia neighborhood killing one crew member on board seriously injuring another and setting a house on fire as

a result the morale boosting mission now prime hold prime minister justin trudeau sent his condolences to the members of the snowbirds. and a federal judge has denied martin better known as the farmer bro his request to leave prison so he could research a cure for cove at 19 he says the judge sided with officials stating that squarely failed to demonstrate adequate grounds for release based on his reasons surely is currently serving a 7 year sentence for defrauding investors. 3. live united launch alliance and it was find rocket with us in a sort of 7 for the united states space force on a mission dedicated to america's from. the u.s. military space plane blasted off into orbit once again only this time with an extra load of science experiments spacecraft x. $37.00 b.

was launched on board a united launch alliance atlas 5 rocket from cape canaveral in florida this sunday but adding to the plane's mystery is the fact that officials aren't saying how long the spacecraft will remain in orbit or the purpose of this mission the previous mission lasted a record 2 years with a touchdown shrouded in darkness that now says kennedy space center last year. all right let's head over to regina ham at the sports h.q. we're going to soccer over an england might be starting to get the gears going on resuming the season i hear that would be exciting for them because soccer leagues across europe are now beginning to emerge from their lock downs and go back to training the most notable being german top tier blueness league that help families games over the weekend now england's top squad is signaling they're ready to get the ball rolling all pun intended to bring back the game premier league shareholders voted unanimously to allow small group training to begin as early as tomorrow the step one of the return to training protocol allows squads to train more maintaining social distancing contact drills are not allowed until proved by
5:25 pm
the league testing for kobe 19 a top flight clubs took place of the last 2 days and will continue to make sure that the environment is safe as possible there are still 92 games to play left on the premier league calendar and surprisingly many clubs are actually split on if they want to return play was suspended on march 13th and while no date for match play was fixed it's a step in the right direction to get players back on the pitch. and speaking of sports impacted there's no doubt that the current virus changed the landscape of it and including the postponement of the 20 tokyo olympics former olympic swimmer and maurice academy member mark spitz commented on the impact of kobe 19 and how it brought back memories of his own traumatic olympic moment. it's made a limpet history of the 1972 munich olympic games when he won 7 gold medals and set 7 swimming world records but sadly that was all overshadowed when palestinian terrorist group black september attacked israeli athletes 40 years later 1000 year old praise of the i.o.c. for their response to the vet and then and the crown are a virus pandemic now tokyo games are moved to september summer 2021 and have
5:26 pm
largely been a math of talking point in the sports world spitz think that was a move in the right direction out of abundant safety for athletes and fans and also give some insight into the feelings of the athletes after months of preparations for they iconic event take a listen yes please who are prepared to compete you know with the games in tokyo just months from now originally playing. certainly that was a big disappointment for all that were concerned again. with positive is the international of the committee to the right moves. and you know it's really good to see that you're seeing leeds return it's good that you see former olympians on that side and on the note of things coming back as well texas and california are both edging to try to allow pro teams to or terminal but let's be real fans should buy tickets they likely won't be allowed to attend yeah i don't what about people that already own season tickets though they're putting in like policies for refunds or
5:27 pm
maybe going hey 2100 tickets are good for then but you know it's a small start we had nascar weekend golf they both were held families but you know nascar driver said it's really not that different if you're in the car you can hear fans anyway you know for them not a big deal but for baseball players or football players basketball i mean those are more contact it does but it is a big difference and you know they said they're going to pipe fan sounds in the stadium which a lot of college teams do to practice to get used to the noise but it's not the same yet definitely not the same so we will see i guess it's a whole new world regina will thank you for that and you don't go anywhere because we're back at 7 pm with a lot more news for you including his death of the chinese ambassador to israel we're going to tell you what investigators are saying and his recent critical comments towards one top u.s. official find out who we've got all that and more coming up at 7 pm that's it for right now make sure you keep up with everything in question at all times by downloading our brand new free app called portable t.v. you can watch 247 their text up on anything you might have missed
