8:00 pm
what i think is this is the fund that is. violent confrontations with the police buildings torched and the looting across the united states as americans vent their rage for a 4th day over the deaths in police custody of george for. the stuff that's not going to be with you don't hold your partner accountable this is it this is. from l.a. to new york riot police use anti crowd to tools in clashes with protesters as sporadic violence continues to break out over the weekend in america.
8:01 pm
and in stark contrast to those scenes of looting and violence have been peaceful marches in memory of george floyd in some parts of the country as more cities announce plans to hold community vigils. are broadcasting live from our studios in moscow this is r.t. international i'm john thomas certainly glad to have you with us. civil unrest is spreading across the united states as anger over the death of george floyd at the hands of minneapolis police boils over demonstrations have erupted in cities across the country since the fatal incident last monday amid looting torched buildings and a violent clashes with police the mayor of minneapolis has announced the full mobilization of the national guard it is the 1st time that that has happened since
8:02 pm
world war 2. what. if they don't want to give us justice and they're not going to be any peace so much go we are tired his name was george clooney. i want i want shane broke we all want change. we got white people back here storm national buildings in the state in the country's capital with a yours but if they see us with a rock they can shoot us in the face of the rubber bullet if they see us with anything that looks like a good they don't kill it on a daily basis. this
8:03 pm
is what you get when you don't hold other cops accountable when you let them kill other people when you let them kill us when you don't hold your partner accountable this is it this is. protesters have been targeting police stations and patrol cars during the week they were demanding the arrest of the officer who kneeled on floyd's neck before he died something that has now happened on a target of 3rd degree murder in the fatal arrest happened on monday and 3 other officers stood by as floyd was pinned to the ground by a mini for almost 10 minutes earlier i spoke with george floyd's uncle about the tragic event. my cousin go. begging to suffering and dying. if we were to check it to share just it seems like that would be. a murder he had never seen anybody executed. by
8:04 pm
100000000 people in the world saying my nephew had security because he called for his mother which passed 3 years ago tomorrow and. he went blank and. he's never said another word and this young man that stood over him what his name on his name he had a. a monster look in his eye like you know what. this is my job to give us literally that's what it same like. a didn't have no emotions he didn't have any good look at it in remorse it like he was posing after a big animal kill a big gang was totally what it looked like you were just standing there. just absolutely blank. they said that my nephew died at the hospital well. there was troubling 30 people standing around there's an angel and her name is
8:05 pm
darnell well fraser that took the video and i'll talk to her several times and she's told me she's like mr jones like an. idealized way to you know what we've got some in common watching just a young lady because i same. pitch come in your nephew's eyes and. i know on the streets of minneapolis minnesota at 5 o'clock in the military act and then his young men literally executed my nephew and he didn't look like he. cared whatsoever. and they came they arrested him the particular one to head his knee on his neck yesterday. and the other 4 there was told there and the other 3 has not been. has not even been approached. all right over 30 cities in the u.s. have seen protests curfews have been imposed across minnesota but also in denver
8:06 pm
louisville and portland as well the national guard has been drafted in for a number of states over in brooklyn new york thousands took to the streets and clashed with police freelance journalist william whiteman was following events for us. i'm now standing in front of a line of police. just moments ago and i sank just completely unprovoked to different police than what we've been seeing the rest of the march so i think getting over it there was no middle east offices no weapons or anything like that we now have police with billy clubs and attacked demonstrators completely unprovoked i would be people who are completely oh no. it was a very very aggressive show of force the police are definitely a lot more militarized now it's going to take you down to the from we've got a line of.
8:07 pm
still covering all of those developments for us in new york freelance journalist william whiteman live for us again there in brooklyn now you have witnessed some very harrowing moments for us what is the situation like right there on the ground there in brooklyn. so what does happen what is happening now is you've got 2 key elements now within the process that you've got not the original we're going to have this protest to have been going around actively trying to dissuade people from engaging in confrontations with the new york police department and then you have another slightly younger element which is going around and carrying out attacks. on police. i saw one play out just before my eyes couple of minutes ago if you can see down here
8:08 pm
well the lights. there were. several. through that something to the breaking out. there was several police officers who became isolated because barricades were put out in front of the police car. and they're effectively ambushed there were several projects i was flown if you can see this one of the cars from the bus now it's pretty smashed up several projects i was frightened the police go out of the car and then a number of the organizers from the protest surrounded the police officers to protect them and stop them being harmed they actually actively intervened to stop the police officers being harmed and an elderly woman in the neighborhood jumped on top of a car and was yelling at the protestors to disperse so we're really starting to see 2 narratives now you've got a younger very very angry group of protesters that are that are actively engaging
8:09 pm
in attacks whereas earlier on in the day you had unprovoked attacks by the n.y.p.d. on protesters which is today is going on things are really heating up certainly not use for us the ponderous and as we've seen in the previous days of protests when that happens. you know how tense to break loose but here in downtown brooklyn where we are now it has been. just pandemonium for the last couple of hours i would say. the last journalist there in brooklyn new york saying across the scene that it has the potential to get even crazier through the night so please stay safe for us ok. right after protests overnight on friday the new york police department claimed agitators were at play in the city we not just the police department but all of new york city suffered last night after professional and organized agitators
8:10 pm
cause havoc on the city resulting in violence injured police offices and the destruction of property. police violence against america's black community has long and fueled calls for reform and yet the country still sees a significant number of deadly incidents we spoke with educator and activist atoki wright whose aunt died after an incident involving the police usually there's no outcome that includes justice we're dealing with the fact that our skin has a certain tone that people treat you differently and it doesn't matter if you are walking your dog in central park and you're a harvard graduate or if you live in boise idaho and you are you know whatever your background is as long as you are in the skin you know some people call it the skin that you're in is the sin and so you're treated as less equal you're treated as equal and so imagine being a large black man being
8:11 pm
a strong physically strong looking black man you automatically being approached with. with with violence as a 1st resort and it's just a ongoing pattern of abuse the amount of pressure that black people go through every day you you know people would be a jumping off a bridge every day if they had to live in the skin that we live in. but what has to happen is that police officers need to be held accountable for their actions they need to be and other police officers when they see wrongdoing need to actually speak up and say something is wrong or something caught them to want to have you know this code of silence that happens where police officers are not speaking up and in this case we see a lot of police officers in other cities speaking up but we really need to see minneapolis and st paul police officers speak up and say that this is wrong because anybody with any kind of sense can look at that video and see that that is a murderer. the mayor of minneapolis is urging the public to stay home explaining
8:12 pm
that large crowds gives cover to people intent on committing crime they also called violent riots riots domestic terrorism many of the areas that have been in protest over george floyd's death have also seen significant looting here you can see scenes in portland where people are emptying out an apple store. and anybody comes by for the water you know so they can feel welcome and hopefully you know this will hold it will come and destroy our property here. well you did. the right we lived through it right you know.
8:13 pm
pretty crazy or just this one actually going to go back down the river some people businesses around it like that. but you got to see if you're going to do it together do it. in his latest speech the us president donald trump slammed the riots on protesters while hinting that the unrest will and very soon the mobs are devastating the life's work of good people and destroying their dreams right now america needs creation not destruction. cooperation not contempt security not anarchy and there will be no anarchy my administration will stop. mob violence. and we'll stop it cold. we can now cross the line to quiet a picket a local activist from minneapolis thank you for being with us here on our 2 international help really tell the story. we see the pictures we
8:14 pm
can see part of what's going on but we're not there you were there what was it like being a part of the protests and what are we missing well reality is there are a great number of people were here to protest peacefully what change were here to demand accountability and want to be a part. of the air in the streets demanding justice because they want to long to be not handed. what i witnessed the great number of people where they are for the right reason who are demanding accountability and who stand together in unity. in the faintest oh the under arrest that's happened there is a tremendous spirit of connectedness a tremendous spirit of unity and there are a number of people who are taking the streets taking to the streets today in resilience to clean up in to be a part of demanding change so we want to make sure that the true part of the story
8:15 pm
about the resilience and the commitment to the community pushing forward is a part of the narrative that is brought to you and touched on something that's very important here the different people have different reasons for showing up what message did you want to get across why is this personal for you. well it's important personal for me because i think we all have a responsibility to commit to our community and of course to commit to humanity i want to be part of the solution whether it was being there to serve the community and cleaning the air in protest to demand accountability be there to bring supplies because that was part of the reason i was there is well if we think about the people that have been impacted by this tragedy we have to understand that this is ongoing work and you have to be there together not just today not just from our room but for the time ahead this is going to take the time that we have to be committed so what about the claims that violence is just be getting more violence
8:16 pm
there's a lot of misunderstanding some people are saying that the looting and the protests are 2 completely separate things that some of the chaos is being sold by opposition groups. what right do the protesters think that they have during a pandemic considering that their actions could endanger many more people and exacerbate the crisis as well i mean there's so many different factors at play here well i think if you want to realize that the people who are risking their lives to be a part of the protest a lot of the cleanup because they see the need for great action part of the reason folks are there it is because they want to make a change in the face of fighting for our humanity as it relates to this and then they were fighting for the humanity of other people the people are there for a reason and that the where there's a demand change so the officers who knelt on george floyd has been charged with 3rd
8:17 pm
degree murder there are debates as to whether he will actually end up being sentenced for that or not of course we have to wait for the court system for him to go through that. is this part of what you wanted to achieve is to make sure that he is brought to justice. well i think that people are there to demand justice we know that charge and those charges are not enough certainly the people want more and people want all of the officers how to count. i know that this is going to ask you to speculate a little bit and that maybe is a bigger question than any one person can answer but what actually needs to happen to get people off the streets so that we can resolve the situation safely well i don't think there is an easy answer to the people are there because the demand justice and accountability and as you question earlier number of people are there for various reasons i think. more than anything people are there because they want
8:18 pm
to be heard you're reminded of the worst disasters in jim you shared with. why in the name we just heard this is because they want to hear and we want to hear . what they read. can certainly. help. so minnesota 'd is obviously the epicenter of all of this that's where the original incident took place of course there have been protests all over the country now even going into the 4th night the governor of minnesota says that violence that we are seeing around the country is not only about george floyd's death. what else is it about if not only about george for the death but also has some of the protests have they been hijacked. well we have to understand there is a long history of trauma in this country associated with oppression to people of
8:19 pm
african descent the african-american community has long faced significant violence at the hands of law enforcement and this is a part of the conversation on the people want heard they want to countability and certainly they want transparency as it comes to prosecution as it relates to law enforcement there are a number of issues that is an incident that happened all around this country and folks want to like shall not let those incidents or shine on those incidents and certainly they want justice and so that's why the people who are there if we look at the history of this country we know we have a lot to end the war and we have a lot of work to do and certainly that's a part of this discussion. in terms of the protesters themselves we've heard thugs we've heard from the president even we've heard looters we've heard some of our guests have said that this is more of a rebellion as opposed to being
8:20 pm
a protest. do you think there will be or should be consequences for those who are violating the civil laws during this unrest. i think that it depends on the situation in the context in which individuals were part of what they were part of what i've witnessed in when i've been a part of our people who are there who are demanding justice in people who are there to bring supplies for those in need and people who are there because they care about their community and they're invested in their computer right clyde pickett i want to thank you for your voice for speaking with us here on r.t. international it certainly is a trying time the united states all over the country and it is important to hear you a local activists from minneapolis who has some firsthand accounts of the situation thanks for being with us our to international thank you and keep us in the regions stay safe. and the governor of minnesota has urged the public to stay home amid the unrest saying it's the only option to avoid the chaos i just i am bringing out
8:21 pm
everyone who's voice in community is so much stronger than mine i'm bringing out lived experiences to tell people it is going to be incredibly dangerous we have trained professionals out there but the people that are there don't wear uniforms don't play by rules and don't share values they will intentionally create chaos we will do our very best to preserve. ignaty rule of law but we have got to clear our streets we cannot show up patients or people who care nothing about anything. lee merritt the civil rights attorney representing george floyd's family described to us a longstanding pattern of police brutality against ethnic minorities in the united states. america's the deadliest police culture in the modern world there is no nation on the planet that kills in the car so it's more of us people we are in a crisis position tony ben crump and i announced this morning that we are taking
8:22 pm
these families the family of george floyd a model be on a taylor to washington d.c. and we want to discuss comprehensive police reform we're all screwed bringing this case before the united nations human rights council so that we can receive sanctions against the united states for its probation is in continual denial of basic human rights to the african-american community. right now are met our primary goal is to show to ensure that the appropriate charges move forward and so we are not satisfied yet 3rd degree murder is an appropriate charge it means it was an accidental killing it like manslaughter the the the partner charged they they levied if i get in my car again i get drunk i'm only intend to kill anybody but it's reckless behavior that could result in somebody's death that's manslaughter this 3rd degree murder but when i apply pressure for sustained period of time to a critical area of someone's throat. that's and it's all about foreseeability it's foreseeable that that kind of action will result in death or bodily injury so
8:23 pm
that's murder we're looking forward to speaking with the governor on behalf of the family and encouraging him to activate the attorney general keith ellis to come in take over this in this case bring the appropriate charges and make the requisite arrests. when the family is very concerned about the safety of the public these people are standing up not only for george they're standing up for themselves is standing up for the community but they're doing so by standing up against begin one of the most brutal police forces on the planet and i don't mean minnesota i mean the american police force in general they only know 2 things incarceration and brutality. and so they're concerned that when. interlopers come and break things and birth things that invites harm to other people's children they don't want to see that happen earlier we spoke to an activist from minneapolis who said the protest aims to speak out to washington d.c. as decision makers. i hope that we cannot get some justice i hope that we can talk
8:24 pm
to congress and i'm so glad that the melanin recessive people have come out to join us in this fight because i want to talk to the d.n.a. i want to go forward with people that are higher up and what i'm hoping for is for something to change in the police force something to change in this city and in this world because if we say that. you know now in in many people are not strategically. systematically held under the repeat line so i'm hoping that we can go to the people higher in our and make something out that's what i was. just a recap of what's going on right now multiple cities in different u.s. states are seeing violent protests over the death of george floyd in police custody over the last few days buildings have been set on fire and businesses looted with protestors denouncing racism and police brutality amid clashes with law enforcement . few.
8:25 pm
we've got people that we've got to call. george boyd was laying on the ground 0 the other officers watch. the governor of minnesota claims some of the violence is no longer about george floyd on this video you can see a man trying to burn the american flag in los angeles while in atlanta news outlet
8:26 pm
c n n's office was attacked by rioters you are not in the newsroom this is from your christer job some people are laughing some people are videotaping or something on fire chris a firecracker going to fire. you are right. a big crowd gathered outside the building to condemn the channels. coverage of the current events there was a high point presence in the area and he's got a mop and looks now at how the coverage compares with the protests in baltimore some years back. shocking footage has emerged of protesters breaking windows forging buildings and clashing with police thousands of taken to the streets to protest against the recent killing and george lloyd by police protests have spread far beyond minnesota all across the country clashes are taking place across american streets that i'd. like to thank god.
8:27 pm
thank you thank you. i think i minnesota's governor tim waltz has declared a state of emergency i am answering our local leaders request for minnesota national guard assistance to protect peaceful demonstrators neighbors and small businesses in minnesota. president trump has promised to seize control of minneapolis and says that there will be shooting if there is more looting the tweet was flagged and suppressed because twitter said it was more of find violence these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd and i won't let that happen just spoke to governor 2 mules and told him that the military's with. any difficulty and
8:28 pm
will assume control box when the looting stands the shooting starts thank you the u.s. attorney general has been deployed to investigate the actions of the officers who took lloyd's life i feel very very. badly it's a very shocking sight bill and i were talking about it before it's one of the reasons goes here right. because as you know we're very much involved and i've asked attorney general f.b.i. and the attorney general to take a very strong look and to see what went on liberal leaning american media as declare the killing of george floyd and the protests that erupted in its aftermath it into a long pattern of police brutality racism and the government ignoring the concerns of african-americans we do begin with breaking news we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and all around the world fires are still burning on the south side of minneapolis after protesters took to the streets to demand justice for
8:29 pm
george floyd how do you raise your children in this america i'm not sure there is an answer necessarily although. you point to angela davis who says it's not enough to be non racist you have to be anti racist however the same media seemed far less sympathetic in 2015 after baltimore lit up in response to the police killing of freddie gray. was. in 2015 concerns of the african-american community soon to be the last thing the american media was concerned about while artsy was covering the protests c.n.n. was covering a fancy dinner at the white house the streets of baltimore are filled with protesters everyone's wining and dining and this is happening 5060 miles away so you can't ignore that now. you can't ignore that.
8:30 pm
and yet it's important i do want to get to the red carpet da from us media finally got around covering the protests for trade simply violent crowd clashing with the police showing the protesters to be more less violent hoodlums a handful of protesters handful of criminals and thugs who who tore up the place isn't it the right word so calling them thugs just call them they just call them at least 15 police officers have been hurt 200 arrests 144 of the vehicle fires that these are statistics local place are put out 15 structure fires there's no excuse for that kind of violence right so what changed why is u.s. media suddenly concerned about african american is it perhaps that u.s. president donald trump is widely used to being racist those protests back in 2015 in baltimore did.
